The small island of Navigato is often shrouded in mist and fog, history states that this island once held proud mountains peering over the Varisian Gulf, however no sign of these mountains exists today save for the rolling hills surrounding large fields. These fields are empty of all stone larger than a mans chest. A small town, Magnam, has settled on the island and it is enjoying a tourism boom due to the actions of the Knight of the Hills.
The Knight of the Hills is a near mythical figure that has been seen by the islands inhabitants for generations. Only in this last year has he been seen regularly and he has now deigned to speak with villagers and outsiders. The Knight calls himself Amalgus and was long ago cursed to forever wear his armor. Amalgus seeks to bring together a crew to undertake a grand voyage beyond any ocean ever travelled. Amalgus has not said why or where this voyage shall take place only that it shall be a story worthy of legend.

The town of Magnam is enjoying a festival as today is the final day of choosing before Amalgus shall take his crew to the vessel. Amalgus has devised 5 tests to choose his crew. The Trial of Skill, The Trial of Combat, The Trial of Magic, The Trial of Wit and, The Trial of Fate. All hopefuls must win at least two contests to join the crew.

Today the local townfolk could enjoy not only the festival, but an influx of new and exiting people wandering their streets. These peoples hearts were filled with hope and dreams of taking to the skies. Among these newcomers where what appeared to be a young girl dressed in purple and earth-like colours, but on closer inspection was a halfling woman.

Having arrived late last evening by boat, Leila was relived that she got there in time for the crew selection. Relived and anxious. It was the first time in a long time the prospect of travel actually made her anxious but as the the trials crept nearer the realisation that she might get to visit the stars themselves began do dawn for her. She had rented a room at the local in tavern and, after restless sleep with grand dreams, she had decided to spend the day enjoying the festival with the locals.

The was a grand spectacle, and Leila wanted to see it all. She saw the fireworks, the strongman and man whom could swallow and breath fire (a trick she once had considered learning herself, until she realized that it involved filling your mouth with lamp oil. yuck.). She bought an caramelized apple on a stick, but in her mind, these mundane wonders soon paled in comparison to the mysterious challenge posed by the knight Amalgus. How could he really take to the stars? Who was he? And why did he need help? Was he lonely or maybe just curious as herself? These were the questions she kept coming back to in her mind as she wandered about.

What a lovely little town. Not only do I get to enjoy a festival but I have made a few coin performing at the local pubs. Still I hope to be chosen for the mission Amalgus promises. Bazzle enjoyed the sights and the sounds of the festival. He stopped for a caramel apple. I’ve had apples . . . I miss the apples of Kyonin. Those elves were good with the fruits. I’ve had caramel and it is good. Even as he waits in line alone he distractedly puts his hands together as he thinks about putting the caramel and apple together. He chuckles.

Oh now, what’s this a little girl she seems to have no parents . . . but she has a lot of gear. Bazzle having paid for his apple waits for it to be served. He sees Leila, ”Hello, forgive my intrusion, have you lost your parents. . .” On closer look Bazzle realizes that ‘girl’ is actually a Halfling and not as young as he feared. Way to go Bazzle make friends, ‘Hi Stranger you look like a kid.’ He mocks himself in thought. ”Oh forgive me. I mean forgive me for real this time last time it was just a polite thing to say. Now I may have insulted you because I thought you looked so young. Human women want to be thought young is that true of halflings. So curious. Bazzle Blast-hazard at your service what brings you to this island and to the festival?”

"What do you mean you're canceling the order for the Ankheg?!? We had a deal!"
Herick almost yells at the foppish nobleman in his taxidermy shop in Oppara. "I risked life and limb getting that carapace and stuffing it!"

"Yes, but creatures from Golarion are so yesterday. What with the Worldwound wide open, if you don't have at least a demon in your Salon you are purely gauche. You simply need to do better dear Henrick. Maybe you could make a stab at some demons up near the Wardstones. I've heard there's no shortage of them. I'd pay good coin for a stuffed Marilith. That would make me the talk of the town. " he replies in a bored cadence.

