As Kree greets Kala Kana in common, "Good luck my opponent may we have a good battle." Before scuttling over to his side of the pit, resembling and overgrown brown pillbug.
As each opponent is led up to a platform on either side. As you take your positions an elderly but fit Mwangi man takes position in an examiners seat on one side while a young elven woman takes the oppposite position. The elven woman speaks up, "I will explain the special rules for this match; firstly should you strike the floor of the pit you lose the match, touching the walls or being flung out does not result in a loss privded you return to the fight, secondly the ropes with green markings are greased and the ropes with red markings are weakened to come loose if more than 50 pounds weight is put on them. Good luck, You may... Begin!" You can see the scattered green and red ropes throughout the field often in the most obvious routes from one platform to another. As the elven woman gives the signal Kree's arms unfold to a suprising length and stretch in a matter showing incredible flexibility for his armored form.
Kree's Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Kala Kana |
Kala Kana bows to the elderly Mwangi man.
Kala Kana manifests a pair of dark, shadowy wings on his back. Their gentle beating lifting his feet just off the ground.
Kala Kana's Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Tobaris |
currently it's one on one however they will be drawing for the next two pits as this fight starts so keep your initiative. Kala Kana has initiative to move first, but do your wings interact with physical matter?i.e. Would they get caught in the ropes?
Opponent Raffle: 1d400 ⇒ 250
A tall cloaked man with gold-flecked skin and an ashwood staff steps up.
Opponent: 149, Bein Brennil
As your opponent was drawn first they pick the 1st pit. Each of you is lowered into the pit on opposite sides. There are two examiners this time as well both local human males. Tithin is considered the same as you for this fight, as a matter of fact you have all noticed that a few of the contestants have entered as groups and are being treated as singular entries, such as the catfolk children. However only one necklace is given to an entry for a given battle.
Ashwood's Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Bein has initiative
Kala Kana |
It's not 100% clear in the description, but based on the generally accepted definitions of translucent I would have to say they are solid matter, but smokey/see-through.
I'm still a tad murky on what the combat setup looks like here. A series of platforms connected by ropes? Red ones won't support my weight and green ones are greased? Depending on relative distance of platforms Acrobatics might be the best choice. I'm trying to get him to touch the ground below, and/or loose his number necklace? I believe we are within 30' of each other?
Tobaris |
Hmm I would argue semi-physical then, the occasional brush through a rope would not block it but hitting a tangle or platform would, I would require fly checks to avoid hitting things in this relatively cramped environment.
You and Kree are just barely within 20 feet of each other.
Kala Kana |
Kala Kana's voice booms across the pit, his cadence in time with the flapping of his wings. "Kree I bring you visions from beyond the Doorway! May your deepest, darkest fantasies will devour your brain! A of Va'ak the dragon of nightmares!"
Bazzle Blast-hazard |
spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Bazzle watches trying to figure out what exactly is happening. "Hmmmmm. . . a riddler huh. I'm stumped what did he cast?" He asks aloud.
Leila Redtistle |
Leila is busy tying a piece of blank parchment to a string, making a makeshift decoy of her number tag while contemplating the upcoming competition. Fifty pound and the rope breaks? Good that the tallfolks always overestimate how little is needed to support us halflings... Her train of thoughts is interrupted by Bazzles question and Leila looks up at Kala flying above them in the pit.
"Whoa! Nevermind what he cast - he is flying!" Leila excitedly exclaims. She has only flown two times earlier in her life and the sensation still fills her with wonder. For a brief movement the thrill of the fair and its promise of wonder fades away and is replaced by an strong urge to feel the wind rushing by and see the ground disappear underneath her. She turns to Bazzle, her eyes alight with exitement "Do you think he would let me fly with him for just a little bit ? If I asked nicely ? Do you ?" She sighs "I really like flying - its such a sense of freedom"
Bein Brennil |
Measuring up her opponent, Bein waits, considering her options.
Suddenly, Tithin appears out of nowhere and flashes her outspread wings in their opponent's face, creating a momentary image of an unsettling and monstrous face.
Bein follows up with a simple, but effective immobilization charm, scrunching up her face in apparent confusion and unleashing ancient arcane words of great power: "What's so funny?"
Bein delays until Tithin makes an intimidate check to demoralize, using the time to gain more information about her opponent (race, apparent abilities/protections/weapons, etc. She then casts a heightened hideous laughter (3rd) spell (DC 25 to resist). If the opponent fails, Tithin will move adjacent in preparation to grab the man's tag, otherwise she and Tithin keep their distance.
Tithin's Intimidate check to demoralize: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (1) + 28 = 29
Tobaris |
Tangle Pit Fight:
Kree's Will Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 Kree appears to stare dizzily off into space. 1d100 ⇒ 92 He focuses on Kala and Flings himself across the pit hissing violently.
to hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 Kree's clawed hands swipe at Kala's missing him though barely.
Your Turn again Kala.
Flood Pit Fight:
As the match begins several of the barrels are overturned and begin pouring water down the sides of the pit turning the walls rapidly into clinging mud and the wooden floor is quickly being covered in water.
Nat 1's are unfortunate. Tithin's attempt to demoralize Bein's opponent seem to do the opposite although Ashwood's grin does reveal him as human and male somewhere between his 20's and 30's though his gaunt figure implies illness of some sort. He begins gesturing and mumbling. Still your initiative Bein you are 20' feet away from him.
Kala Kana |
I am using a reach weapon, so I may have gotten an AoO?
Smiling, Kala Kana taunts the Kree. "Yes brother, now you see don't you? Let Va'ak guide your mind!"
Kala Kana flies above the Tangle Pit out of the reach of the Kree.
Withdraw action, flying up at 1/2 speed (30') at a 45 degree angle.
Tobaris |
Yes you would have then. You'll also need to make a fly check to avoid running into things.
As the last raffle pull's up numbers it appears Leila and Henrick will be fighting each other in the rubble pit.
As they find their positions a pair of burly men take the examiner posts next to each wagon. Each of the wearing thick gloves. "This test will be violent and chaotic, we will be randomly through these stones into the pit as falling debris, most of them are plaster and will not harm you some are not. Using them against your opponent is encouraged. Good luck" Leila and Henrick are 20 feet apart facing each other along the only clear path from one side of the pit to the other.
You may each roll your own initiative
Bazzle Blast-hazard |
"What it the world is this? What out of the world is this?" Bazzle looks about to see if he or it is noticed. He investigates the item.

