Tahata smiles back kindly at Ayame as they head towards the longhall, Maitoh trotting along between the two.

That the longhall is seemingly empty surprises Tahata. He looks around carefully, his sharp vision probing the dark corners and the shadows cast by the fire pits and torches.

"I doubt we are alone here," he says, "this place is guarded and the fires are lit, almost as if we are expected guests."

Coming into the room you get the impression that this building was used for elaborate feasts and entertainment by Snorri Stone-Eye. The fire pitts are three feet deep and hold burning coals and ash to a depth of one foot.

Along with the doors around the room there is a balcony that wraps around holding tables and chairs for feasts.

The keen senses of Maitoh are also enough to get you a warning that something is coming from the smoke holes a moment before two swarms of ravens appear and move to engulf the party. In fact he is so quick that you all get a drop on them.

"Watch the ceiling!" Loren exclaims.

He raises both hands together and unleashes a volley of snowballs into the oncoming birds.

Loren's shout comes at the exact moment Tahata spots a cloud of birds swarm in through the smoke holes in the high ceiling. The cawing of ravens is unmistakable and Tahata raises his spear in readiness. "Maitoh, qorumaq!" he calls, pointing for the wolf to guard Ayame from the birds filling the hall, before stepping forward and sweeping his spear into the nearest flock.

Tahata - Free Action to handle Maitoh, Free Action to 5ft step, Standard Action to attack blue (hoping they're large enough that they don't ignore weapon damage).
Maitoh - Standard Action to Ready to attack any enemies that threaten Ayame.

"gaa! Durian yells out as a swarm of birds come rushing in. in a gut reaction Durian just starts swatting at the birds with his fists and hoping for the best.

Ayame froze for a moment when the ravens swarmed in. She was thankful that her friends stepped in when they did. Tahata commanding Maitoh to remain at her side, Ayame remained were she was so that it was easier on him. So to be of use to the group, she began to sing, inspiring her allies.

Loren launches a flurry of snowballs at the swarms of bats who manage to avoid some of the damage. Tahata attacks with spear but cannot connect with any of the tiny bodies making up the swarms. Likewise Durian fails to connect. Ayame is froze for a moment, composing herself she begins to inspire her companions.

he holds his shield up to try to fend the bats off, then swings at them a few times with his free hand.

Normally it would give you an AOO. In this case I could call it a five foot step but with a swarm that seems bullshit. So yes you get the AOO.

Ayame paused in her her singing though the song remained in the air. Then she focused upon her own defense.

Seriously, the bard spells I chose are not goo for swarms...So! Total defense action.

Its not a swarm heavy AP, I think this is an annoying anomaly.

There is always a swarm or two in any AP. For some reason always early!

Loren aims another volley of snowballs into the red swarm.

Seeing the first swarm collapse under the weight of Durian's blows, Tahata steps forward to take on the second. He hears the familiar sound of Loren's spellcasting, pausing briefly as the magical snowballs zip past him, then wades in with his spear. Maitoh remains obediently by Ayame's side, protecting the young woman.

Tahata - Free Action to 5ft step, Standard Action to attack red. Could someone move me please, I can't from my iPad.
Maitoh - as previously.

Loren's snowballs are enough to end the second swarm and the combat, its a good thing since Tahata missed his attack.

A bit of looking around and you can tell that the rooms behind the two northern most doors are empthy with just some broken rubble, probably used to defend the stairs. Guards could grab rubble and rain it down on invaders.

The next room on the west side of the room numerous wooden bed frames with rope mattresses occupy this sparsely furnished room. It does not appear that anyone has used this room recently, but it could quarter as many as a dozen. The small room to the north inside that room is a crude toilet.

There are three more doors on this level, along with the stairs leading to the balcony. Where too next?

Loren steps to the North-East door and listens and examines it for traps.

If he doesn't hear or see anything, he will try to open it.

