"After the malign influence they have been around I can understand some would have a hard time readjusting." Not all hold the same standards of the Dawnbringers and some just can't. "Let's hope these success spur on our prisoners to have a change of heart as well." He looks to Sosiel and after a moment the rest as well. He was physically tired but his mind was sharp as a blade.

"Is there any changes in those we have captive? I have doubts that there are but tomorrow will be the deciding factor. When we take the Citadel."

"Most of the tieflings still aren't happy, but I've made it clear that punitive actions against them will not be accepted." Irabeth noted. "This is the Worldwound - the last thing we need is people giving into their darker desires." She clearly believed that well-maintained discipline among the Dawnbringers - not a rule of terror, just high standards and people watching over each other - was a critical part of the army's ability to survive in this twisted land.

"Indeed, as this land is quick to capitalize on weakness. Please continue with your efforts, we are going to rest and get ourselves back into fighting shape for the last push. By this time tomorrow the Citadel will be back in the hands of the Crusade. If there is nothing else to discuss then you are all dismissed to perform your duties once more. Thank you for your dedication." Rowan's voice carried authority but she didn't use it fully with the officers gathered here, they were those she trusted.

As much as she wanted to visit the Mausoleum as she knew her faith was lacking. Perhaps after the Citadel's fall she would be strong enough. Once the others had gone she looks to Julian, Jestak and Anathya. "Time to sort these out so that we are ready on the morning. Hopefully you sort out what you need to do as well Anathya." Rowan gives the other woman a faint smile, she was tired but happy to be alive and back in the Dawnbringer camp.

Anathya nods returning the smile. "Thank you Rowan, it means a lot." Looking at the equipment she takes note of the heavy crossbow.
"I would most likely benefit from the crossbow more than anything else."

That was definitely likely - although one definitely had to be smart about how crossbows were used against infernal creatures, who were often all but immune to mundane bolts and arrows. Still, mortals were nothing if not creative... and since the meeting looked like it was wrapping up (the others had left once dismissed), it was probably time to wrap up your own business as well.

Assuming the I've had a tour of the camp, wher would I be mot likely to find someone devoted to Ragathiel? Let me know if there's anything I should roll.

With her fellow officers dismissed Rowan had a few other things to be done around the camp. The Mauosoleum tug on her mind but her strength wasn't adequate enough. Not yet anyway. Seeing the look on Anathya';s face Rowan nods. "Of course." Plucking the crossbow from the goods they had amassed she hands it over to Anathya. She grabs another item as well and hands it to Jestak. It was one of the pearl's which was a valuable item for sure but to Rowan Jestak has considerably more value then a mere pearl. "Now that you are not on the spot so much Jestak. As you know Staunton is dead so he cannot pursue you now. As agreed what choice you make from here on is yours. We can use more strong warriors for our cause, every helping hand is needed to ensure a brighter tomorrow here in this wasteland. I cannot promise the road ahead will be easy but it will be worthwhile in the end." She gives the woman warrior a hopeful look. "Though if you choose to go then you will do so with our blessing and when the next caravan arrives I can see to it you are taken back to the border with ample means to avoid having to return here." She gives the strong woman a nod before looking between both of the newcomers and saying. "Now that you have met the officers of this encampment I can show you around so you get a feel for things and don't get lost."

Rowan spent the part of the evening showing them around the camp, where Meiyun and her forge were, the heart of the camp where the core force of the Dawnbringers were, along with the many wounded from the last push into the citadel, where the prisoners were being held and lastly where the Former prisoners were encamped for now. Along the way she explained their recent victories in the city and that the last real obstacle was the remaining forces that had to be dealt with in the citadels dungeon. "We're a motley bunch, but it is progress and in the right direction as well. Is there anything else you are interested in seeing?" Her earlier fatigue had faded, new faces were a welcome change and new allies as well. For Rowan this was one of the few rare pleasures she had, meeting new people and welcoming them seemed to brighten her soul. Much like Soltengrebbe's coming to their side left a very deep mark in her as well, one she wasn't going to forget anytime soon..

The best way to find someone would be to ask around. The majority of the Dawnbringers are devoted Paladins of Iomedae, but it's not like they're hostile to allied faiths, and just asking them can do a lot. XD Note that the army sees Anathya as more of a new ally right now, but not a leader chosen by their Queen. She may ask them for things, but is not in command of them.

