Nobody will be too happy about being in a party with 19/18/18/17/16/16 guy unless he builds something very suboptimal. And even then, it's hard to think what he could do that wouldn't steal someone's thunder at least a little bit.
You can see how someone rolled a totally reasonable statline, 15/15/13/13/13/11 and immediately dropped out because of all the very high spreads in here.
You're basically filtering your applicants based on RNG.
Maybe it was a better idea to roll after selection as was initially proposed.

2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 3) + 7 = 15
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 1) + 7 = 13
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 4) + 7 = 17
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 3) + 7 = 16
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 6) + 7 = 16
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 4) + 7 = 12
Yes, that'll do just fine. Now to figure out what I want to do with those great rolls. I have some ideas just nothing fixed yet.
A question: Do you allow Combat Stamina and if you do, do Fighters get it for free?
Fei Wan |
Just to reiterate...
GM asked for no builds. Just character concepts.
Player 1 rolls: 15/15/13/13/13/11. He writes up a great character.
Player 2 rolls: 18/18/17/17/16/16. He writes up a less great character.
Player 1 is chosen. Player 2 isn’t chosen. No issue on party imbalance.
Or...
Player 1 doesn’t even put forward a character. He isn’t chosen. He doesn’t get to play.
Even worse...let’s say rolling doesn’t happen until characters are chosen. Player 1 has a concept that just doesn’t work with low rolls. Player 2’s character doesn’t make sense anymore as super-kitsune. Player 1 quits. Player 2 goes forward with a character that no longer makes sense.
—-
In other words. Just roll, and write up a character you want to play. Don’t worry about people who might not get in. Especially those who rolled stats but haven’t made a submission yet.
Lazyclownfish |
Another thing to add, and this is more a point against rolling as a part of recruitment in general, is that it's possible to manipulate the dice somewhat.
When I first dotted the thread, I previewed a stat roll to see how it would pan out and got something very high. I don't remember exactly, but it had a 19 and an 18. Then, when the GM opened recruitment, I previewed the same rolls and saw a very low spread with a single 15 and the rest lower. It wasn't something I intended, but since I lost my original stats by following instructions, I decided to wait and see if it would change again.
It did and I got the stats you see above.
Now I'm new here and I just discovered this today, but whose to say there aren't people who just wait to dot recruitments until they see stats they like?

Or just use the point buy the GM offered and decide if you want to roll after you're selected, like the GM indicated in the recruitment.
Edit: And for me, it's not about needing stats to get selected. I have a submission to one game with really poor stats that I still developed into an interesting and effective character. It's more about wanting to play the low stat character alongside giants, which is always a possibility since applicants don't really have any say in the selection. My point is that this rolling method is too random and swingy. A more stable method like a typical 4d6 would produce more balanced rolls overall.
And I feel bad for the players that are interested enough in the game to stop in and roll, but won't enjoy playing a gimp character. It should be more fair is all.

OP:
“21 point buy OR roll 2d6+7 once picked you must keep it.”
That’s all he said. Where does he say do 21 point buy and then roll after selection? You keep saying it but I don’t see it.
21 or roll, must keep. So I rolled.
If he said “21 point, and if picked roll 2d6+7 I would have done that.
Please show me where I am misreading this.

I love the idea of themed games. Applied for both the cove themed kingmaker and the all dwarves groups. I think I'd love to try out a kitsune bloodrager. The cha bonus means I'd get a little more out of it. It's suboptimal but if I get a 16 on a roll I think I can make a 14 she work. I'm on a phone so I'll roll and see if I can make it work when I get home.

So, several people have singled me out as an example... that’s fine, but I thought I’d clarify why I decided not to pitch anything. First and foremost, it wasn’t a very functional stat array for the character I wanted to apply with. I’m sure I could have thought up an interesting character with those stats (I’m really good at making up interesting characters), but my interest here wasn’t just in joining an all kitsune group, it was in playing a specific character in an all kitsune group and that didn’t seem feasible.
Truthfully though, game balance was/is a concern... I could make a decently effective character with those stats but they’re so far below the average rolls in the thread that unless the GM happened to pick the 6 weakest applicants my character would always be behind everyone else in most ways. If I was so inclined, I probably could have made a bard or a buff/support caster but even then his AC and HP would make him a liability compared to everyone else.