Durian checks in a few small rooms and finds nothing, then falls in behind Loren at the door the elf chose.
"you want to be first in, or would you like me to do the honors?
he asks, hefting his shield.

Tahata calls Maitoh to his side with a gesture, the wolf obediently trotting to join his companion. The two follow Loren to the door, moving quietly so as not to disturb him while he checks the door. Tahata nods at Durian as he offers to enter first and raises his spear, ready to support whoever enters the room beyond,

"Durian does have a shield." Ayame said as she skipped up to join her friends. She even gave a gently scratch behind Maitoh's ear in thanks for the protection. "I'm surprised that we haven't found more people... I mean I don't enjoy fighting or anything, but isn't it strange?" She asked.

Only due to Lorens very sensitive ears he detects a very low sound of either humming or chanting. It is unclear which. Not sure how to describe Ooohhhmmmmm sound that is sometimes made in meditation.

The party can only assume that if someone or someones is in this room the other doors may have occupants as well.

"Huh... maybe we should check again?" Ayame asks the group.

Durian moves past Loren and tries to open the door as quietly as possible

he takes a look inside, expecting a fight to break out at any moment

As a GM I hate rooms like this. Multiple rooms with things in them. Clearly they would hear combat and investigate but if I do that the party would be overwhelmed. This and the size of man rooms in Pathfinder are my pet peeves.

Ten sleeping pallets lie neatly arranged about this room. At the foot of each is a small locker for personal belongings. An iron trap door sits in the floor near the east wall.

Along with the furnishings you see four ninjas in the room. Two appear to be asleep, at least laying down, and two are meditating with eyes closed facing the door. Durian was quiet enough that they are unaware of your presence.

Seriously how would ten sleeping pallets fit in this room.

Note there is a surprise round and round 1 for some of you.

Durian is somewhat surprised to see 4 people crammed in such a small room, but was expecting trouble and is ready to pounce.

as soon as the door is open he attacks the closest target, just assuming at this point that anything he sees is likely an enemy ninja. he tries to take down the ninja before it can react, going straight for the jaw

Ayame moved into place so that she could have a view into the room.

SURPRISE ROUND

Tahata sees the sleeping ninjas through the open door and slips into the room before they can react, indicating for Maitoh to watch over Ayame with a quick hand signal. The wolf lopes over to Ayame, standing ready to protect her.

Tahata - Move Action to move 20ft, Free Action to handle Maitoh.
Maitoh - Move Action to move 20ft.

ROUND 1

Tahata takes the opportunity to deal with one of the ninjas before he can react, stabbing his spear down at the nearest enemy.

Tahata - Standard Action to attack one of the meditating ninjas (I'm not sure which are sleeping and which are meditating, but I can reach them all).
Maitoh - Standard Action to ready to attack any enemy that tries to attack him or Ayame.

Tahata spear, Power Attack, bull's strength, prone target: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 7 - 1 + 2 + 4 = 27
Damage, Power Attack, bull's strength: 1d8 + 5 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 3 + 3 = 19

A coup de grace would require an extra stealth roll as two of the ninjas are awake, just meditating. What Durian did makes sense. What he did is more effective as a coup de grace is a full round action, I think.

Fort: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Durians first blow lands solidly on the pink ninja and though he does not 'knock him out' he does substantial damage. His second attack is devastating and kills the pink ninja permanently. Having gotten the jump on them Durian is also able to land a blow on the sleeping black ninja for substantial damage.

Tahata is also quite effective and lands another hard blow on the green mediating ninja

Loren follows this up with a shard of ice that misses its target.

The ninjas are in very difficult situations but do manage to start shouting an alarm as they stand gather weapons and stand up. All in the room can take AOO's on any of the three still standing. I will wait for those to happen. Your choice of target as all need to stand and draw weapons.

Ayame, Loren and Maitoh can hear commotion from the other doors as the alarm has been raised.