"I'm good for now." Jestak mused. "Camp has pretty nice beds for an army on the march, too. The demons... the people who serve them, too... aren't much for caring about any comfort except their own." That detail seemed to have made a surprisingly deep impression on her, and she definitely looked like she was planning to stick around, rather than running back to the demons as some kind of informant.

Anathya D. Tracker Demonslayer /Cold Iron Warden (Inquisitor) 10 Religion:Ragathiel| HP:148/148 | AC: 22 T: 15 FF: 17 |F: +12 R: +13 W: +11 | Init:+10 (+12) Per: +11(+13) |CMB+10 CMD 25 | Effects: C; Resist acid 5 cold 5 electricity 5 |Senses:Darkvision 60

Anathya gratefully accepts the crossbow from Rowan. Much to her surprise she'd very quickly come to admire the commander of this force. The manner in which she made her decisions and the openness with which she embraced others was something quite foreign to her, and yet comforting in a way she couldn't describe.

She takes note of the tour of the camp, sure she'd at some point be making a visit to the blacksmith Meiyun, getting a hold of more cold iron bolts would be important. Meeting those in the camp, she greets them pleasantly, not the most used to interacting with others, but happy to see how many were drawn to the cause.

"I think I will ask around among the Dawnbringers. I seek a cleric of my faith. I feel there is something Ragathiel requires of me." she says to Rowan.

It took about thirty minutes of asking around, but eventually Anathya was able to track down a middle-aged Paladin who bore the iconography of her deity. He was surrounded by a number of books and papers, and didn't look at all surprised when he saw her show up. "Ah, I'd been wondering when you were going to get here." he said, taking his helmet off and setting it on the table. He tapped the holy symbol on his armor a moment later. "I had a feeling today was going to be interesting. Do you know why the General is demanding your attention?"

Anathya D. Tracker Demonslayer /Cold Iron Warden (Inquisitor) 10 Religion:Ragathiel| HP:148/148 | AC: 22 T: 15 FF: 17 |F: +12 R: +13 W: +11 | Init:+10 (+12) Per: +11(+13) |CMB+10 CMD 25 | Effects: C; Resist acid 5 cold 5 electricity 5 |Senses:Darkvision 60

"No I don't actually," Anathya responds, her hand unconsciously going to the warm, pulsing wing amulet around her neck."I know whatever it is it was..urgent enough that my ability to access spells has been interrupted." she continues.

"Indeed." the Paladin said, raising his eyes slightly. "As it so happens, these books here are records of some of the more notable figures acting in and around the Worldwound, yourself included, brought with us to help us stay informed." his tone made it clear that he didn't believe records of Anathya being among them was a coincidence. "Let's see... ah, here it is. They say you were born during the Second Crusade, your parents were lost in an attack, and you ultimately became a hunter with an excellent track record of exterminating demons. That's something I can respect." He set a small sheaf of papers down. "That said, I believe these are what concern Ragathiel, and why he's being so emphatic about getting your attention. What I have here are a number of reports filed over the years, detailing incidents where you have acted in a less than legal manner while pursuing demons. Individually, they aren't much... but together, my reading is that your desire for vengeance is pushing you to act, and you have not been as successful at controlling yourself as the General of Vengeance demands. Ragathiel also represents duty and chivalry, after all. Do you have an explanation for your behavior?" That was not a casual question - he was clearly inquiring as an ordained member of Ragathiel's faith.

Or, to put it another way, Ragathiel is somewhat bothered by that C in Anathya's alignment. Inquisitors must be within 1 step of their deity's alignment, he's Lawful Good, and I see no ability that would let Anathya violate this restriction. How would you like to address this?

Her mouth works for a moment but no words come out. For the first time in years, the seasoned huntress feels like she did early in her training, small and alone, desperately seeking the approval she’d lost. In becoming a Slayer, she’s found a cause and a purpose, something to be proud of.

She’d never forget the look of pride on her trainer’s face when she took down her first dretch. That moment was the closest she’d ever come to feeling like she had her mother back. It was that feeling, coupled with a burning hatred for the vile creatures of the Abyss that drove her to be the best, pushed her to stop at nothing to eliminate the demons……..and that was it.