Mai always had an affinity for the cold. In the dead of winter she played in summer clothes, considered somewhat of a freak in her small Kitsune village. One day, at the young age of 9 she was visited by a whippoorwill which led her further into the northern wilderness away from her village-but for some reason, she was compelled to follow.
Further away, until she came to a hobbit-like home built into the side of an icy crag, where she was greeted by Eiko, a priestess of Pharasma.
Time seemed to cease to exist as Eiko enthralled Mai's attentoin to developing her innate abilities as a white-haired witch and training her as a war priestess of Pharasma. After what seemed like minutes to Mai, Eiko abruptly said, "You're 19 now, your training is complete"
Mai's jaw dropped. Thoughts of her family's worry and distress flooded her thoughts. She sprinted back, unerringly, the way she came to the remains of her former village. Scorched ruins crumbled from 10 years of negligence. There was no sign of life, or death or death for that matter. None until she walked into the village square where she saw him, or, more appropriately, it. The rotting form of her zombified father stood, chained to one of the statues in front of the temple. As she neared, the emaciated form started snapping violently in an effort to garner its first meal in a decade. Sobbing, she constricted her hair around the grotesque visage before her and ripped it apart.
Searching for a sign of anything left or responsible, she went to where her former home was and there was...a banner of a Skull-decorated fly, magically touched to remain the only perfectly preserved part of what was left of the village. The necromancers of Urgathoa made sure it would be known who came for her-the one who would be trained to oppose them.

With a 15/15/13/13/13/11, What I could think of...
Kitsune Inspired Blade Swashbuckler: Str (9) Dex (17) Con (13) Int (13) Wis (13) Cha (17)
Do this for 1 level for dex to damage. Then go Enlightened Paladin for 4 levels, with lvl4 giving you Cha18. This gives you +4 AC, +4 all saves, and 2 uses of personal challenge. Then go back to Swashbuckler.
Kitsune Lore Oracle with sidestep secret: Str (13) Dex (13) Con (15) Int (13) Wis (13) Cha (17)
For this Cha works for AC, Ref, CMD. A pure caster with decent HP and AC.
What I’m saying is...2 15s gives you decent options.

@Fei Wan- yes, as I said, there are several ways to make viable characters with those stats but a) none of them are the character I wanted to play, and b) all of them would be overshadowed mechanically by pretty much all of the other characters remember: they're not being compared to a standard 20pt buy party, they'd have to adventure with people whose stats are literally all higher than theirs... getting AC off that 17 Cha isn't going to seem all that great when the 20 Cha other caster is just using their 18 Dex without having to burn a revelation...

You could even start with a Str17 kitsune with those rolls...
Partly true, yes 19s become 18s before Race adjustment get added
So max is 20Also min is 8, thats for anyone who takes the 21 point buy.
min then is 6 [8 before race adjustment.]
When I said IF picked your keep what you have taken for stats.
I have GMed gams where players have after being picked with a point buy then asked to roll.
If you have rolled here you keep that roll,
If you take the point buy you keep that.
I like rolls for players who get good rolls, they get.a good feeling, for players you roll low, they have the challenge of making a PC I want in a group.
Thing is I will pick PCs who I think will work as a group. If you 1st time player with a low stat PC don't worry. You have the same Chance as others.
Use Fluff, build a fun and well made PC, who has drives needs and goals, flaws and traits that make them 3d. A 2D high stat DPR Marry Sue PC will not cut it sorry.
Weakness is where the dilemma and drama is.
HITPOINTS
Max 1st
Roll after that please.