This man is absolutely insane, what does he think demons are cute fuzzy bunnies?
"Umm, right. Well I will consider what you say, but for the moment, what am I do to with this mounting?"

"Oh, try somewhere in the sticks. They might still be impressed. Maybe Corvosa. Well tata, I have some simply dashing new ettercap silk hose to pick up for my appearance in court."

Dammit, that's the fifth of those weasely cretins to stiff me on my work. If this continues I'll be ruined. Perhaps I will have to give Corvosa a shot, Oparra is just not working anymore for this business. Time to pack up then.

So Henrick is forced to pack up some of the more choice new additions to his wares, organize his normal crew, and make an expedition to Corvosa in the hope that the rather less jaded nobility of that city might be interested in his product.

After an arduous trek to Corvosa, he is able to unload his wares on the local nobles, but Corvosa is not the gilded city that is Oparra. The nobility is comparatively poor, and while he did make sales, they were for far less than he was accustomed to at home.

I simply can't make a business like this. I need to find things which will get me back in good graces with the bearded class of Oparra, but without having my hide dragged back to the abyss to be tortured for eternity.

While sitting in a local tavern with his crew, Benson, one of his best scouts pipes up "Well boss, that coulda gone better. "

"Yes I am well aware of the situation. As I pay a flat wage to you lot, I'm quite a bit lighter in the purse than I would like. I just don't see a way out. The fools in Oppara with the money all want demons, and I don't wish to die. Do I look Mendavian? Like a crusader? I think not. "

"Yeah, I got that chief, but I think I mighta heard something which could help when I was out and about last night. There's some place called Navigato and some knight or such called Amigalus is recruiting for an expedition which is supposed to "go where no man has gone before" or something like that. I figure you can probably find something nobody has seen which could wow them rich fools in Oppara. "

"Ahh, brilliant! That must be it. I'll have to get up there immediately and look into that. If I can get a slot on that trip the business can be saved. "

And with that inspiration Henrick sent his staff back to Oparra with the meagre returns they had secured in Corvosa and traveled on to the little town of Magnam, on the isle of Navigato.

Hmm, I think the term hamlet would be generous for this collection of hovels. Well it's not like I'm selling here. I just need to make it past the competition he thinks to himself as he wonders the street (mud at that) amidst the crowd that easily exceeds the local population.

With weather fair and crowds thick with spectators and participants, the town of Magnam is a welcome distraction to the coastal peoples of Varisia who have come to see the spectacle that the knight Amalgam has brought. It is not for the love of adventure of glory that some have come to take Amalgam's tests, however, for not all journeys are ones of interest. Rather, sometimes journeys are more like escapes; flights of necessity more than fancy.

Among the crowds gathered in Magnam is a traveler who has come thousands of miles, crossed an entire continent and the Inner Sea to arrive at this very island. To the people of Magnam he is little more than another wanderer come to see the sights or test their strength and skill. Karrick Margandan, however, is neither of these things. The desert-weathered breastplate armor he wears featured battered decorative designs of Nidalese design, chain-patterns along the trim of gauntlets and greaves, the metal having a dull, matte surface marred by scratches and scuffs, impact dents and gouges. Worn over it and concealing much of the armor is an ankle-length brown cloak frayed at the edges and threadbare in patches at the back, coated in trail dust. With naught more than the armor on his back, Karrick sticks to the thick crowds and fringes of gathered groups to observe the preceedings.

Eyes shrouded by smoky-lensed goggles, the bald-headed Alkenstar native isn't looking to pass trials or tests, isn't looking to draw attention to himself. Instead, he's looking for a one-way trip to anywhere far, far away. The first task in discerning how to do that, is figuring out by what means the knight Amalgus is going to be taking this journey.

To that end, Karrick begins the process of scouting out the town and its people, looking for answers.

__________
Karrick isn't going to attempt any of the trials and is going to go right for the "stow away" option, but first he has to get a lay of the land and figure out exactly what is going to be happening/how this "journey" will take place.

I'm looking to have Karrick gather some information about the town from its people (supplemented by the results of his knowledge (local) check) and use this information to better approach the situation.

