Quiven checks out the door at Carl's behest, then swings it open.
This room contains three low tables, their tops covered with a strange — and chilling — selection of tools, saws, long-bladed knives, and objects whose purpose is not readily apparent. An odd and macabre collection of bones lies near the southern table...too many to be one skeleton, yet too few to be two. A thick coating of dust lies over the entire room.
Quiven Glist
|
Creepy. Quiven will walk into the room and take a look around, hoping the others will follow him inside. The last thing I need is some skeleton coming to life now.
So, this Greed guy, seems he should have a treasure room or something around here, right?
Maddie Sykes
|
At Carl's mention of Detect Magic, Maddie enters the room and casts that spell. "Unless it's well hidden, any treasure he left would most likely have been looted by the goblins or Nualia."
| GM thunderspirit |
Quiven and Carl start cataloging the gruesome utensils while Maddie looks for magic.
Maddie doesn't see any auras beyond the (very) faint residual transmutation aura that has been perceived all over this level and the previous one.
Carl finds that the surgical tools on the two tables nearest the door are exquisitely made.
Quiven finds that the surgical tools on the table furthest from the door are finely crafted, but one — a silver-and-gold seven-pointed star, with one surface studded with tiny nodules and blades while the other features a thin, curved handle — looks out of place; though it too is well-made, it doesn't have the same practical, unpleasant applications as the others on the table. It almost has the appearance of a key.
Quiven Glist
|
Look at this one. Ever seen a tool like this before? Quiven shows the party the item in question - a silver-and-gold seven-pointed star, with one surface studded with tiny nodules and blades while the other features a thin, curved handle. It doesn't look like any of these other... things. It kinda looks like a key, huh?
Maddie Sykes
|
"That is strange, perhaps you should keep it handy." Maddie suggests, looking around the room with a frown, "I can only imagine the kind of transgressions that occurred here. Perhaps we should not dawdle here too long."
Despite her words, she still takes a long look around.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

Quiven puts the strange item into his backpack. Okay dokey, Carl. Quiven proceeds to the door to the south and begins doing his thing.
| GM thunderspirit |
Maddie, you can check Carl and Quiven's spoilers above for the results of your Perception check.
The doors to the south are made of stone but bear no handles. An indented outline of a seven-pointed star, its shape covered by hollows and slits, graces the spot where handles should be.
Quiven doesn't detect any traps or hear anything beyond the door. However, when he looks closer at the door, he doesn't see any locking mechanism either; there doesn't appear to be a way to open the door that way.
Quiven Glist
|
As Ander speaks Quiven's hand was already reaching for the odd gadget he had picked up. Looking back to be sure the rest of his friends were ready, Quiven will try to place the "key" in the "lock" and see what happens. If need be he'll try to to turn or otherwise "unlock" the door.
| GM thunderspirit |
Someone can feel free to open up the room on the map, as I'm currently on my phone and can't do it.
As Quiven brings the odd tool to the door, it melds into the carving and the door swings open effortlessly.
Unlike the past several rooms on this level, this room is partially lit, though dimly, by a 10-foot-long pit of flickering fire. The room is filled with a strange humid heat and an unpleasant scent of burning hair.
In the corners of the same wall as the door, wooden risers each hold several dozen golden candles that burn without melting, while on the far side an immense carving of a seven-pointed star is centered on the wall.
Quiven Glist
|
Why do I smell burning hair? Quiven asks as he steps into the room. Maybe one of you magic-using types might know something more about this place. Why the candles and the fire?
Are there anything in those little alcoves on the opposite wall? Can Quiven see anything burning in the fire? Anything of note about the drawing on the wall? If checks are needed let me know or you can roll.

Heh, the alcoves are supposed to be secret doors. But I guess they're not now, LOL. Stupid map. :-)
Quiven moves to the right about the central fire pit and peers into the alcove, where he sees a silver coffer lying on a shelf.
Beleg moves in and begins to detect magic, sweeping the room from his left toward his right.
The candles on the shelves glow, then suddenly he sees a sizable glow in the southeast corner, which becomes visible as it lunges forward on all fours at Beleg with its snarling, canine jaws, a strange humanoid combination of bat and wolf yet its slender front limbs looking more like hands than a wolf's paws. The creature seems to shift in and out of reality at random.

Ander, did you calculate for firing into melee? If you did, you hit; if not, sadly, you missed.
if Carl misses his attack by 1...le sigh
He did not.

Beleg invokes Spell Combat on the beast (50% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 67); his Black blade strikes true and, due to his archetype, is magical and thus seems to deal full damage, but the Magus fails to concentrate long enough to finish his mirror image spell and it fizzles!
Carl (who presumably five-foots to get in melee range) sees his scythe whistle beneath the monster's chinny-chin-chin!

Ander takes out and throws a tangleburn bag at the creature.
RTA, In Melee: 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 - 4 = 20
Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
A tanglefoot bag is a small sack filled with tar, resin, and other sticky substances. When you throw a tanglefoot bag at a creature (as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet), the bag comes apart and goo bursts out, entangling the target and then becoming tough and resilient upon exposure to air. An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity and must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be glued to the floor, unable to move. Even on a successful save, it can move only at half speed. Huge or larger creatures are unaffected by a tanglefoot bag. A flying creature is not stuck to the floor, but it must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be unable to fly (assuming it uses its wings to fly) and fall to the ground. A tanglefoot bag does not function underwater.
| GM thunderspirit |
