Ayesha moved in alongside her companions, staying close to Sarkast. As Nilus opened up with his challenge, and offer of redemption, she placed a hand on Sarkast's shoulder, ready to cast a spell should things turn difficult.

Ready an action to cast Greater Invisibility on Sarkast if things go south.

Edit: Seriously, Nilus? o_0

.

Nilus strides into the shrine, ignoring the stench of the abominations and the horrific sight of the fanatics. They slowly turn, and radiant line positively shines from the Knight of the Rose. He finishes his simple question, and they say nothing, staring at him. Finally the pregnant woman screams at the top of her lungs, and collapses to the floor, sobbing. The others follow suit, wailing and prostrating themselves before Nilus chaotically.

One women scratches at the floor wildly, shredding her nails into a bloody pulp. She looks up at Nilus.

"There is no return for us... a monster grows in me."

Nilus offers hope

Birth is a gift of life to the world. Nothing that has been disfigured cannot be remade again, whole and beautiful. Nilus plucks a Rose from his waist (He wears a belt of Roses(fake handcrafted ones) and offers it to the woman.

To know the Rose, is to accept that we must make the world better each day. It cannot be done all at once, but it can be done.

Nilus places aside his weapons and embraces the woman, heedless of the danger that this might place him in.

But it all begins with a choice, you must choose. The life you knew, or something more beautiful.

The "rules" are exceedingly vague and imho stupid when it comes to engaging with enemies. They pretty much assume a fight to the death in 100% of cases, and options like a nonviolent paladin who uses his words first almost don't exist. I'm thinking hard about taking Divine Source at 4th and 6th Tiers so that I can cast Atonement because its not a paladin spell and I don't want to burden someone else with my roleplay.

Sarkast, jaded by an entire life spent on the edge of the Worldwound, is moved by the sincerity and purity of Nilus' words. He touches the amulet on his wrist and says a silent prayer to his own deity in hope that the cultists take the paladin's words to heart.

Personally, I enjoy Nilus's roleplay.

Dejik watches her friend stride into the room alone, confident that she will know the instant he is injured. As Nilus speaks to the cultists, she gasps at the divine power that radiates from him. It's as if his goddess herself speaks through him, she whispers in awe.

As soon as Nilus gives the word, Dejik will come in and tend to the cultists as best she can. (Her take 10 on Heal is 25.) She's currently too entranced by the paladin to do much else.

Female Magus 12 | AC 26 T 16 F 21| HP 102| F +9 R +9 W +8 | Init +11 | Perc +18

Me too. Normally, PC interactions go like this. As a GM, I find it annoying. This is delightful!

"Indeed it is, Dejik. I knew he was...different than most, but this is far above and beyond the usual pandering to talks of goodness. I feel...dirty...in his presence sometimes."

.

It IS delightful. This game has a heavy theme of redemption and Nilus has played heavily into that. The trick is finding non-violent resolutions that require more than one roll, which are mechanics that don't quite exist.

The cultist takes the rose, staring at it numbly. Her hands twist as if she's trying to destroy it before her hands unclench and she just stares at it.

Dejik rushes in to inspect the cultists. The women bear horrific scars on their abdomen; Dejik's knowledge of Lamashtu would indicate they have given birth to powerful demons this way, which claw their way out. One woman is probably six months pregnant. The man with the peeled skin has likely benefited from daily healing to simply keep him alive. The partial demonic transformations they have gone through are possibly reversable, although would require powerful divine magic. The transformations to their bodies are extreme enough that the damage to their souls may require decades to repair. However, Nilus has given them hope.

One speaks. "What do we do now?"

Nilus' Consumables Nilus' New Friends Paladin 7 Sentinel 5/MT 5 Guardian | AC 27 T 16 F 26 DR 5/EPIC | HP 166 | F +18 R +13 W +17 | Init +8 | Perc +13

Well, the Atonement spell is one concrete mechanic, unfortunately its a 5th level cleric spell and the only way Nilus is gonna access it is with the Divine Source mythic power... However, I have an idea.