Thinking back she could definitely pinpoint moments where she’d disregarded minor rules, broken restrictions or violated things like access to a restricted area to do her job. If someone in a household was dealing with things they ddn’t understand, risking the summoning of something dangerous, didn’t that make up for kicking n their family’s door to stop something horrible from happening? Did she really go too far?

"I..I’m…” she starts, still trying to find the right words. ”Doing Ragathiel’s work…it’s the most important thing to me. Yes I want to protect people from the harm these monsters bring but I admit…I’m angry…I think I have been for a long time and…… when I hunt….when I put one of them down it…it feels better…..like I’m doing something right….something that would make them pay for all the pain and suffering they inflict.” she says unable to meet the Paladin’s eyes.

Julian gave a low whistle after everyone had left, leaving himself and Soltengrebbe alone with the treasure horde. That was Rowan's first mistake as he reached over and snatched up one of the garnets, rolling it around in the palm of his hand as he snagged up the regal looking scepter. "I could get used to this." He makes a show of it for about a minute, satisfying his humor and setting them back down. "Time to get serious. A heretical demon on the run and a dungeon of evil to be purged. A long day for sure lies ahead of us in the morning."

He retrieved his kits, not comfortable with the thought of leaving so many items unattended for long. He gives Soltengrebbe's dragon head a quick scratch around the its scaley jaw before getting to work on making new Extracts suitable for the next morning's endeavors.

Working on updating now! XD While my internet holds!

"I will get extra bedding prepared for you in the command tent, see you later then and good luck." She nods to Anathya, watching quietly as she slipped away in search of her own. Iomedae watch over her please, let know our enemy try and divide us.

At Jestak's words she smiled broadly, it was welcomed news and Rowan wasn't afraid to show that she was more then pleased Jestak chose to stick around. "It is one of the few perks we can afford on the march. An army is only so good as the care that those who lead it, give it. Same with the treatment of the prisoners you saw. It is my hope they come to join us as well. Though if Soltengrebbe warms up to you then you will have the warmest place in camp." She laughed lightly at that as she looked up at the wounded skies. Noting their colors with a tinge of sadness before looking back at Jestak. "Tonight you will stay with me in the command tent, Along with Julian and Anathya. In the morning I will have you serve under Arles, he will get you set on how things go around here. I suggest you keep an open mind. do that and you will do fine. Arles is a strong man, wounded in the last fight but a veteran warrior. I have come to rely on his advice and it is my hope you do the same, he won't lead you astray. Once I return from the Citadels depths we will meet again. For now, I feel like a drink." She leads Jestak back through camp again, this time a much quicker route on their way back to where they had started.

Oh the Dwarven ales, how she shall partake of thee. Drunken Slumber Party time. Also it'll be interesting as some of it is distributed among the Dawnbringers.

"Ragathiel understands the darkest impulses within us." the Paladin of Ragathiel said, not unkindly. "He is the greatest example of this, but he also understands the need to temper that desire with a devotion to duty, and to act with the chivalry expected of a knight. I am, of course, familiar with your work as an Inquisitor, and well aware that the normal tenets of the faith do not bind you... but if you break the rules too many times, then you don't understand the General's teachings at all, and you set yourself on the path to becoming the very thing you fight."

He raised one hand, indicating the blasted land, the dim sky, and the overwhelming hostility of the Worldwound... and this was just the edge of it, not even the depths. "The Abyss seeks to corrupt everything it touches. They might even have been stringing you along this whole time, trying to get you to justify your actions and take one step off the path, then another... until soon enough you're totally lost. It's easy to make excuses when you think you're doing the right thing, but if you become the very thing you fight, is it worth it?"

"I won't say you have to act in the same way I do - there are many correct ways to take vengeance, but all the paths are straight and narrow, and you have stepped off of yours. As I see it, Inquisitor Anathya, your choices are relatively simple. Change yourself and come more into line with Ragathiel's teachings, change your faith and follow a lord who can promote good without too many restrictions, as Commander Julian does... or leave the Worldwound and never come back, because otherwise, your corruption is only a matter of time. We must be vigilant, especially here, and heresy cannot be accepted in this force. Our mission is too important for that."

