After resting at the oasis, the party starts off fresh in the morning. The remainder of the journey through the desert proceeds uneventfully, with only the rise and fall of the dunes to break the monotony. A low, uneven hill of granite appears on the horizon to the northwest, presenting the only shelter for miles around. Although the crag appears solid from a distance, on closer examination there is a wide fissure in the rock sealed by a heavily weathered stone wall fitted with a large iron door.
GM Tektite |
Examining the gate, Rapunzel sees that it is heavy and partially buried by sand, yet it is unbarred, not trapped, and can be opened with some work and muscle.
She also notices the archway’s ceiling contains a recessed inscription in Ancient Orisiani that has avoided the worst of millennia of erosion.
Rapunzel |
Huzza for ancient osiriani!
"It welcomes travelers and offers protection from the desert winds."

"Huh. That's very odd. Fastenhyme, look here." Rapunzel points to a chipped portion of the inscription. "Originally it offered safety from the winds, but someone has changed it to the winds of time. What do you suppose that means?"
Edit, thanks GM Tektite!
Izoki Stoneclaw |
"I can't make beak or feathers of Ancient Orisiani, but I can scout ahead and look for danger."
Upon permission of the group, Izoki loads his musket and moves ahead among the shadows.

Arovandeon nods at his companions deductions and continues to make notes and sketches, also making a mental note to add ancient Osiriani to his list of studied languages.
"The alteration in the meaning of the words appears accidental, but it is a curious accident. Perhaps the true meaning can be found within."
GM Tektite |
Deciding to enter, the party pushes on the iron door. After much cursing, finger pointing and sweat, the party manages to get the door open.
Izoki creeps in, passing underneath the outer wall and sees a small courtyard.
The wind gusts about this small courtyard, filling the air with fine grit. Corpses litter the area, little more than bone and desiccated, leathery skin. A dry well occupies the center, surrounded by the remnants of an outdoor market, though even the best tent is tattered and leans precariously. To the east, a set of low steps rise to a set of stone doors surrounded by symmetrical wall carvings of pharaohs. Stairs to the south ascend to the outer wall.
GM Tektite |
As Izoki continues to scout, several of the corpses rise and begin shuffling toward the party!

Arovandeon quickly moves off to the corner near Izoki, then reaches for a vial hanging from the chain around his neck. Flicking a small catch, the stopper opens on a small hinge allowing him to quickly upend and consume the contents.
Preserved in an alcohol solution, the mutagen burned going down and left an aftertaste of almonds and paraffin oil. Almost instantly a tingling sensation began at the back of his neck, then in the tips of his fingers. His jaw clenched as the muscles in his body contracted of their own accord. It left him weakened physically, but the benefits far outweighed the drawbacks. A moment later the tingling in his neck rushed upwards, setting his brain afire.
With his intellect enhanced, Arovandeon considered the enemy, his mind racing through a dozen books in his memory.

Marianne opens the western door to find stables. This modest brick building provided housing for a caravan’s beasts when the fortress was active. Only the stone has survived intact, with empty sockets for lanterns at even intervals. Ancient tools for leatherworking sit on a table to the south, next to an empty stone trough. Barren stalls line the north wall.

Rapunzel moves up and checks the other single door, opening if it appears safe.