My character concept so far:
Str 15 (17), Dex 17, Con 10, Int 20 (18), Wis 16, Cha 12
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!
1. Born during a bad winter, Akira is pure white. He was given the name Akira by his parents because he was born pure white and shone brilliantly in the snow.
2. Unlike his twin brother, Akira is insular and introverted for different reasons. His brother may have something to prove, but Akira doesn’t. He’s typically doted on by the other Kitsune for his brilliance.
3. He became interested in magic at the age of eight. Unable to cast magic intuitively, he was apprenticed to a kitsune wizard. He studied magic with gusto, showing his brilliance to his teacher.
4. Akira was popular, despite his insular and introverted nature, and this helped him come out of his shell. It takes a long time to win Akira’s trust, unlike his brother, who does not trust at all. However, he still overshadowed his sibling.
5. Upon graduating from his wizardly studies from Apprentice to Journeyman, gained a number of eight spells which he mastered. One of these was charm person. Which he used to gain the confidence of other kitsune. One of these happened to be the wizard’s daughter. After he gained Journeyman status (1st level) he traveled with his brother.
6. In human guise, he appears to be a Caucasian male with long white hair. He typically wears clothes in human guise and in kitsune form. He sheds his clothes when he takes fox form.
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
1. Akira seeks to become a powerful wizard in his own right. He also wants to gain the magical heritage of his own kind and has already grown his second magical tail while on his Journey with his brother.
2. He wishes to be reunited with his clan when he has proved himself to be a powerful wizard.
Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!
1. Akira has charmed a powerful noble’s son with his charm person spell and has begun to tear that family apart. What he does not know is that the charm person spell was incredibly effective (the Noble’s son rolled a 1 on his will save). That this youth has now fallen in love with Yuichi, his twin brother.
2. He had a night of intimacy with his teacher’s daughter, and invariably got her pregnant. Whether it is a son or daughter, he doesn’t know.
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
1. Yuichi, his twin brother, seems to have a chip on his shoulder for the way things were expected of him. Yuichi seems to be envious of his brother’s position and wants to attain the same personal glory. Akira isn’t seeking glory, he’s seeking magic. Akira was kind to his twin brother and follows him around, giving him magical support while he continued to study the occult and esoteric ways of magic. Akira could trust his twin with his life and the two escaped from some scrapes.
2. Akane, the kitsune that he got pregnant, is his one true love. After charming her with his charm person spell, one thing led to another and he had fallen in love with Akane. Akane may not be as smart, but she was certainly intelligent, witty, and clumsy. Akira left Akane his ring, as proof that he will come back to her after he attained the rank of Master. Now a Journeyman, he must gain power so he can come back as a powerful wizard.
3. Romeo, the youth he charmed, is his sworn rival. Romeo believes that Yuichi is Akira’s lover and has declared the wizard to be his enemy. Someday, Romeo will confront the wizard and fight for his love, Yuichi.
Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
1. Akira remembers the first day he mastered the charm person spell. He used it on a bully that was bullying his brother, Yuichi. The aspect was simple, the bully became Akira’s friend and he used gentle persuasion to get the bully to stop bullying Yuichi.
2. Akira besides his love, Akira desires power. He wants to be a powerful wizard so he could make his mother clan proud of him. He remembers wanting to be a powerful wizard so he could help his brother Yuichi.
3. Akira writes a journal of his and his twin’s exploits. He would love to have it published in Varisia someday.
4. Akira enjoys being nude in nature. His naturism tends to lead to clothes that are easily shuffled off.
I'll be doing my own character sheet in InDesign, so you'll see a .pdf submission from me.

Well, then I guess I recommend that if you preview your rolls and they are low, don't submit. Just wait a day and they'll change?
Like I said, there are flaws to rolling stats as part of recruitment. It's just exaggerated with an extreme method like in this game.
So get recruited and cheat then?
I’d recommend worrying more about fluff submissions that stats...
Lazyclownfish |
Who's to say people aren't actively doing that already?
I just think the system needs improving is all. I rolled low stats for the Orc game and made a pretty interesting character so I'm not a stranger to the concept.
I know when I recruit for my next campaign, I'm going to do things a lot differently.
And maybe some potential GM reads my argument and avoids allowing stat rolls in the recruitment thread. Maybe not.

