Heroes of Korvosa - Edge of Anarchy

Game Master Balabar

I am running Edge of Anarchy, the first chapter of the Curse of the Crimson Throne adventure path using the Pathfinder core rules.

1 to 50 of 103 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

Gaedren Lamm must pay for his crimes!

For too long this petty crime-lord has stained the streets of Korvosa. Thievery, drug-dealing, blackmail, kidnapping, murder—his list of crimes is long. The number of people he has victimized is too numerous to calculate and even includes you. He has always been one step ahead of the law and your vengeance. Until now…

I will be running Edge of Anarchy, the first chapter of the Curse of the Crimson Throne adventure path. I am looking for five players who want to take part in a fast-paced, role-play-heavy, investigative swashbuckling adventure in a gritty urban setting. Characters should have backgrounds that connect them to the city of Korvosa and make them want to protect it from the malign forces that threaten it.

Post a short (about three paragraph) summary of your character’s background. You don’t need to post a complete character sheet—race, class, abilities, feats, and traits should be enough for now. I will select five characters from the submissions by November 25.

Character Creation

Rules Pathfinder core: Start at 1st level, 20-point buy for abilities, average starting wealth for class, maximum hp at 1st level, no evil characters.

Classes Core only, archetypes OK.

Races Core plus tieflings. Humans, half-elves, half-orcs, and tieflings should specify their ethnicity. Chelaxians should specify if they are members of the nobility. Varisians should mention if they are Sczarni. Shoanti should specify their Quah.

Traits Two traits, one from The Curse of the Crimson Throne Player’s Guide (Pathfinder conversions here) and one from any other Paizo source.

Background READ the player’s guide! Create a background that not only incorporates a reason to go after Gaedren Lamm but also ties your character to Korvosa. Feel free to invent friends, family, and foes—incorporating connections to other characters is encouraged. If you have access to the Guide to Korvosa, you can use information from it to create your background as well. Just stay out of Chapter 5.

Oh man. This would be perfect for my Korvosan playboy bard, if he wasn't in a game already. As it is, I'm half-tempted to submit him anyway...

Sczarni

Do you have plans to continue this after the first book?

Jing the Bandit wrote:

I certainly could. If we get to the end of the first adventure and everyone's still interested, I would definitely consider it.

Screw it. Is there any kind of etiquette regarding playing the same character in more than one game? >:D

Sczarni

I sent you a PM regarding a question of mine, I didn't wanna fill the sign up area with it

Sczarni

If it affects your thought process, I too was also coming up with a bard ^^

Maybe so. But my bard's better. :P

Sczarni

Eh, I'm just attempting a social buff bard, so probably. I'm gonna be as far back in combat as I can be ^^

Shadow Lodge

The man sinks to his knees on the wet cobblestones, his breath catching in sobs. Blood runs through the stones mixing with the muddy rain water diluting it to an unnatural grey. The man grabs at the woman not believing this has happened. "Sanah," he chokes out. The keening wail of sorrow seems to come from everywhere and nowhere all at once, however it is this man that screams the emanate. He pulls the woman from the ground clutching her to his chest, tears streaming down his face until one can't tell the difference between precipitation and lamentation. He looks down at her hands and realizes that the finger and the ring he promised to her is gone. It was all his body could take; the man fainted, his head hitting the cobblestone road with a hollow sound.

Tolen Meagle always wanted to be part of the Korvosan Guard. His father was a guard, and his father before him. Tolen trained hard and on his eighteenth birthday was sworn in as part of the Korvosan Guard. As part of his duties, he was required to attend the Church of Abadar. There he met a beautiful raven-haired Chelaxian woman, who was sent to the Church by her family to study in the ways of an engineer. Tolen's father warned him about keeping company with an upper-class woman, but Tolen was smitten. After a few months Tolen sought the hand of the woman. Tolen gave a ring which he presented as a promise to this woman. He started saving to take a trip to Egorian in order to ask her father for her hand in marriage.

Three days before the trip was to commence, while out on patrol, Tolen was called upon. Someone had found a body in an alley. Trotting toward the call, he noticed it was near the park which he and his soon-to-be fiancee liked to stroll. A man waved and pointed down the alley. Tolen jogged over, then stopped dumbfounded. That hair looks just color and style his woman had. Those clothes, it was his woman's favorite skirt and blouse. That face... “NO!” Tolen screams.

