I just have to say that that was the scariest sight I have ever seen in a PFS game. I faced a single tiger in a home game once, and it ate my super tough martial character before I even got a chance to strike back, so when I saw four lions charging at us, I thought we were goners for sure. :)

![]() |

You and Hanlin both. Anything with pounce and grab is going to wipe out PCs!

![]() |

Working today, so I will catch up on posts later. Also the new font is rather headache-inducing so that may slow me down a bit too until they fix it.

![]() |

The random encounters can be brutal in this module. This one was 1d4 lions, and I rolled a 4. I think we handled the situation well.
@Bishop: Re UMD, you get a +2 bonus on your check if you've successfully activated the item in the past. Does your +11 include that? If not, then the '19' UMD on your wand of CLW would succeed.
My handling of the botted mage armor was technically incorrect, lowering the DC rather than adding the bonus to the roll. The result would have been the same, though.

![]() |

oh snap I didn't know that. I missed that part of the description! thanks GM Lorenzo! The 11 is my skill mod since I gained a level. Really nice to know.

![]() |

Folks, some of your information has changed since you leveled up after Chapter 1. Please update Slide 2, including Day Job rolls for Chapter 2.

![]() |

Craft: Carpentry: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Currently on mobile so I'll update the slide later :)

![]() |

Looks like everybody's ready to open the door and try to shoot the eagle. Tomorrow morning, I'll roll initiative, and we'll see how the plan comes together.

![]() |

Sorry, I've been really busy today, but I'll have a post up soon.

Swarm Traits has some language that can seem confusing.
In order to attack, it moves into an opponent's space, which provokes an attack of opportunity. It can occupy the same space as a creature of any size, since it crawls all over its prey. A swarm can move through squares occupied by enemies and vice versa without impediment, although the swarm provokes an attack of opportunity if it does so.
However, it also includes this language.
Swarms do not threaten creatures, and do not make attacks of opportunity with their swarm attack.
I think this applies when adjacent to or moving through squares adjacent to the swarm, not when moving through a swarm.
There might be further language or rulings that apply to this particular situation. If you can point me to it, I'll be happy to retcon things.

![]() |

Fair enough. I'm not sure I can find any other language that can clear things up, and if that's the way you see it then that's fine by me. It's the writing of the swarm attack that got me.
Swarm Attack: Creatures with the swarm subtype don't make standard melee attacks. Instead, they deal automatic damage to any creature whose space they occupy at the end of their move, with no attack roll needed.
So I just always thought that if a swarm covered you in its turn it would cause damage, but you'd be able to walk out of danger without getting hurt on your turn (otherwise they essentially have two automatic hits against you.) And if that were true, then by extension, I'd be able to completely run through a swarm on purpose without getting hurt.
I am, however, nowhere near as experienced as the rest of you, and now I know to be extra careful when dealing with swarms in the future. :)

![]() |

Yep, that language is there, too. I also debated about having them attack at the end of their double move, entering the cottage and the squares occupied by the party. While technically that seems legit, I thought that seemed to defy common sense, too, granting them a double move and an attack.
I'm sure we can find lots of smart, experienced people with strong opinions on all sides of this issue. (As is often the case. The boards are full of such 'discussions,' often very heated.) If you'd prefer to have done something else, please go ahead.
I just exercised what I thought was my best judgment.
In fairness to you, you did pose the question before you acted, so I have absolutely no problem with you modifying any or all of your actions this round.

![]() |

No, no, I'm fine with keeping things as they are. It's absolutely something that Braggett would attempt (he has been known to deliberately run into traps in order to make them safe for others,) and his luck was bound to run out sooner or later. I mean, I was only one roll short from pulling it off anyway. :)

![]() |

Shieldbug, can you give me a simple primer on how to draw movement lines the way you did to indicate Lord Braggett's and Sir Kibble's movement, including the large dot from where the gnome would have tossed the alchemist's fire?
I haven't cracked the code on that yet, and it would be very useful to know how to do that.

![]() |

I agree, very nice and helpful. Inquiring minds want to know.

Sure thing! Just click the little down arrow next to the line tool, select 'Polyline,' and then draw the path of movement. Once the path has been drawn, just change the colour, make it dotty using the 'Border dash' button, and add an arrow by clicking on the 'Line end' button. The extra large dot was just a plain circle I added separately after I drew the path. Finally, I usually send the line as far down the drawing order as possible (by pressing Ctrl+Down arrow) so that it doesn't interfere with other players.