I don't understand this, or I might not want to understand it the way I'm doing.

I think maybe my point is missed: I'm not worrying about fluff because all applications should worry about fluff. It seems to be a lingering idea right here that if you got low rolls then you have a special ability to do super uber backgrounds, and that if you got high rolls you suck at it. Well, the guy with two 18s could make a good background and be in.
So... even if I get in (and here is my biggest issue), I'll be sharing party with people whose lowest stat is probably equal to my highest, which probably means I'll be completely overshadowed unless I look for a very cpecific niche. Not to mention this:
Stats, I know some seem high [bit shocked but all the 6s and 5s but that is ok, I will adjust dangers to fit.
Bold mine. That means I'll be stuck with my rolls in a more dangerous place due to other people's rolls.
And it's not like just one guy rolled high, so chances of getting uber foxes are quite high.
Conclusion? I'm not against rolling (in pbp), I just usually suck at it. I tried my chances and failed, so be it.

Hi Lazyclownfish,
I can see your unhappy abut how the Paizo site works.I just wanted to say. And I will say this not just to you but all who are unhappy with how the Paizo site works.
Please reframe from posting complaints about the Paizo platform itself here.
This is just a game recruitment thread and nothing more.
There are other threads hosted by the Devs of the site that deal with such things.
If you wish to tell GMs how best to run there games, then there are threads for that as well.
You would be much better off posting there than here.
I think such threads are much better place to air any grievances and suggestions don't.
Thank you for your understanding.

I offered a point buy or roll.
Now 2d6+7 seems a way better deal so most went with it.The dice rolled and you got what you got.
But I can see the rolls are way higher than I expected. At this stage its not kind to change the rolls system I picked.
However I have had a think and I will allow players with Rolls they don't like to take the Point Buy, which I CAN Change cousing little trouble for players.
SO
==============================================
RULES CHANGE
I am changing the Point Buy from 21 Point scaled, any layer who rolled can take the Point buy of
22 Points buy [with a buy rate of 1:1] [Max 18 min 8 before race Adjustments]
This can be taken in place of your 1st and only stat Roll.
==========================================
That should even things out, not your STILL level 3 and you will need to ROLL HP for 2-3 levels.
Max at 1st. If you have rolled your HP keep it.
This can give a player 18/18/18/10/10/8 as a starting point, if your into Min/Max-ing and so after race Adjustments you can have 20/20/18/10/10/6 min/max.
Players are free to do this, but I want to know WHY! your PC is so ugly / weak / sick / dumb / slow / unwise etc. Back story is all.
Jereru |
That's nice, though I wasn't really asking for a special ruling. I just said I couldn't compete mechanically with such high rolls (which are not your fault, nor anyone's), and I was addressed with an idea of putting up a nice background. As if having good stats would free you from that.
There's always a way but, as Nate explained, I didn't want to play a buffer or a healer, that's why I backed out. Having a closer look, though, I felt maybe a summoner could make for it, though I still have to come up with a good background.