My name is Nilus Romani, I am a servant of the Blessed Rose. The Goddess Shelyn is a beautiful and loving mistress, she will not treat you unkindly. Pledge yourself to her now, this very moment and you will walk with us through the Worldwound. Prove yourselves worthy of redemption by helping us rescue another trapped here. There is a succubus nearby, she is at a Bell Tower, one protected by an artifact known as the Bell of Mercy. Do you know of it? Nilus asks

Surely helping rescue a trapped Demon who wants redemption is one way to begin earning redemption...

.

Ooh, interesting.

They look up at you blankly.

"The Desnan redoubt? We know of it, but have never gone there."

The three don't even look at each other, as they are so transfixed by Nilus.

"We will do it for you! You can show us the new way! Yes!"

They start babbling amongst themselves and after a while give their names.

The male with the face peeled back is Darus, a half-elf. The pregnant woman is a human named Nyx, and the other women is also human and goes by Kuthie.

One by one, they stand before Nilus. Nyx calls back to the cave ceiling.

"Demon Queen, Mother of Monsters, we forsake you!!" They scream in somewhat disturbing ecstacy, and tear off their symbols of Lamashtu, throwing them to the ground. One then grabs a spear, and charges for the cages which contain the half-living abominations, and starting stabbing them again, and again.

[b}"YOUR MONSTERS ARE NO MORE! I AM FREE!"[/b]

Nilus steps in front of the newly converted Shelynites.

With a kind voice he says

No no my friends. This is not how we begin. Not with killing. We begin with a Rose. We begin by seeing the beauty, and possibility, with everything. If it is Fate that something must die, I will relieve you of this burden.

Nilus doesn't want their first act as converts of Shelyn to be murdering their own offspring, no matter how hideous or demonic.

Lady Dejik and Lady Ayesha will bring you outside. Master Sarkast and I will discuss what to do here.

Basically, if the half human things can be set loose harmlessly Nilus is in favor of that...and if not then he will do the deed himself. He believes in life, but not at the expense of others.

Male Kellid Rogue (Unch) 11 / Urban Bloodrager 1 / Trickster 5| AC 29(32 w/Cmb Exp) T 18 F 22 | HP 122/122 | F +7 R +14 W +5 | Init +11 | Perc +21

Sarkast is alarmed as the cultists suddenly turn on the caged creatures. He stands back, letting Nilus take the lead, but has his hands near his blades in case they are needed.

I know Nilus can determine whether they are evil (and possibly get an idea of how evil), but I'm not sure how to tell how dangerous they would be to themselves or others. Do they show much in the way of intelligence or awareness?

Dejik quickly chants a spell, then calls out to the cultists. Please, stay your hands and restrain yourselves. Nilus will guide you well--listen to him. Casting Calm Emotions.

Nilus, I'll help as much as I can. There are spells that may purge the evil from them, but I will need to learn them. In the meantime, I can sanctify this area and protect them from further influence.

Dejik has both Protection from Evil and Consecrate.

.

The calm emotions spell is accepted. The abominations within the cages appear to not have much time left anyways - failed experiments that will be gone by the morning. Dejik then spends some time to cast a consecration spell, the effects of the magic are enough to lift the horrible pang over the area. With that, you're able to rest comfortable, with the three former cultists under careful watch. Darus occasionally pulls out a potion of what appears to be cure light wounds, and dabs it along his face as a sort of soothing lotion.

Nilus can easily detect incredible evil from them, although forsaking Lamashtu has robbed them of any clerical abilities they had, and also their aura of evil. They are very much intelligent and aware, but a lifetime worshiping a goddess of monstrous births tends to warp one's conception of reality. It is also very clear that whatever Nyx is going to give birth to, it will not be a human.

I'll let you sort out how you plan to deal with your new followers and then push to the next area.

Female Magus 12 | AC 26 T 16 F 21| HP 102| F +9 R +9 W +8 | Init +11 | Perc +18

Ayesha stood by with little to do as Nilus and Dejik handled their newly freed cultists and consecrated this place to wash away the taint of evil. Her only real contribution was to stand watch over their new recruits, a task that was simultaneously necessary and unworthy of the faith their new followers had exhibited. The best she could do was to make them comfortable.

