GM Snorter's Rise of the Runelords Campaign

Game Master GM Snorter

1 to 50 of 60 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I am considering running a Rise of the Runelord PBP here. I havent played now for a couple of years (I have been playing since 1987) but want to have a go at running this. What I am looking for are 4 -5 people who dont have much experience and want to get involved in a fun campaign.

Please be aware that I have never been what you would call a rules lawyer. For me the story is more important. Therefore I will not be using maps or dice rollers etc. Its more in the description.

Any one intersted should post here with a quick character concept. I am after 'traditional' characters, so nothoing to funky. Just stick with the main Pathfinder rules for now.

Postings will be on a semi regular basis (i.e. I will try and do it daily), and expect players to do the same. But if life gets in the way, I won't penalise players etc.

To speed things up i would even be willing to let players use the pre generated characters for the campaign. Basically we have a ready made adventuring party . All stats etc will be supplied.

Valeros
Male human fighter 1

Born a farmer’s son in the quiet Andorian countryside, Valeros spent his youth dreaming of adventure and exploring the world. For the past several years, he’s done exactly that, having been a mercenary with the Band of the Mauler, a guard for the Aspis Consortium, a freelance bounty hunter, and hired muscle for a dozen different employers in as many lands. Gone is his youthful naivete, replaced by scars and the resolve of a veteran warrior.
Although he possesses a keen wit, he finds the simplest, most direct approach is often the best, and has little patience for convoluted schemes or magical chicanery. While noble at heart, Valeros hides this beneath a jaded, sometimes crass demeanor, often claiming that there’s no better way to end a day’s adventuring than with “an evening of hard drinking and a night of soft company.”

Seoni
Female human sorcerer 1

Despite being a consummate adventurer, Seoni is something of an enigma to her compatriots. Quietly neutral on most matters, bound by codes and mandates that she rarely feels compelled to explain, the sorceress keeps her emotions tightly bottled. Extremely detail-oriented—a trait that has led Merisiel to often call her a “control freak”—Seoni is a careful and meticulous planner, a schemer who frequently
finds herself frustrated by the improvised plans of her more impulsive companions. Despite all of this, Seoni has stuck by her comrades through numerous tight spots, a fact that continues to amaze and
confuse Valeros, who often wonders loudly (although not altogether unappreciatively) about “the witch and her schemes.”

Kyra
female human cleric 1 (Sarenrae)

Kyra was one of the few survivors of a brutal raid on her hometown, and on the smoking ruins of her village she swore her life and sword arm to Sarenrae. Possessed of a fierce will, pride in her faith, and skill with the scimitar, Kyra has traveled far since her trial by fire. She lost her family and home that fateful day, yet where
another might be consumed by anger and a thirst for revenge, Kyra has found peace in the Dawnflower, and in the belief that, if she can prevent even one death at evil hands, her own losses will not have been in vain. While her faith runs deep, she does not see herself as an evangelist and saves her sermonizing for those with ears to hear her enlightenment—

Merisiel
female elf rogue 1

Merisiel’s life experiences have taught her to enjoy things to their fullest as they occur, since it’s impossible to tell when the good times might end. Just over a century old—still an adolscent as her people count age— she’s already grown used to watching her friends grow old. She’s open and expressive with her thoughts and emotions, and never hesitates to make them known when things go wrong. Never the sharpest knife in the drawer, Merisiel makes up for this by carrying at least a dozen of them on her person. She hasn’t met a problem
yet that can’t, in one way or another, be solved with things that slice. While she’s always on the move and working on her latest batch of plots for easy money, in the end it comes down to being faster than everyone else—either on her feet, or with her beloved blades. She wouldn’t have it any other way.

Harsk
Male Dwarf Ranger 1

Harsk is, in many ways, not your standard dwarf. He prefers the wide skies of the open plains, disdains the taste of alcohol, and prefers to handle his battles at range rather than in melee. Yet few dare to mock him for his choices, for if there’s anywhere that Harsk is dwarven, it is in his gruff and ofputting attitude.
Much of his anger stems from the death of his brother’s warband. Slain to a man by giants, Harsk came upon the slaughter moments too late to save his brother. Harsk’s hatred of giants has fueled him and
shapes his life. He prefers strong tea over alcohol (to keep his senses sharp), the wildlands of the surface world (where giants can be found), and the crossbow over the axe (which allows him to start fights faster).
His companions value his skill at combat even if they’re somewhat afraid of him.

