Our Mysterious Benefactor |
In a flurry of arrows and steel, the snake man goes down! But as his limp body falls, there is a soft POP and he disappears, leaving you in the pit of coins. For those in the pit, you can make out handholds carved into the stone. What are Soran and Mikail and Zolarus doing to get across the pit? There's a rope, but I need a climb check from everyone to use it!
Ferabras |
Fera roots around a bit in the pit of coins, wondering what could have happened to their opponent. "Was he an illusion all along?" he wonders aloud to Hoshiko.
Before climbing up the other side, he taps himself with his healing wand, aware that more surprises may await them. Using the handholds, he clambers out of the pit.

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
DM - did Fera's detect evil from round 2 tell him anything about the snake-man?
Assuming the DC is 5, I'll take 10 for a 10 on my Climb check.
Also, are there handholds on both sides of the pit? Could everyone just climb down and then back up?
Status: 46/46 hp
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
He was definitely evil. And a little scaly.
Ferabras calls up that there's handholds on both sides, and taking your time, you crawl down and then up the other side, where a door waits open a crack.
This large room has high, arched ceilings and a floor made of simple white tiles. Four statues frame the room, two of them recessed in wide alcoves along the south wall and two more standing against the north wall. The statues in the southern alcoves are carved from granite polished as smooth as glass. Both statues depict the same man, tall and regal with a full head of windblown hair. They are both completely nude, and each statue has one hand crossed behind its back while the other hand points toward its twin. When viewed from the front, the statues look like a mirror image of the same person. The two statues against the north wall are sculpted from lightly veined marble and depict two different women, nude to the waist and draped with robes from the waist down. The one to the east scowls and points accusingly at a plain wooden door in the north wall. The one to the west smiles and regards the door with a curious expression.
Ferabras |
"I have definitely learned not to trust anything that's standing still in this place," Fera remarks. "Sooner or later, it starts moving and trying to kill us. Do you guys see anything that would make this different?"
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Some Detect Magic and better Perception than Fera brings to the table would probably be good here, gang.
Soran Fletcher |
This place just gets stranger and stranger. Not as bad as that Thornkeep place though.
The youth looks around, trying to figure out this newest puzzle.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Mikail the Nimble |
Mikail follows Soran and Fera into the new room, peering around with wide eyes. His bow twitches back and forth between the two statues in a jerky motion that speaks volumes about the little kitsunes state of nerves right now. He is hardly able to concentrate on anything after the last few days of toil..
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
"Well, what do you suppose we do now?" Mikail asks the room.
Don't say go past the statues.. don't say go past the statues.. don't say..

Despite their best efforts, they see nothing out of the ordinary.

Zolarus |
Zolarus climbs the rope across the pit. Then he moves into the room and casts Guidance on Ferabras.
Take 10 for Climb DC 15. Bless is still active. Misfortune on 11+ base rolls.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Zolarus blesses the party, which Mikail and Hoshiko attack! Hoshiko's deep cut nearly cuts the crossbow in half and draws a lot of blood from the Razmrian, but Mikail slips on a loose coin and misses the man by inches with his arrow. Soran delays!
The Razmiran facing Hoshiko drops his crossbow and draws his rapier! Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 damage!
The other one recranks his crossbow and fires again at Mikail!

Ferabras |
"Well, at least this place doesn't disappoint," Fera mutters. A powerful surge of holy goodness fills hims as he steps forward and slashes and bites at the finely-robed Razmiran!

Hit a dragon? No problem! Attack a dude in robes? Nah, that's too hard. I don't think I've hit a Razmiran inside the city yet!
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Ferabras' greatsword cannot find it mark, but his teeth do! Soran fires, but there's too many bodies wrestling in the fray and he misses rather than injure his friend!
"Iramine will claim the Gem! Then Razmir's glory will see us all made saints even if we fall!" The finely robed man cries.

Kill your leader!
Ferabras, you forgot Guidance last round. Perhaps you can use it next round.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Hoshiko cuts the Razmiran thug deeply, while Mikail attacks the other thug, stabbing him in the side! Zolarus commands one of the lackeys! Will: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17 But fear of Razmir seems to stay the lackey's hand!

Ferabras |
Yay for Misfortune! Thanks, Zolarus, and thanks for the reminder on Guidance.
Ferabras sees the Razmiran's blade coming straight for his throat, but somehow the attacker's grip shifts and the blade goes wide! "You won't get a second chance at that," the tiefling says fiercely before going on the counterattack!

