Loud and raucous conversation filters through the door from the common room of the Uscalin Lodge, which doubles as the
Ace of Dreams gambling house. “I know it’s here. I had it just a moment ago.” Venture-Captain Shevar Besnik lifts piles of papers and numerous boxes off of his desk, stacking them on various side tables and chairs in his clean but overly cluttered office. The tall, Varisian man’s face parts in a toothy grin as he lifts up a solid oak box. “Found it!” As if to punctuate his discovery, a crowd of players in the gambling hall erupts in cheers. Distracted for a moment, Besnik stares at the closed office door that leads to the common room. “Desna laughs. Well, she laughs at me, but she smiles on them.” The venturecaptain shrugs. “All they have is gold; what I have in here is far more valuable.”
Besnik opens the box’s lid painstakingly slowly, careful to keep the contents out of sight. With reverence, he lifts a large tome from the box and gently sets it on the table. “Careful, the binding hasn’t held up well. This is one of the few Tomes of Righteous Repose left in the world. I’m pretty sure there’s one in the library of the Sancta Iomedaea in Vigil, but I’m—well, let’s just say I’m no longer welcome there. That’s a story for another time."
“Up until today, I’ve only skimmed the pages. I didn’t want to damage it, but now that you’re here, I can’t wait any longer. Care to plumb the depths of this most ancient and wonderful storybook? Oh, the marvelous adventures we will soon read! This tome is a collection of tales describing how various crusaders died gloriously and honorably. I’m hoping to find some clues in the text that will lead us to an as-of-yet undiscovered site or relic. Maybe we can trade a bit of what we find with the Knights of Ozem and earn ourselves some goodwill. After what happened last time, we need it.
“Care to peruse the pages with me?”

A not so tall but slender lady, with long dark hair and black eyes, and the pale skin that shows her race as being that of the Dhampir, the rare offspring of a vampire and a human, Lucita listens to Venture-Captain Besnik, smiling when he mentions the people in the gambling hall.
Dressed in dark grey, with black-Leaf Armor peeking out from beneath, Lucita carries the Holy Symbol of a Stone Monkey, carved in ebony (those who know recognize it as being Sun-Wukong, the Monkey God from Tian Xa - deity of drunkemness, nature & trickery).
At her belt, a hefty spell component pouch, with various foci strapped to it (such as a set of small gold-plated scales), and on her back a Handy Haversack.
In hand, a cold-iron tipped Longspear (and a Cestus strapped to the forearm).
Lucita smiles, but declines Besnik's offer to look through the tome: "I am not one for repose, righteous or not... I prefer turmoil and action, to set people free".

A disturbing figure with muscular, marble-white skin, long straight black hair with an odd turquoise tinge, its sex unguessable beneath an immaculate kimono and exquisite metal-and-cloth mask that reveals nothing but its bright, cold almond-shaped eyes, like two distant stars, and with a massive midnight-black sword, hexagon-shaped spellbook, and sheaf of wands at its side, sits calmly (almost motionless) and head and upper body rigidly tilted toward the book for a better look.
No salient skills for this, I'm afraid.

A keen-eyed, pale, blond dwarf bearing a blood- and gut-stained warhammer eyes the tome with obvious glee. "Now THIS is what I signed up with the Society for! Not to go gallivanting around a comet!" He grabs at the book somewhat rudely in his eagerness.

