GM Hama's Blade of Darkness

Game Master Hama

Sovereign Court

First off, this is a homebrew campaig, that i based on a hack'n'slash video game. I have changed some stuff and fluff to better suit me.
There will be combat, and there will be roleplay opportunities.

I need four to five players tops, they can be anything they want, as i will tailor encounters to fit them (some will not be easily beatable mind).

If you want to play, make an alias, and create a character. I will supply the background of the world in broad strokes and give several cultures from which your characters can hail from.

For now, these are the pointers:

- Point buy (i swore i would never do this, but it is only fair on a messageboard) will be 20.

- You get average starting gold.

- You can use any traits provided in pathfinder rulebooks that are not AP specific. 2 traits can be chosen. I will give a choice of several traits tomorrow, that will be world-related.

- All classes, alternate classes and archetypes from the Core rulebook, APG, UM and UC are permitted, with the exception of the anti-paladin and the gunslinger.

- Races allowed: Human, Elf, Half-Elf, Dwarf and Half-orc. (it will be explained why.

You start at level 1.

Players will be chosen by Gm fiat :D Actually i am still thinking on just picking at random ( the fairest option) or characters which suit the game best, or simply the best backstory. I will decide on this.

The game will begin play on the first of october at 24:00 CET.

Because of the constraints of my scegule, i will be able to post 2-3 times a day tops, (frequency of posts may increase during the weekends)

Well, there's that for now, and hope i get somebody willing to play.

Can you elaborate a little more ?
I would like a little more information on the world before creating a character

Sovereign Court

Ok, it seems that i have time now.

Well, i am in the process of drawing the world map, and when i do, i will photograph it and post it here. For now, some info about the world.

It is a single continent divided almost wholly by a huge mountain massive. Eastern side, which is bigger is inhabited by humans, dwarves and a very small number of elves, and an even smaller number of half-orcs.

Western side, which is smaller, is inhabited by monsters.

The story of the world goes that elves first lived on the western part of the continent, turning it into a beautiful land of sublime nature and glittering cities. Elves were also aloof and thought themselves superior to all other races. They dabbled in magics not meant for mortals to meddle with, and the result tore open a huge rift, which paved the way for the army of darkness to come pouring out and slaughtering everything in their path. First few days, the elves reeled from the onslaught, but then, with the leadership of their king, which was a paladin of Ianna (goddes of the moon), they formed a battle line and halted their progress, making a bloody stand. But the forces of darkness came in waves from the rift, and the king knew that something had to be done. Not only elven lands, but all the world was in danger from this threat. So, the king sent for help, to human and dwarven lands. Humans and dwarves decided not to help them and entrenched themselves in the only pass big enough to let an army pass through.
Elven king, who didn't know that, chose a small force with which to try and reach the rift, and attempt to seal it, although the greatest minds in his kingdom couldn't fathom how.
While they rested on the night before they made the attempt to reach the rift, the goddes Ianna came to him in a dream, and offered to him a beam of pure moonlight, with whitch to seal the rift. When the king awoke, clutched in his left hand was a sword, made of pure silver, but stronger then steel. He knew then that his prayers were answered.
On that day, while they reached the rift, armies of darkness attacked the remains of his forces and slaughtered them, only to be stopped by the combined human and dwarf efforts in the pass. Only a few elves remained from the once great empire.
King and his retainers gave their lives, but in the end the king was able to seal the rift by plunging the sword of Ianna into the heart of the elf who opened the rift and now served as the conduit. The rift was sealed and the sword dissapeared. The armies of darkness were left leaderless, but they were not idle, turning the western part of the continent into a desolate wasteland, similar to the world from whence they came.
A few remaining elves were accepted into the humand lands, to live in enclaves if they chose so, and humans took upon themselves to guard the pass of skulls as it came to be called, bu erecting a mighty fortress in the place of the battle.

Humans:

As a human, a character can hail from almost any part of the human realm, which is comprised of four regions. Armina, Kassar, Surdok and Pelona.

Armina region is the region nearest to the pass of skulls, and thus not a very happy place to live, with every able bodied firstborn drafted into the army. There are two fortresses in the Armina region, one is the fortress Tabriz, the one defending the pass of skulls and the other is Tel Halaf, the seat of the marshal general of the army and the seat of the Knights of Armina. People live decentralized, in small farming communities, and there are several dwarven mines in the region.

Kassar region is the northernmost of the regions, comprised mostly of mountains and taigas. Barbarians of this region are sturdy, tough folk who live their lives on the move, having a permanent residence only during winter months, in their sacred city. They are highly spiritual and wise, though not very learned folk. They have a rich history that is mostly verbal, although there is talk of records being kept.