Hoshiko Masaru Kodo |
"Based on the building and platform this appears to be the last room in this area." she tells the others. Hoshiko then signals that she is ready to proceed.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Mikail opens the door and slips inside!
This chamber has high, vaulted ceilings, a simple stone floor, and unadorned granite walls. A large, 15-foot-square raised dais occupies the center of the room. In the middle of the dais rests a gray stone block with a grasping hand carved from the same stone rising from the center of the block. The hand is currently empty. The room is almost unbearably hot and entering is much like walking into a furnace.
Standing next to the Hand is a beautiful elven woman, clothed in white robes and holding a mask of Razmir that is far nicer than any you've seen before. Hanging from her belt are two items that immediately catch your attention: a great glowing gem and an amulet that looks to be pieced together from three pieces.
"You finally catch up to me. My dear dead companion Kassen must have sent you a long way to retrieve his piece of the amulet. When we first arrived here, Kassen, Asar and I, we swore to break the key and never allow it to be rejoined, but our minds were small and our vision clouded. We saw only the City's potential for evil, but Razmir opened my eyes: imagine what glory and goodness could be achieved if we used the wealth here to advance the Church? Imagine it! A risen church with a living God at its head! This wealth, conceived by evil, used for good! Your tiny morals and limited minds cannot imagine, I know, but TRY! Try to see what could be! Abandon this fool's errand and join me. Try to become something useful and wondrous, instead of this pitiable murder spree you're on. Try to rise above. I cannot offer you any more chances after this. If you oppose me, for the good of all you must die." She literally shines with self-righteousness as she makes her pitch, although you also notice that the Gem she carried pulses along with her every word. It may be that the Gem, created and conceived by the mind of Tar-Baphon, is corrupting her as you watch.
Ferabras |
"What you call 'good' is self-serving and venal," Fera replies, his eyes alight with a zeal almost as great as Iramine's. "Razmir serves his own selfish ends, as do his followers. That is no faith on which to guide this world."
"But we have no wish to kill you," he continues, his tone moderating somewhat in an effort to sway the woman. "Step away from there and let us talk. There is room for many faiths among the peoples of Golarion."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
DM - any way we can affect the gem, that seems to be controlling her? Any Knowledge checks that would apply?
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Knowledge Arcana might tell you more, but it definitely seems you'd have to possess it to stop it.
"You speak as one who is disillusioned, cynical. Does your god not uplift you? Mine does. Mine speaks directly to me, makes His wishes known, cares for me. Does yours, paladin? Have you heard the voice of your god, spoken to him? Touched him? I have. I know what I have seen. Razmir will make Golarion great again. His leadership will bring us back to the path of righteousness, build a wall against the evil and terror that mortals do. Mere words cannot express the glory of meeting your God, paladin. Join Razmir and He will show you his glory." She does not seem swayed by your words.
Hoshiko Masaru Kodo |
'she should die.. .she is a Razmiran fanatic... she is most likely evil... and she is prettier than me...' Hoshiko whispers to the others.
Soran Fletcher |
Is Razmir Donald Trump? "Make Golarion great again" "build a wall"... Lol
Soran says nothing to the woman, but keeps two arrows nocked. He whispers to Ferabras and Mikail without taking his eyes off of the elf.
Fera, is her heart evil? She may too influenced, too corrupted by this false god to be swayed. We should take the gem from her. Mikail, do you think you could get it away from her if we draw her attention?
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
You also notice it's hard to get a look directly at Iramine. She seems to blur around the edges...
Ferabras |
Good thinking, Soran, should have done that in my last post.
Hearing Soran's question, Ferabras searches Iramine's heart for evil. "You may be right, my friend," he says simply, "it may be too late for her."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Iramine herself doesn't radiate evil (no aura of evil, though she is Lawful Evil in alignment, which I'm pretty sure doesn't show up in a detect evil scan) but the Gem has an evil aura, though it seems to be deep inside the Gem itself. Ie the Jewel of Everlasting Gold contains a shred of Tar-Baphon's malign will, which can corrupt its bearer.
Ferabras |
Why would her being evil not show up in a detect evil scan? Per the spell description, which the paladin ability uses, a level 5-10 cleric of an evil god would show up with a strong aura of evil. Even if she doesn't fit that description exactly, being evil would show up. Did I misunderstand you?
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
It's not enough to just be evil. You have to have an evil aura, which a cleric would have as a class ability, or be an evilly aligned outsider. But she's not exactly a cleric... Detect evil is a strange ability/spell.

Actually, re-reading the spell, she would show up as Faint evil.
Mikail the Nimble |
Mikail turns invisible as he slides through the door after Ferabras. He creeps closer to the woman, rapier in hand, waiting for his friends to decide that enough is enough..
Ferabras |
"She is evil, but not deeply so," Fera tells his companions. "Perhaps she can still be redeemed - but it may not be a gentle lesson for her."
Unless someone's got a better idea of how to sway her, Fera is thinking we give her a few non-lethal whacks to get this party started. Thoughts?
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Iramine sighs. "I can see that you may yet be redeemed, but I will leave it to Razmir to show mercy. I am on a timetable, you see. I have to be gone before the golden showers, I mean golden flood begins. I have to putin an appearance at my Master's side. Goodbye, heretics. May Razmir have mercy on your souls!"

LOL! Awesome post, DM!
Fera shakes his head in profound regret as he sees the fool before him actually believes the things she says. "You do not need to dance to that master's tune," he says, though he has little hope of altering his foe's thinking, "you could work for the good of the people instead. Your master is somehow altering the messages you receive I fear, interfering with the outcomes of events that are vital to this world! I wish it were not necessary, but we must put you down - and we might even enjoy it a little."
He steps forward, rallying his companions to put an end to Iramine's delusion and restore some order to the world!