"If you have no questions, I suggest we dig in. I simply need your eyes and your minds for now. Let us see what mysteries this will reveal to us." Venture Captain Besnik opens the tome, and then carefully begins to page through it. Some of the tome is no longer readable, but other portions seem to be in much better condition. About twenty pages in, there is a bold colored image of three samurai, in a Minkai styled drawing. The Venture-Captain jolts upright. “Minkai art! Let’s see, the Minkai Empire was founded in 3619, and the empire’s first explorers didn’t reach the west coast of the continent until at least 3691 ar, which leaves only sixty years before the beginning of the Shining Crusade itself. These women could have been among the first Minkai citizens to reach the Inner Sea! Let’s see, what secrets does the poem on this page hold?”
You are able to make out the poem that accompanies the art:
Stranglegut are legion, forces of death,
Soldiers of the lich who were promised might.
A bold samurai struck forth; in a breath
A thousand orcs struck down before her sight.
From tow’ring giant green, a challenge thrown;
The chieftain Slarg upon the bloody field
That she would stand in front of him alone
And not for less than death would either yield.
With cries of faith cast to the rising sun
The brave samurai charged and met his steel
Her blade she shoved beneath his ribs, she spun
A scratch from poisoned blade forced her to keel
In Torag’s house the elf was last interred.
With view of Kala’s Tears, her peace insured.

Lucita nervously taps her foot on the floor, thinking that "he'll soon be wanting us to search for some location named Kala's Tears"...

![]() |

I would prefer to do things that are written about than read about things others did. So what is it we are supposed to be doing? This Kala's Tears, what's that? Grag muses out loud, pointing a large index finger to the part on the page.

"It sounds like this samurai was truly heroic. This battle must have taken place near a waterfall in Belkzen called Kala's Tears. Perhaps a relic of that battle could be found near there."

![]() |
"Excellent, if you are ready to head into Belkzen and find whatever there is to be found at Kala's Tears, then we can make preparations right away." The venture captain pauses for a moment, reigning in his obvious excitement. "Perhaps we should get a better idea of what you will be looking for. Hmm, perhaps if we consider what we know of Belzkin, and if we examine the other parts of this closer."
About Belzkin...
Hordes of orcs live in the Hold of Belkzen, most of which is a barren wasteland with terrifying creatures and very few resources.
Fresh water is one of the most important commodities when traveling in Belkzen, as there are very few natural sources available.
Most major orc settlements and fortresses are in the ruins of castles and keeps built by the Shining Crusade or the dwarves before them.
Sonnet of the Shattered Sword Knowledge...
A shining crusader charged into battle alone against a horde of orcs. Before dying, the crusader fought through the ranks and slew the chieftain, sending his clan running. This story is often used to teach faith in the face of impossible odds.
The vast Stranglegut Clan was under the control of Tar-Baphon.
When the sonnet’s hero died, the crusaders buried her and her sword, which had shattered against the orc’s bones, in a dwarven ruin. After the orc chief perished, his hordes fled. Without this victory, the Shining Crusade would have suffered major losses.

"My apologies agents. I'm late... My name is Raynor Cordite. I have been dispatched to help escort you wherever you decide for this mission. This is Mozza, a combat-trained riding lizard, which has proven to be useful mount in various types of terrain. I can help you handle any beasts you'll bring along, and I've been trained in the arts of seamanship."
The knight sports a well-balanced lance and an assortment of daggers strapped in a bandoleer, which rests atop a gleaming fullplate adorned with golden seagulls. A beautifully sculpted darkwood shield is also adorned with a painted large golden seagull shown in full flight.

![]() |

Lucita listens to Barl's tale, and thanks him for sharing such knowledge.
"Well met, Sailor Cordite! Does Mozza know how to swim?"

![]() |

"Enchanted to make your acquaintance, milady. Like all animals, Mozza no doubt has the instincts necessary for survival. However, it is not a sea snake, if that's what you're asking." Chaine dismounts, bows to Lucita, removes his gauntlet, and gently takes her hand to kiss it. "I must again reiterate my apology for my tardiness. Part of it was finalizing the training of Mozza here, as I have only acquired the stalwart mount recently, and his exotic nature provided me with a certain... learning experience. Yes, the trainee can teach the trainer a few things at times, and in this case, it was in the form of new, previously unmet types complications and hurdles as part of his training."