Surdok is the southernmost region, a little isolated from the rest by a desert in it's northern part, it is a land of strange folk and even stranger food. They live i a huge city, that in it's center always has a many-tiered pyramid in which the current ruler resides.

Pelona is the easternmost region, untouched by war or horrors, it is a pleasant place to live in. There are two big cities, Borena and Chemire. Borena is a cosmopolitan center of the region, having a giant university and sporting festivals for musicians painter and having a very well visited philosophical debate days. Chemire is the religious capital of the region, giving itself up to worship of Ahura, the sun god.

Dwarves live everywhere in the human regions, in mines and open excavations. But they have two great cities, Grognr, the dwarven capital, and enormous cave city, built inside of a dead volcano, and Ulftar, a city built in a great river valley rich with clay.

Elves are few in number still, living in enclaves throughout the human lands and often among humans. They loathe what they have become, but accept their new place in the world, if somewhat grudgingly.

Half-orcs When orcs raid the human lands, sometimes they use passes not known by human defenders, and thus get to attack villages closest to the mountains. Unfortunately, in such instances, rape is a common occurence, and the result is half-orcs. Hated by everyone for what they represent, and considered as useless by orcs, half-orcs struggle to find their place in the world, usually giving themselves up to lives of adventuring to prove their worth.

Count me in. I have two characters that could be good for this: a fighter and a magus. As soon as you post some information about the setting, I will make my choice and come up with a relevant background.

I submit Narnel for your consideration. I will change the background tomorrow to match the world-build.

Dotting for now. I'll be back later with a concept.

@ Pixel Cube: I have updated Narnel's background and profile to be consistent with the homebrew World. Please review and let me know if any revisions are required.

@ Hama: Sorry that last post was for you. Naenel is ready for review.

Working on stats now - but my concept is a half-orc spirit totem barbarian playing on the the theme that barbarians from the Kassar region are highly spiritual and wise.

Is this character concept ok? I would change background to match your world but no point in putting in character if you don't like him lol

Magnus Wolfgang (most likely Arminian)

Paladin of Ragathiel Empyreal Knight and would repick the kingmaker trait unless you think its ok

Thanks im really trying to find a place for this character

Also plan is to take leadership feat but only to get a mount that ok?

Nifty idea. Dotting for when I am not at work.

I decided to go with the fighter, here's his sheet and background.

Background:

A veteran of war from the northern regions of Armina, Malhasturian is the second born of a small family of farmers that lives near the borders with Kassar. Life is harsh up there, and the war made things worse. When his older brother Tellrah was sent to fight, he decided to join him even if that would mean leave his family alone: risking your life to save the land is better than growing turnips.

During the war, he fought alongside dwarves and people from Kassar, and he learned to respect their prowess in battle. He is usually suspicious about the people from Surdok and Pelona, as he never considered them of too much use. He really doesn't have much of an opinion about elves and halforcs.

At the end of the war, he went back home, expecting his family to have disappeared. They were alright, but the lands nearby had been scorched by the fires of war, and all their possessions were lost. His brother wasn't lucky enough: an arrow killed him during a battle. Seeing that there was nothing for him at home anymore, Malhasturian turned into a soldier of fortune, travelling along the realm, living in taverns, trying to find some work.

Malhasturian (often called Mal the Red due to his hair colour and his bloodied past) is tall and muscular. He wears an armored red kilt over the armor, as it is the fashion of the family clans of the north of Armina. He is ruthless in battle, trying to kill his opponent as fast as he can. He is not very talkative, and when confronted with a new situation he prefers to stay silent before deciding what needs to be done.

Submitting Phagin Harwood for consideration. I'm in process of modifying the background to fit the homebrew. One question I had was how far removed are we from the time of the Last battle? I'm essencially asking if young elves would remember the elven homeland (within the last 100 years) or if they would have only grown up in the human lands (more than 100 years ago)? And would their parents have been involved in the war or not?

Thanks, sounds like a great setting.

It's ok. Works for my campaign. Background is fine too, and you can keep the campaign trait.

@Narnel

The only problem i am having with your character is the CN alignment. The campaign is sorta heroic, but if you can work with that, i will be OK with it.

Mal the red:

Character concept, and background are ok.

@Tordek:

Concept seems fine, will see about crunch and backstory.

@Ganny, does that mean that you have a character for me to consider?

