I think jack needs to order a dialing wand after he mashed his keyboard writing that last post. I mean, I know about far out there autocorrect, but that post was almost poetry.

On tab 2, I have added some extra stuff that should be helpful for me running this. If you wouldn't mind filling out some of your more common skill checks, I will be able to more easily have them rolled for you when they are needed, keeping the game going... and you'll be able to reference them as well!

'Ey, Filk, you got the best chance against these:
Even the weakest kinetic blast involves a sizable mass of elemental matter or energy, so kinetic blasts always deal full damage to swarms of any size (though only area blasts deal extra damage to swarms).

Sorry to bring up the "AC delay vs defend" debate again, but I found this, the relevant part being "If the animal acts first, it can simply delay until it receives orders." I'm not aware of any later official clarifications on the issue, so I think Mark's ruling still stands.

![]() |

I very much agree that a trained animal does only what it's told to do, and I agree Khoun cannot issue commands before it's his turn to act. What I don't agree on is that the animal automatically defends. If no command has been given, I'd argue that "delay" (i.e. no action) makes more sense than using a trick it hasn't been commanded to use.
Here's the dealio. If you do not issue a command for it to follow you, it will literally sit there licking its nuts as you walk off. So that's the heart of the question - what command do you issue to have it follow? There's the explicit command "heel", where it will follow but defend only itself. Most players pick "defend" because it does roughly the same as heel, but the AC gets to act if you get attacked at least.
So that's the big question - what command would you have issued to have it follow in the first place?
For the record, Valkea does have the defend trick (and most of the other "basic" tricks) and I agree that it makes sense for most ACs in PFS to have that trick; I just wanted to point out that ACs aren't required to have that trick, so saying that it's in the rules that an animal uses the defend trick in a particular situation is based on an assumption that isn't always true.
There are some essential tricks that most savvy AC GMs will be looking for. Defend is one, heel is another, and the big one that's often forgot is flee or stay (not guard, big difference). I'll as a player sometimes forgo attack just to ensure that I have control over my companions - and I would (and I'm not the GM here) expect my players to do the same.
But we can most definitely agree to disagree and go with the GM's ruling. :-)
That we can.

Filk "Roach" Besed |

Locally, we've always played that AC delays until it's master gets to act. Don't know if it was correct, but it felt sensible.

![]() |

Unfortunately, the PFS leadership essentially invalidated all non-developer posts in lieu of the Campaign Clarifications system. Mark's opinion is just that, his opinion.
And I still would argue that he's not considering that the companion likely already has some kind of command.
As for the delay until master get's act, that was clarified in Mike Brock's old Blog Post on ACs where he called out that they have their own initiative.

![]() |

So that's the big question - what command would you have issued to have it follow in the first place?
If we assume that delaying isn't possible, I think Khoun's last command before opening the door would have been "attack" because we were expecting a fight, not a stroll in the park. As mentioned in the gameplay thread, the attack command doesn't require the master to specify a particular target; the animal can attack any "apparent enemies".
As soon as the door opens and a guy is aiming a crossbow at Khoun, it's pretty apparent who the enemy is.
Anyway, I guess this is one of those "expect table variation" things. I'll be using Mark's ruling whenever I'm the GM, but I'll respect your interpretation of the rules when I'm playing at your table.

GM.Silbeg |

I will be doing a wrap up in a bit, probably Monday to be honest. I will be getting your chronicles ready, so will need the following.
PFS #:
Normal or Slow tracking:
Day Job (if any):
Faction:
Please also list any purchases you are making.
Assume 1436gp and 4pp

![]() |

Thanks Jack, and everyone else!
Here are Khoun's details for the chronicle sheet:
44382-8
Normal XP tracking
No day job
Liberty's Edge
Khoun will purchase a wand of cure light wounds for 2 PP, but other than that, I'll probably wait until I play another scenario with Khoun and make the purchases at the start of the next scenario.
Speaking of which, I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop out from this PbP; I'm swamped with work right now, so I'll have to reduce the number of things to keep track of.
I'm going to PaizoCon, by the way, and I hope I'll see you guys there! I'm currently working on a number of very interesting Paizo projects (including something for PFS), and I hope they'll announce most or all of these projects at PaizoCon. :-)

GM.Silbeg |

Mikko, I am sorry to hear that you will be dropping out. Hope to see you at Paizo Con, but the game here won't be the same without you.

GM.Silbeg |

The character in the game would be most appropriate.

![]() |

If you're okay with it, since this will be for a PFS character (even though we're not playing a PFS game), I'd like to use my level 1 rebuild before next session. Don't worry, it's just a slight modification on the character to fit the theme I'd rather be going for. No change to background.
PFS #: 1870
Normal or Slow tracking: Normal for this puppy
Day Job (if any): No day job.
Faction: Dark Archive
Please also list any purchases you are making.
Assume 1436gp and 4pp
Will do as soon as I can get to it. Not sure what I want yet.

![]() |

@Mikko I am saddened, but understand your leave. Good luck!