Ezren
Male Human Wizard 1

Born to a successful spice merchant in one of Absalom’s more affluent districts, Ezren’s childhood was pleasantly safe. This changed when his father was charged with heresy by the church of Abadar. Ezren
spent much of his adult life working to repair his father’s ruined reputation, and when he discovered proof of his father’s guilt and realized he’d wasted his life on a lie, he abandoned his family and set
out into the world to find his own way. Lacking the spry limbs of youth, Ezren fell naturally into the ways of wizardry, swiftly becoming a gifted self-taught spellcaster. While he often argues on the value of religion with Kyra, and his atrophied sense of humor often makes him the butt of Merisiels jokes, his world experience and keen wit are quite valued by his younger traveling companions.

Seelah
Female Human Paladin 1

Seelah’s parents were slain by gnoll raiders within months of their settling in Solku. When a group of Iomedae’s knights arrived to help defend the town, Seelah was taken with their beautiful, shining armor.
She stole a helm from one of the paladins, but became overwhelmed with guilt. Worse, before she had a chance to return the helm, the paladin was herself slain during the Battle of Red Hail. Wracked with guilt,
Seelah confessed her guilt to the paladins and vowed her life to their cause. Over the years, her guilt hastransformed into a powerful faith and conviction. Her powerful voice and charismatic charm often cast
her as the leader of her group of companions. She values Ezren’s wisdom and Harsk’s conviction.

These are just the default backgrounds. Feel free to change things.

Hi, this sounds like something that would be right up my alley. I've been playing D&D (and many others) since the early 1980's, and I'm just now exploring the rules of Pathfinder for the first time. A relaxed pbp sounds like just the ticket for me to learn the ropes, as it were.

Of the various iconics offered, I think I'd really like to try my hand at Harsk, the dwarf ranger. Truthfully, if left to me own devices, I'd very likely create a dwarf anyway, so I may as well take the quick and easy route. What do you say?

Hi Prodigal. Be glad to have you. Please feel free to use the pre rolled (stats below) or create your own if you like.

What I have seen and experienced on these pages is that sometimes the rules can get in the way of the story and the combat gets bogged down and goes on for a long time. Round a table that can mean anything from a few minutes to an hour or so. On a PBP it can mean days if not weeks! So i mean to try and speed things up if i can and not bother so much with things like facing, range etc and just get down to the basics of describing the ebb and flow of combat (if i can, assisted by the die rools of the players.

I've actually been wanting to play Rise of the Runelords since I started running Godsmouth Heresy, so here's a basic concept.

Gnome cleric of Nethys
alignment N/NG (final would depend on detailed writeup)
A very curious gnome that has a tendency to both get into trouble and, unusually, out of it relatively unscathed, he has recently chosen to dedicate his life to the god of magic and knowledge, as it gives him access to lots of cool toys and information, and the sheer breadth of what he can work with and discover while in Nethys's service should keep the blight at bay for a good long time.

Dark Archive

If I may, I'd be interested in taking on the part of Valeros, human male fighter. I've been trying to get into a pbp game for a few weeks now with no luck.

I'd be interested in getting in on this. I read Paizo stuff voraciously, but rarely get to play. So you know ahead of time, I'm familiar with RotRl, but can play dumb if it's cool with you.

Would really really love to play a magus, though I know you want to stick with core classes. So unless anyone else wants to play the rogue I'll run Merisiel.

Hey, Lord Thorin! Sorry about the other thing falling through, I think playing rather than DMing for now will suit my schedule better. Hopefully, this is your big chance. :)

I'll probably just use those stats to save time.

I'm cool with rolling without a battle map, I'm sure we can work out the details as we proceed. The fun's the thing!

We need one more, an arcane caster.

Hi Sunshadow. Good to have you. The Gnome cleric seems fine to me. Go with it. A priest of the God of Magic may be useful...

Stat generation will be 4d6 per stat. Pick best 3.

HP - Start with max for 1st level.

Starting wealth - Roll as standard.

My view is that were all adults. I trust my players to be true with there rolls...always have.

So far we have Fighter, Cleric, Ranger and Rogue.

Just need a magic user now...

Cool, I'm excited about this! :)

np prodigal. I was super excited to play in your game but I know how time consuming it can be to run something like this. I'd probably be already involved in a pbp game if I hadn't put all my eggs in one basket hoping to get into your game. but I didn't want to take the chance on getting accepted into multiple games and finding that I didn't have the time to devote to more than one.

that works for me! I'm excited to play. first time using pathfinder rules. Still waiting on all my rulebooks to get here from amazon but I have the core guide on pdf already. Any idea when this campaign is going to begin?

I'm ready to go as soon as our GM gives the word!

Whilst we are awaiting an arcane caster, i'll fill in the background.

You all meet on the road leading to the small coastal town of Sandpoint.

The PCs are in attendance, for whatever reason, at the Swallowtail Festival on the first day of autumn in Sandpoint. A cleric PC might be asked by a superior to travel to Sandpoint to witness the ceremony. A bard might be drawn bythe opportunity to perform before a new crowd. A rogue might be tempted by the promise of networking with new contacts. A fighter might be hired to escort a merchant to town. And, of course, if thePC is local, he needs no reason apart from the fact that everyone in town will be there!

