Oops. Yeah, Smiley takes the damage, not Jillia. I think I had the order of attacks switched at one point, but we'll go with Smiley taking the hit.
Sadly, Kharg and Smiley's attempts to attack the intruders were woefully short.

"HEY! We can't let you burn the place to the ground! You were warned!" Nella's voice rings out as she calls upon a very simple blessing that she learned as a neophyte priestess. Suddenly, water seems to spill out of thin air, drenching the flaming papers.
"Get 'em guys! Boot to the head!"
Create Water on the fire square; hopefully that's enough to put it out. And I think I may have to change Nella's alignment to CG once this adventure is done with and before all her character stuff gets locked in...

"You're out of your league, tallfolk," Jillia remarks to the Aspis flanking her as she (5-foot) steps out of their pressure. "If you are less interested in throwing away your lives, surrender is always an option, we can put out this fire, and talk like civilized people," she says, hoping to disarm them with a smile.

"Look out Jillia, there's one behind you!" Markus calls, moving into the centre of the room. He points his hand toward the ground, and a thin sheen of slippery liquid seeps up through the gaps in the marble floor slabs.

Alright, Smiley! If you say so!
Kharg turns to the right and sees Jillia taking on two opponents. He attempts to disengage from his current foe, bit his graceful maneuver is foiled by a slippery marble floor. Nevertheless, he continue on to one of Jillia's attackers, attacking with a two handed swing of his ax.

"Smiley, can I leave you with our friend here?" Markus asks, pointing at the looter on the floor. He turns away without waiting for a reply and drops his morningstar to the floor with a loud clang. Bending down, Markus grabs the rug from the floor and drag it over toward the burning papers, ready to try to beat the fire out. "We've got to get this fire out before we all end up overcooked like my pa's roast pig," he calls to no one in particular.

Kharg's doing his part, gotta do mine. Gotta think fast.
Jillia rushes to where the fire is spreading, knocks a chair out of the way, and flips the nearest rug atop the flames, hoping to smother it.
Not sure what check it is to extinguish a fire, so feel free to roll it for me.
Penelope 'Nella' Tabor

Though a part of her longs to turn and chase after the fleeing straggler and give him a good thrashing with her weapon, Nella is pretty sure that the Society higher-ups would frown on them letting the place burn to the ground. Grinding her teeth with frustration, she calls out, "Let them run; they'll probably be found by one of the other groups! We need to get these fires put out!"
Working to finish what she started, Nella moves to join Jillia and Markus in putting out the flames.

Kharg's double swings take his opponent from hale and healthy to near death in the span of seconds. Seeing that he was alone and surrounded by enemies, he does the only wise thing and attempts to flee!

Smiley and Jillia continue making impressive firefighters, forestalling the need for Markus' rug intervention. There is, however, one fleeing looter that's just at the edge of Markus' range of Acid Splash...
Acid Splash!: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Markus flings acid into the back of the fleeing looter, causing him to stumble and fall right at the entrance of the hall!
On the bodies of the looters, you find the following:
potion of cure light wounds,
alchemist’s fire (only 1, the other set the fire!)
holy water,
oil (2),
healer’s kit (2 uses remaining)
breastplate,
heavy wooden shield,
cold iron dagger,
heavy crossbow with 20
bolts,
longsword,
bedroll,
tindertwigs (2),
whetstone,
wooden holy symbol, 3 gp
Jillia Perception Skill: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Kharg's Perception Skill: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Markus' Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Nella's Perception Skill: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Smiley's Perception Skill: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
With the threat of fire resolved and the looters driven off and defeated, you have time to seek out Aram Zey's notes on the Hao Jin Tapestry As you rummage around through stacks paper and piles of books, Markus spies an incongruous book on the top of one of the Southern Bookshelves, mere feet from where the fire spread to. Investigating further, he discovers that inside the hollowed out book, there are notes penned by the Master of Spells to be what you were searching for!
Success!
Notes in hand, you set off towards the Tapestry Chamber!
Moving things along a tad, but you can stabilize the looters if you'd like before moving on. They're both unconscious, however.
Penelope 'Nella' Tabor
|
With the last of the fires put out and the looters taken care of, Nella simply plops down on the floor for a moment to catch her breath as some of the others check to see what's on the bodies. "Is everyone okay? Jillia, you took a nasty hit earlier..."
I think all three melee folks took some damage there. Just holler if you want Nella to use a channel (still getting the hang of playing a cleric).
Once her companions are taken care of, she moves to check on the two looters now that they've been stripped of their gear. "May as well patch them up too, even if they tried to kill us and burn the place down. I'm sure the Venture Captains wouldn't mind having a few more of these Aspis people in custody, too."
Unless anyone objects, she'll stabilize them and tie them up.
As she works, her eye is drawn to the holy symbol that one of the looters was carrying. "Well, what have we here?"
Kn. Religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Nella would take the holy water unless someone else really wants it; everything else she's not too concerned about :)
Kharg

Nella, I took a stab in the back from one of those scum, and I think Smiley and Jillia are a little worse for wear.

Jillia runs a fingertip along the slit through her chainmail and her skin, wincing a bit.
"I guess I'm not in the best of shape," she says, chuckling nervously. "I never seem to notice it until after the fight, though," she adds, smiling like a child who found out she was in trouble.
A channel would be lovely.
Penelope 'Nella' Tabor
|
"Ooh..." Nella winces as Kharg shows off his newest battle scar. "Yes, we'd better patch up a bit before we move on. I'm still getting the hang of the 'triage' phase when it comes to mending wounds, but this is good practice," she jokes weakly as she calls upon divine aid to heal her companions.

Smiley seems to have forgotten the nasty gash in his side, but discovers it anew.
I still gots my guts. I've had worse.
As Nella's divine healing surges through him, he feels much better and the gash becomes a scrape.
Ha! It's not as bad as I thought. Luck of the Seventh Son!
I'd suggest Smiley & Kharg take the CLW potions, as the 1st-levelers most often face-to-face (or in Smiley's case, face-to-stomach) with baddies. But I'm happy if someone else has a reason to take them.