"Guys! We have more company on the way!" Ayame informed them as the sound of the other doors reached her ears. "So let us finish this quickly." She requested before she began to sing.

Lorens little shard of ice strikes green but Tahtat cannot land his attack via spear. Durian shatters the jaw of the black ninja who falls dead from the below.

The remaining two ninjas clearly know they are beat and their tricks will do little in this small room. Still they attack, both at Tahata who has them pinned to the north wall.

Durian quickly steps over the crumpled body of the second ninja he dropped, stepping up to aid Tahata quickly.

Then he readies an action to cast Flurry of Snowballs at any group of approaching enemies.

"I know!" Ayame said. "I said there were people coming! ... It's like being home all over again." Ayame muttered the last part to herself as she made her way to the room "Maitoh! Come on over here!" Ayame called to the wolf that was set to protect her. She made her way to the far back corner to be out of the way of her friends.

I think the ninja gets a AoO on her, if the green on is the one still up.

Tahata grunts as the ninja's weapon strikes him in the arm, blood welling up even as he twists away from the second strike. He brings his spear to bear on one of the ninjas as he hears Maitoh arrive beside him, guarding the door to protect Ayame.

Tahata - Standard Action to attack green.
Maitoh - Move Action to move 10ft, Standard Action to ready to attack any enemies that might attack him or Ayame.

Tahata spear: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Durian fails to connect with his attacks while Tahata quickly finishes off one of the ninjas.

Ayame moves back into the room so the new arrivals cannot focus on her first. The ninja did not take an AOO, I just dont see them worrying about you with the other two up in their business.

The remaining ninja attacks Durian but his blow misses the brawler.

At this point the first two of the thungs burst out of the door, each is carrying a spear and has an ax on their back. Startled they stare at Loren, the lone occupant of the room for a moment just before a flurry of snowballs pelts into them, killing the lead thug and hurting the other two.

Tahata pulls his spear from the dead ninja as he falls to the floor, blood spattering across the stone. He hears the cries of alarm and pain from the corridor outside and turns to leave. "Durian, can you handle this last one?" he asks before motioning to Maitoh to follow.

The wolf stands and starts running alongside Tahata who calls "Maitoh, cinah!" Maitoh obeys, slipping past the nearest thug to attack him from behind while Tahata attacks from the front.

Maitoh - Move Action to move 30ft using Acrobatics vs CMD: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 to avoid the AoO, Standard Action to attack blue.

Durian finally connects with some attacks, and if the ninja falls he will take a step towards the door.

Just realised that I forgot to roll Maitoh's free trip. And I also spotted that I've been missing out the fact that Weapon Focus (bite) applies to his post-bite trip attempts.

Trip vs CMD if hits: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Last Ninja AOO: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

The final ninja in the first room lashes out, poorly, at Tahata as he moves away and only manages to knock himself off balance. That poorly aimed swing will be the last thing that the ninja does as Durain delivers two powerful unarmed strikes. There is a loud snap as the ninjas shoulder shatters just before he falls dead.

Tahata, having crossed the room skewers the first, blue, thug and he drops dead having been already hurt by snowballs. The second, green, thug fairs no better as his leg is torn wide open by Maitoh.

Inside the room those close enough can see that there are still three thungs.

Technically Loren and Ayame ae still in round 3 so the above is the result of T and D's round 4 action.

Loren launches a beam of frost at one of the two standing thugs, but doesn't come close to hitting him.

"Do, Re, Me, Fa" Ayame hummed out as three other forms stepped out from her to harmonize. The Ayame stepped back out, blade at the ready.

Ayame summons forth some images to help protect her while Loren smacks an ice cube off the wall.

The three remaining thugs rush out. It would almost be comical watching them angle though the door if it were not for the battle axes they each wield.

Only one of them manages to connect, clipping Tahata in the shoulder.

All the thugs are now out in the open and each of these rooms seemed over stuffed with people.

Funny enough the book called for 8 thugs in the room! There is just no way.