After he comes to, he's taken away by the other guards. He's given time to bereave his lover. He talked with his friends about her murder trying to piece together what he could. There were no leads. Her death, it seemed, was just one of the many that became unsolvable. To Tolen, it would never be unsolvable. He became obsessed with finding her murderer. Unshaven and unkempt, he stalked the alleys at all times of the night. He was haunted by his fiancee's death. Finally one night as he walked past a pawn store, a gleam caught his eye. The ring! Tolen waited on the doorstep, unsleeping, praying to Abadar for strength. Finally the store owner opened for business. The owner was unwilling to budge from his price, given the look of the ragged man. Even with a plausible sounding story—and true in Tolen's case—the proprietor did not want to give the ring away. Tolen cried again for his loss as his savings were spent. The man took pity on Tolen, and offered a name—Gaedren Lamm.

Tolen had hope at last, which was soon dashed. His friends in the Korvosan Guard turned their back on him, even his father shunned him. Nowhere else to turn, Tolen stalks the alley and streets at night hunting for the Lamm.

How is this for an intro? I was planing on making him a human fighter/cleric. Typical sword/board fighter, with a light xbow back up. He would worship Abadar of course. Thinking Earth and Travel domains. Str 16, Dex 10, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 16, Cha 13. Weapon Focus: Longsword, Shield Focus, Toughness. Indomitable Faith and Lost Love (widowed). I also have a couple of IRL friends that will be submitting chars for this.

Liberty's Edge

dotting. Friend of RashidAli, hopefully we can get picked together?

Definitely interested. I have always wanted to play this AP. Here is my character submission. Afraid I went with the same campaign trait as Rashid, but if we both somehow make it, it could be a great opportunity for role play as we encounter one another in our individual quests for vengeance.

Appearance, background and stats are all to be found in the character profile. Jakthion has been training to become a griffon rider. He will be selecting crossbow style at level 2.

Sczarni

Alonzo was an only child born of noble chelaxian family, but it became apparent as he grew up his mother had not been the most faithful of partners. The allure of the demons had been to much to her and thus Alonzo was born. When signs of his "abnormality" began to form, his father hid him away from the public and wiped his name clean from the family line. His mother was killed to avoid any scandals that could come from trying to hide their child and her dalliances. Only a single servant knew his actual connection to the family and cared for him.

It was upon his 60th birthday, though it may as well have been his 15th by the look of him, that the faithful day came that his father had been murdered. While he and his father wasn't the closest of family members, he still took the death hard. Their servant followed one last act of servitude and took him out to verify that the man that was murdered was indeed his father. His noble line was extinguished with the death of his father and he was kicked to the streets.

It was after a few weeks on the streets that a priest of Shelyn noticed him, his beauty that could be brought forth. She offered him only a place to board at the temple but because of his age could offer no more. It was there that his love of the arts began, delving into the depths of storytelling and acting and thus how he found his feet to stand on. He kept himself fed and even began to give back to the church as best he could but a few years went by and with his feet firmly planted on the ground it was time for him to begin to look for his father's killer. And thus the Wolf of Korvosa's story truly began.

I hope that was a decent enough backstory.
as for the rest of it all.
Rakshasa Born Tiefling, Male, Bard

Alternate Racial Trait (If allowed): Prehensile Tail, and Fiendish Sprinter.

Grand Lodge

And this is for people to look at his skills and such. More details to be added should he be accepted

And here he is!

Liberty's Edge

Here is my submission, I will make his profile complete and purty if chosen.

Eran was born and raised in Korvosa, a large city in Varisia along the border of Cheliax. He was born to the seventh son of a wizard, who was also the seventh son of a wizard. All of his ancestors studied magic at the Acadamae, but when he was born it was obvious that Eran would not need to study. He was born with the raw power of eldritch magic running in his veins. He was born a sorcerer.
Sorcerers are rather frowned upon in Korvosa, because the Acadamae insists that magic without training an discipline is dangerous, and can only end in disaster. Eran was even more outcast, because of his magical tattoos, inlcuding his familiar, Hornsby; an owl tattoo that could transfrom between feather and ink. Eran and another sorcerer friend of his, Alika (who later became his wife) set out to dispel (no pun intended) this myth.