He indicated the pendant hanging around Anathya's neck. "I think the General believes in you, and wants your services. He will help you control your darker impulses, as he helps us all by being living proof that it can be done, but the desire to follow his teachings must be honest and come from within. Nobody can force it on you. Ragathiel took your magic as a warning - heed it, or he will take back the rest of what he has given you. It is better to lose the power you have gained than to lose your very soul to the Abyss, and he will not help you walk into darkness. What will it be, Inquisitor?"

---

Elsewhere in the camp, Soltengrebbe sat down with a heavy thump just outside of where Julian was busy performing alchemy, seeming delighted to have gotten some attention. (He also made it easier to avoid being disturbed, so Julian was able to work in peace...)

Jestak, on the other hand, visibly perked up at the idea of getting something to drink. She was definitely the sort who liked to party a bit... and the idea that this was a force that wasn't going to be uptight all the time was clearly appealing.

Anathya D. Tracker Demonslayer /Cold Iron Warden (Inquisitor) 10 Religion:Ragathiel| HP:148/148 | AC: 22 T: 15 FF: 17 |F: +12 R: +13 W: +11 | Init:+10 (+12) Per: +11(+13) |CMB+10 CMD 25 | Effects: C; Resist acid 5 cold 5 electricity 5 |Senses:Darkvision 60

Her head lowered, Anathya contemplates the Paladin's words. The idea that the General actually believed in her, wanted her representing him here at the Worldwound meant the world to her.

She rarely ever had the time to give thought to her soul, but the outlook provided was enlightening to say the least.

"I....understand now where I went wrong. Walked the line so often that I couldn't tell for sure when I was crossing it. I....we;come the General's help in controlling the rage and the darkness, in using it appropriately and standing for duty and chivalry as well, not just vengeance."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Paladin smiled and put one hand hand on Anathya's shoulder. "It takes a great deal of courage to humble yourself when you're wrong." he said. "Someone truly fallen wouldn't understand that. You've been alone for a long time, Inquisitor, hunting the darkness... but you're among friends now, and when you need help to stay on the narrow way, we will be here for you. You're welcome to join me anytime if you'd like a partner for studying the General's teachings." He let go of Anathya's shoulder, then picked up the stack of reports condemning her behavior. "I don't think we'll need these anymore." he mused, tossing them into the nearby fire. He touched his holy symbol a moment later. "My lord, I think Inquisitor Anathya understands the lesson you gave her."

Ragathiel apparently agreed.

Anathya's alignment has become Neutral Good (leaning Chaos). Conscious acts of chivalry and duty, including displays of these virtues, will move her towards Lawful Good. Swearing a vow to Ragathiel to strictly follow his teachings will move her alignment immediately to Lawful Good. Anathya has also regained the use of her spells. Note that behaving in chaotic ways, such as opposing legal authority* in favor of independent action (except for examining her own church, which is EXPECTED of Inquisitors) could move Anathya's alignment back to Chaotic Good. In that case, she would become an Ex-Inquisitor, following the class rules for this.

*Legal authority, right now, means Rowan and Julian (and arguably Irabeth, who's basically their second-in-command). XD They are acting under the direct, personal orders of the leader of the Crusades, Queen Galfrey of Mendev, and as such have the kind of credentials that Ragathiel would expect someone doing their duty to respect. As a Player Character, Anathya may be promoted to their equal later on (or may not - either way could be interesting, and will depend mostly on party and individual behavior).

Anathya releases a breath she didn't realize she was holding when she feels the divine connection to her magic restored. Though she didn't tend to depend too heavily on spellcasting, feeling cut off from that sacred gift was a loss far greater than she'd ever expected.

"Thank you.....for everything. I....I would welcome the opportunity to seek your council in the futures and....I think I'll definitely take you up on your offer at some point." she says, finally able to bring herself to make eye contact.

After getting more bedding for Jestak, Rowan retires to the command tent to relax some and meditate on todays events. Some of which was good and some of which was bad. Staunton Vaughn is dead. The Traitor of Kenebras and Drezen alike. Though he once fought for them before losing hope and wandering off into dark places... Here thoughts tumbled as she enjoyed some strong spirits with her new companion. She made sure not to drink too much, just enough to dull the edge before she slept. The Dawnbringers recover, the fighting is waning now and on the morrow lies the last push. Iomedae willing I will make good on my word and perhaps more then just the Citadel can be saved.

