1. Were you born in Korvosa, are you new to the city or are you simply a visitor there?

Rumal is from Cheliax, Brastlewark to be exact, and that is where the rest of his family lives. He came to Korvosa quite some time ago to strike out on his own with his brewery.

2. What traits have chosen and how do they tie into your backstory - I'd like more than a mechanic justification for your choices.

Brastlewark Businessman: He learned to brew amongst his family back in Brastlewark.

Accelerated Drinker: He has turned to alcohol since the loss of his son, and his wife leaving him. He drinks more than he brews anymore, but he still maintains his recipe (Formulae) book.

3. What will your character contribute to the party mechanically?

Rumal will provide the arcane aspect, fairly heavy on the AoE with the bombs. He also will be producing a fair amount of healing with his potion crafting, and infusions (when he gets a discovery).

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 4

Nyilas Banko, LN male human urban ranger. Still working on the profile, but here are a few answers about his background. It's a little rushe dbecause there are already so many submitions, but here it goes.

1. Were you born in Korvosa, are you new to the city or are you simply a visitor there?

Born and raised in Korsova, Nyilas was the only of five sons to reach adulthood; most of his siblings died of different diseases, malnutrition and a few "accidents" in the hands of their father. Nyilas father was a very severe man when it came to disciplining his children, which often meant beatings and harsh punishments. He worked in the city guard for many years, and when Nyilas was old enough, he too joined the guard, as it was the only career he knew anything about. By then, he was already scarred by his upbringing, growing into a cold, emotionally detached person. Yet, his father had succeeded in instilling in him a sense of discipline, which made him a perfect fit for law enforcement. A few years into working with the guard, Nyilas found out his father had been on Gaedren's payroll for many years, ane eventually found a way to bring him down. He didn't even know if it was payback for the way his father had treated him all those years or if it was just his job; anyway, the backlash was more than he expected. He and his father became the talk of the guard, and there were even those who doubted him - after all, an apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Besides that, the crimelord Gaedren was less than pleased with this boy meddling with his affairs. Soon, Nyilas found himself entangled in a web of lies which ended up framing him for murder. Though he waits for the judgement in freedom, he has been temporarily suspended from the guard and has no idea of how to get out of this situation. Meanwhile, his captain at the guard has been pulling some strings to bring him back to duty at least for now; he believes in Nyilas and doesn't want to lose one of his best archers.

2. What traits have chosen and how do they tie into your backstory - I'd like more than a mechanic justification for your choices.

Possibly Framed and reactionary or bullied. Not sure yet.

3. What will your character contribute to the party mechanically?
He can pose as skill monkey, though not a social one, and might even fill the role of a trapfinding rogue from 3rd level onwards, as he is an urban ranger. In combat, he is the typical martial ranged type, striking with bow, though in time he'll probably be able to do well in melee too.

1. Were you born in Korvosa, are you new to the city or are you simply a visitor there?

Raised here from a babe. Me an me brother were dropped at the Temple of Many as bubs and after the priests were done fightin' over who was gonna get the two prime Dwarf born warriors it was the Imodaen's who won cause they're the best fighters out of the various clergy. We were supposed to be raised as Templars and were trained as such. Were fine warriors but my brother is...ill suited to temple life. I loved it but...he's the only family I got and He can be a decent hero if you could just get him to stop with all this wizard nonsense.
I mean what kinda dwarf plays with bat sh!t and eyes of newts. Hit yer enemies till they stop moving and your done I say.

2. What traits have chosen and how do they tie into your backstory - I'd like more than a mechanic justification for your choices.

Glory of Old: Me and my brother got a strong resistance to arcane magic. That's how you know we must come from one of the older noble houses. Not many men or even dwarves can shrug off spells like us.

Threatening Defender: The best offense is a good defense. Any good dwarf'll tell ya that. Well not my brother. He likes to waggle his fingers an make ya go blind or something. But I say it's
not how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can GET hit and keep moving forward. I've been.learning to fight my whole life.

3. What will your character contribute to the party mechanically?
I can move pretty quietly as far as dwarves go. I know a fair bit about monsters and religion and the best ways to introduce witches and wizards to an early grave. My patron is the Lord o righteous vengeance and like him I'll go through hell itself to see a just score settled.
I'm hard to kill and can do a bit o divine magic as well. Woulda made a good priest if I hadn't of beat up the bishops son for calling me brother a godless whoreson. Only I can do that.

