Chronicle Sheets GM Busy At Work........

It was all so simple. Really.

It started with a man, one Silas Gribb offering jobs as a caravan guards with a rather attractive pouch of gold promised. The planned route had no bandits, dangerous creatures or even tolls so the job was an easy pick or was it?

Upon the caravan’s arrival in Belhaim, Gribb is arrested on a warrant for smuggling, and Belhaim’s sheriff and his most skilled deputies head out within the hour to escort him and his confiscated caravan south to Cassomir.

You?
All of you were deemed by the authorities of your ignorance about Silas’ criminal activities, but are left stranded in Belhaim, as Silas is obviously unable to pay up for the caravan job.

Talia Orem, the young proprietor of the Wise Piper Inn, takes pity on the PCs and offers free room and board for a few days—long enough for all of you to at least figure out what to do next.

Seated at a longtable, enjoying a free meal of fresh bread with cheese and
honey, washed down by watery mead.........your adventure has only just begun.

Adonnenniel's eyes still have not stopped shining from the moment she was hired onto the caravan. Before she was just traveling, but now she was adventuring. Even with the sudden end of the caravan job, her spirit had not dampened.

After all, she thought, here I am in this modest, perhaps even... and as she thought the word, a hint of a smile started to grow on her face ...seedy inn.

And then there was the group. She looked at them, all so peculiar. She had long since decided they were a bunch of ravenous murderers, looking for the first opportunity to kill. It was all so exciting.

She sat back, and enjoyed the moment. She had earned the right to relax and take in this adventure. After all, she had finally found who she had been looking for.

Stepping out of the inn, anyone can immediately notice a huge plume of dust rising to the northeast.
It isn’t long before someone bursts into the tavern out of breath, with the news—the Witch Tower has fallen!

This sets off the rest. This news sends everyone in the tavern heading out to gawk at the dust plume rising from the place where the tower once stood.

Leaving the rest of you speechless for now.

Sovereign Court

Chronicle Sheets GM Busy At Work........

Between Irathes and the barkeep, the following can be pieced together.

History of this place:

Seven years ago, the wizard-astronomer Balthus Hunclay left his native country of Rahadoum and traveled to Taldor. He soon purchased some land on a hilltop just outside the small town of Belhaim, adjacent to an ancient structure that locals call the Witch Tower. There he built a manor home crowned with an observatory. To ensure an unobstructed view of the night skies, he clear-cut every tree on his property, but found that Witch Tower remained an impediment to his stargazing. Belhaim’s previous baron had perished in an ill-considered attempt to explore the tower 2 years before Hunclay’s arrival, and his grieving widow, Baroness Origena Devy, refused the astronomer’s offers to buy (and then demolish) the tower.

Soon rumors begin as claims that dozens of dead kobolds were found in the ruins. Kobold sightings have been few and far between in the area around Belhaim hence the excitment.

At the site of the collapsed tower, two locals putter about aimlessly. One wanders about scratching her head, and the other stands with hands on his hips, chewing on a stalk of grass.

These two are Letha Mulle and Varyl Hodd, the least experienced of Sheriff Benhovy’s crew. Well meaning but not very bright or quick on their feet, they're obviously unsure of what's next.
With their boss out of town, they’re clearly out of their element.

Someone from the crowd suggests checking to see whether the wizard Hunclay knows anything about what happened, given that his manor shares the hill with the tower. The deputies argue for several minutes, over who’ll knock on the wizard’s door. If no one else steps up, undertaker Calladastina Honas grumbles in exasperation that she will.

All of this occurs in front of the party as you arrive

Perception DC 15:

Erynion is pretty sure that someone or something caused the foundations on this tower to become unstable resulting in its inevitable collaspe. The signs are there for one who knows exactly where to look as he deects the faint whiff of explosive powder, torches and tar. His observations tell him that the rocks below were broken by means of a series of explosion designed to weaken teh structure first but something went wrong and a charge with more force occured, triggering what should have being a slow crumble into a sudden demolishing.

Everyone else heads over to the Wizard's Home where a charred goblin lies on the doorstep, evidently triggering some sort of protective ward on the wizard's home and boiled it alive. The sweet smell of over cooked meat permeates the air and no one dares to go near it as they gather around and mumble.

Not a single one of them decisive.

Male Elf Archivist 1; HP 8/8; AC 16/12/14; F+0 R+4 W+1; Init +2; Per. +5

After examining the building, Erynion heads over to the wizard's residence to join the others.

I believe the destruction of the tower was a rather well-planned affair, rather than any sort of accident. If my nose does not betray me, in fact, it was brought down by a series of conflagrations by someone fairly knowledgeable, although they may have made some miscalculations while mixing their formulations, adding more accelerant which increased the yield of the mixture past what was strictly necessary to bring the building down. You see, I learned a small amount about alchemy, theoretically of course, from an Ifrit in Katapesh--Ady, I believe I wrote you about this--and we spent many a long night experimenting...

Erynion continues to prattle on long past the point that anyone is paying attention.

Male Half-Elf Witch-Gravewalker/1; HP 8/8; AC-12/12/10; F+2,R+2,W+3; INIT +2; Per. +1

Irathes, seeing the work of magic in the Goblin's corpse--another cause for celebration he must ignore--speaks the words for "Detect Magic" in Necril holding one hand over his eyes, the other out toward the manor. He does this for three rounds' worth, so he can determine exactly where the ward is/how far it goes, and what spell was used: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11. When the spell is complete, he'll remove his hand and will be able to see the aura(s).