When the morning came, she was still at a loss of what to do. They needed to press on to the Desnan redoubt, and likely with these in tow. It would slow them, and she wasn't happy about having such unknowns at her back, but they certainly couldn't leave them here alone, and to send them back to the army with no escort was a sure death sentence. She explained her thoughts to the others over breakfast.

Thanks Dejik

Nilus will take time each day to instruct the new Shelynites in the rituals and orthodoxy of the Church. Nilus instructions are simple, they are to fight only in defense and run/hide as a first resort. As for Nyx's pregnancy, Nilus hopes they will make it back to Drezen before it comes to term... surely there would be magic there that might help them right the wrongs that Lamashtu inflicted upon the unborn child.

The idea for travel is that the newcomers will stick with Nilus throughout the day and at night they would be surreptitiously watched by whomever was on watch.

Sarkast keeps a watchful eye on the newcomers as the group travels. I want to believe they are truly reformed, but one can never be sure when demonic influence is involved.

With your three (probably) reformed cultists of Lamashtu at your heel, you head northwards. The cultist have excellent arms and armour, and shield themselves from the elements in dark red full plate mail and carry falchoins. Although robbed of their divine powers, they are still formidable warriors.

Their behaviour towards Nilus is one of near-worshipful deference. Almost immediately, they begin attempting to discern a sort of hierarchy in the group before deciding that the charismatic Nilus is their leader, and that the more subdued Sarkast is obviously his servant. They completely avoid Dejik and seem particularly unsettled by Darb N'ssiar.

Ayesha:

The creature that grows in that woman's belly is not safe! Be careful mother.

It takes several more days of travel to reach the redoubt. Thankfully the fact there are now seven of you means that potential dangers keep their distance. Finally you come to the redoubt.

A mostly collapsed castle dominates the landscape, sitting within a copse of petrified trees. A bell tower is one of the only truly intact buildings, where it stands in the southeast corner.

The group is approaching the redoubt from the southeast, and can see it at a distance through the copse of trees.

Let me know how you'd like to approach the redoubt.

GM:

"Thank you for the warning, blade of my heart. We shall be watchful, and let Nilus have his mercy."

She waited for an opportune time, then mentioned the warning to the others.

"Darb N'ssiar can sense a great danger coming from the child-thing in the woman's belly. I know Nilus wishes to be merciful, and we will not sidestep that, but we all know who put that abomination in that woman's belly, and what it is likely to turnout to be. It tears me apart to say this, as I have craved a child of my own for years, but we have to be ready to sever the child from this world, rather than let it endanger us all. "

To Ayesha's warning:
"I feared something of the sort might be true. Is there a way to see, when the child comes, whether it is purely demon, or if it has a mortal soul that might be redeemed?"

At the redoubt:
As the group approaches the redoubt, Sarkast scouts ahead to learn what he can. He circles the area, looking for breaks in the wall or other ways in and out, and checks for tracks indicating recent activity.
Mythic point for impossible speed, then take 10 on appropriate checks: Stealth=27, Perception=30, Survival=26

.

GM Rolls:

Perception: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (6) + 26 = 32

Sarkast makes an incredibly swift circuit of the fort, getting a good idea of the layout. There are two entrances - one to the north and one to the south, with the road the group is on leading to the south entrance. Two drakes of some kind with riders are positioned on rooftops to the east and west of the keep. More alarmingly, he's spotted as he scouts out the eastern side of the keep. The drake rider sounds a horn, and then dives into the keep. However, there's no further action.

"Well, that could have gone better. Poor Sarkast. And he was trying so hard to be careful. Those scouts must have eyes like eagles to have seen him. I was looking for him and I still could barely pick him out among the rocks."

"What now? The stealthy approach is out. Shall we just march up to the doors and demand surrender?"

"Indeed they have, as evidenced by our new companions. I say we move up cautiously, prepared for an extended battle, but hope we can negotiate for the woman's release."

.

Resolved to deal with an up-front approach, you make the climb towards the fort, heading up a winding path to the copse of trees. As you enter the clearing towards the fort, you hear a cry of defiance. Two drakes with riders rise up above the battlements, and speed towards you!

