Bedlam Bottomland |
Bedlam signs
Why not just wake him by butchering a pig, a sheep, or even a horse; so that he wakens smelling a beautiful bouquet of bounty!
The dwarf smiles.
Den we be just visiting nice like!
Adelie |
Adelie retreats from the room to float near Mone and Aurora. He hopes Tragershen decides to cast Detect Magic, but he doesn’t feel strongly enough about it to say anything more.
Anzath |
Anzath fishes out a set of common manacles and simple lock.
Aurora Fallowarc |
Aurora nods to Adelie and takes up position near Tragershen, mace and shield at the ready to protect the squishy wizard if anything goes awry.
Tragershen |
Before Tragershen casts the hideous laughter spell, he'll cast detect magic on the sleeper and his immediate surroundings. If he discovers anything with the spell, he'll relay it silently. If he doesn't find anything, he'll relay that and, when the others are ready, carry out the plan.

Had a busy weekend and didn't find time to get online and find 40+ posts and a crazy plan! Good times !
Lolygert watches the preparations , magical and otherwise, to deal with the mystery of the large, muscled guy.
He's about to add his own suggestion, "Why don't we..." when the muscle-man roars in fury.
Lolygert blinks, impressed....then not one to be one-upped, gets angry himself....and roar's back!
RAGIN'!
"RRRRRRAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!"

Bedlam Bottomland |
Bedlam wades back toward his friends grumbling
Go git un pig. No, go git un sheep. Me be not un farmer! How me be knowing what da sheep be?
The dwarf stops at the rear of the group. Standing on his tiptoes, the dwarf struggles to see the developing scene.
Sumone be press'n pause on da remote?
GM Parrot |
Gelver starts to shove his way forward, screaming at the top of his lungs.
WMC: 1d20 ⇒ 8
His voice echoes deeply into the inky blackness of the corridor. Hobbaby joins him.
Ippolit sighs and takes up a position at the rear, peering into the darkness and readying his guisarme against any threats that might sneak up behind you. He intends to survive. "I really should request my own light source," he mutters.
Marthek rips out Anzath's arrow. Red, living, human blood pours from the wound, but he doesn't seem to slow down at all.
Instead, he leaps to his feet, taking a swipe from Gelver:
AOO Gelv: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 251d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 162d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 6) + 4 = 13
Your madman swiftly chops their madman on the throat. For unknown reasons, probably related to universe-level mechanics beyond the ken of humanoidkind, your madman's sword just doesn't hurt their madman all that much, despite the absolute perfection of the shot.
Yours yells "CURSED, CURSED!"
Theirs yells "MARTHEK! DIE DIE DIE!" and brings down his greatclub on yours, his eyes filled with RAGE.
Greatclub: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 201d8 + 23 ⇒ (8) + 23 = 31
It is Gelver's lucky day. He pulls his tower shield between himself and certain death, shrinking down behind its protective arc. The impact has a sound like close thunder, but somehow Gelver's equipment holds under the blow, and he even maintains his footing. Gelver stares over the rim of his shield and into the looming eyes of the other madman, screaming "NETHYS! THE CURSED! BOTH CURSED!"
Marthek roars.
It's a noisy scene.
Bedlam Bottomland |
Not wanting to be left in the rear, while folks are just window shopping, the dwarf bullies his way to the front. Arresting his progress once the Large Oak Tree! presents itself, Bedlam looks (way) up at it.

Rolling so many 18s and 19s lately, NOT on attacks with the scimitar.
Aurora Fallowarc |
The shrieking earns a cringe from Aurora. With another uttered prayer, a faint white glow flows through the air for just a brief moment.
Prayer — Aurora and all of her allies in a 40ft. radius burst gain a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks, while each of their foes takes a -1 penalty on such rolls. 6 round duration.
Adelie |
Like Aurora, Adelie winces at the sudden cacophony of roars and crashes. He reluctantly adds to it by calling a bolt of lightning to strike Marthek.