The Acadamae is, of course, rather stubborn in their beliefs, and Alika and Eran's efforts seemed meager. They were never granted an audience with the Acadamae to show their skills, and when they used their power for good, they were reprimanded. And so it was that when his wife, Alika, was accused of murder, Eran believed the Acadame to be the ones to blame.

A fisherman was the only "eyewitness" to the murder, and this seemed to seal the case. However, Alika's alibi was solid, and the witness wasn't enough to seal his beloved's fate. Eran confronted the fisherman, and with his silver tongue was able to get the truth from the man: he was intimidated into providing false witness and forced to plant the murder weapon. Eran was told that the fisherman was coerced by a local crimelord by the name of Gaedren Lamm.

Before the fisherman could recant his testimony, Lamm had the poor man killed. Although this resulted in Alika being set free, the stigma of the ordeal was too much to overcome. Eran wasn't satisfied. Despite Alika's protests, Eran set out in the dead of night to find evidence to incriminate Gaedren Lamm, and make him suffer for what he had done to his family.

Eran's body has tattoos all over it. Winged creatures, arcane and mystical symbols, trees and intricate knotted lines for beautiful artwork across his arms, back, and chest. On his chest, is a tattoo of an owl, which also happens to be his familiar, Hornsby.

Eran, while usually preferring to go without his shirt to allow Hornsby free reign, wears the colorful clothing of his people. He wears scholar's clothing made of orange and turquois cloth, and a matching scarf. His purple eyes would contrast with his dark brown hair, but he usually prefers a shaved head.

Here is my submission ....

Fane the Scarred

At an early age, Fane was forced to deal with the harsh realities of life in a big city alone. Born to Varisian parents that settled in Korvosa, his early childhood was one of happiness until that fated day.

When Fane was around 9 years old, Hellknights came in the night and took his parents away. He was told they were caught freeing slaves and he was placed in an orphanage. This taught young Fane a very valuable lesson and one he lives by today, laws are corrupt and only people matter. However it was a lesson he would forget for a while …

Life in the orphanage was a change from his free spirited life style of before. Within the year he had run away and began his life on the streets. It didn't take long before he was cold, hungry, and alone. Help came in the form of what seemed to be a kindly old man that offered to take him in and feed him. There were lot of kids he helped and at first asked for nothing in return. But soon his hospitality dried up. He said it was time young Fain earned his keep.

For years Fain learned the ways of underworld. How to scam, cheat, and steal. He wasn't just good at it, he enjoyed it. The thrill of getting over on the upper class and taking back what he felt they stole from him. Everything was going good until he was given orders to go help extort money from local shop owners in a run down part of town for “protection”. He refused and was taught another costly lesson, never cross Gaedren Lamm.

Gaedren tortured Fain and left him for dead on a garbage heap. His face is now scarred and hideous to look at and another life lesson was learned. Choose your friends wisely. After a year of recuperating and planing, Fain is ready to track Lamm down and put a stop to him.

YES! I really want to play this!

Now, to build my submission... I'm thinking a wizard, specializing in enchantments.

Dotting. Will try to submit character later today.

Here is Cardon Quid, former Lamm, now cleric of Sivanah and Acadamae graduate (on the road to mystic theurge). He was made for an earlier Crimson Throne game that went nowhere, and his background and description can be found in his profile, though I'll repeat them here.