If anyone would like to bump into Karrick on his "research" trip, feel free. He could wind up practically anywhere in town. Fair warning that he won't be a great conversationalist yet and will be rather brusque, but what fun is there in starting out as friends ;)

As the festival goes on Karrick can see a variety of strange folk, even those that would normally be unwelcome in such a town, from an ogre wearing full-plate with the symbol of Saerenae on his chest, to a pack of tumbling catfolk children. As he searches for rumors he finds that Amalgus intends to leave midday tomorro with a caravan of supplies and his new crew. The location of his vessel is hidden and as he plans to leave after the caravan loads up it's location won't be known for long.

He also learns of the unusual geography of the island which consists of three roughly circular groups of hills pressed against each other. The southern most containing the town and it's center bearing the anly 'mountain' on the island an the source of the river that feeds the town's water. The other two have large empty ovoid fields in the center of each set of hills, these fields even seem to cut off some hills like a knife. The northeast one has a reputation for vanishing any structure built on it without harming it's occupants. The northwest one has only allowed one structure to survive, a small stone well. The hills and small forests of the island provide well for the community and it's isolation protects it from most predators.

The first Trial opened is the Trial of Skill. It seems the Knight Amalgus is busy with preparations as he has left all but the last trial to be officiated by the Mayor.

A very elderly fellow completely bald and wearing thick spectacles walks up on stage slowly. He is wearing a light blue shirt with darker pants, under an open white robe and blue slippers.
"Hello and Welcome everyone. I have good news! I am here to officiate these contests, but I am not the final judge. Sir Amalgus will make his decisions and it will be announced tonight one hour after the final trial." He waves his hand to the field behind him covered in all manner of worktables, firepits and various tools. "This is the Trial of Skill. All contestants will be searched before entering. It is your goal to build, repair or, aquire objects that would be useful on the journey. You may take as long as you wish to achieve your goal before the bell signalling the final trial begins. You may leave whenever you wish to gather supplies or materials, but you will be searched on both your exits and entrances to the field. Please return your items to the judging stall with your number placard attached." He holds a wooden placard up with a number 7 on it to show the crowd. During sign up every contestant is given a number which they will use for every Trial. After sign up is completed all who are competing in the first trial line up next to the field.

When the whistle blows the field becomes a flurry of activity as people claim worktables and swarm resources and junk piles.
A pile of parts that could be used to build a ballista catch Bazzle's eye.
While a pile of furs and skins could be made into useful clothing by Henrick. Leila wanders for quite some time looking for something to put her skills to before she notices a series of chests, next to a small sign.
The sign reads, Alternate Challenge: Open at least three chests without out breaking them, place the objects inside together to turn in. Those who bring back the most interesting and complex projects will be graded accordingly. The chests are of various different sizes and makes, a few contestants are trying their luck.

Female Kitsune Sorcerer 7 (crossblooded)

Off a short distance, a beautiful human young woman can be seen forcefully pulling herself out of a throng of apparent admirers. She wears a close cropped green tunic and shorts with a great many pockets--obviously made for traveling. Bein’s amber eyes are as bright as the morning sunrise, while her silky blonde hair frames her high cheekbones and small lips. Her muscles are firm, but not easily apparent, her bosom is soft and luring, her petite frame feminine and beautiful.

She dashes towards the gnome and halfling, stopping only to shout and gesture back at the would-be admirers.

.
"When crazed lovers doth encroach,
may grass rise and stop approach!"

Suddenly the grass around them sprouts up to impossible heights before crashing down upon them like so many monstrous tentacles looking for flesh to devour.

Out of breath she bends at the waist, placing her hands on her quadriceps.

"I think that might hold them for a while."

She does not even seem to realize that she has clearly interrupted the two small-folks' conversation, nor that her current stance offers her fans a tantalizing view of her hind-quarters (their resulting struggling only making their predicament even worse).

After a moment, she stands up straight and introduces herself. In the background behind her, a small fairy creature resembling a cat-sized elf with butterfly wings can be seen going from one entangled victim to another, sprinkling golden dust over their heads, causing them to visibly relax, cease struggling, and stare blankly into open space.

