Lord Braggett Fizzlebotham IV
|
"Devils!" Lord Braggett dramatically announces, "Devils and Orcs are rampaging through the land with preternatural aggression. The people of the surrounding homesteads are being evacuated back to the safety of Arwyll Stead until we such time that this clear and present danger is dealt with once and for all." He slides out of the saddle and roots around in his bags, suddenly realising how hungry with all the talk of food, and pulls out a loaf of bread, holding it up high. "Hearty bread, Sir! A grateful baker regularly sends me baskets of his finest long-lasting loaves, and I would be honoured to share some as we discuss news of orcs. You say that they are marching up and down the Path Road?"

"Where're my manners. You folks must be starving." The dwarf starts clearing a table cluttered with his alchemist's laboratory, a moor's head, an alembic, a retort, mortar and pestle, stirring rod, flasks, beakers, and sundry other supplies.
Taking their cue from the gnome cavalier, the refugees start hauling out the meager rations they'd packed for the journey.
Iselle seems all too happy to prepare for the journey now. "Gorum, about time we gave up farming! I'm not cut out for scrapin' dirt."
Linno offers a rueful smile. "My experiments on the soil have all failed. Yeah, I'm finally resigned to giving up agri-business for good."
The dwarf looks around his home. "I'm amenable to leaving, but I've got to protect my property before I do so."
"Any of you able to help me set up some traps around my home to deter would-be looters? I've come up with a pretty potent 'deterrent.'" His grin suggests he hopes somebody will trigger them.
The "traps" are little more than flasks of concentrated alchemist’s fire rigged to pressure plates, but they seem enough to put Linno’s worries to rest. "Careful, though. It's dangerous stuff. I call the concoction 'Get Off My Lawn.'"

Hanlin introduces himself to the woman and dwarf and politely declines to assist with trap making "Its been a long day I'm afraid. Would it be ok for us to stay the night or? How much longer is it to get back to the Stead from here?"

"Fiiiiiine..." Nina sighs, looking rather disappointed. "You're no fun at all, Inky! Geeze..."
Turning her attention back to Linno, she smiles awkwardly. "Sorry, I guess I'll have to sit back and watch. Oh! Name's Nina, Nina Brightspark," the gnome adds, offering her hand. "And the cat is Inky, my best friend. I think I'm her best friend too, even if she doesn't always act like it."
"And um...yeah, is it okay if we bed down here tonight? I'm not sure if we could all make it back to town before it gets dark," Nina remarks, nodding at Hanlin's question.

"Only a fool would gallivant around at night out in these parts. Of course, you're welcome to spend the night." Linno Brethun gives his bodyguard a poke in the ribs. "No pillow fights, Iselle. And stop giving the priest the eye. He's a man of god, after all."
"Probably celibate, anyway," the dwarf mutters under his breath.
Hanlin
|
"Definitely NOT celibate than you very much. Without children how would Iomedae continue to fight the hordes of darkness from the layers of hell and beyond?" He smiles at Iselle.

Lord Braggett's eyes flit back and forth between Iselle and Hanlin, wondering if love can bloom, even on a battlefield. Finally, he clears his throat and announces, "I shall lend an expert hand in your quest to secure your home from neferious interlopers. Hand me a flask, and you can be assured they will, indeed, get off your lawn with the utmost haste." He then spends a good deal of time trying to balance a flask on a door frame, with little success. "Have you considered using a lock, sir?"

That worked splendidly." He nods as Erlathan rushes over to help. "Ah, no need for concern my friend. 'tis just a scratch! I obviously intended to trigger the trap." He gives Erlathan a confident smile. "You see, when constructing traps, you must check for every conceivable circumstance. Now we know that even a clumsy thief tumbling from the premises will not escape the fire. Yes, that should keep the blighters at bay." Trying his best to suppress a shiver as the infernal magic does its job, Braggett bows gratefully. "Thank you for your assistance sir, but if you will excuse me, I have some pressing matters to attend to." He then strides off, still blushing bright, to consult privately with Kibble.

Linno spends half the night setting all the traps himself. He's a little grouchy the next morning, but he's relieved to put his erstwhile career as a farmer behind him.
The party and its train of homesteaders set out along the Path Road for the Border Ranch. The hours on the dusty trail pass without incident.
---
The ranch is little more than a wooden farmhouse, a barn, and a wide, craggy pasture for grazing cattle.
According to the loquacious Grev, this horse-breeding family’s land dates back to when the border of the Hold of Belkzen reached much farther to the west. This holding was originally called Morter Ranch, but so many people from Arwyll Stead mistakenly called the place 'Border Ranch' that the moniker stuck.
The leader of the Morter family, a middle-aged female human named Ellia, runs the ranch with the help of her lame husband, Clyde and his brother, Feb. Ellia and Clyde have three children together—two older girls and a young boy—and are more than willing to bring their family to safety behind Arwyll Stead’s walls.
While the Morters gather their things and prepare to leave their home, everybody but Kibble notices a small band of orcs across the stone bridge, skulking behind a hillock. The orcs spring over the hill and head across the bridge to attack.
The orcs are wearing studded leather armor and carry falchions and javelins. Their leader is wearing masterwork hide armor and armed with a masterwork spear. Their war cry chills the blood.
The children scream, and the adults reach for what weapons they have. Grev bellows, "We'll set up a perimeter around these good folk. You Pathfinders, give 'em hell!"