Here is my diviner wizard(without spell selection and gear yet).

Profile answers:

1. Were you born in Korvosa, are you new to the city or are you simply a visitor there?
Lagrin is relatively new to Korvosa, having spent about a year there. He has arrived as part of a two-man team, when Korvosan Guard attempted to employ divinations as a tool to combat the rise of crime in the city. His companion was an Oracle. They have developed a sort of rivalry between them, trying to prove whose approach to divinations worked best. Unfortunately, while seeking ways to best Lagrim, his friend secretly turned to the illegal substance named Shiver to expand his consciousness. When the truth came out, he was already beyond redemption. He was discharged from the Guard and the elves took him back for treatment. Lagrim was left alone, with the burden of responsibility now weighing double on him. He took it personally to track down the Shiver trade in the city and assist in stopping it as much as he can.
2. What traits have chosen and how do they tie into your backstory - I'd like more than a mechanic justification for your choices.
Campaign trait is Drug Addict (friend) - for the reasons explained in the previous paragraph. Other trait was Reactionary - as a frail magic-sensitive kid, this was Lagrin's way of dealing with his more militant fellows. He recognized prevention is the best cure, so that's why he further specialized into Foresight.
3. What will your character contribute to the party mechanically?
This is my first attempt at a full arcane caster, so I'm not promising to use him in the most effective way possible. But the general idea is to help the party with remote scouting and anticipating the threats (main focus), and also summoning and battlefield control, as every wizard does.

just sprucing up char sheet.

have a question.
At first level Angus has Craft Weapons and Craft Armor mod of +7.
He is a budding smith (wanting to hold to dwarven tradition)

Is it cool for him to have crafted his own mundane weapons/armor at crafting costs?
Specifically
Agile Breastplate (self craft) 200gp
Buckler (self craft)3gp
2x Cestus (self craft)5gp
Morningstar (self craft) 4gp
Dagger (self Craft) 1gp
Sap 1gp
Battleaxe (self craft)5gp
2x Javelins 2gp

If not I'll chuck him in cheaper armor...

This really is a tough choice everyone. There are incredibly creative apps here. As such, I am closing recruitment in 24 hours. You have until this time tomorrow morning (7:00 a.m. CST) to finalize and make your submissions.

@Angus - I'm fine with your using starting funds to craft equipment, but you'll also need to spend money on the tool kits for both skills.

BACKGROUND WITH ANSWERS
Carabas, named after a winter star, is the second son of a thieves' guild master. His father envisioned a long an prosperous life ahead of him as a brigand. However, his life didn't end up there as he was a devoted reader. Thus, Carabas is the embarrassing misfit of the family.

For the longest time, Carabas assumed he would spend his life under stories and education, supporting himself as a professional storyteller to those who were entertained by the art. This soon bored him and he realized he needed a more productive and adventurous life. He wanted to live like the people he read about. After some time, he found himself signing up as a Pathfinder and receiving basic training despite his old age.

His travels and his journal have led him to Korvosa, where he hopes to find an interesting story. If accepted, Carabas will take a skill front and ranged and magic support.

@GM Idyll: this is my freebooter/urban ranger that I wrote up for a CoT campaign. I'll be adjusting him down to first level and readjust his stats. With the urban ranger and freebooter you would be getting alot of static bonuses and excellent group syngery. I'll go into more detail in my follow up post once I readjust my background. Very excited to apply. And STRranger, good to see you applying for this group.

Dude, I freaking LOVE this char concept/build. It plays so well as a party buffer/primary melee and works with everything.

Hope you make it.

Thanks STRranger! I think with this group there's alot of potential for syngery. And that is really the strength that the freebooter/urban ranger brings. Hopefully we get to play together!

Graxlo Coldforge, brother of Angus at your service.

ah yes the questions.

1) Mine and my brothers are the same, raised in the temple, kicked out because I do silly things, now we're in the guard.

2) One trait is obvious, the one between Angus and I, the other is Valashmari veteran (or however you spell it) because I spent most of my time avoiding the temple by going into the wilderness.

3) Arcane/fighting. Not much for utility caster, but i'll be doing a lot of debuff and damage, very offensively based.