If you have another ability or effect that reduces damage (such as protection from energy), reduce the damage with the absorb blow ability before applying any other damage-reducing effects. Free action to drop bow, free action to enter Bloodrage, free action to activate Daredevil Boots. Swift to spend a mythic point for Fleet charge to move around then get a free attack at +3. Full attack action with Haste. All attacks go against the rider on the unmarked drake; if by chance he goes down, switch to the drake itself.

Four Acrobatics checks to avoid AoO's. I'll apply the penalty for multiple targets rather than making you sort it out on their CMDs.

That's 12 rolls of a d20. Statistically just a bit low of average (mean 9.4, median 10) but I sure wouldn't mind smoothing out those highs and lows!

EDIT: Forgot to add: If sneak attack hits, target is unable to make attacks of opportunity for 1 round. In addition, target is Bewildered (-2 AC, -4 vs Sarkast) and Disoriented (-2 attack, -4 vs Sarkast) for 1 round. For each additional sneak attack, extend duration by 1 round or until a new effect is applied. This might help later attacks hit.

Ayesha jerked as the lance penetrated her abdomen, then fell to the side as the drake rider yanked his weapon free. Her hand dropped to the wound, but as she felt around, there was no sign of the injury. In awe, she looked at Dejik, only to find Nilus was the one grimacing with pain that wasn't his.

In determination, Ayesha spun through the air, flipping Darb N'ssiar over her wrist as she cast her spell. She moved in, pinioning one drake between herself and Sarkast. She launched herself at the rider, coming up over the drakes snout, even as the man turned to defend against Sarkast's blows.

Swift to activate mythic arcane strike (keen), cast intensified shocking grasp as part of spellstrike attack, full attack. If rider is dead before Ayesha attacks, hit drake instead

As the drakes charge, Dejik shakes her head. Nilus will be sorely disappointed.

I'm not sure how Shield Other and Paladin's Sacrifice interact, but it's possible that Dejik takes half and Nilus takes half.

Dejike feels her comrades' wounds as they transfer to her, then is shocked as Ayesha's wounds transfer to Nilus instead. Concentrate on ending the fight, my friend, she whispers, and let me worry about tending the troops.

Five points of damage transfers from Sarkast and Nilus at the start of Dejik's turn.

Sarkast - how are you making the sneak attacks? You have no flank and the drake rider is not flat-footed. I may have missed something. The rider is still up regardless (barely), but lemme know. Dejik I agree, that seems simplest.

Sarkast moves in an explosion of power, at one point springing off of the tip of the upraised lance of one of the drake riders. There's an explosion of electricity, which Sarkast uses to propel himself behind the rider and drake. He stabs repeatedly, with a few of the blows landing solidly. The drake rider is still very much up though.

Ayesha ladders up the other side of the drake to attack the same rider. There's an explosion of electricity as her shocking grasp spell connects, Darb N'Ssiar singing a joyful song only Ayesha can hear. Remaining in the back, Dejik absorbs the horrific blows on her companions, but fights through them, healing everyone as best as she is able.

In the back, the cultists huddle, staying down per Nilus' orders.

The drakes and riders counterattack with a rider shouting "Get that damn healer!".

The two drakes rise up, and both expel balls of caustic gas towards Nilus and Dejik! It explodes outwards, harming everyone but Sarkast!

Nilus and Dejik get the wort of it while Ayesha leaps out of most of it. The cultists scream as they are brutally scarred by the acid, and Darius begins laughing hysterically. Worst yet, the caustic gas sticks to your limbs, slowing them.

"LET US KILL! LET US KILL!" shouts Darius.

The riders rise up with their lances, stabbing down repeatedly. Nilus and Ayesha are both struck several times, their blood staining the ground below.

The cultists take 54 damage. Nilus takes 54 damage. Ayesha takes 89 damage. Dejik takes 54 damage. Nilus, Dejik, and the cultists are slowed for 1d4 ⇒ 2 rounds, which will temporarily suppress the haste spell! Everyone is up! Plain rider is very, very near death.

Casting communal resist acid: Ayesha, Nilus, and the cultists all have resist acid 30 for 20 minutes; Dejik has 10 minutes. (Touching up to 6 people is a full round action.)

Spending a mythic point to use Mythic Initiative to take an additional standard action.