I've not really had to deal with Flying much before as a player or a GM so I'm going by my best understanding of the Fly skill. I'm not trying to be difficult, I just want to understand the rules in play. Also in retrospect it seems like putting a few skill points in Fly might be in order if you'd be ok with that change after this fight. Using the following wording to decide my prior course of action:
Check: You generally need only make a Fly check when you are attempting a complex maneuver. Without making a check, a flying creature can remain flying at the end of its turn so long as it moves a distance greater than half its speed. It can also turn up to 45 degrees by sacrificing 5 feet of movement, can rise at half speed at an angle of 45 degrees, and can descend at any angle at normal speed.
I'm still pretty unclear what this arena looks like. I've tried re-reading the descriptions several times and the best I can come up with is my previously unconfirmed assertion. The area has many different platforms at various heights with green and red ropes connecting them. I'm missing the visuals where this would make what' I'm doing into a 'complex maneuver' I guess.
Fly: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Thanks!
Leila Redtistle |
Leila smiles and waves at Henrick when their numbers is drawn. "Let´s see if we can't keep the hurting at a minimum, shall we?" As she enters the she laments the fact that Henrick knows her, which will make her original plan of deception much harder. Luckily she might have a backup.
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
edit:
Leila enters the pit with her shortsword drawn and the numbertag tied to her belt. As the signal to start comes she quickly conjures a solid brick wall 10 ft. infront of Henrick, obscuring his vision. She then quietly makes her way to the other side of the wall and uncoils her whip in her other hand.
Halfling luck I guess.
Standard action to cast a spell to conjure a wall right between Henrick and Leila. The wall is ten foot high and runs 20 ft. across the pit. Then a moveaction to move at less then half speed silently (15 ft., no stealth penalty) to a spot along the wall within ten feet of Henrick.
Stealth to move silently up to the wall: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (20) + 24 = 44
Henrick the collector |
Well since I can't see you I can't really do the knowledge check on that.
knowledge arcana: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 no idea yep, can't roll worth a damn fail to identify ongoing spell effect
ready an action to shoot if a target presents itself.
Leila Redtistle |
Quickly catching her breath, Leila realises that Henrick did not see thru her illusion. She peers thru the translucent wall at Henrick then takes another quick second to steel herself for the oncoming pointy sensation. She stops concentrating on the wall the movement Henrick gives an opening and lashes out with her whip intent on depriving Henrick of his numbered tag.
Takes no action to concentrate on spell so the wall disappears. Move action to feint, then standard action to disarm (if Leila fails with 5 or less, she will use her intermediate action to use Gallant Inspiration for an additional 2d4 retroactively). You have your free perforation with your arrow before any of this occurs (except the disappearance of the wall).
Bluff: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19 vs 17 (10 base + 7 HD + Wismod)
Disarmroll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 vs CMD (without dexterity if the feint succeeds)
edit: I guess it was my turn for the Dreaded One of Infinite Suckyness [tm]. But the attackroll seems solid enough and Leila will try and make it connect with Gallant Inspiration.
Realising that she misjudged Henricks attention and attacked right in his guard but still with a solid attempt, Leila whispers some quick magical words of encouragement to coax her whip to stretch fourth the final distance and seize her prize.
Gallant Inspiration additional bonus on the attack roll: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4
Leila Redtistle |
The concentration check only occurs if you deal damage while I am casting the spell. Since you readied in response to seeing me and not me casting, and since the spell has a casting time of "intermediate", there is no need for a concentration check. Anyway spell also failed to have the desired impact (got my total up to 23 vs your CMD of 24 :) ) so it don´t really matter. If you manage to bring Leila below 20 hp she will yield, realizing that it is better to conserve her strength for the remaining trials.
The arrow narrowly grazes Leilas cheek, a few inches to the right might have been her end, drawing forth a spray of blood which stains the ground of the pit. Her last attack having failed with the slimmest margin possible, she renews her effort and goes for the same tactics again. This time she hopes she can manage to distract the archer and deprive him of his tag.
Move action to Feint, Standard action to Disarm, if the attack roll is within five follow up with Leilas last level two slot as Gallant Inspiration.