A simple, relatively peaceful town with all the color
and common oddities one expects from a tightly-knit community,
Sandpoint sits at a point on the Lost Coast halfway
between Magnimar and Windsong Abbey.
Wood buildings and cluttered docks line the town’s natural harbor, while farms and the manors of wealthy citizens dot the surrounding countryside.

During the day, fishing, farming, lumbering, glassmaking,
and shipbuilding occupy most of the townsfolk, who commonly retire to their homes by way of Sandpoint’s many taverns. A playhouse and would-be museum make unusual attractions in such a small community, but Sandpoint’s true landmark is the Old Light, a lighthouse of ancient origins that lies in ruins.

A relatively peaceful town, devoid of many of the dangers of a
true frontier town and intrigues of a sprawling city, Sandpoint has
nonetheless had its share of troubles. The fading scars of a recent
terror still linger, a time most folk refer to as the Late Unpleasantness.

Just over five years ago, a madman stalked the streets of
Sandpoint, killing dozens. Known as Chopper, the killer’s monthlong
terror ended bloodily when an eccentric local artisan was
revealed as the murderer and killed during his attempted capture.
Adding to the pain, less than a month later the local chapel burned
to the ground in a conflagration that nearly consumed the town’s
northern half and left the local priest dead.

Emerging from the shadow of these events, though,
Sandpoint has healed and rebuilt, with many townsfolk
viewing the coming dedication of a new church as a
symbolic end to the healing and return to normality.

Kendra Deverin has served as Sandpoint’s mayor for the past eight years. Lawmaker, judge, and general peacemaker, Deverin has proven to be both an adept diplomat and stern hand when need be—skills likely
honed during her youth in Magnimar and adventuring in the region. With a personal—some say sisterly— style of governing, Kendra holds the abiding respect of most of Sandpoint’s people, charming them with her fiery temper and tenacity for justice (as demonstrated during the Late Unpleasantness).

A council of several of the town’s most respected and affluent landowners aids Deverin’s work. While several councilmembers have their
own agendas and visions for the town, the mayor’s no-nonsense attitude assures that council decisions ever work toward the common good.

Meting out the town’s good justice, sheriff and councilmember Belor Hemlock keeps watch over Sandpoint’s people. Held as something of
a local hero, Hemlock is lauded with being the man who brought the serial killer, Chopper, to justice. Although rarely faced with misconduct more severe than vandalism and public drunkenness, the sheriff is both a keen wit and a skilled swordsman, and openly proves both when the rare crime requires it. While the town’s chief
enforcer, Hemlock knows the difference between the word of the law
and its intent, and often gives those under his protection the benefit of the doubt.

Their sheriff’s work aside, Sandpoint’s people realize they must often fend for and defend themselves, especially on the outlying farms. In the rarest and most extreme cases— and even then thoroughly discouraged—mob justice is sometimes all that satisfies the outraged people.

The Land
A rolling, lightly forested land of limestone escarpments, rugged
tors, and verdant moors surrounds Sandpoint. Most who populate
the area live off the land and sea. Numerous farms spread over the
surrounding countryside, while the homes of fisherfolk dot the
coastal cliffs. Viable farming land is a coveted commodity around
Sandpoint, as rocky hills and expanses of limestone pavements—
uneven areas of flat rock—break the lush landscape.

Wolves, snakes, and oversized weasels primarily stalk the deer and hares common to the area, along with the occasional stray farm animal, making attacks on humanoids rare. When the fogs common to Sandpoint’s
stretch of shore rise, though, every dark shape in the mist becomes a monster, giving rise to numerous local legends of hungry wild men, winged terrors, and reeking things from the sea.

Hello AJ's Dad,

I have an idea for an abjuror, if you are still looking for an arcanist. She is inspired by Mattie Ross in True Grit.
I just need a little time to create her profile, using a point buy system to match the pregenerated charaters (15 points I think). Are you still looking? I can have her ready by the end of the day.

Hooray, a wizard!

Hi NitNat.

The new cathedral will venerate 6 deities in total. Erastil, Abadar, Shelyn, Gozreh, Sarenrae and Desna. The local priest is a pleasant man named Abstalar Zantus who is himself a worshiper of Desna. Abstalar is very open about matters of faith and has slipped into the role of adviser for worshipers of other gods of Sandpoint with ease.

Valerius was born and raised in Korvosa and dedicated his life early on to the church of Saranrae. There he was trained as a Warrior of the Sun, a Paladin dedicated to the teachings of the Dawnflower. His cause is redemption in the name of the Healing Flame, either through sincere repentance or by the blade. He has recently found himself in the town of Sandpoint, assisting with the dedication of the shrine to Sarenrae as the local church opens once more. May the Everlight guide him and show him the way, Saranrae knows these people need healing after what they have been through...