Background:

Cardon Quid is the unwanted child of his elven mother Isarlia (a hopeless junkie) and some random human drug pusher who traded her favours for a fix (not the first or only time that happened). He bounced around for many years from orphanage to orphanage until he finally got himself mixed up in Gaedren Lamm's clutches. Not particularly skilled at pocket-picking or lock-opening, Cardon served as the voice man on a job; if things went badly, he talked them out of it.
Cardon has a gift for the gab, which has gotten him into and out of trouble more times than he can count. Ever since he can remember, a few sly words and a wink and a smile were all it took to convince everyone he was an innocent little darling, just a little 'lost'.
Until the day he and his crew were sent to raid a home rented to some outlanders. What at first seemed to be a normal, humble dwelling, was soon revealed as an underground temple and gathering place for the faithful of Sivanah, who were not swayed (though impressed) by Cardon's verbal illusions. After learning a quick lesson in manners from the Sivanah flock, Cardon and his crew were set free with empty pockets and sore bottoms. It took Cardon a full seven days to work up the courage to return to that home, this time as an inquiring visitor rather than a would-be burglar.
The clerics of Sivanah had been waiting for him, as they immediately knew a kindred spirit when they saw one. Gaedren was not impressed with his new loyalty, and beat him mercilessly day after day, trying to learn of these clerics and to break his resolve to return to them. He failed, and one day, with some help from a friend, he managed an escape and fled to the Sivanah house. They hid him and instructed him in the ways of their goddess.
When Cardon was 13, he began to manifest other powers, arcane powers not given him by Sivanah. At first, the clerics didn't know what to do with this development, until they saw an opportunity to spread their influence into one of Korvosa's mightiest establishments: the Acadamae. They pulled some strings and obfuscated others, until Cardon Quid was the Acadamae's newest student. There, Cardon studied hard and learned the powers of conjuration. It was a trying ordeal, but Cardon graduated with distinction.
Cardon suffers from divided loyalties. While he shares none with his former tormentor, he does care about the other Lamms he left behind. He has an extreme devotion to Sivanah and the clerics who rescued him, and he also feels strongly for the Acadamae and the people there who taught him so much. So far, his loyalties have never conflicted, but he knows the day may come when his benefactors at the Sivanah house require something of him that may bring harm to the Acadamae - a day he fiercely dreads coming, as he has no idea what he will do.

When I used him last, the GM and I agreed that since he had graduated from the Academy, he knew how to cast first level wizard spells and cantrips, but until he gained level two, he would never use them (had already cast them earlier that day, Sivanah was blocking them until he learned to depend on her, whatever reason you like), except in circumstances of pure fluff. This may or may not be agreeable to you.

Incidentally, what experience track will we be using?

And with regards to wizard familiars, are we restricted to those in the core rulebook or can we use other sourcebooks as well?

The explanation of his background is fine, but he won't qualify for the Acadamae Graduate feat unless he is a specialist wizard at 1st level.

Dragoncat wrote:

The fast track. It works best for online campaigns.

Quote:

You can use other Paizo sourcebooks. Keep it reasonable.

Okay. Thank you!

Also, will you allow characters to start with property (studios, apartment suites, and the like) from the Guide to Korvosa?

Weird how I missed that. I made this character two years ago, so I don't remember, but the GM must have hand-waved something. I'll pick Selective Channeling instead, although if it looks like we'll have a lot of party members built to use Bluff or Intimidate on a regular basis, there's that nice Shared Manipulation feat for half-elves I'd consider.

Here is a character I made for this AP but who does not appear lucky in regard to being picked. His background is in the profile.

How many posts per day do you expect. I can reliably post at least once daily. Are you looking for more than that? Tries haard not to think of rumblings about inheriting workload from departing co-workers

Dragoncat wrote:

Sure. Whatever you can afford.

If you can't afford property, your character can always be living with family who owns a residence.

Alright, then. Thanks for clearing that up.

Now... to get cracking on that backstory!

Alessio Cooper wrote:

A very nice background. However, please note that the campaign is limited to the core classes. Changing his class to wizard from witch should be reasonably straightforward.

One per day should be enough. I will do my best to keep the game moving. You can post more often if you like.

I haven't run any games on the Paizo boards before, but I've run many campaigns on the Wizards messageboards. I've found that once a day posting is a happy middle ground for most participants.

Dragoncat here, finally handing in my submission!

Allow me to introduce Tassira Vantyev, an enchantress skilled in diplomacy and investigation.

Her background is in her profile, and her character sheet is here.

With regards to posting, I lurk on the forums fairly often. I can probably match the pace of other posters, but I usually stick with 3-4 posts a day if nothing else comes up.