Updated Yuichi's background some for the shared background. Will keep the most up-to-date background on my profile page.
Background
-----------------------
Yuichi's birth was to be a bad omen, until his twin was born right after him. As a black furred kitsune, Yuichi was destined to bring bad luck and have no talent with magic, but his twin, Akira changed this somewhat, being born all white, the herald of good luck and great magical potential.
From early on, everyone's attention was focused on his brother, so while few bothered him about his fur color, few also bothered to take note of him at all. The other children would sometimes start to bully him, but Yuichi realized that if he just waited, they would stop, as if by magic. Ignored by everyone, Yuichi began to try several different things to gain some of the lime light that his magical twin was always in, but even when he began to master the talent of shapeshifting, the words of praise were few.
He largest encouragement actually came from his brother, however. Akira alone would listen to Yuichi's secret escapades out into the wild and applaud the small tricks he would pick up. So rather than hate him, Yuichi grew to admire his talented younger brother. Their bond became the only real connection Yuichi had to his clan.
His escapades into the forest continued as they grew until he found a nearby human settlement. Sneaking in with his shapechanging ability, Yuichi was shocked by the vast difference in culture. And after only a few trips, his curiosity led him right to the Brotherhood of Silence. There, he found the first real positive encouragement for his talents besides his twin. Elated and eager to improve, Yuichi began to learn the ways of the thief as he ran on missions throughout the town. His instructor, Fuller, also taught him the ways of the dagger, giving him a sense of power he had never felt before.
Despite his prolonged absences from the clan, only his brother would comment on it, in which case Yuichi would excitedly inform him of his missions. Of course, he never spoke of the Brotherhood of Silence, knowing that to do was would be to break the code.
After learning what he could from Fuller, Yuichi decided that it was time to leave the clan and see what else could be found out in the world at large. His brother suddenly decided to join him, though, causing a huge uproar in the clan when their prodigy up and left them. Akira had finally become a journeyman and began his true magic training, but he didn't even look back, though Yuichi was sure he wanted to. His brother simply said that they had to stick together to make it, and Yuichi left it at that.
After traveling to a few cities, Yuichi heard rumors of another clan of kitsune hidden in the hills not too far away. His brother pushed for them to visit, so they went and were surprised to find themselves welcomed in. While his brother was looked on favorably for his magical skills like he should be, Yuichi was surprised when they praised his roguish talents as well. After a while, Yuichi realized that it wasn't an act, but that they honestly thought that he was worth something.
The Fox Clan Village was isolated and without much trade. So they relied on a few swords-for-hire to help suppliment their living. Eager to help the first people of his own kind to accept him, Yuichi agreed to join the band and help out, his brother coming along for the ride as well.
Since then, it's been hectic as they fulfilled one job after the other, acting as human mercenaries. Yuichi's connections with the Brotherhood of Silence has allowed him to obtain them more profitable jobs, though it is sometimes a chore to explain how he kinds finding these. His brother, who is still chronicling their adventures, simply writes it off as 'Yuichi being Yuichi'.
-----------------------
Personality
-----------------------
Yuichi is the quiet loner type, partially from the little attention he received in his early years. However, once he gets to know someone, he opens up more, and he training with Fuller has taught him how to handle social situations on the job. Though Yuichi likes to think that he thinks highly of his skills, he actually has low self-esteem and reacts easily to positive reinforcement. He likes to tell about his accomplishments to those he's opened up to completely, like his brother. More of a logical thinker, he doesn't bring magic into the equation often, since he has so little experience with it.
-----------------------
Description
-----------------------
Yuichi's fur is completely black, an ill omen among some kitsune. His black cloak and clothing almost seems to blend with his fur at times. When in human form, Yuichi usually takes on the form of a young Varisian male with black hair and covered in tattos. When performing any secondary missions or thief like actions, he usually alters it to some other random person to keep his normal persona free of guilt.
-----------------------
10 Minute Background
-----------------------
1)Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!
Yuichi is a black-furred kitsune, born during a bad winter. Bad luck is believed to follow kitsune with black fur.
Yuichi is a twin, his sibling being a white furred kitsune. Powerful magic and luck is believed to be in a white furred kitsune.
Yuichi has no talent with magic, unlike most kitsune, perhaps a direct reflection of his fur color, though his sibling has easily mastered many spells. He can still shapeshift, and has focused on improving it.
