This looks like trouble. Vermin thinks to himself as he casts Barkskin on himself and moves to the side of the structure. Barkskin lasts 10 minutes/level, so 1 hour total. Also, you might want to place an icon for Sparky on the map.

GM Helaman |

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
I'll leave the other two where they are for now. Sparky can be added in a min
Vermin hears sometime... a sound of leather being slapped? Or slapping the air...
Then Sylph is attacked with an unearthly screech.
A demonic looking gargoyle almost appears out of no where (but having glided down from a nearby ornate building) in a charging swoop with its one of its claws.
1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 9 + 2 = 23
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Slyph 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Vermin 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Garen 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Valeros 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Myrielle 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Creature 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
The target number is 23 for perception to avoid surprise - if you do, you get a surprise round standard or move action

So, should we post out of turn, or wait until its our turn? Valeros is up and Vermin is next per my recognizing.

Apologies but it seems Roll20 will not allow me to access the map from a mobile browser.

You are allowed to charge in the surprise round. Its a special case. Also, some confusion here - Seems we are taking both our surprise round and the first round of combat, yes? At least the creature did. I am only now seeing the surprise round perception roll.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19 Vermin seems to be looking away from the creature.
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

I presume I could act in the surprise round if I could beat the Perception DC? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also That would have being my surprise round seeing that my initative is fantastic as usual. lol (I'm last again)
If I can act in surprise round than I charge else I move, I'm using a reach weapon in case you didn't know. I'll roll my knowledges

After the surprise round Vermin sicks Sparky on the thing as he casts Shillelagh on his club and closes into the flank with his pet.

Surprise Round
Slyph cries out in alarm and with a flick of his wrist an ornate flask almost appears in his hand. He downs the liquid within with one swift gulp.
Immediately he convulses once and nearly doubles over as his body is wracked with muscle spasms. His skin takes on a leathery appearance and he seems leaner with a cruel glint in his eyes.

![]() |

Round 1
His hair is longer, darker and thinner, his face is gaunt and scarred, as he straitens he stands nearly a foot taller, his clothes while too small for his new size hang limply on his lithe frame.
"You gunna regret that."
Slyph takes a quick step back from the creature, give it a smile and lobs a bomb at it.
Concussive Bomb vs Touch: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 173d4 + 5 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) + 5 = 12 Sonic damage, DC 18 Fort or target is deafened 1 Min. I exclude any space occupied by my allies using Precise Bombs of course.
He pulls another vial from his belt and bites at the cork sealing it.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Myrielle, caught completely off-guard by the creature, hesitates as she takes a moment to gather her bearings. For the time being, she holds back to let the others engage the creature. Hopefully they would be able to dispatch it with little in the way of assistance from her.
Holding for now, I guess.

GM Helaman |

Surprise round
The dwarf seems to be moving even before the creature can land its blow and arrives in a charge of his own just after it strikes the Alchemist.
His blow, however, glances off the creatures hide.
Its a Monsterous Humanoid - I believe Humanoids are Know: Local but in this case? Know: Planes may apply
Round 1
Valeros closes with the creature with the intent of smiting it down...
His attack, swung hard hits the creature but slides off without biting, the warrior not turning the edge in time.
Valeros couldn't position his warrior so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and moved him within 6 sq's to allow the attack
Myrielle, you can go if you wish.
Finally the transformed alchemist hits the creature more or less in the face with a bomb. Fort Save 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14... leaving it shaking its head as it roars.

Can confirm, Knowledge Nature. Don't forget Sparky and his attack.

GM Helaman |

Sparky's claws scrapes through the thick hide of the creature and draws black blood.
Result of 12. Its a big a*$# monster. Result of 27. This is a Gargolye. Magic weapons are needed to get past the stony hide of the creature for best effect. This creature appears to be a hybrid of gargolye and something demonic. It moves faster than you'd expect and so far has been able to avoid some near hits

![]() |

Slyph ducks his head and darts off quickly towards the building, the better to keep his friends out of the way of his bombs. He drinks the vial in his hand and the wounds the creature left on him begin to knit themselves together.

The nimble reptile dodges about as the creature focuses its attacks agains him and remains unhurt. Vermin, flanking with his animal friend, shakes off the shield (move action) and swing the now enchanted club at the creature in both hands, power attacking. You ain't so tough when you have ta stand and fight now are ya?

GM Helaman |

Garens blow just seems to not hit with its full effect as the creature moves itself just enough to avoid the majority of the blow, instead moving in and taking the blow from the haft. Close but not close enough... but unfortunately for it, moving it into a monster hit from Valeros... which drops its guts to the floor, and it a second after.
Nice one all.

Vermin stoops to examine the monstrosity and to pick up his shield. His animal companion sniffs at the dead creature and nips at its leg. No, do not eat it Sparky. He warns. I fear its not a natural creature but can't place it. I sense a taint from some nether place.

Valeros flicks the entrails off the end of his sword and stoops down to pick up his shortblade. He kicks the gargoyle corpse. "So this is what's been killing the Sarenites? I wonder why? Just a grudge?"

Often these creatures are summoned. This one seems more, well, local. Vermin kicks it lightly to make his point. Lets explore the rune. These things are good at hiding in rocks and old structures I think.

![]() |

Ew.
Having hovered in the background for the duration of the fight, Myrielle finally stepped forward to join the others as combat concluded. "Well. That seemed easy enough for you lot." She shot the mutated elf a look of poorly-veiled distaste. "I suppose you would require more healing...?"

GM Helaman |

lol - nice on Myr. Map updated. Just post whatever healing takes place
The creature doesn't vanish like most conjurations - it seems to be native to this plane.
The shrine, after careful exploration seems empty. The yard has 3 graves in it, the markers show the graves as being for Father Vosten and his two acolytes. Curiously the graves show signs of recent excavation and refilling.
Near the back of the shrine, not far from the graves, lies an overgrown door in the side of the ruined building. This stout door is in excellent condition, and is also locked.

![]() |

Slyph grunts at Myrielle. "I wouldn't mind a bit." His disfigured form still bares signs of the vicious attack.

Vermin moves to examine both the door and the area in front of it for tracks.

I admit I'm looking at it. Can I take 20 with the lock with guidance? It'll give me a 25.

![]() |

Waiting for someone to open the door.Vermin offered to bust it, but that offer was not initially accepted.

![]() |

"Much. You have my thanks. Oh Garen, mind if I take a shot at it?
Slyph moves to the locked door and takes his time to work on the lock. His new form is certainly more nimble and quickly goes to work at the intricate device.
Taking 20 gives me a 35 disable device.