Also, for the convenience of the GM, allow me to organize the applicants:

If there's still a chance to join in, I'd like to toss my hat in the ring with a monk. I'll start working on it tonight and have it ready... by tomorrow morning, I should hope.

I'm also interested in joining and making a character currently. It's hard to get into a game, lol, so many people keen to play :P

Basic background for my character is she's a half-orc paladin with the unhappy childhood trait.
She discovers the church and begins attending only to be almost beaten to death by Gaedren when he finds out. Realizing her faith made her stronger in her most desperate moment of need, but not being satisfied with the life of a cleric, she becomes a paladin.

Having been outcast most her life, serving Gaedren as a cutpurse, and occasionally more violent work, she finds her place serving her god/goddess and resolves to purge Korvosa of the taint that has befallen it because of Gaedren Lamm.

I am looking into potential deities now.

Well, it IS a popular adventure path...

There is still a chance. I originally said that I would choose people by Nov 25th, but I might move the decision up if there continues to be this good of a response. I'll give at least a day's notice before shutting recruitment.

Abadar, Asmodeus, Pharasma, Sarenrae, and Shelyn have temples of their own in Korvosa. Most of the other major gods are worshiped in the Pantheon of the Many.

I will be fleshing out the character and writing a proper backstory shortly.

Hadric Thorvaldson was an Ulfen bandit [read: barbarian] of mild infamy in northern Varisia, but eventually fell in love with a Korvosan woman, got married, and moved to Korvosa. He renounced his former ways and began serving as an auxilliary in the Korvosan Guard.

His job meant he was often away from his wife's shop, however; one day, he returned to find her shivering uncontrollably. The Korvosan Guard all but ignored the case, which they thought was just one more drug abuser. Through his contacts in the city, Hadric managed to save his wife's life, but she remains catatonic, unable to talk or move.

Hadric has since then resigned from the unsympathetic Guard, devoting his time between searching for the one who had destroyed his life at home -- one Gaedren Lamm -- and working at shadier and shadier venues as hired muscle in order to keep his wife and her ailing father safe.

To make matters worse, Hadric found out that restorative magicks of the priests in Korvosa could bring his wife back; however, his worship of his ancestor- and totem-spirits mark him as an apostate, and no clergy is willing to bring back his wife... except at a cost. One church has told him they would perform the service for no less than 2,000 gold pieces. [The church should be one of relevance to the other PCs, or if none, Abadar (because money).]

Ianthé Jack. Half-Elf. Varisian. Sorcerer(Destined).
Traits: Missing Sibling, Fast-Talker
Feat: Harrowed.

There had been many names that they knew themselves to be called. "Wanderer", "Thief", "Scoundrel", "Good-for-Nothing". They were used to it. Often accepted it, as a matter of course. One thing that could not be said was that they were disloyal. Woe betide anyone who made an enemy of the caravan, because word could spread fast and linger long. Family was important.

This one had gone missing seasons ago, her cousin. Just young enough to get himself into trouble, and not old enough to have learned better. The Family searched for him but found nothing, and when the time to leave arrived, they went reluctantly. Unable to leave without him, and knowing that she would want someone to do the same if she were in his position, she stayed. A few stayed with her, but over time, they followed the caravan as well.

So she made her living while she searched, earning all the names that she had heard spoken about her kind. It was not too hard a thing to do, after all-- It was how she had been taught. There was one name she did earn, that made her smile: "Lucky". Gambling tables groaned when she sauntered into the room, but they could not keep her out. In the time she had spent in the city, she had found something, but not enough to find her cousin. Quietly, in the evenings before bed, on those mornings when she sees the dawn over Korvosa's streets, she prays to The Lady in the Room that her latest name would ring true.

What's worse is it seems that the rate of spousal attrition amongst martial classes verges on 100%. We are indeed a tragic lot.

Now all we need is a paladin & a monk who lost a spouse and every martial class will be fairly represented!

Please consider my late request, I humbly submit Carp.

Caranthir "Carp" Ancailimon has traveled many leagues to demand vengeance on behalf of Calistria! The violent and insolent Gaedren Lamm and his troup of miscreants have assaulted and maimed a high priest of Calistria. Carp cannot let this pass as this priest was the one who brought him into Calistria's embrace.