Being overshadowed much of his life by his sibling, he is not very outgoing, and doesn't trust easily. He doesn't blame his sibling, though, and actually trust them more than anyone else.
Tired of being shunned, Yuichi left his clan to seek other places, his sibling following along with him. After hearing about the hidden kitsune clan through his connections, they settled down in the small clan and called it home after being accepted.
2) List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
Though he hasn't spoken it aloud, Yuichi wishes to prove himself to his parents one day and have them properly recognize him as their son as well. (Character's Desire)
Have a clan war begin between kitsune, or even with others, such as lycanthropes, etc. (Player's Desire)
3) List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!
During his few expeditions out training, Yuichi made more than one human noble angry with a few...misplaced objects. All for his training with the Brotherhood of Silence, of course.
In fact, the fact that he joined the Brotherhood of Silence is a secret he's kept even from his twin.
What he doesn't know, though, is that one of those nobles, Hearth Pelore, has already begun to act, and a bounty is already being prepared for his head.
4) Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
Akira - Twin - A white kitsune, great things were expected of him before he could even speak. And great expectations were met. Quickly learning to control magic, both innate and wizardry, he became the pride of his parents. While Yuichi never went for lack of anything, nor had any of the same expectations, most of the attention always stayed on his twin.
Despite always being the center of the clan's attention, he was still kind to Yuichi, and tried to help him when he could, including taking care of the occasional bully with his magic. He was also the only one Yuichi could show his tricks to, non-magical as they were. Though he thought it best if Yuichi didn't try his tricks out in the human city, he was willing to encourage him when he saw how happy he was. Through this, the two formed an unbreakable bond of trust between siblings.
After finally maturing and being ready to head out on his own, Yuichi was surprised when his twin announced that he would be coming along. When Yuichi learned of another clan's existence nearby, it was his twin that insisted they go, and Yuichi was glad they did.
While they may not always get along or agree on everything, such as walking nude through the woods, there is still no one Yuichi trusts more.
Kasaru - Father - Kasaru is Yuichi's father and the head of a high ranking family in the clan. While Kasaru always provided all of Yuichi's needs, there was still one thing he wanted from him: approval. While his twin was always praised for his magical talents, none of the tricks he learned would even get his attention. Not even when he learned to master his shapeshifting form.
Their relationship was one of almost obligation, but it took a quick turn downhill when he left, taking his twin with him. His father was furious that he would 'steal' away his pride from the clan. Yuichi hopes to mend this breach one day, and maybe - just maybe - finally get what he has been longing for.
Fuller - Trainer - A member of the Brotherhood of Silence, Yuichi is not sure if Fuller is his name or title. The human man constantly wore a black mask with his cloak during his training. Despite being young and inexperienced, Yuichi's shapeshifting skills were immediately desired, and Fuller was the one to begin his training as a thief. Fuller also gave Yuichi his missions during his time with the guild, instructing him in how each one needed to be done. The man is difficult to get along with sometimes, but trustworthy enough...well, as much as any thief can be, really.
Hearth Pelore - Nobleman - A rather wealthy nobleman, he was one of Yuichi's last targets during his time of learning the ropes of a thief. It was also the strangest of them all.
While Yuichi was scoping the place out, he happened upon the nobleman's son, Romeo, who just decided to invite him in for a meal without any strings. He seemed particularly interested in Akira for some reason. Unknown to Yuichi, Akira had used a charm spell on the boy, and its target had become Yuichi.
After finally distracting the over attentive boy, Yuichi managed to grab the item and dash out. Hearth, who was just returning home, managed to catch a glimpse of his face, his regular human face, just as he slipped away. Since then, Hearth has been readying a bounty, of the which, his own son has decided to be the first to try to claim it, both to find Yuichi, and to kill Akira, who he believes to be Yuichi's lover, instead.
5) Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
Yuichi still remembers the first time his outdoor expeditions to him to the human city nearby. Everything was huge and awe-inspiring compared to the clan. The sharpest part of the memory, though, was the awful stench of the place compared to the gentle frangrance of mother nature.
Yuichi remembers how happy he felt when the group from his new clan appreciated his skills, despite the fact that he had no magic. He finally felt like he had a place to belong to.
Yuichi has a habit of sharpening his knives with his fangs. Or is he sharpening his fangs with his knives? No one ever asks.
Love the Village pic.