M

Erynion's ears perk up at the sound of a new language.

That's a new one to me, dare I ask what you were speaking there? I'm fairly well traveled in area but I can't say I've heard it before.

Male Half-Elf Witch-Gravewalker/1; HP 8/8; AC-12/12/10; F+2,R+2,W+3; INIT +2; Per. +1

"The tongue is known as Necril, the language of the undead," Irathes explains, "it was taught to me by the spirits of a mortuary cyclone, which have since taken to reside in this," he holds abreast his spell poppet, a gruesome ashen doll made of human flesh and bone, stitched together with hair. At thirty-one years of age, his interest in the undead, and especially his relationship with these spirits have always caused aversion in those around him. His matter-of-fact tone, flat affect, and questioning stare make it painfully clear he's waiting for Erynion to back away, cup his mouth, and gag in disgust as everyone but those in Irathes' own coven had done before.

Male Elf Archivist 1; HP 8/8; AC 16/12/14; F+0 R+4 W+1; Init +2; Per. +5

Fascinating! You'll have to teach me some time. Have you met any other speakers?

He takes out a journal and starts scribbling down notes.

I can only imagine that would prove useful when delving into forbidden graves...

Male Half-Elf Witch-Gravewalker/1; HP 8/8; AC-12/12/10; F+2,R+2,W+3; INIT +2; Per. +1

Astonished at this very rare reaction to his interests, Irathes replaces his spell poppet into one of the many folds of his robes.

Once the shock wore off, Irathes answers Erynion, "I'd be happy to teach you. The only other speakers I know of are the few undead whom I've had the pleasure of knowing, and those in my coven whom I've taught, but I couldn't call them fluent by any means. As far as forbidden graves go, I couldn't say. All the crypts and tombs I've frequented were either unattended or open to the public. These are the ones most oft prayed upon by necromancers and..."

Irathes finds himself speaking excitedly about the few times his services have been required to quell or augment an undead presence in a small town from time to time. He feels a bit uneasy, excitement was usually an emotion only offered to him through the death of the living or of learning a new spell.

Female Elf Cleric of Findeladlara/1; HP 12/12; AC-17/12/15; F+2,R+2,W+5; INIT+2; Per. +5

Adonnenniel rolls her eyes at Erynion entering another of his fancies, when there is business to be done. She has perhaps not yet realized she may not receive a letter from him about his assessments of this topic. A letter which she already subconsciously plans to peruse at some future moment of leisure.

Slowly and deliberately Adonnenniel approaches the door, keeping her eyes open for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Avoiding any traps she finds, she takes a long look at the door,

I would like to take a 20 for a 25 if I could

before knocking and calling out:

"Oh Hunclay~! Are you in there~? The village would like to talk to you~!"

Sovereign Court

Chronicle Sheets GM Busy At Work........

Irathes is able to determine that there are at least 7 different spells guarding the door with several more spreading outwards.
The guard wards are spelled to burn, electricfy, freeze or channel vast raw magic into a creature to burn it out from the inside. The other wards seem to focus on scrying and alarm.

Adonnenniel on the other hand finds about 4 different traps which have not being triggered yet and wisely refrains from knocking and calls out instead, receiving no answer.

The town’s baroness, Lady Origena Devy, arrives soon thereafter with her son Arnholde to take charge of the situation. After listening to reports from those gathered at the site, she looks briefly at the obviously overmatched deputies and then scans the crowd, desperate for someone with sense to assist her. Her eyes fall upon all of for the first time, and hope lights up her eyes. Approaching all you, she spreads her hands out and begins to speak, pitching her plea to as befits one of her station.

“Today’s your lucky day. Mulle and Hodd here can’t handle this without the Sheriff to hold their hands, and I want to know what happened here. You seem to be a capable bunch. If you go in there and look through the rubble—find out what happened and why there are kobolds in my town—I’ll pay the lot of you 500 gold pieces. While you’re looking around in
the ruins, keep an eye out for any signs of our local eccentric, Hunclay. It seems somewhat suspicious to me that he’s not answering his door. Let me know what you find.”

Male Half-Elf Witch-Gravewalker/1; HP 8/8; AC-12/12/10; F+2,R+2,W+3; INIT +2; Per. +1

Irathes bows to Lady Devy, then turns to his companions, "This place is overrun with guarding and trap spells. Should we abandon this house of traps and wards for a more profitable endeavor? I know my vote is yea."

Female Elf Cleric of Findeladlara/1; HP 12/12; AC-17/12/15; F+2,R+2,W+5; INIT+2; Per. +5

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

She then responds to Irathes.

"Indeed. By searching the ruins of the tower, we may find further clues to this mystery. Perhaps Hunclay is lurking around there. We cannot be sure of his reason for wanting the tower to come down. Now that it has, he is surely moving on to the next part of his vile plan."

Sovereign Court

This goblin seems to be wearing the same clothes as the kobolds as far as Adonnenniel can tell. She can however see scales on this particular goblin...an unusual trait amongst goblins. She also notes the tht this goblin had claws..........

Lady Origena Devy seeing that you may not be interested brings out from among her gown.
"I can offer you an additional 250 gp first with a greater reward later on should you find out what happened though the fact that Hunclay that dammable wizard isn't here is suspicious."

I just think an open mind may do us some good on this expedition."