@Hama: Really not a problem, I have changed him to Chaotic Good for the sake of more heroic tendencies. It still fits his background. Excellent Homebrew setting. I would echo Phagin's question. How far removed in years are we from the last battle at the Rift when the elves were decimated? If it is within narnel's ken, then I will slightly modify the background to work it in. I assumed, possibly incorrectly, that we were pretty far removed.

@ Hama I would ask what sort of Gods are there in the land I saw the Sun God reference I know making own pantheon is a pain but just name and domain would be great just so I can fit Magnus more fully if I am chosen :)

I noticed that Phagin and Narnel are similar (Elf Rogue) yet not the same (Sniper vs Con Man/Burgler). If these are too close, I would submit another character. I've been thinking about a Dwarven Inquisitor if that would work better. It might take me a day or two to finish. If so I would have the same question as Magnus about the Gods.

I am very interested looking to either be Half-Orc Armored Hulk Barbarian with CG alignment or probably a fighter, most likely either human, dwarf or half-orc, also NG or CG. :)

Backstory:

Born into a world of disapproval, Khaod was from the time he could walk despised for his grotesque appearance and unnatural strength. However, his heart was as noble as any knights, and for every sneer he received he did his utmost to prove his worth, both as a person as well as a valuable member of the small Kassaran village he lived in. His early life was still not a happy one despite his good nature, only his mother seeing the good in him, but he stoically persevered. Eventually however, the jibes, threats and animosity all around him drove him away from his home and his mother and out into the wild world beyond.

It was not long before Khaod was picked up while wandering alone by a group of racially unbias Mercenaries. For the first time ever, besides the demeaning chores of looking after the camp and such, Khaod was not looked down upon for what he was, and he took great joy in proving his worth to the group, taking care of the sell-swords assorted weapons and armor with great care. Eventually, the leader of the Mercenaries took a shine to Khaod and agreed, after much jostling by his men to do so, to train him in the ways of war. He was surprised to find Khaod was a lot stronger than he had given him credit for, with a natural affinity to wear both armor and wield a heavy, two-handed weapon.

Khaod grew up quickly alongside the mercenaries, now joining them on assignments and testing his mettle in the thrill of combat. However, his companions noted that, in battle, Khaod would descend into an iron-clad whirlwind, roaring battle-cries and using his rage to power his already formidable strength into his blows. He, himself, saw battle as an outlet for his life in the village, channeling every exasperation into a strike, cleaving his weapon against his enemies in a silent contest to prove he was no monster, that he was not only half-orc he was half-human as well.

Eventually, Khaod left the company, now many years older and well-experienced in the ways of war. His companions wished him luck as he struck out on his own, knowing that the little half-orc boy they had found one night had finally become the warrior he had so desperately wanted to be.

I'd like to submit a Serpentine Sorcerer to the mix, planning to add Eldritch Heritage (Rakshasa) over time...

Why yes, I do happen to have an idea...for a healer (cause one hasn't been submitted yet).

Terrence Longarm (Neutral Human Cleric of Gozreh(Assuming Gozreh exists in this world)) hails from the region of Surdok, near the border Surdok shares with Armina. Born of a family of Clerics, and firstborn at that, he was raised and has taken on the role of Travelling Healer, even as his father did, whose father before him did, all the way down to the original Henry Longarm back long before the war. His gift, unique (at least, that Terrence knows of) in his family, is to be truly one that holds both life and death in his hands. Literally, in his case.

His right hand heals wounds, while his left hand causes them.

This has caused many a traveller from Kassar to scream obscenities where Terrence has been observed using his gift, exclaiming something to the effect of bringing evil into the world.

Other than that, Kassar has started to train to learn to use his body as a weapon, as you never know when you will be without a mace or even a dagger when monsters attack.

Crunch:

Character's motto: "This is my good hand. This is my bad hand. Which do you want to become the pimp hand I hit you with today?!"

Human Cleric of Gozreh.

Feats will be Selective Channeling and Versatile Channeling (So I can heal or harm whomever I wish, no problem).

Expect me to take ALOT of the channeling specific feats. Seriously, they are fun. Especially with smite channel...hehehehe.

Also, I will probably end up over the first five levels, to have three levels of monk by level 5 for Monastic Legacy.

Hopefully this gives you enough info for your decision. Expect an alias soon.

I'm planning Tampalasan to also be from Surdok. His stats are under my name. Here's a quick background:

Areas of Surdok contain a caste system, as mandated by religion. There are those, who, for whatever reason, fall out of the castes and are considered in the out-caste, a catchall for the undesirables who have no place in society. Tampalasan is a member of this out-caste.