Well, I'm glad everyone is getting acquainted. You all have a journey ahead of you. Please get prepared for a journey to Belzkin leaving first thing in the morning. I want you to find Kala's Tears, and with it, the tomb of this Elven Samurai from Minkai. Ensure her remains have been properly buried, preferably handing them over to the Knights of Ozem. Oh, before you ask, I have some things that I can send to help with your journey." He hands you a wand of cure moderate wounds (5 charges), a wand of protection from evil (7 charges), and a traveler’s any-tool. He then begins digging through another box. "I had expected to need to hire more experts to identify a location, but since you came up with the location yourselves, I saved some money. In return, I'll send this as well." Besnik provides you with one potion of bear’s endurance and one fire ward gel.

![]() |

Raynor offers to carry the two wands as he's been trained to use similar wands before.
Until end of module, adding: wand of cure moderate wounds (5 charges), wand of protection from evil (7 charges)

![]() |

"Thank you for your kind offer, Raynor, but I do believe it would be better for me or some other healer to carry those, since I hope you will have better things to do when time presses and we are in battle, whereas I have no martial skills such as yours".

![]() |

"Indeed. You would be better off with the potion and gel, Sir Raynor. I could take the traveler's any tool if no one else needs it."

![]() |

I can help in carrying, if things are getting a bit heavy for anyone. And uh, Gorum sees fit to let me cast a few spells. Though he prefers his powers go towards fighting. If things get bad, he'll begrudgingly let me help heal.

![]() |

"Ah, of course, ladies and gentlemen. I am at your service, and if you can use these wands yourselves, I am happy to oblige and serve in battle instead!" says the paladin, apparently relieved to be able to serve in a fighting capacity.

![]() |

'Thank you, sir Knight", says Lucita as she slips the two wands into the straps of her spell component pouch.
Adding temporary wand of cure moderate wounds (5 charges) & wand of protection from evil (7 charges)

Xukong shows the party two of the wands at its side, one a red coral wand shaped like a pitchfork (infernal healing), the other a verdigris-coated copper wand tipped with a stylized obsidian sunburst, as well as a few flasks filled with translucent black liquid (inflict light wounds).
"If I should be harmed," It says in a voice like a cold wind across the surface of some barren world, "use these to repair me. I have...special sensitivities."

![]() |

Raynor frowns upon seeing the red pitchfork.
[detect evil (Sp)]
"I can help with the flasks, if it comes down to it, but I will not touch this red coral pitchfork, as it appears associated with the powers of darkness. I suggest you make arrangements with another agent if this one is crucial to your health or perhaps purchase alternate means of health recovery. What appears to be a quick path of success sometimes imprints a debt on your eternal soul, and I hear Pharasma's accountants don't miss a thing, in the end..."

![]() |

"I do not wish to leave my companion alone in his predicament, so I too will say, like him, that I would appreciate it if people avoid 'healing' me with positive energy, else I meet Pharasma's boneyard too soon".
Indicating two dark wands and a dark potion flask, all three readily marked in Common as being wands of Infernal Healing and Inflict Light Wounds, and the potion as Inflict Light Wounds, she points out that it is best to use the potion upon her if she were to fall, or else the wands if people can.
"Be not afraid, Knight Raynor, for I may heal you with pure positive energy, in no way tainted... as well as deal with wounds inflicted upon my comrade Xukong".

Feel free to continue the RP interactions. I want to make sure I get us to the dungeon on time to finish before slot 2.
After a couple weeks of searching (with rations and supplies provided by the venture captain), you have located Kala's Tears. Climbing halfway up a rocky mountain to a wide ledge, the you reach an obvious entrance carved into the rock. Hot winds blow ash through the air; it collects against the rocky wall of this ancient structure. Four stone columns mark the entrance, where a fifteen-foot-wide stair descends into darkness. What was likely once fine dwarven statuary has been destroyed over the years by weathering and vandalism. You can still make out vague shapes of dwarves, although they are now unrecognizable.
I've linked the maps to the campaign page.
Shizuran tradition is to cremate the body on a pyre under the midday sun, then distribute the ashes to the deceased’s descendants. Similarly, Lastwall’s tradition is to cremate the entire body save the skull, which is etched with the name and dates of birth and death then placed in The Ossuaries of the Fallen in Vigil.