Edit: Oh, and if NitNat doesn't end up playing I have no problem switching to Ezren to fill the arcane role.

Only for those who can't read ;)

Seriously though, good call... I could easily change the name.

Stats look fine to me. But I would agree that the name may ger a bit confusing, especially for me. I have trouble remembering my own sometimes!

Anyway, once everyone posts that they are ready, I will look to get things rolling.

Hello Everyone,

I generated a wizard using a 15 point buy. Then I noticed that AJ's Dad requested rolls. AJ. Do I need to reroll?

I also mentioned that I wanted to create a character inspired by Mattie in True Grit.

I have come to realize that in order to make a character like Mattie I would be better off playing a bard or a rogue.....but I promised you an abjuror. So I created Miss Mattie instead. She shares the doggedness and petulance of the movie character - but without anywhere near the wonderful charm of Haillee Stanfield's Mattie. lol.

Working on a background now.

Mattie,

If you would rather create the character closer to your original inspiration (i.e. as a bard or a rogue) I have no problem playing Ezren instead of the Paladin.

Edit: Oh, and as to the name confusion. If I do indeed play the Paladin you may call him Alsandair Uhlric. The son of an Ulfen sailor and a Varissian... entertainer.

I'm going to play Harsk as perpetually grumpy, but don't let that put you off. He's a good enough sort, underneath. :)

She shares the doggedness and petulance of the movie character - but without anywhere near the wonderful charm of Haillee Stanfield's Mattie. lol.

Working on a background now.

The point buy is fine. Im also finef you want to go with your original idea and have Temp play Ezren.

Thanks for offering Tempestorm. I do think I will be more fun if Mattie is a rogue or bard. As an abjuror she would have been a dour companion...maybe fun for a few laughs...but I like playing more charismatic players. Bard or Rogue- Either way she'll make a great companion to the wizard.

If its still OK with you can you play Ezren?

As for the backstory. I am still working on it. She came all the way to Sandpoint from her far away home in ....(Andoran maybe?). She's hunting down the cold-blooded coward who killed her old Pa.

No problem at all, just call me Ezren. ;)

Ok. I have created the character. She is a halfling and hails from Magnimar, where her father was an authority in the teamster's guild (perhaps with connections to the Thieves Guild). He was murdered in in cold blood and his body dumped in the gutter by the stables. The killer ran free, and Mattie is on the hunt for justice. Check the profile for the latest. Much of her profile is ready. I'll spend the next while checking for errors and writing the backstory. I hope you like her.

BACKGROUND:

As a young child Mattie lived among the saddlemakers and stables of Magnimar. Her Pa was the chief farrier for the local teamsters guild and a halfling of consequence in the city. Great men trusted their animals to him. But a guild must aways choose its alliances carefully and tread carefully among the powers, and Mattie scarcely new the full business her Dad was in.

Mattie had been one of a large brood of rascals who lived about the stables. They came and went as they pleased....and snuck about as only halfling children can do. Sometimes they would get a tanning for the troubles they caused, but Pa was respected and Mattie usually escaped the worst of the trouble. Then one day Pa was murdered by a no good thug named [DM's choice]. The coward snapped Pa`s neck and trampled him underhoof in the dung of the corral afore takin`off to the North.

Mattie called on those comrades in the guild who had always supported her Pa in the past. But she quickly saw the fear in their eyes. They wanted nuthin`to do with the man who took her Daddy`s life. But she did manage to find out where the locals reckon he was headed.

Mattie realized that she must take justice into her own hands. She raided the guild stores for victuals and a hatchet - and she rustled up a young pony too...the prettiest one in the stable. In the dark of the earliest hours in the morning she took to the saddle and rode like the wind northward. Her destination: Sandpoint.

AJ's Dad, I noticed that the default stats you provided for Harsk were actually 3.5 D&D stats. Since we are using Pathfinder rules for the game, I went ahead and updated Harsk to use the Pathfinder stats (I found him as a pregen character in the first Kingmaker book). Hopefully, this is okay. There isn't much difference in terms of his ability, it mostly just cleaned up the old skills, added CMB/CMD, that sort of thing.

well spotted. I forgot that ROTR was pre Pathfinder RPG. Good work.

Since some players are familiar with the adventure and others maybe not, what I will do is give a quick rundown of the key points that a visitor to Sandpoint may know of. This will be ove on the PBP discussion board under 'AJS ROTRL chat thread'. Once everyone is ready, please post a quick OK on there and we will begin.

I can't seem to find the thread. Is it there now, or still pending?