Tragershen |

In case it might be of some use, Tragershen continues to focus on his divination spell. He peers at the dangerous man they face, hoping to determine if some sort of spell upon him is the cause for his aggression or his power.
Round 2 of detect magic, should tell him the number of magic auras in his cone, and the strength of the strongest aura.
GM Parrot |
Ref: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 103d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5) = 8
Marthek bears the brunt of the bolt and takes the toxophilite's torrent of arrows.
Tragershen's Detect Magic notices magical auras aplenty. After trying to focus through the magic-aura Santamas Tree that is Bedlam, Tragershen sees that Marthek's greatclub is magical. Marthek himself radiates an aura, and it's stronger than the greatclub--a faint aura, but Trag knows a faint aura means a level 6-10 spell.
Extrapolating from Detect Evil's text here.
Trag is focused on Marthek, but he sees many auras bubbling around his party members. Oddly, he notices an aura radiating off of Gelver. He's only had one round to see it, so that's all he knows at the moment.
Tal may act! Twice?! Lolly may act, too! And then the NPCs, of course.

Marthek goes the way of many a barbarian--caught napping, overwhelmed by numbers, knocked unconscious and out of rage... he is now dead.
Blood soaks into the ratskin nest where Marthek dreamed his restless dreams. The herculean club lies unattended for the first time in gods only know how many long, dark years.
Almost always poor encounter design to set a single foe against a party. The d6 I rolled a while back was to see if he was sleeping or not. I'm kind of sad we won't get to see him in action.
Gelver turns away from the mammocked body of his foe. He flings himself in front of Aurora and, sheathing his sword, falls to his knees muttering "Cursed... cursed." He rubs his face with his free hand as if plagued by invisible flies. But this isn't necessarily unusual behavior for Gelver.
Mammocked?! Why yes, I am reading Shakespeare today. Combat over.
Tragershen sees the spell fade from Marthek's body, slipping away before he can ascertain anything else about the nature of the magic. Where once radiated an aura, now there is only a dead man. Less distracted now, he notices very faint auras in the rat nest.
Anzath |
Is Gelvefr still majicked?
"Sh!t."
Anzath lowers her bow and looks around the room.
Tragershen |
Tragershen continues to concentrate on his spell, even though the melee has concluded. He tries to discern the aura that he glimpsed on Gelver, and he takes note of the auras in the rat nest.
Bedlam Bottomland |
Bedlam pauses. His blue eyes squeezed shut. Body tensed. A single drop of perspiration slowly and nervously limps down his face to hide in his beard.
After a full minute, the dwarf nervously chuckles
Me no Paladin! No worries den!
The relieved dwarf searches for loot!
GM Parrot |
Tragershen finds an aura on Gelver. He'll have to use his knowledge of arcana to determine what exactly is going on.
Bedlam and Tragershen quickly determine that the lesser auras in the rat nest emanate from a series of scrolls and a spellbook. While digging in the blood, he also finds a gold ingot that is worth about 400 GP in coin.
Aurora Fallowarc |
Aurora drops her hand to Gelver's head and makes a hushing noise. "Yes, this place is cursed. That is why we are here," she says before bringing the hand down under his chin and attempting to encourage him back to his feet.
Tragershen |
Knowledge (arcana) 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19.
After he checks the scrolls and book for poison, he'll let one of the trappy people check for traps, and then he'll examine them.

"Whatever it was about this place that drove him mad, his suffering is at an end now. We should ensure in some way that he does not serve the minions of Orcus in another involuntary way."
If no one has a more elegant way to make sure he doesn't come back as a ghoul or something else, I could acid splash him until there isn't anything left to be used.
Bedlam Bottomland |
Bedlam merrily gathers up the magical scrolls and spellbook. He hands them over to Tragershan.
If'n be finding any un me types ov formulas, please be letting me copy dem.
The dwarf then readies his gear for more s'ploring!
If this takes a while; he will brew a Mutagen.

Luzi the parrot just knocked over my mouse, which miraculously Xed out of the window I was typing in, which means I lost my post. Sigh. Short version:
Tragershen doesn't have Read Magic prepared, so if he wants to dig into the spellbook and scrolls he'll have to use the more cumbersome Spellcraft + Detect Magic method, unless I'm forgetting something important.
Also, he doesn't have Light prepared. I'll assume that Lolly is using his Light cantrip, which seems to be the party's sole light source at the moment, what with Kritfisher sheathed.
Do you settle in for some identifying, or do you push on?
Tragershen |
I don't think anyone is hurt, so we can probably press on. I can identify stuff when we need to settle somewhere for a while. When those valuables are checked for traps and/or poison, Trag will tuck them into his pack until he can work on them.
Talathel Rhuiren |
"We can sort through the materiel later. We can press on for now."