"I'm Bein, Bein Brennil. Wondering merchant extraordinaire. Would either of you be interested in purchasing some love potions," she asks as she gestures towards the crumpled kids behind her. The fairy creature lands gently on her shoulder as several would-be rescuers get caught up in the tangling mess as well. "They are all the rage."

Female Kitsune Sorcerer 7 (crossblooded)

As Bein follows the small-folk to the sign up area, her lyrakien familiar, Tithin, catches wiff of a magical aura nearby. Curious, she focuses momentarily and wonders towards its source as a distracted cat might a flying insect.

Within inches of the eidolon, she stares directly at it with a puzzled expression on her face, unknowingly blocking his view.

After a brief pause, she shruggs and flies back to her friend.

Looking around and seeing few supplies left over for her own use, Bein searches around until she finds a few twigs. She then sits down, presses one stick against the other, and begins spinning it in between her palms in the hopes of starting a fire.

Let them make their fancy tools. There is no tool more important than fire.

After several bouts with failure, however, she stands up, obviously frustrated. Tithin pats her reassuringly on the back. After a moment, Bein begins to brighten noticeably as an idea forms in her mind.

"When victory is beyond all sight,
may aid come from nature's might!"

The contest area is suddenly filled with entangling flora of all kinds. Bein simply smiles at the stymied competition nearby (DC 17) as she freely grabs several of the resulting vines and begins calmly knitting a tightly woven hammock out of them. It is readily apparent to all present that she is completely immune to the spell's effects.

Bein takes a 10 on her craft check for a total of 11 and is aided by her familiar, who is also immune to the spell effect.

"Even a tortoise may out-race a hare if the hare trips before the finish line, she calls out mockingly. In a more serious, darker tone, she continues. "When traveling to the unknown, you must be prepared for the unexpected." She finishes in the caring voice likened to that of a concerned grandmother, "If I can't give you fire, I will strive to give you a merchant's wisdom instead--for the wisdom of a well traveled merchant may just save your life one day."

Tithin's aid another: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

If the Craft skill's example table is any indication I don't imagine a hammock would have a DC higher than 10--what's more it could easily serve as a blanket, fishing net, stretcher, or tent; alternatives she is all too quick to point out to the judges before the spell's effects end. What's more, Tithin attempts to strengthen Bein's case and sway the judge's decision with well-worded diplomatic argument, which is itself backed up by Bein's input.

Tithin's Diplomacy check with +2 bonus for auto-success aid another from Bein: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (8) + 22 = 30

Love poition ? Hmm mm Leila ponders the tall ladys proposal as she races with Brazzle towards the test area. Maybe if I were to buy one and give it to the Knight ... heh . Atleast I got a plan B now! As she runs of in the distance she adds "Don't forget the fireworks!"

After wandering about and just enyojing the scenes of creativity and chaos, she finally found the small sign detailing the lockbreaker's challange. However, it appears that it is currently surrounded by a smaller crowd of people no doubt also trying their luck. She sits down on an already opened chest when she gets an idea! She pulls out a sheet of parchment and an inkpen from her backpack and begins to write down something on the papper.

First she writes I can speak this language. in common. Then in halfling. And then in sylvan. She continues to write down the phrase in all the languages she knows, to a humming tone. As she finishes with all her know languages, she takes a quick look around before uttering a quick spell. Byssan lull, koka kittelen full, på himmelen det vandrar tre stjärnor. Den ene är så vit, den andra är så röd, den tredje är månen den gula.

As the magic takes hold of her, she continues to write down the phrase in a multitude of knew languages made know to her by the magic. Elven, Dwarven even Celestiall and Terran along with many others makes it unto the sheet of paper before it is full of text. As she writes down the final line, she notices that the tall folk hogging the chest have either given up or goten what they wanted and she decieds to try her luck on them aswell. With a big smile, and a parchment clutched tightly in one hand and a set of lockpicks in the other she makes her way towards the few still locked chests.