On the bright side, it was explained that the weapons were replaced with illusionary doubles so it isn't real damage, or that's the way I read it.
"Hmm, illusionary wall, tricky one aren't you?"
Rapid shot, deadly aim
to hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
to hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
to hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 whiff
Leila Redtistle |
Ooops! Missed the part about the illusionary weaponry. On the bright side, does this mean Leila can disbelieve the damage from your bow? Might make it hard to sunder however ... :)
"Well - it would appear that my trickery is no match for your pointy witt" Leila gives Henrick a quick smile and gestures towards the two additional arrows neatly logged in the cloth and chainmail over her heart. She makes one final attempt at liberating Henricks numbertag.
Same procedure as last time. I guess this is Leilas last chance to win this round - for I foresee arrows in her future.

"Nope, I suppose not."

Then he will walk over and remove the tag to finish the task.
"And sorry about the pain, even if it is an illusion. "
Leila Redtistle |
Leila sits up on the spot where the last arrow dropped her, rubbing her chest and chin. She grins at Henrick as he comes over to collect his due. "Not so much the pain as the chock - It felt so real" She looks around her, searching for the stains of blood that were there just a few seconds earlier but she sees none. "They must have a really dedicated illusionist to pull a stunt like this of" She stands up and hands Henrick his prize as he approaches, adding with a big smile "Good luck in the rest of the trials, maybe we will have the pleasure of seeing alot more of eachother in the future" She turns her gaze towards the sky "And other wonderful things"
Tobaris |
A round of cheers resounds as the fight between Leila and Henrick finishes before the examiners even get the chance to start throwing boulders.
Leila's comment on the difficulty of such an illusion rings true especially if it is being cast on three pits at once.
Kala Kana |
Fly: (hover - DC 15) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Kala Kana watches Kree, his face blank. His eyes roll upward in his skull as he begins flapping his arms in opposite beats of his shadowy wings, "Aphoom-Zhah come forth from the void and feast on this foolish creature before you!" A swirl of black-green energy engulfs Kree and the temperature noticeably drops instantly.

Interstellar Void (Su):
Bein Brennil |
Bein begins casting deep slumber against the man (one round casting time, DC 25).
"Now it's time,
to go to Sleep,
rest your head,
count some sheep."
In the meantime, Tithin continues trying to demoralize the man:
"You're going to drown if you keep laughing like that."
Intimidate check: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (8) + 28 = 36
Should he fail his save and fall asleep, I will spend the round walking up to his helpless body and tearing away his tournament necklace.