Before bed she prays to Iomedae, she prayed for the strength to win the day tomorrow, to heal those whose heart clung to darkness and to save those she could. When her prayers were complete she said her fond goodnights to Jestak and her companions. Julian was busily crafting away even at the dark hours of the night, truly the tiefling seemed to never rest. She left him to his work as she moved over to Soltengrebbe and edged in by his side, laying her head on his side while stroking the feline head with her hand. It was an odd sensation to sleep against such a large creature, but in this dark realm it was a welcome relief to have Soltengrebbe nearby. Perhaps even other Dawnbringers felt the same as her...

Updating my character sheet right now. Dealing with my health issues is tiresome but I am on the upswing. Have a couple more long appointments tomorrow and hopefully I can avoid a stay again. Still here for the long haul and thanks for the patience.

Julian sneezes, he looks around suspiciously before returning to his work. He politely greets Rowan and Jestak upon their return, but doesn't stop working on his extracts. When they start drinking he politely declines. "Can't be muddled right now, lest I want to blow myself up. Again." He says the last part with a dark chuckle, how many times had he avoided death in perfect his bombs. How did he still have all his digits even...

He finishes the last of his potions several minutes after Rowan had fallen asleep. Soltengrebbe looked disgustingly comfortable with the Paladin laying against him. "Like a overgrown house cat now... With three heads and I thought us Teiflings were weird." He puts away his alchemy lab and performs his evening prayers outside the tent. Wearing his cloak and the Ring of the North Star he focuses for a moment and to those watching they see the Cloak of the Night Sky react. The current celestial body above the rolling darkness of the abyss forms hazily on the cloak, as it formed Julian took up the edges of the cloak before spreading his wings wide. He started with a slow dance, fluttering his wings and moving his dexterous limbs in time with the feeling within his heart. It was his praise to Desna, to his long journey and the continuation of that journey until his time was done in this realm.

Though he did't plan on leaving anytime soon. Part of his dance was his prayer to Desna, to help him seek out those whoare lost and bring them back unto the path and to help him find the person who had helped him years ago. Until he saw their bones he wouldn't believe the woman to be dead, not until then. His legs quivered at the thought of their death, though it wasn't fear that shook him but anger.

<:Focus redeemed, if you truly believe then you will find that which you seek. But don't let them break you, you have come to far...:>

The words of his blade and the feeling of calm from the ring of the North Star helped to banished the dark thoughts in the back of his mind. It made him feel as though the wrath were meaningless now, the sense of calm and purpose drove him more then raw emotions. Even his Feral form today calmed after finding the ring...

It was a truly interesting and wonderful day.

When he was done with his prayer he returned to the tent and checked to see if Jestak was asleep before wrapping himself in his magical cloak and bedding down against Soltengrebbe as well. He had to admit, for an overgrown housecat, the big beast was as warm as an evening fire.

The morning didn't arrive so much as it sort of haphazardly stumbled into existence, going from a dim red sky to a slightly-less-dim sky, one that simply made it easier to see the reddish tint overhead and the general malevolence that hung over this place. The ground had shaken a few times during the night - nothing too serious, but nobody had slept particularly well. (Except maybe Soltengrebbe, who'd used a paw to gently pull Julian in and covered both him and Rowan throughout the night.)

If you had any last-minute preparations, now was probably a good time. Otherwise, it was time to see how deep the darkness here was...

Julian rose unsteadily at first, still getting used to the cuddling but feeling particularly aware of how little time they might have left. The shaking could be the mid or ending phases of whatever ritual they are invoking... "It's now or never Rowan, lets gather up Anathya and see what lies below this grave stone." He makes sure to greet the officers of the camp before heading out with Rowan as well. Especially favoring Nurah with a rather mischievous smile. "Anything in particular you want me to bring back for your chronical? Minotaur horn? Tail? Essence el la Shadow Demon~?" He was in high spirits today, even though he didn't know what awaited them fully in the depths of the Citadel.

He finished what little preparations he had left, tucking new extracts into his belt as they gathered for the, hopefully, last strike.

Upon seeing Anathya he hands her some extracts.

"This extract will allow you to react more quickly to enemies trying to flank you. Don't ask me how but trust me when I say it works."

