Welcome everyone - I've announced the group but have not done a final check on the stat blocks etc. Could you please get your alias set up with the up to date stat block - I get back from vacation on Sunday and will try to go through and run final checks Sunday/Monday.
In terms of kicking off, I will write a set up and post when I kick off the Gameplay thread. In the interim if you want to calibrate back stories with one another please feel free to do so.
The general idea is that the various "mentors", where relevant (i.e. for the 6 party members), will each nominate a member of the party as part of the celebration that kicks off the quest. The rogue candidate will be nominated by the Woodcutters' Guild. The assumption is that the "winning" candidates found out the night before the celebration. You may have known one other beforehand, as inhabitants of Kassen, but will have had little chance to discuss the quest, and by and large you won't have known who the other nominees would be (the exceptions being the ranger and rogue nominees, who were originally vying for the same slot).
The story will pick up after the celebration as you, as a group, set off on the quest.

Sod off the lot of you. Stay behind ma shield and blood-ember and you should be ok. Ya get too crazy and end up losing battle-sweat tis not ma' fault. I don't like slackers and weaklings, only feeder of ravens. Leave Golfond alone and we should get along just fine...

"You have a rather high opinion of yourself, you've never been that far from the village either!" I protest, sticking out my tongue as you try to act like a tough guy
Harken the Resister |
Of course i Have a high opinion of myself. Who doesn't? Silly comment that is for a nature priest. I mean if one didnt have a high opinion of themselves then they would have a low opinion of themselves...right? Do you have a low opinion of yourself?
I've seen you around Tycho. Tracker are ya? Any good at it?
And who is this lovely flower? You could be my maiden of the hearth if ya wanted to. You got elven blood in ya I see- exotic.
Although I must say, keep your belt pouch close when this fellow Bardan is around. Folks say he has light fingers.
Alrighty then who is buying the next round? this is a party isnt it. liven up folks.
Death_Keeper |
Dropping out of character for a moment, I hate the replies that are made to five different people simultaneously, It makes the situation much less natural/realistic because either you stopped to talk to five people at once, or you just spouted a paragraph of schizophrenic conversation without waiting for replies. (personal preference, but there it is.)
Harken the Resister |
Looking at the druid Harken says "Of course i Have a high opinion of myself. Who doesn't? Silly comment that is for a nature priest. I mean if one didnt have a high opinion of themselves then they would have a low opinion of themselves...right? Do you have a low opinion of yourself?" as if a challenge.
Turning to others in the area the burly warrior says to woodsman dressed figure "I've seen you around Tycho. Tracker are ya? Any good at it?" and then the bearded man downs some mead until a comely figure walks by and sits near the group during the festival.
"And who is this lovely flower? You could be my maiden of the hearth if ya wanted to. You got elven blood in ya I see- exotic." he casually mentions in her direction.
Noticing a sullen figure eyeing others Harken says to those in earshot "Although I must say, keep your belt pouch close when this fellow Bardan is around. Folks say he has light fingers." as if judging the man before meeting him properly.
Finishing off his tankard the large man says "Alrighty then who is buying the next round? this is a party isnt it. liven up folks."

