Vincent Blackwood |
"Conjuration? Like, it might summon a powerful foe?" Vincent cracks his knuckles and re-draws his sword. "I like the sound of that. He walks into the room and thrusts his sword at the exact center of the room, seeing if an enemy decides to coalesce around the blade.
If nothing happens, he shrugs and looks at the next room.
Garedon |
"... Or, perhaps its reflective surfaces would, reflecting upon either other, create an infinite series of ever-smaller copies of the original person..." Garedon continues, initially missing Vincent's moves towards the room. "Wait! The protective magics!" Garedon calls out, possibly too late.
GM Kyshkumen |
Vincent doesn't notice it a first but the longer he stands in the room the stronger a deep vibration in the walls gets. After about 15 seconds the vibrations reach a crescendo.
Please post in spoilers since Vincent can no longer hear you.
Garedon |
While first watching the building vibration and then considering the possibilities, Garedon proceeds to cast Guidance from his wayfinder, then Resistance, and palms his wands of magic missiles and shield before stepping into the chamber after Victor.
"You may wish to wait for us here," Garedon advises.
"In for an copper penny, in for a gold measure."
тυιcн |
"Damnable fool," she mutters as he presumably also vanishes.
Vincent Blackwood |
Garedon |
"Hmm. Interesting. I suppose that trying the door would be the next logical step."
GM Kyshkumen |
The door behind the party opens and there stand Vincent and Garedon. The room behind them is identical to the room the party was experimenting with.
The party is reunited so no need for spoilers, thanks for playing along.
Vyk Tyr |
"Garedon! Ah, come on! We don't even know if those two got teleported to the same place!" Vyk said while growling not unlike a lion.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Vyk then does a double take as Garedon and Vincent arrive.
"Oh, thank the Lucky Drunk, you two are all right."
Garedon |
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
"Hmm. I may be better than 'all right' - I may well be interesting."
Vincent Blackwood |
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Vincent looks over at Garedon, looks down at his hands and swings his sword a couple times experimentally. He glances back at the center of the room before shrugging and re-joining the others. "That works for me. I've always felt that lefties had an advantage in a sword fight. Easier to bypass most shields." He doesn't bother to explain what he's talking about to the others. "To the next room?"
Miko Teppen |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Miko shrugs, as she doesn't notice anything different about Garedon
Well, as long as your brain is still in the same place. And by the sound of it, it is.
Yup, left-brained all the way.
тυιcн |
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Har!
"What th..."
Tuich peers past the two into the other room. "Well that's pretty useless. Why would anyone set up permanent teleportation into a room right across the hall when they could just walk through the doors!"
She shakes her head in confused amazement. "But you two are alright, that's the main thing. Vincent, that was a foolish thing you did. And Garedon even foolisher!"
Garedon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Garedon considers the change: mundane and supernatural; simple and enormous.
"I have often been told that 'my heart is in the right place', which was always a mysterious observation for people to make: By what means did they come by this information? Still, now I am not so sure what difference it makes, insofar as each organ maintains its position and function relative to each connecting organ and tissue."
"Interestingly, I feel mentally no different. Hmm. Lausu naht esnes erom yna ekam siht seod? On? Hmm. I wonder if I will be able to prepare spells? Will magical inscriptions or, indeed, runes and holy symbols, work as expected?"
"Now, am I properly considered an opposite, obverse, reverse, inverse, converse, or, indeed, something perverse, like a doppleganger? ... Upon reflection, I believe that I may be a reflection."
(Some things do not change.)
тυιcн |
Tuich looks at Garedon quizzically. "What are you going on about now? More so than usual, I mean."
Miko Teppen |
I realise, in retrospect, that I could have been a little clearer to the rest of the party there. Perhaps I should have just pointed.
--Miko Teppen, personal notes
Facing the hallway westward, Miko is looking somewhat confused:
So do we turn left, right for Garedon, there, or should we turn right, left for Garedon? If I'm left, left is where the dark creature right us. I'd suggest we go right. You are in your left if you want to disagree, but I think it would be best that we right no stone unturned, left?
Garedon |
Garedon continues various tests of his new condition, sticking a thumb out and blinking with first one eye and then another. "It is, in the end, a simple matter: The left aspect of my person has become my right, and the right my left, correspondingly. Essentially, Vincent and I have become our mirror images."[b]
[b]"Um... Right, Miko, ri- 'correct', I think. Perhaps we should talk about the 'dextrous' and the 'sinistral', just so that everyone in understandable to everyone else, using the original point of references-- Or perhaps we should just point."
"To the great pit and beyond or back towards where we entered the ossuary complex?"
Miko Teppen |
Are you cracking jokes now? A dextrous rogue and a sinister priest walk into a bar?
Perhaps there's a way to access the statues on the way south...
As per my unclear description above, Miko prefers going south.
Vincent Blackwood |
Vincent's name is inscribed on the bottom of his Wayfinder. He examines it to see if the writing became reversed. If he can still read his name, he calls one of the others (other than Garedon) over to make sure that it still looks right to them too. "I'd hate to discover that all of Garedon's scrolls are unreadable now," he explains.
If everything is fine, he agrees with going south down the hallway.