[Extract: Flank Shield obtained - Anathya]

"This extract will give you a boost in temporary protection. Much like a Wizards shield..."

[Extract: Shield obtained - Anathya]

All extracts are made as a 9th level caster when it comes to duration.

He hands Rowan a similar looking shield extract as well. Leaving himself with one as an emergency if and when they run into much stronger opposition.

[Extract: Shield obtained - Rowan]
"All of my extracts can be shared, if you need something just ask."

AKA feel free in OOC to ask me for something and follow it up IC, so long as Rednal doesn't mind. That way extract handing goes quicker lol.

"I focused my spells primarily on support today. Since yesterday we were dragging hard at the end I decided this time that I would ensure we had a swift and brutal offense and healing package. In the morning she prayed again, communing with Iomedae in the hopes that she was still on the right path. She tries not to be over doing it in frontof Jestak but she also would love to see the woman one day accept the faith into her own fiery warrior heart. The shaking the night before had placed her on edge to get this strike over with so she spent sometime conversing with Jestak before departing.

Diplomacy - Improve attitude Jestak: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (18) + 19 = 37

She reiterated her previous suggestions as she took Jestak over to meet Arles for the first time. "Arles, this is Jestak. She is a former soldier turned ally from our recent raid on the Citadel. She has decided to stick with us and I told her she would have to serve under you in the mean time while we finish dealing with the Citadel." She looks to Jestak then a warm smile on her face as she explains her decision. "What we face is may be beyond our control to handle easily, the last thing I want is for them to lash out at you in spite. Listen to Arles and learn from him what you can, he's an old salt but a tough veteran and he won't steer you wrong."

She gives Arles a nod then. "Run her through the ropes and see to it Jestak understands our command structure, a hard day of training is a good start. Though I warn you, she has a hell of a swing with that blade of hers. So be ready to take some hits." Rowan chuckles as she remains long enough to ensure a good transition for Jestak into the ranks while she was gone. "Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sisters, and they will stand by you even unto death." I will not lose any I can save to this darkness, like a shadow it shall be driven away by the light of truth and friendship. Though I long for her to serve Iomedae, I must undoubtedly accept that not all can here her call. But if she doesn't succumb to Baphomet and Deskari then I will have done my duty. She parts with them both, hoping that today would be a good day of learning and building of comradery for the Warrior woman known as Jestak.

She relies her orders to the troops and leaves them in the capable hands of Irabeth and the others. She listens to Julian's curious words with Nurah with a warm smile on her face before unsurprisingly taking an extract from him.

She nods at his explanation then and agrees with the plan. "I will take rear guard then, ensuring no one gets the drop on Anathya from behind. It isn't very glamorous but rear guard is even more important then forward scout. I have focused around handling undead and bolstering allies through healing as well. Though my arcane spells are more focused on striking an opponent hard and creating swarms as well." Shelooked to their newest companion, not wanting to leave the woman out of the conversation. "Anathya anything to add?"

After having said her farewells to the Paladin who'd never actually given her his name, Anathya makes her way across the camp back to the darkened command tent. Glad for her heaven born eyesight, she notes the others already asleep, the slight scent of alchemical materials hanging in the air.

Scanning the large tent, the sight of Julian tucked up against the massive chimera raises an eyebrow, but it is the sight of Rowan snuggled up against him that results in a full on smile. She was willing to bet the vast majority of the crusaders outside had never seen their commander look this adorable.

She was willing to bet the vast majority of the crusaders outside had never seen their commander look this adorable.

Moving silently through the tent she makes her way over to the bedding Rowan had set up for her as promised and removes her armor, slipping under the covers in a linen shift. Laying silently in the darkness, she whispers a prayer to the General of Vengeance. "My lord, please grant me the strength of arms to bring your divine wrath opon those that do evil, the strength of character to temper my own wrath with honor and duty, and awareness to see the path ahaead of me. Let the fire in my heart forge me into a stronger impliment of good, and my eyes be open to the good in the world, not just the darkness, even here. Thank you for giving me a chance, and bringing me out of the darkness. I have been alone for a long time. Help me learn to be a part of something greater."

Bringing the winged amulet to her lips she drifts off into a surprisingly restful sleep.