Hanlin looks to Vegazi as the other orcs converse "If they say anything important please let us know Vegazi." Hanlin stands and waits for the battlefield to be less muddled before making his move.
Curious how Nina's action resolves before I move up, seems the orcs are in a heap of trouble already.
Bishop 'The Dark Augur'
|
Bishop continues his dance with the orc leader feinting a few strikes with the dagger in his right hand trying to get the orc to drop her guard. It is on the third feint where he anticipates an opening and pushes forward extending more than he had previously. His right hand goes low while quickly turning the blade in his left overhead. The manuver works just as anticipated as the blade sinks deep into the orc leader's shoulder blade.

Lord Braggett Fizzlebotham IV

Braggett is using a flail, so no AoO for him.
Lord Braggett is momentarily lost for words as he watches the intricate dance unfold between Bishop and the orc leader, his appreciation for the man's skills growing with every feint. However, he suddenly remembers that there is a crowd watching, and that he has a reputation to maintain. "For Arwyll!" He bellows, shaking himself out of it. He whirls his flail above his head and, in an attempt to mop up the remaining foes in the most awe inspiring display of prowess, charges.

Nina and Inky send the purple orc warrior to the happy hunting grounds.
Bishop fakes on way and slashes another, opening up the sergeant's abdomen and spilling her guts. Erlathan makes certain she'll never rise again.
Lord Braggett and Sir Kibble trot up to the sole surviving orc and give it the ole clobber and slobber. The wolf flips the orc onto his backside.
Vegazi drops her bow and advances on the yellow orc warrior, drawing her short sword and trying to subdue the prone orc.
Attack, Lion's Call, bless, nonlethal; Damage: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 91d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Lion's Call: All allies within 60' gain a competence bonus on their saving throws against fear equal to his Charisma modifier and a +1 competence bonus on attack rolls for three rounds.

Yellow Orc (-16)
Hanlin, you're up!
Bishop 'The Dark Augur'

"Tell the orc to yield Vegazi. You are right knowing what the enemy is up to or at least where will go further than slaying all of them."
Hanlin

Hanlin nods at the Orc's words "I guess I'll have to save that Iomedae ass kicking for later then, you guys are too damn quick." He sheathes his sword and walks forward.
Erlathan
|
"Hanlin, I believe the common folk refer to your kind as a 'slacker', if you will," the elf jokes, with air quotes and all.
GM Lorenzo

Vegazi tries to break through the ferocity of the orc's blood lust. "Yield, warrior, and you will live to fight another day."
Intimidate: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Assessing the hopelessness of his situation, and without his sergeant shrieking in his ear, the orc lowers his weapons.
"Urnok was our sergeant. She was one of the more outspoken leaders among the Hell's Fury tribe. Our leader, Kelseph, left the tribe’s holdings to follow her 'visions' in the Hungry Mountains and bring back greater power for the tribe. So she said, anyways."
"Urnok didn't believe Kelseph’s claims. Urnok thought the chieftain has gone into human lands to consort with the filthy 'thin-skins' once again."
"Our tribe has been shamed by Kelseph and her 'infernal daughters.' Urnok sought to reclaim power over the Hell's Fury tribe."
"If you fear an orc attack from the Hell’s Fury tribe on Lastwall turf, then your best bet at dismantling the tribe’s power structure is by taking out Kelseph."
Nina Brightspark
|
"That fits everything else we've learned so far, right?" Nina asks, looking at the rest of the group. "Definitely some discontent in the ranks. But that's a good thing - divide and conquer and all that jazz."
"Did Kelseph say what sort of visions she'd been having?" the little gnome then asks by way of Vegazi translating.
GM Lorenzo
|
Vegazi translates. "'Nope.'"
The ranger asks everyone, "What do you wish to do with the orc?"
Hanlin
|
Hanlin listens intently as Vegazi translates the orc's story. "I find it hard to believe orcs living this close to human lands don't speak or at least understand the common tongue..." He watches for a reaction to test his theory. Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
"At any rate, I say we strip him of his equipment and release him. Have him take back a token from his dead commander to the tribe, along with a message to stay away from these lands and its people."

"I concur! If this fellow has an issue with Kelseph, and Lady Brightspark's theory is correct, then sending him back can only aid us in our task." Lord Braggett says, nodding confidently, "At the very least, we will have sent the tribe a stark warning that we are not to be trifled with." He then points his flail at the orc and barks the order. "Now, Sir! Divest yourself of the instruments of war and spread the word of how soundly you were defeated by the Knights of Arwyll Stead." Kibble adds a little emphasis with a bark of his own.
Nina Brightspark

"Seems like a good idea to me," Nina agrees. "Especially since he surrendered when we gave him the chance!"