That reminds me, is it ok if instead of the 'shocking grasp' spell i had 'freezing grasp'? Exact same properties, just cold damage instead of electricity.

Liberty's Edge

Hi GM,

This is Lanfearon here. i own both Lorasaadi and Thordan here.

This is the character concept for Thordan the Bard Dawnflower Dervish

Do check out his stats. I will do the storyboard soon. In sumkmary this is a swashbuckler fighter with is more of a flanker to a main tank and has access to magic to assist the frontline etc.

The fact he is a mouse at the same time should allow some fun roleplaying too.

Feats
--------------------
Dervish Dance (PFCaS: ISWG 286)-When wielding a scimitar with one hand, you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on melee attack and damage rolls. You treat the scimitar as a one-handed piercing weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a duelist’s precise strike ability). The scimitar must be for a creature of your size. You cannot use this feat if you are carrying a weapon or shield in your off hand.
Weapon Finesse (PFCR 136)- With a light weapon, elven curve blade, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.
--------------------
Traits
--------------------
Anatomist- You know where to aim your blows to strike vital organs and you gain a +1 trait bonus on all rolls made to confirm critical hits.
Freedom Fighter(Andoran)- You gain +1 trait bonus on Stealth checks and a +1 trait bonus on attack rolls made during the surprise round.
--------------------
Racial Traits
--------------------
Tinker- Ratfolk gain a +2 racial bonus on Craft (alchemy), Perception, and Use Magic Device checks.
Rodent Empathy- Ratfolk gain a +4 racial bonus on Handle Animal checks made to influence rodents.
City Raised- Proficient with whips and Longswords, and recieve a +2 racial bonus on Knowledge(Local) checks
Cornered Fury- Ratfolk can fight viciously when cut off from friends and allies. Whenever a ratfolk with this racial trait is reduced to half or fewer of his hit points, and has no conscious ally within 30 feet, he gains a +2 racial bonus on melee attack rolls and to Armor Class. This racial trait replaces swarming.

Oh. Answers for Carabas

1. He's lived in Varisia all his life but it's safe to assume this is a visit to Korvosa.
2. Maestro of the Society, cause he's a Pathfinder, and Vagabond Child because he grew up beside thieves.
3. skill monkey and magic support

It's all in the background I typed in.

@ Karissa: In case you didn't know, Chelish, Taldane, Andoran, and Common are pretty much the same language. It's like English, where you have American, British, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, ANZAC, and a whole mess of other dialects. Might want to switch that one out for something else, especially since Korvosa is likely to speak the Celish dialect anyway.

(Sorry for Backseat GMing, just trying to help, I'll be shutting up now.)

The Exchange

A lot of interesting potential team combinations here. It'd be funny to see a team all taken from the same section (ie all martial, all skilled, all divine, all arcane).

For that matter, it would be even funnier to see a whole team play the same class.
Actually that inspires me. I wonder where I could find a GM to run that...

GM Idyll:

I've made an alternative build for Nyilas as a fighter (archer) instead of urban ranger. I'm fine with playing either class, depending on what you prefer. Background remains the same as in questionnaire's answers.

Can't wait to see the final team....

All right, in the interest of my sanity, I am closing down the application process sooner than originally published.

I apologize to those who were unable to get something in before the deadline. There are some amazing entries here, so I'm going to spend some time pouring through them before I announce the team.

As I always say (and usually mean), if you aren't selected, don't take it as a strike against your creativity or character. There were some amazing overlaps in each of the categories and I could easily make two or four stellar parties from these submissions. Were it not for my busyness and previous burnout, I would have done so. But alas, one party is all I'll do.

Stay tuned for the announcement!

On the edge of my seat waiting for your decision GM Idyll!
I don't know how this campaign develops, but based on the Player's Guide it has one of the most evocative beginnings, with a strong noir feel. This is my 3rd attempt to get into this AP, and every time the cast of characters (and the players behind them!) was simply exceptional.

But I'm amazed that nobody has come up with an urban druid this time around

Ok, I've made my choice. Once again, thanks to all who applied.

The Korvosan Recruits
Garridan Krale - Martial
Gerald - Arcane
Andre Cyre - Skill
Allysen - Divine

Cheers everyone and happy gaming!

Well, at least that was quick :) Congrats to all selected!

Indeed, congrats. I guess Kazzuk is off to shoot some peasants--er, uh, pheasants, that is.