Awakening the following morning she dresses and prepares, checking her weapons and gear as was part of her ritual, preparing mind and battle for war, yet she felt a bit different. More organized, settled as if part of the chaos that always raged within was....calmed. As Julian dispenses his concoctions and explains them, she takes them gratefully, knowing that in the heat of battle either could be the difference between life and death.

As tactical positions are discussed she nods in agreement. With her choice of weapon and fighting style being in the middle was no detriment to her, in fact it was a benefit since she had the best range in combat and was likely to become a target for enemy forces. It would also allow her to lay down cover fire for her more melee trained companions.

"I stand ready to support and defend. I am at your command." she says in all seriousness.

Julian looks at Rowan and shrugs. "Unless Rowan differs I prefer you stay loose Anathya and give suggestions if you have them. I'm no grand tactician and though I have seen my fair share of blood it was from waiting for an order that never came before the panic set in. Now I know your far more keen than that, so if I start acting strange down there then you need to take me down. Fast." He pauses for a moment before adding with a roguish smile. "I would preferably want to come out Alive but not at the expense of the success of this mission. We've come too far to pack it in for one Tiefling." Einherjar rattled on his side in disapproval but Julian merely kept smiling. No matter what happened today he would go do smiling. With his honest words given h nods to Anathya and Rowan before he leads the way back to the Citadel, quietly sure that if worse comes to worse Anathya and Rowan would do what they had to do. He couldn't begrudge them their duty if he went mad in the darkness.

He unconsciously ran a finger across the vial of mutagen. Knowing full well what it could do if he turned on his companion's and what it will do to those that take them lightly. <:Do you take your promise so lightly Redeemed?:>

<:No Einherjar, but they must be ready for any issues that may arise. However I still plan on finding her and this Citadel is just a massive stone in the way.:>

<:Good, quitting isn't an option. Nor early retirement Redeemed. We will see this through.:>

Rowan's face was a mask of the turmoil she felt, being point guard made Julian vulnerable and he had literally signed a warrant for his death but she would take him alive. "Yes." She had to digest the words of her companion as he prowled off ahead of them. "He was a crusader long before me and from what I have gleaned his experience was far from pleasant. Though I agree to a point with his words I still aim to bring him back alive regardless if he sells himself short." She keeps her sword sheathed as she walks with Anathya on their way back to the Citadel. Her armor making a rather low amount of noise with each step, she was still getting used to the feel of the Plate mail as she elaborated. "If he imbibes his Mutagen and is turned against us some point later on... Well, he could do far greater damage then some demons, at least in my opinion and his added complement of alchemical weapons are numerous."

He was probably the single greatest threat they could face if he was turned but a part of her was completely at ease with the idea that he would not fall so easily. Turning the subject to a lighter note she focused on Anathya then. "I hope you were able to take care of your business in camp then? Any issues or unwelcome experiences that I need to know of?"

"No. Things went well I...just need to practice restraint. Remember not to lose myself in my desire to bring punishment, and to make it clean. The vengeance part has always been easy for me. The chivalry not so much. I'm not used to not being alone and fighting to survive every second of every day. Making it here by myself.....I crossed lines I shouldn't have, I see that now and you have my word you have nothing to worry about in terms of me going rogue." she says earnestly looking at Rowan. "And if things with Julian were to take a turn for the worst.....I trust your judgement....perhaps better than my own in this. I hope that day never comes but...if there comes a time you deem it necessary.....give me the word and I promise to make it clean."

Everyone gets a 3000 GP bonus for good roleplaying. Your GM strongly approves. XD

Despite the threat looming beneath your feet, taking a break to rest and center yourselves had been... rather helpful, really. When engaged in seemingly-endless combat against the demons that inhabited this land, it was all too easy to lose track of what truly mattered. When the only thing you engaged in was violence, you weren't so different from the creatures you fought, so it really did help to remember what you were fighting for. The Abyss corrupted spirits as well as bodies, after all...

(Nurah, incidentally, seemed quite interested in the Shadow Demon. She was planning to head back to looking around once you'd left.)

It was probably just as well that you'd taken the time to focus before heading out, because the first thing you heard were the whispers coming up their stairwell. No amount of waiting changed them, though, but they got louder and louder as your formation cautiously advanced down the steps. The steps went down for 40 feet or so before emerging into a far more vile area. The ceiling height averages to 20 feet, and demonic carvings and twisting runes decorate the walls. Numerous patches of pulsating, luminescent red lichen grow on the walls, providing enough light to see dimly by. That's far from the worst of it, though.