I have a concept and a rules question. Concept only really works because of my absurd rolls but I might as well take advantage of them.
Base concept is a monk with 9 tails. There is a lot more to it than that, obviously, but that is the meat of my mechanical question.
The question is whether you would allow the Nine Tailed Scion trait to apply to monk feats (the ones that a monk chooses, NOT the automatic ones such as Stunning Fist) ?
I've been unable to find an official ruling but the original author of the trait says here that he intended it to work that way

I love rolling them bones
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 5) + 7 = 18
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (4, 5) + 7 = 16
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 3) + 7 = 12
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 5) + 7 = 13
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 3) + 7 = 15
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 6) + 7 = 19I've always wanted to do a kitsune dragon disciple, so I'll give that a go.
I was thinking of playing a young Barbarian Kitsune from a remote hunting clan on a mountain that keeps to themselves. Like our Amish, they send their young out for a rumspringa before they make their choice to become a permanent part of the community or whether they join the world at large. He stumbles on Fox Village and finds it very much like home, yet more modern and fun, and decides to stick around. At 6th move into dragon disciple. I need to come up with the 10 minute write-up (though it never, ever, takes only 10 minutes for me) but that is the foundation of the character.
HPs: 2d12 ⇒ (5, 7) = 12

Yes you can have that but as a feat not Drawback, its dose not seem to have a down side for a drawback. ALSO about tails.
Your only 3ed level, and Tails are got V feats with kitsune. The older and more skilled your PC the more tails. Its a matter of honor and also status.
I like your idea, but having 9 tails at level 3 will brake the game setting sorry.
Getting a magic tail and a new magic tail is a big deal, a thing that gets you honor.
SO to make clear, MAX TAILS is 1 per level [Max tales 9].
The most you can have is 3 tails at level 3
If you then want to take a monk with a +1 to the magic of the tales you have then I am fine with that.

It's a trait not a drawback... the way the Archives does the header for traits kind of makes it look like its listed under drawbacks, but it isn't. It's a race trait (only accessible to kitsune... or, I suppose, humans with the racial heritage feat...). You're the GM so if you want to change it from a trait to a feat that's your prerogative but I thought I would clarify what it normally is.

Sorry, but I don't quite understand your response.
I wasn't hoping to have 9 tails at level 3, I was going for a build where I'd have 9 tails quickly (L7). If you ok the monk thing then I'd have 4 extra tails (5 total) at level 3.
I think that you've just put in a house rule that the most extra tails one can have is level so that one cannot have 9 tails before level 8. You're the GM, you can make whatever house rules you want. But this is clearly a house rule as there are currently several clearly legal ways to get 8 extra tails before then (a ftr can get there at level 6)
I am not sure what I can have as a feat but not a drawback. I think that you're maybe saying that you're making Nine Tailed Scion a feat instead of a trait. If that is right, I'll drop this idea immediately. This build is already incredibly feat starved and I believe that trait is not remotely worth a feat.

If it is a Trait, then it can stay one and you can take it. I have no problem with that,
But I want to say why I am limiting tails. [at the start of the game]Yes I am sorry to say I'm its really just slowing down the tails got, as it brakes my game setting. So I have to put in place the house rule. Sorry but I feel I have to, or it undermines things I have planed. Really its just in your case slowing things down, for 2 levels until level nine.
At 3ed level three is still good with in the village. a 1/3 of the way to being an "Elder Fox" Some one with respect.
On that know I want to let you all know that we will be using the Honor system in the village.
For KITSUNE of the village Honor is a big deal.
Its about standing in the village community and resecting other KITSUNE of the village.
Placing the village community in danger will lose you honor
disrespecting a KITSUNE of greater village standing will lose you honor.
Two family lines may hate each other, seek even to kill each other, but they will do it in an honourable. Agreeing terms of vendetta. Be it with aassassin's or .a ritual combat once a year. etc.
Honor is all things.
Now for each tail you have you get 1 honor point. For each level you have you get 1 honor point. SO the MAX honor a player starts with is 6 honor.
But you want more.
Doing a request of the elders of the village is a way to get more honor, and also more tales.
Get why I am limitting tiles now. hehe
Here is the fun part, you can SPEND HONOR to save your life, O yes, that hard won honor can be used to pull you out of a pinch, save your your life. But once used that way, O the dis-honor, the shame, Yes you live but you have called on powers from beyond to save your poor soul, win that lover over to you, get that card hand that will make you rich. yes the ease by which you can lose honor. Some how the village always knows, fingers point and words said behind closed door.
But to do grate things, even terrabble things, as long as they are done with honor.
So more honor is gained.
The outside world has its way and the Fox Village its own.