Filk "Roach" Besed |

The character in the game would be most appropriate.
Alrighty, I wasn't sure what "campaign mode" meant exactly...
So that chronicle will be used for Filk in this game? Purchases etc.?
Here's the details, anyway:
PFS#: 96960-14
Normal or Slow tracking: Normal
Day Job (if any): Nope
Faction: Liberty's edge
I'll have to think a moment what I'll be buying. Can we spend 2PP for wands as normal in PFS?

GM.Silbeg |

Yes, go ahead and use your PP as normal.
Though, you may want to wait on the wand purchases until you see the chronicle boons.

![]() |

Player: AJ Torgerud
Character: FiJeet Quar'z Talespinner Nackl
PFS #: 59286-19
Faction: Dark Archive
Track: normal
day job Perform Percussion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Purchase Darkwood Composite Shortbow +1 str 470gp
Darkwood Buckler 203gp

![]() |

Anybody have any wand suggestions using the witch list as a base?
Would you prefer I buy a CLW wand, or would you prefer I buy something with some bang for the buck?

GM.Silbeg |

Waiting Atrix and Mortin's info. I'll be filling out tomorrow, and if they get them to me, you'll have 'em tomorrow night.
We'll start part 2 on Monday

![]() |

Still have to get you my buy list. Not really in the mood to work on it.

![]() |

PFS #: 124235-24
Normal or Slow tracking:Normal
Day Job (if any): None
Faction: Exchange
Lots of purchases, I'll document over lunch.
At minimum: 100gp worth of fine jewelry or clothing, which I'd be happy to roleplay finding in town, since it might be... limited selection.

![]() |

Here's my buy list:
Masterwork Obsidian Spiked Gauntlet (302.5 gp)
Masterwork Silken Ceremonial Armor (180 gp)
Alchemist's Fire x2 (80 gp)
Potion of Cure Light Wounds x2 (100 gp)
Oil of Grease (50 gp)
Oil of Protection from Evil (50 gp)
Oil of Air Bubble (50 gp)
Potion of Touch of the Sea (50 gp)
Antiplague (50 gp)
Antitoxin (50 gp)
Vermin Repellent x2 (10 gp)
The following scrolls to "scribe":
Bungle (35 gp)
Burning Hands (35 gp)
Chill Touch (35 gp)
Touch of Blindness(35 gp)

GM.Silbeg |

You know that you don't need to buy scrolls to scribe? You just need to pay 1.5X the cost to scribe, so 1st level spells are only 15gp to copy and scribe.

![]() |

Well that's cool. I've been doing that wrong forever.

GM.Silbeg |

It was in discussions from Mike Brock, but has made it into either the campaign clarifications of FAQ recently.

Filk "Roach" Besed |

Sorry, this week was busier than I thought...
So we got all the boons in the chronicle?
I'll do the level-up today.

GM.Silbeg |

Ok, what with Paizo Con being around the corner, and a vacation prior where I'll not be bringing a laptop, let's just start up on May 31, when I am back at home. Then, we can keep going consistently.
Sorry about the delays... I will endeavor to keep things going more smoothly from now on.

Filk "Roach" Besed |

Happy midsummer!
I'll be celebrating the nightless night with family, so unfortunately I have little time for posting...

GM.Silbeg |

FYI - we'll be taking a break from starting Tuesday the 15th, back on Tuesday the 22nd, for Gen Con.

GM.Silbeg |

I will be there, and I am looking forward to running it. Some neat things in there, for sure.
AJ will also be going, and runwning.

![]() |

Preemptive head's up. I will be out of town Friday through Tuesday this next week. I may post Tuesday night, but due to me being "camping" in a "real tent" I do not expect much in the way of my ability to post a damn thing.

![]() |

Hey guys, how are you doing? Just wanted to drop by to say hi and and thank you--discussions with Jack, Jon, and Ryan at PaizoCon gave me some cool ideas for Assault on Absalom, which debuts at Gen Con next week. How many of you will be attending (and playing/running the special)?
What you didn't state was whether you would be at the big show?

![]() |

No, not this time, unfortunately. Can't do more than one American convention per year.
I hope you had a good time and returned home safely! If you and AJ have the time when you're back home, I would like to hear how you guys (and your tables) liked the special, so email or pm me if you have feedback on it.

Mikko, I plan to send you a more detailed email later... but I have to agree with AJ. At worst, it is a Top 2 special!
Prep was more manageable than any I've seen, and even the mini pull wasn't bad! The story was good... loved the faction missions!
only comment will be spoilered...
Unfortunately, I don't think too many folks went for the ships mission. My table didn't because few, if any, of them had the ability to ride effectively (in their eyes), nor did many have good swim checks.
So, I think this encounter set ended up being wasted, unfortunately. Even though I thought it would have been a lot of fun! Almost got them to bite on riding hippocampi, but not quite.

![]() |

Thanks, guys! I'm very glad to hear it was well received, especially because it was more challenging to write (5 subtiers, timing, etc.) than any normal scenario.
Regarding the spoilered comment, I think many of my PFS characters, too, would have chosen the other set of encounters because they don't happen to have the right skills. I guess John and I should have chosen a less hazardous sounding method of transportation.