"Death to Gaedren Lamm! My mistress shall have her vengeance!"

I'd like to try and join as well. My contribution will be Allyph Yssal: a half-elf sorceress (later also rogue) who lost her mother and uncle because of Gaedren Lamm. (Thus orphaned.)

Biography:
Background
Born in a small town not too far from Korsova, Allyph was the daughter of a human named Aldyth and a elf whose name she was never told. It was because of not knowing her father that she inherited her mother's family name, Yssal. Unknown to the townsfolk Aldyth came from a family of witches, and had wanted to teach her daughter witchcraft when old enough.

It however happened that Allyph, six years old at the time, unexpectedly electrocuted a bird she enthusiastically pointed at. This happened in broad daylight with many onlookers and caused Allyph, already shunned for being a half-breed, to be declared dangerous by the townsfolk. Aldyth fled town with her daughter, who she now realized was a sorceress. They fled to Korsova, where Aldyth's brother Thomar lived. When they arrived in Korsova he took them in, and it was in Korsova that Allyph grew up to become a woman.

Allyph and her mother had been living safely with Thomar for many years. Until one morning, when Allyph was out to buy food, a man came to their house and demanded money. It turned out Thomar had a debt to a man named Gaedren Lamm. Unable to pay it, Thomar attempted to scare the debt collector into leaving. Enraged, the debt collector pulled a knife and stabbed Thomar in the stomach. In an attempt to save her brother, Aldyth tried stabilizing him with a spell. The debt collector thought Aldyth was about to attack him, and sliced her throat. When Allyph came home she found her mother and uncle dead. Next to her uncle's body was a name he'd written on the floor with his own blood: Gaedren Lamm.

Allyph wished revenge for her mother and uncle their deaths. She went to find the man named Gaedren Lamm and found out about the debt her uncle owed him. Gaedren decided Allyph had to pay of the debt, but she refused and attempted to kill him. Gaedren struck her down and as she realized she'd be no match for Gaedren and his men the way she was then, she decided to flee. Ever since she's on the run for them, continuously hiding in one of the many vacant houses in Korsova as she grew up. But Allyph's determined to one day return and make Gaedren pay for the deaths of her loved ones.

Personality
Valuing individuality and freedom, Allyph prefers to pursue her personal ideals. She dislikes situations in which other people tell her what to do. This causes other people to sometimes think of her as stubborn. Despite having a history of being shunned for being a half-bred, she's a proud young woman who strives to be true to her ideals. Allyph however values her appearance just as much as her ideals. This causes her to either be very touchy or easily flattered when commented on her appearance.

Yet there is one thing that hurts Allyph's pride a lot: she's a kleptomaniac. Allyph tries to hold back the urge to steal, but regularly succumbs to these urges. As she isn't an evil person, kleptomania being a disorder, Allyph feels guilty every time she steals an object. She sometimes tries to return the stolen objects, but is usually too ashamed to do so. So far she's been able to avoid any contact with authorities, but she knows her luck may run dry one day.

Though not bound to any deity or religion, Allyph respects the forces of nature and believes a soul to be present in any organism; be it a plant or a human. As such she shows reverence for the organisms that lose their life so that she herself may live. When other people do not, she tends to get upset.

Appearance
Being a half-elf, Allyph inherited traits of both human and elven lineage. She is 5'7" (170 cm) tall. This makes her taller than the average female human, but not as tall as the average female elf. Allyph weights 130 lbs (59 kg), and has inherited the lean build and comely features of her elven lineage. However her skin color is dictated by her human lineage, and of a rather pale complexion.

Allyph's ears are slightly pointed, but not as pointed as those of elves. Usually she drapes her long hair over her ears, and the black hair reaches halfway her upperarms with a few small waves. This does obscure her ears from sight, though Allyph's intention in doing so is simply her sense of hair fashion. Even though Allyph's eyes are human-like, they stand out due to being a light shade of violet.

Having a preference for dresses, Allyph can usually be seen wearing those. At the start of the story she sets out with a violet dress of simple design. Over her dress she often wears a white cloak. Allyph wears a pair of black flat shoes, but usually the shoes aren't visible due to her dress.