Now I think this is REALLY interesting. I'm looking forward to the honor system. I'll adjust my character's background a bit.
Step 1:
1. Morgana Darkmoon's fur is the darkest color of black with tiny specks of shining silver hairs all over her body, giving her the appearance of being a night sky scattered with stars.
2. These markings are the same in both kitsune and fox forms, and in human form, she has freckles that cover the same places. Those familiar with astrology would recognize Desna's constellation across her chest, among many other across her body.
3. She's more interested with exploring her powers and abilities than she is professing any faith. Her oracle's abilities are a part of her regardless of faith, so she's taking it as her personal journey rather than at the behest of the goddess who marked her.
4. She's impulsive, and vain, and loves dressing with fine jewelry and clothing. She is not aware that some of her compulsions are related to her oracle curse.
5. Morgana is a name she adopted when she was a child. All she knows is that she's from the Darkmoon family of kitsune. There is evidence her parents were killed by some kind of magical disaster that left many kitsune dead.
Step 2:
1. Morgana Wants to become well respected and have a position of social power. Such as true nobility or an owner of a vast household or large swathe of land. (Countess, duchess, etc.)
2. I want Morgana to grow as a person, gain emotional maturity, and perhaps even gain a little bit of humility.
Step 3:
1. Morgana remembers what happened to her family, but has suppressed it so far deep in her mind, that she claims that she has no memory of what happened, and without serious psychological/magical aid, would not (and refuses to) rememer it. Her mother had become possessed by an Oni and became a Nogitsune, and her father died putting her down...
2. Mitsuo Silverfang (see below) actually knows everything that happened that night the Darkmoon family was nearly wiped out. As one of the responders to the calamity, he was the one who wounded the Nogitsune enough that her father could finish it. Morgana's father told Mitsuo what had happened with his dying breath, begging him to keep it a secret or else dishonor his family so badly they'd have been exiled.
Step 4:
Mitsuo Silverfang (Positive): An older Kitsune swashbuckler, the head of the Silverfang family and possessor of the silverfang, a magical rapier that is the namesake. He toook to watching over her after her parents 'died'. A person of some import, he hasn't had time or attention recently to monitor her actions.
Basri (Neutral): A younger male who believes that Morgana was up to no good, based off of the rivalry the families had.
Ulrathus (Negative): An oni spirit, one that's determined to ruin anyone bearing the Darkmoon family name. Morgana does not know of it's continued existence.
Step 5:
1. Morgana's general demeanor is that of a noble. She comports herself in the manner to which she desires to be. She hopes that she's practiced at acting like someone of power when she finally attains power.
2. Morgana does not enjoy hiding her Kitsune nature at all, and will go in her true form at all times unless it's expressly detrimental to do so. She does enjoy her fox form expressly for being cute and as an option to get enough to eat or a safe place to sleep.
3. She really loves shiny jewelry, especially anything made out of jade. She has memories of her mother wearing such bits and it makes her feel like she has a connection to her mother, whom she doesn't remember very well.

I like this honor system. Luckily (for) Fei, despite being a Rogue, will abide by the honor system. If for no other reason that one of his main goals is learning what being a kitsune means and belonging. Well...assuming he gets in.
Looks like this will be a unique campaign for the lucky ones who get in.