Hmm, thanks. As I said, I'll open it up in a couple of days. I still need to run through the stat blocks on Hero Lab and I don't have the computer in question with me now.
However and in the interim, looking through the set up, at the send off you'll be given the following:
To each character: a backpack containing 5 days’ worth of rations, a small tent, a winter blanket and a full waterskin.
In addition, the following items are spread out among the PCs’ backpacks, distributed as evenly as possible: 50 feet of hempen rope, a box containing tinder and three tindertwigs, a labelled potion of cure light wounds, three torches, a grappling hook, and a small bottle of local brandy.
So, please add the first set of items to the equipment in your stat blocks. If you already paid for similar, you can remove the cost.
For the second set of items, I suggest deciding now who is going to get what. In game terms, this will actually happen at the start of the adventure - bear in mind before the opening ceremony you don't know who else is in the party. But my intention is to speed through the opening ceremony and get you into the game quickly.
You'll also get a Trail Map that leads from Kassen to the Crypt of the Everflame. I'll upload this when I get back to a decent connection (tomorrow night, hopefully).
Irgal Zeth |
Oh dear, I'll be overburdened in no time! Well, there's nothing to it, then. I might as well carry the rope and grappling hook for you. Just let me know when you need it.
Someone else can have the potions.
Harken the Resister |
he is of average intellect and wisdom, just rude and unfriendly.
Last i looked trees are good for fire wood, spear shafts, arrows, shields and longhouses. not much for conversation. HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!
Tycho Sandalwood |
Now, now, Harken, that's nearly 35 pounds of gear, or about 40% of your light/medium encumbrance line your own bad self, so you've little room to talk (especially considering that you're encumbered down to slow speed already).
I've made adjustments to my gear and funds for this free stuff and will update my character profile to reflect the changes shortly.
As for the group gear I can carry, what's left? I'm already carrying a silk rope and a grappling arrow, but I suppose I can take on the rope and the grappling hook if nobody's claimed them.
Irgal Zeth |
I've got the rope and hook right now, but I'm at medium encumbrance. I can drop back down to light if someone else takes the rope and hook, and I sell back my bedroll, relying on the tent and blanket.
Harken the Resister |
OK Harken will take the rope and grappling hook. According to hero labs-
Combat Gear: alchemist's fire; Other Gear scale mail, heavy wooden shield, dagger, dwarven waraxe, shortspear, throwing axe, backpack, belt pouch, flint and steel, grappling hook, hemp rope (50 ft.), mess kit[UE], shield sconce[UE], trail rations (5), waterskin, winter blanket, 28 gp, 15 sp, 1 cp
this adjusts his load to 86, right at his limit. now since he will be in the front of the fight, if someone else wants to carry his alchy fire to throw when the time comes feel free to take it. he would ask the druid but it might be too taxing for him. he can buy another alchy fire if need be.
GM Shady |
On the subject of encumbrance: I generally allow dropping a backpack as a swift action.
My suggestion if you are using Hero Lab - it allows you to a) mark which items are in your backpack and b) drop your backpack. For the default stats we should assume backpack dropped; just be clear what's in and what isn't.
The trail map is up. Just got back home and will go through stats this evening. Still planning to kick off the gameplay thread on Tuesday evening.
Tycho Sandalwood |
Okay, both Illya and Harken have claimed the rope and grappling hook, with Irgal stating he handed it off to Illya about half an hour before Harken said he was taking it. Confusion ensues.
Anyway, somebody has them.
Bardan has the brandy and the box with the tinder twigs, along with one of the torches.
Ahlbay has the map.
That leaves, besides from the determination of who actually has the rope and the grappling hook, two torches and the single potion of cure light wounds.
I'll take the two torches.
I'm in agreement with Illya that whoever is likely to be on the front line should take the potion, so I imagine that's Harken, though Illya has an intriguingly melee ready build for a sorcerer. Not me, in any case, unless things go south.
Thanks, GM, for the map and for the clarification on backpacks.
Tycho Sandalwood |
And done. Tycho's profile is updated with his stat block (with those two torches added to his equipment, as well as the other items--tent, etc--mentioned upthread) and his background.
The stat block reflects that "backdrop dropped to ground" status we were discussing.
Illya-Nym |
Well yea, my build is sort of being designed as an eldritch knight type build, so eventually i will do melee. that's my general design for the character anyway
Harken the Resister |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
for the group-
Harken is an outsider in the town. He came from the cold north near Jol and was fostered to a family member on his mothers side, Guard Captain Gregor Wisslo. Harken, being a huscarl northerner, is often times at odds with the strict ways of GC Gregor. Harken preferred to be fostered to friends on his fathers side, a local dwarven clan, but his strong willed mother won out. Doing weapons training with Gregor is the only time they actually spend time together and when not training, Harken is often times found in the local tavern drinking mead and being boisterous. Gregor continues to chide Harken over his barbaric upbringing and wild nature. His one true friend is Golfond Kir, the simpleton town watch soldier who gets bullied and taunted, except when Harken is around. Harken has laid out a few numbskulls over their bullying of Golfond. The upcoming test is a chance for Harken to prove to Gregor he is a serious adult and test his manhood. Harken already has a full grown beard but feels he is still treated like a child.
Feel free to inject into his storyline as you see fit.

Hi - if you haven't heard from me, I'm going through the stat blocks one at a time and checking back with you if any issues/confusion. Have done 4 now (and need to respond to some responses), two to go (Harken/Illya).
Will try to get gameplay thread up tonight all being well.
Sorry - took me a bit longer than I expected ... should get game-play going (still on schedule) tomorrow.
GM Shady |
Hi everyone, I'm about to open the Gameplay thread as promised.
I wrote what turns out to be a fairly verbose introduction to the campaign. I hereby make a promise (both to yourselves and to me) that this won't be the normal case going forwards. I wanted to ensure that the threads prior to the start of the campaign are in place to get you up and running, plus it provided me with a distraction over new year while the family were enjoying siestas.
I've also just added a section on policy (on subjects such as when I expect to run die rolls, etc.) to the Campaign Info section. Let me know (feel free to PM me) if there's something with which you disagree, or which is unclear.
The campaign starts with the party in the town square, after the ceremony to kick off the quest has started and the crowd has dispersed. The stores are closed for the ceremony day and the route to the crypt runs along the road to the south, per the map.
Per the introduction, the party members may or may not know one another beforehand - they're generally known about town. With the exception, probably, of Illya.
Tycho Sandalwood |
Policy stuff is great, intro is fantastic! Sorry for the delay in first post I was under the weather last night and didn't see the game had started until this morning and now I'm off to work. I'll have a post up by 3:30 pm Eastern USA time today! Excellent stuff thus far!
GM Shady |
Thanks for the kind words.
I'm going to let you guys basically react to the ceremony and get to know one another today/tomorrow but at some point as a group (let's say by close of play tomorrow) you ought to be walking south. I suggest everyone take a look at the trail map also.
Also - there were some minor outstanding items on character sheets - just fix and let me know.
GM Shady |
I believe Harken is fixed based on our conversations. Please advise if not so.
Here's what's still outstanding:
- Harken - done
- Bardan - done
- Irgal - done
- Ahlbay - sent some v minor corrections last night, also would be good to know 0-level spells memorised
- Tycho - done
- Illya - need to know what skills you are choosing for Fey Thoughts
That's it.
GM Shady |
Had a PM from Tycho who had some issues posting - also we have not heard from Ahlbay. I'll let the sauntering/getting to know one another carry on into tomorrow and see where we are. Would like to push on ahead of weekend.
I'm travelling to Scandinavia (actually and in no particular order France/Denmark/Finland/Sweden - will say hello to Harken's Viking relatives) for much of next week but should be hopefully on-line at least once a day. I have PDFs of all relevant docs and will take printouts of the character sheets.