GM Kyshkumen |
The group comes to an interection and looking to the west it appears the passage turns and continues south. To the east they see a suit of elaborate lacquered armor standing sentinel against the far eastern wall of the octagonal chamber. Silver chains attached to the armor's neck and chest run across the floor of the room, their ends clutched in the bony hand of a skeleton sprawled on the floor ten feet away.
тυιcн |
"Speaking of 'sinister' -- and I wish you lot would let me in on the joke -- that looks ominous," Tuich says, tilting her head towards the suit of armor.
Vyk Tyr |
Vyk shrugs. And then fires off a blast of Disrupt Undead at the creature.
Knowledge Religion?
Disrupt Undead: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Garedon |
"It would be probably be the most prudent course of action to also target the suit of armor with your undead-disrupting ray, especially considering the non-expendable nature of the cantrip."
"This unusual pair seems possibly familiar to me. I shall consult a chapbook I have assembled regarding locally-relevant knowledge and lore. This shall only take a few moments as the information has been exceptionally well organized and indexed."
Knowledge (Local)?: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 2 + 2 = 27
Time, full actions: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Garedon |
I vaguely remembered that from somewhere. Still don't know what they are, lol. But, it may be just a bit of local oddness for GMs or some AP to develop.
Garedon conveys all that he knows about the Iridian Fold but, since that does not take a suitably large number of words, he begins to explain all that he - or, rather, "... noted scholars in the field ..." - doesn't know about Iridian Fold.
Vincent Blackwood |
At this point Vincent will shoot another Disrupt Undead ray at the armor, if Vyk has not done so already.
GM Kyshkumen |
Vyk fires a ray of energy at the armor causing it to jostle a little bit awaking the roaches that were living inside. Hundreds of them come pouring out of the armor forming a mass of filthy angry insects.
Garedon: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Vyk: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Tuich: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Garedon |
"Dermestid beetles? - very useful in reducing specimens to only their skeletons..." Garedon suggests, most unhelpfully.
Just a free action. :)
Vyk Tyr |
"Whoops!" Vyk declared with a self-deprecating chuckle.
"Pretty sure I got a wand for this kind of thing - somewhere. Just a moment--"
I'm not up, but if someone wants to take my Wand of Burning Hands (CL 3rd) with 4 charges, then feel free.
Miko Teppen |
I've got a song for this kind of thing. Miko says, seeing the mass of creeping, flying insects.
Gross, gross, gross
If you're seein' things runnin' through your head
Who you gonna call?
Move up and cast chord of shards (sonic damage, cone)
Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10 Multiply as needed
тυιcн |
Uh... "Gross-busters?"
And dagnabbit, my totally-unprepared-for-swarms cleric is dealing with a mass of centipedes in a Shadowlands game right now. :o(
A tiny "Eep!" escapes Tuich as she pulls a flask of Alchemist's Fire from her backpack. Oracle's Curse makes retrieving stored items a Standard Action; not sure if that would apply to pulling out a flask or not. If not, then she'll lob it at the bugs this round.
Attack (Alchemist's Fire, RTA, 2 range increments): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 3 - 2 = 15
Direct Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Vincent Blackwood |
Vincent moves into the room. "They're insects. They can't possibly be faster than me!" He readies an action to move 15' north and 10' east (squeezing in that half square) if the swarm enters his space.
I'm hedging on the swarm having bad enough maneuverability that it can't make the check to do a 180 to follow him. Or the check to turn 90 to get to Miko at that point either. DM, if this might spark a rules debate about whether I get to avoid swarm damage through readied actions, I can just toss some alchemist fire at the thing.
Vincent Blackwood |
That's fine. It at least will use up their movement and keep their attack to one person if they follow me. At the very least, it means they would use two diagonals to get to Miko, supposing they go for Vincent first. If they just beeline for the larger group of people, then at least I'm no longer there. I will keep my action as written.
GM Kyshkumen |
Vincent steps forward and gets ready to try and lead the roaches away. With a few gestures Miko creates the sound of a vicious musical chord with the power to scatter and kill many of the roaches. Tuich takes a moment rummaging through her pack before she triumphantly retrieves an alchemist fire. The remaining insects make their move against Vincent who leads them to a far corner of the room before they swarm over him taking tiny bites out of his flesh.

Vincent I need a DC 14 Fort save or you are nauseated next round. Bold is up!
Vincent Blackwood |
Damage minimized!
Fort Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
"Alright, I distracted them! Now let me get out of the way!"
On his turn next round, Vincent walks back to the other side of the room (where he moved originally) and pulls out an vial of alchemist's fire, already picking insects off of his clothes.
Technically my initiative is now right before the roaches because of my readied action going off, so if you want to avoid splashing Vincent, everyone will have to delay before acting.
Vyk Tyr |
Vyk moves to stand by Vincent, drawing a wand all the while. He said an activation word, and a plume of flame engulfed the swarm.
Burning Hands CL 3rd, Reflex Half (DC 11): 3d4 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) = 7
"Lovely," he said sarcastically, after sniffing the air.
Swarms are supposed to take 50% more damage from AOEs, so presumably it'd be 10 damage on a failed save, and 4 damage on a save.