There was evil here, and not in the metaphorical sense. You could feel it pressing in on you, filthy and deranged.

In addition to the nasty whispers, there are two traits to be aware of here. First, spells and SLAs with the Good and/or Lawful descriptors are impeded for as long as you're down here. In addition, the area is Unhallowed.

The walls of the first chamber hold numerous dark, narrow prison cells. Around the main entrance stands an iron cage, with a cell door blocking entrance into the main vault. It's not locked, and doesn't seem to be trapped.

In the Citadel

The pulse of evil here was familiar, like a long forgotten heartbeat. It was warm, inviting and enticing all in the same moment. However Julian's resolve shone through in the stony stare he gave the foul glow coming off the walls.

<:Redeemed.:>

Einherjar's voice was nearly lost on him as part of him wanted to imbibe the mutagen and show the darkness what for. To rebel against his baser nature openly in the eyes of every abyssal power to watch and lament their allowing him to escape alive.

<:REDEEMED!:>

The psychic boom made him grunt aloud. "I'm fine Einherjar. This is no different than what I live with everyday in a way. Besides despite my company I won't start acting like a womanizer." Einherjar's silent laughter maybe his stony face turn into a glare. "I said that outloud didn't I?"

<:And that...:>

"And that..." He waves a hand at his companions. "I'm fine, this is... somewhat normal in a way but I can manage." He could feel it pressing in on him, heavy and deranged and his stony face slowly grew into a smile. He hoped whoever had placed this aura here was frustrated, because he intended to keep them that way and refused to bend under the influence of these dark whispers.

With a tight grip on Einherjar's hilt he proceed to assess the seemingly unlocked iron cage for a nasty surprise.

That is correct. Only spells with those descriptors are disrupted by this area - other spells will work fine. (Incidentally, they're still impeded even if you're using Mythic Power to cast them, and you'll have to make the concentration check or lose the MP.)

Finding nothing dangerous in the immediate area Julian passes through the open cage door and looks around the room before settling on his usual approach. He starts by going northward. And exploring each alcove from west to east, to south and back to west again until this first room was searched in its entirety. He commented on Rowan's spell casting as he searched. "Don't get spooked just yet. We don't have the luxury of wasting spells. Especially as we don't know if they haven't expanded this dungeon to larger then records indicate. Rowan set a hand on Anathya's shoulder, giving her a reassuring squeeze as she spoke more softly then before. "Don't over do it." She liked Anathya's fire greatly and would act the same if their positions were swapped. As quickly as she assured her she pulled her hand away and watched their surroundings warily.

Rowan weighed there options, if Anathya started to fall here it would be bad. It was a pity she couldn't carry her out of the ruins with her powers just yet. Julian's comment brought her out of her deep thought and she nodded. In her haste she had wasted a resource and now she hoped her companion was incorrect. Only then noticing that he hadn't imbibed his mutagen yet, something she should have noted sooner as he always started off each exploration ready for a blood bat. She felt relived that for once this brilliant alchemist was actually using his head. "I will stick close to you then, let me know if it worsens and I will try and alleviate the symptoms if I can."

Anathya probably didn't know yet but Rowan's speciality wasn't commanding or combat, it was being a healer. 'A rare talent' her instructor had always said during training sessions decades ago. A memory that was drummed up in his hellish place as it echoed in a more negative then positive light. Shaking it off she refocused on the mission at hand. Talking to Anathya again. "Let's watch this door while Julian does his skulking around." She motions to the double doors to the west and draws her Demon-slaying longsword in preparation for a fight to come.

There were two short hallways to the north and south, not quite part of the room and unexplored by Julian's search. The alcoves were... well, mostly empty. There were inhabitants, but all were long dead. As for the double doors to the east...

A long passageway extends past multiple prison cells before ending within a barred chamber to the east. An alcove along the south wall includes another set of iron doors leading south, while opposite this a barred gate provides access to another set to the north. Floating near the end of the hallway are two spectres - each appears as a horribly mangled human paladin with limbs broken in multiple places.