This might be a slightly creative use of the tounges spell, but I hope it's okay - and I think pathfinder acually supports the veiw that if you can speak the language, you can write it unless othervise stated :)

Stalking through Magnam for an hour, Karrick quietly discovers a wealth of information about the town and its people. Familiarity with the Varisian region was something Karrick had sought before heading out from Osirion across the Inner Sea. Now, presented with the enigma of this competition and its mysterious overseer, Karrick was glad to have been armed with both foreknowledge and a smooth enough conversational tone to learn what he needed to.

Armed with the knowledge that he likely won't be able to find Amalgus' craft on his own, given that he was able to conceal it from crowds of spectators on a small island with no appreciable cover, Karrick devises a plan. Amid the observing crowd, Karrick does his best to stay hidden, stalking through the onlookers and using the crowd as cover to coneal his own observations of the participants in the knight's games.

Somebody's kid? The hell's she doing in-- wait. Halfling. There's always a halfling. Hope this one's got a better attitude than Pervince. Seems decent enough at what she does. Try'n play on her sympathies if things go poorly.

Slipping back into the crowd, Karrick finds another vantage point, this time spying on a shouting Taldan man looking incensed.

Taldan, probably National. Wiry, carries himself well though. Good posture, footing. Got himself a boxer's intuition with his body placement, somebody who's taken a punch or two in his life. Ain't remarkable looking, s'probably an act. Cobra in the tall grass.

Disappearing once another spectator moves in front of him, Karrick circles the areas the competitors work at. Eventually, he comes upon the blonde woman that had caused so much havoc among the competitors.

Clever girl. Probably too clever t'pull one over on, have t'try something different if it comes to it. Somethin's... wrong about the way she moves. Can't put my finger on it, maybe it's nothin'. She's built like a bundle'f twigs, though... probably got some mean magic. Clever people'n magic, never liked that.

Turning away, Karrick moves back into the crowd and finds another face to scrutinize, yet another little person, drawing a derisive snort from the skulking Alkenstar native.

Huh, looks like someone stuffed a toddler in a grown man's greaves. Big sword for such a small fella, might be a deterrent, probably not judging from the way he wears it. Anklebiters everywhere.

Content with his assessments so far, Karrick slips back into the crowd and awaits the results of the first competition. No guns anywhere, he muses to himself, not on any'f 'em... Disappointin'. A feller with a gun's always over-confident about their range. Being in Varisia is like a different world to Karrick, magic openly utilized without fear of primal reprisal or outright failure.

It was a whole different array of threats to assess.

Leila manages to open one of the chests and finds it to contain a large pipe of an unfamiliar but suprisingly light metal, roughly the size of her fore arm, a scattering of symbols along the pipe seem to indicate one side serves a different purpose than the other.

Karrick gains a prickling feeling of being watched several times, but he cannot place the observer. As he explores the town he is able to find one of the wagons that will be leaving tomorrow, unattended.

Leila is able to open two of the three chests she tried her skills on. The first chest contained an ovoid object slightly smaller than her chest, made of the same metal as the pipe, the object has several holes one of which has a symbol matching one of the ends of her pipe. The second holds a far stranger object, it's a pipe of some sort except it is flexible and ridged, one end fits into the ovoid object as well.

Quickly putting the three pieces together by slotting the two tube like object into the main piece. She ponders for a while as she inspects the device and quickly realises that it would take many more parts to complete the design. She decides to go with her first plan and pitch herself to the judges and puts the half-ready object in her pack. "an object that would be useful on a journey" she thinks to herself as she makes her way towards the judges.

When its her turn to approach the judges she takes a moment to gather her thoughts and steps forward. "Hi, I am Leila .. As she makes it to the table were the judges are sitting she realizes that only her head manages to reach over the edge. She deftly climbed ontop of the table before addressing the judges once again.

"Hi! I am Leila and I brought you this!" She fires of a bright smile and pulls forth the sheet of paper on which "I speak this language" is written in a multitude of languages. "If you travel to distant places and meet strange new people, the most important thing is communication. And I bring that very essential item to any voyage. Ask me anything in any language". She giggles "And I will respond in the right language atleast"

If the judges is unimpressed with her performance she will also give them the three pieces she claimed from the three different chest. Shall I roll diplomacy or something to help convince the judges that language is actually an useful object?