Bazzle:

Bein:
Will save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
The wizard stumbles and collapses against the wall of the pit snoring loudly. As you walk over it appears that he has done something to his necklace as it glitters from his neck.
Bazzle Blast-hazard |
Bazzle looks around with a rakish sneaky grin. Well if I fix it now it might go back to casting illusions as designed. Sooo I will want to keep it as is for now.He picks up the 'cloaking device' and makes his way over to the next available combat pit. He steps 2 feet away from the device and announces, "I am ready when for the next challenger!" I hope this works.
I hope I am not out of line exploiting this but . . . Certainly no guaruntee it works the way I think.
Bein Brennil |
Bein hesitates a moment, pulls out a thick protective glove from her pocket, and places it upon her hand as a simple precaution.
"Tithin, has he enchanted it? If so, what might I expect?"
Tithin flies close enough to use detect magic, and does so, hoping to garner more information about the necklace.
Spellcraft check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
While Bein waits for more information from her companion, she carefully lines up a swing with her morningstar, hoping to sunder the necklace (or at least pull it away from its owner).
Like a pro golfer, Bein takes her time. I don't think an attack roll is necessary against a helpless opponent, but I'll roll if the GM insists.
Leila Redtistle |
Leila takes Henricks hand as an invitation to accompany him and as such follows him around until either one in summoned for another trial, Henrick makes his escape or something similar happens. She attempts to discuss a wide range of topics ranging from the inner workings and cultural impact of stills to the joy of flying - and if Henrick is uninterested in conversation she will blabber on on her own.
Henrick the collector |
Henrick will keep up a conversation with Leila. He's had to listen to spoiled nobles blather on at end about topics of which they knew little enough. By comparison, this is actually a gem of a conversation. His wide range of knowledges enables him to be a good talker, though he does tend to be rather reticent, as he learned long ago that letting the others speak leads to less trouble.
Tobaris |
No attack roll necessary
It appears to be enchanted with a strong evocation aura.
Henrick and Leila enjoy walking around a bit and enjoying the town.
Bazzle has to wait a short time while the raffles sort out the next two rounds.
Tobaris |
Kala Kana's fight:
It's your turn again he's stuck in confusion for a bit.
Bazzle is able to watch the next fight in the flood pit between the ogre in armor and the catfolk children. A small voice that sounds as if it is coming through a metal tube speaks, "Repair this unit, accomodations will be made." Only Bazzle seems to hear it.
Karrick notices something odd around the gnome near the flood pit, it appears as a flickering bubble, like a mirage seen at great distance. In noticing it he is distacted and nearly tumbles into a small halfling and a human walking through the crowd.
Kala Kana |
Fly: (move less than 1/2 speed DC 10) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Kala Kana flies forward so he is within 15' of Kree. Kala Kana's hands come together in the shape of a sphere and he calls out again "Aphoom-Zhah finish your meal!" A swirl of black-green energy engulfs Kree and the temperature noticeably drops instantly.
7d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 3, 5, 3, 2) = 24 DC 18 Fort for half.
Bazzle Blast-hazard |
Hmmmmm I am being tested outside of the tests. Perhaps that is more valuable than a trinket of invisibility. "Okay." Bazzle address the air about him.
Bazzle moves to an area with the probe that is a little clear and not pressed with spectators. He pushes back into place the loose components.
Leila Redtistle |
Captivated by her discussion with Henrick Leila don´t notice that she is on collision course with the bald man until it is almost to late - but she managed to stop in her tracks in the last second.
"Whoah ! Sorry mister - almost ran into you." she eyes him quickly before letting out a short laughter and a giggle. She looks up at Karrick with excitement in her eyes and tilts her head to the side "The last person I ran into today sprouted wings of shadows and sorcery - I wonder what you will do?" She quickly realises that she spoke out loud and blushes and corrects herself "I´m sorry - all this excitement is getting to my head. I'm Leila and my friend here is Henrick" She points over to the pit where Kara is fighting and smiles "And that is the man with the wings" She tries to look Karrick in his eyes thru his glasses, but can´t really see them. Karrick however can easily tell by the look in her eyes that she is still hoping that he will be just as wondrous and exiting as the other people she met today.
Henrick the collector |
"Nice meeting you sir " Henrick says as his companion addresses the stranger. Goggles? Kind of odd, wonder if they are one of the magical types. Nice equipment if that's the case.
turning back to Leila
"Shouldn't we be finding out next matches. We're not going to qualify if we wander around gabbing and gawking. "
Tobaris |
Kree's Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Kree shakes violently and tumbles from the platform.
As soon as you do so the probe jumps up into the air. "Thank you for your assistance you may ignore any trial but the Trial of Fate if you wish."
