Healing the Land - Answers

Game Master Tyki11

For unknown reasons, a number of adventurers and heroes have been longing for valley, a place they never been to, or ever heard of. Many have resisted this call, but a handful have chosen to seek out the place and find answers.

Howdy folks, been swamped at work tonight. I was hoping to get A LOT of work done on my character and that didn't work out so well.

Playing a Paladin (Undead Scourge; Warrior of the Holy Light)|Bard (Detective; Sound Striker)dedicated to Torag. He's effectively a witch hunter seeking out dark clerics and necromancers. DM allowed a swap on the bard side from the usual arcane spells to divine spells drawn from the Inquisitor list. The swap really seems to fit the character and means I can still stomp around in my full plate.

I don't see a problem with using items from 3.5, although I am not very familiar with them, so use your best judgement there.

As for a starting point, I'm inclined to either start directly on the island and have our arrivals as part of our back-stories (for a bit of creativity) or a little before, sort of like a 'you all meet on the boat there' type thing.

Oh, and Hi there, Maddox. Glad to have you aboard.

Is there still open space for recruitment? I'm a huge fan of Gestalt and can bust out a character in like 30 mins. I could easily have him fleshed out by the end of the day too. I think I'd go Monk/Ninja and focus on all of those incredible Monk feats that are otherwise impossible to take.

Let me know!!!

I'm sorry to say we're full. Currently there's me, and four players, and that's already almost one to many :(

Rats! Well, good luck with the campaign. Send me a private message if you're in need of a replacement or space filler.

You can play the goblin that's following the group and watches them sleep.

Sounds good. I'll start stating up my ex-girlfriend now.

BAM!

So anything else we should know about before the campaign starts, Corvo?

Should we start working on our back-stories or are there other elements we should know about first?

Awesome. Add him now!

Hey, Maddox, just noticed your character sheet. Got lazy and copy/pasted the GM's character? J/K, just a placeholder right?

He's playing my long lost twin brother with a teary and very dramatic background story.

He showed me the fancy format and I said WANT, cause yeah I'm far to lazy to code all that s$#~ by hand. After losing about 30 minutes work to a log out I stopped working on it here, I'm further along than what's there on an off site doc and will copy it all over when I'm done.

On that note, work (where I do most of the indepth game stuff) has been hammering me lately cause we have some bigwigs rolling through. Nothing directly against me, just lots to do to get ready. Today should be quieter so hopefully I can make some real progress...but best laid plans and all that (I had thought the same thing about yesterday).

Quick question, did they ever do anything to give crossbows some love?

I know it's supposed to be weaker as a simple weapon, but considering it takes a feat (rapid reload) for a light crossbow to match the RoF of a bow it should balance out (it still has a 20ft lower range increment too). I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried something like composite crossbows? If light crossbows are lever drawn then couldn't you add extra pull to it in the same was as bows allowing for a Str bonus?

I know I could just take a bow and save the feat, but for some reason I really like the image of a crossbow. I may have been watching too much Walking Dead lately.

Not that I know of. I think that's the main thing, kinda like Bastard sword, you basically pay a feat to do something on par with another weapon, upgrade it. Either Rapid reload with a crossbow, or proficiency with a bow.

Item Bible has a cool weapon ability for crossbows tho, it's like an extra dimensional ammo box that automatically feeds bolts into the crossbow I believe.

Also, the game will start this weekend, I'm gonna try to add some Rise of the Runelords stuff into it, I've been reading up on the books, but with a personal twist, like instead of goblins, there'll be these impish, western vibe sprites instead for example.

Anyone played that adventure path yet?

@ Maddox
On the crossbow thing, there is still Crossbow Mastery. It's feat intensive (needing Point-Blank Shot, Rapid Reload, and Rapid Shot), unless you start with the Ranger class and get it through the Combat Style (Crossbow or Archery Style) class feature. Then again, we're not exactly bereft of feats right now.

Focused shot is a given of course. From there, its all a matter of personal style really.

You probably already know all this though, but I'm just giving what I know.

@ Corvo
Nope. Been wanting to but haven't had a chance. It'll be a nice surprise for me.

I think there was a weapon enhancement called Mighty that added str ranged weapons.
Also imp. Crit crossbow is really good because keen is a melee only ability. Gravity bow + vital strike is good to.
--------
I tok Roc as my special mount its not on my list but I didn't think you would mind was kind of basing my character as a sky night but I can change it to horse and just cast fly and push it instead if you would like.

Also, if you don't want to spend a feat on Imp. Crit, you can always buy a Bracer's of Falcon's Aim. Gives you the Aspect of the Falcon spell (+3 perception; +1 to ranged attack rolls; 19-20/x3 to bows and crossbows; minus the physical transformation aspect) as long as you wear it.

I was coming in to advise you get that very item. Bracers are a f&+&ing steal at 4,000 gold.
Also, dropping the +1 Natural Armor amulet for a Robe of Infinite Twine, so we'll have all the rope we need.

It'll be perfect against any druids wildshaping into a cat!

Hmm, I realized this could get kind of awkward. I'm a Mousefolk Yokai Hunter (which includes hunting dragons and fey creatures) traveling with a cat-person, a fey trickster, and a Dragonkin.

And an aasimar, but I think we'll get along alright there.

What would you say be better overall: a Ring of Foe Focus or a Gravewatch Pendant?

The ring is a more general but single target defense (+2 to AC and saves against a designated target), while the pendant affects all undead (and only undead) that try to hit me (doubly so for incorporeal undead) at the cost of the undead seeing me more easily (-2 attack penalty for all undead targeting wearer, -4 attack penalty for incorporeal undead, +4 perception for undead finding the wearer).

Actually, I didn't know most of those feats. So many seem like they should just be built in combat maneuvers.

Thing is, I'm not super attached to the x-bow, just thought it'd be something cool and a bit more fitting. After all how often do you see a full armor knight using a longbow in movies and such? I was thinking of using it, but without a str bonus on the x-bow the longbow is such a better choice. I'm already proficient, don't need to spend a feat, and for a paltry expense get a str bonus to damage. I'd spend one feat (Rapid Reload) to make it a viable weapon, but not 4 or 5. I'd also rather not have to rely on a specifically built x-bow or item for it to be viable. Though the Bracers are pretty good, might take them regardless.

So, since we're in a pretty house-rule friendly game already my question would be would people be opposed to adding Composite Crossbows? The longbow is 66% more expensive when made composite, so we could use that as a base or even go more, though by default x-bows are cheaper. As I said before it would make sense, whatever material/design is allowing more pull out of a longbow could be applied to the x-bow. And like a longbow needing that str as a min to use, you'd need at least the str it's made for to load an x-bow.

I wouldn't be opposed to that, crossbows honestly need all the help they can get, but its ultimately up to the GM's discretion on the matter.

Oh, and go with the heavy crossbow if you're going to take Crossbow Mastery anyway.

The main difference seems to be visuals, if that's all, wecould just use longbow stats for martial crossbows, and keep them as they are for simple such as for farmers and militia.

@Mousie
As for the items, I like the necklace.

@ Corvo
Thinking on it, yeah, the pendant would make more sense background-wise seeing as my character spent most of his early career as a spirit hunter/martial exorcist and would use it to ward against ghosts, shades and such.

I think we can just start using the Discussion Thread now, just some last fine tuning of items and I'll be working on posting the intro post to the game, in meantime, feel free to chit chat.