![]() |

Awesome thanks. That's very nice for showing movement for those oh so tricky traps and aoo moments.

![]() |

Incredibly easy. Thanks so much for that tip.
Next request: AoE templates for spells, channels, etc. I struggle to get them to accurately fit the varied scaled maps on the slides. Any tips for handling that?

![]() |

I could use the same method you described with the 'polyline' tool. Is there an easier option?

• create coloured squares sized for the map grid.
• group together and change the gradient of squares to show area of effect.
As always send the grouped object to the back. this is how I've worked with it in the past and it works well. I also have used the shape tool too.

I've been doing a little experimenting, and I might have something that might work. You can use the 'polyline' tool to draw standard templates like you have on the last slide, and group a circle in the centre of each one. Then when you need one, place the template with the little circle on a grid cross section (you can use Shift+Arrow Keys for fine placement) and scale it while holding down Ctrl+Shift keys. That will keep the aspect ratio and scale around the centre. It seems to work, except that the snapping to other elements (which is usually so handy) makes things a little tricky sometimes.
Edit: Ninja'ed.

![]() |

Erlathan, unless I missed my count, the max range of your summons should put it right where you've indicated on the map.

![]() |

Sounds good to me.
I thought, perhaps incorrectly, that the summoned creature's starting location had to be within LoS of the caster. I therefore placed Cumulus just outside the door, and had her fly (100 ft with perfect maneuverability) to the eagle.

*takes note re: spell templates and lines on the map*
Thanks Mr. Bug! :)

![]() |

Apologies for the delays; went to bed sick Wednesday night after work and spent more or less all of yesterday in bed. Feeling better now though, thankfully.

![]() |

Ditto!

![]() |

If I were to direct Kibble to attack apparent foes in the next round, since Braggett cannot point to a target, would I randomly determine who Kibble attacks, or just go for the closest enemy?

![]() |

You heard woman's voice ordering "Umber" to defend her and the sounds of a grunting animal. You could make a Perception check to ID their position, point in their direction, and command Kibble to attack one of them.

![]() |

Will do. Thanks. :)

![]() |

Looks like I ninja'ed you, Bishop. Sorry about that. Just wanted to keep us moving.

![]() |

Reminder: After suffering a raven swarm's eye-rake, it's a DC11 Heal check to remove this form of blindness.

![]() |

Can a PC make that check herself, or does another PC have to make it for them?

![]() |

There's nothing in the rules prohibiting self-aid. I'm imagining this as stopping the blood from running into your eyes.

![]() |

I'm not ignoring everyone's posts today; I'm just waiting on Bishop's Round 4 post before summing up the actions in Round 5 and advancing the action.
I'll bot Bishop in the morning, if we don't see a post tonight. We want to give him a chance to act.
I've seen other GMs use the 'wrap-around' rounds tracking system. I wanted to try it out and see if that helped maintain a nice, brisk pace. Having tried it, I find it's often confusing me (and maybe some of you, too).
I'm going to go back to the one-round-at-a-time method. Slower but clearer. Please be patient.

![]() |

No worries, GM. I like the wrap-around method but I can see how it can be confusing, especially when there's a lot going on. Doing just one round at a time is fine for me :)
Really, as long as it's not the strict 'you must post in initiative order' method, I'm good. Otherwise, well....
Oh and thanks for the reminder about the Heal check thingy - totally forgot!

![]() |

Hope your son's okay, Bishop. Will keep him and you in my prayers.

![]() |

Eek, I hope your son gets better soon Bishop!

![]() |

I hope it isn't anything too serious. Good luck to you both.

![]() |

Thanks everyone. My son is doing much better although the reason for his abdominal pains has been labelled with the dreaded catchall word for something unexplained: VIRUS.
GM Lorenzo great rolls thanks for botting me. I will make a post within an hour for Bishop's actions.

![]() |

Welcome back. Glad to hear he's improved.

![]() |

That's great news!

![]() |

Glad your son is on the mend!

![]() |

Please take another look at the three slides of loot/treasure. The items highlighted in yellow remain unclaimed so far.
Please let me know if you wish to present any of the items to Vegazi.

![]() |

Done. :)
I've changed my mind, and decided that the potion bears endurance probably wouldn't hurt. Also Braggett presents Ilka's feather necklace to Vegazi to go with the other two she has.

![]() |

Hanlin grabbed up the wand of CLW. Can anyone else use it? I know Bishop can with UMD.
Also, the UnID tokens, I believe we found those before leveling so some people may have another chance to ID them? Not sure on the UnID'd wand in the list.