His ancestors were an integral part of the protection for Surdok lands during the rift wars. Esteemed members of the Nagapaal Caste, they delved into mysteries of the rifts and carefully aligned the spirits of the family with the Nagas that were guardians of the caste. However, the family spirit was corrupted by another group of duplicitous fiends, representing Apep, the World Serpent. Many of his caste were turned into serpentine beasts, hunted down, and destroyed by his people.

Those that did not change into monsters were allowed to remain in Surdok, but the Nagapaal caste was forever stricken from the sacred rolls. They had become undesirable, out-caste. The shattered family continues to look for ways to overcome its heritage, but one of the first things they will do is destroy any family member that begins to show signs of the Serpent, be it Naga or Apep.

Tampalasan has discovered that the Serpent lives on in him, but he cannot let himself be executed by his family. Thus, he has left the southern lands, looking to find a way to reconcile his soul to the Serpent, and perhaps hide from his fate at home.

This is Tordek's Half-Orc barbarian, Tilurn. His stats can be found by clicking on his name.

Backstory:
Tilurn was the unfortunate result of one of the frequent orc raids into his small, mining village of Summeriron nestled into the Kassar mountain region. His mother, Cylilla, died giving birth, but her brother, Tsidor, a village elder, saw a glimmering aura surrounding the babe as he fought for life. The glimmering ceased, but Tsidor, intrigued, took Tilurn into his own family and raised the child as his own.

A constant reminder of the savagery of the orc attacks, half orcs were barely tolerated in the village. Tilurn learned from an early age that he needed to fight to survive. Often bullied by his human peers, Tilurn grew adept at fending them off with savage brutality. Tsidor, knowing that Tilurn needed to learn to live with humans in order to survive, taught young Tilurn how to control his rage tendencies and release it only when needed. Tsidor also nurtured the spiritual side of Tilurn. He sent the young boy on his own into the mountains to tend some goats. The boy spent countless hours watching the goats graze on the snippets of grass among craggy outcroppings. It was during these times that Tilurn felt most at peace, almost as if he was one with the mountain spirits.

By the time Tilurn turned 18, he had grown to a height of 6'2". He inherited his mother's flowing reddish brown hair, and kept it long and unbraided over his shoulders. Inspired by Tsidor's dream that Tilurn become a valuable member within the community, Tilurn has set out from Summeriron to seek his fortune and liberate his world from the dark creatures to the west.

I can adjust his backstory and add a deity as more information about your world is presented.

Sovereign Court

I have an idea for a elf or half elf alchemist, though I am curious how many years has it been since the rift was first opened?

Sovereign Court

It's been several generations since the rift war. Everybody sort of settled in around their comfort zones, as the war is now a memory that is slowly fading from minds, and most people can now only find it in history books. Only elves, old ones, still remember vividly the massacre that orcs, trolls and ogres caused to their people.

As for religion, elves venerate Ianna, the goddess of the moon. Dwarves usualy venerate Magnur, god of forges and mining. As for humans, the only god that they pray to is Ahura, the god of the sun. However, he has many aspects.

Since there are few gods, the choice of a domain is somewhat larger, per god.
As far as domains go:

Ianna:
- Air
- Charm
- Community
- Good
- Knowledge
- Liberation
- Magic
- Nobility

Magnur
- Artifice
- Earth
- Law
- Protection
- Rune
- Strength

There are two most worshipped aspects of the Ahura the sun god, the nurturing sun and the destroying sun. A cleric can be of good alignment and venerate the destroying sun, as long as he doesn't use his powers for evil. Same goes for Paladins. While paladins of the nurturing sun believe in the sanctity of life and that most deserve to live, paladins of the destroying sun believe that guilty should be punished with a fitting punishment that should never cause the punished one prolonged suffering.

Nurturing sun:
- Animal
- Community
- Glory
- Good
- Healing
- Knowledge
- Plant
- Repose
- Weather

Destroying sun:
- Darkness
- Destruction
- Fire
- Magic
- Strength
- Sun
- War

Also there are numbers of minor deities venerated by a single community, or spirits of ancestors for barbarians.

So would Ragthiel fall under Destroying Sun War, Strength or Nurting Sun Good and Glory? lol

Dunno, your choice. Pick whatever feels most apropriate for your character. My job will be to make this a fun and challenging experience for the party i choose.

@Hama: Looks like you have a good mix to choose from so far. Not trying to hurry you at all, just wondering if the Oct. 1 start date still holds based on the interest level?

Sovereign Court

I changed my concept I was talking about earlier, I'll post my half-elf druid(either wolf shaman or plains druid) later today.

Sovereign Court

Maybe too far away. Eigth days. I might move the date closer. Like sept. 26th but i will decide upon it tomorrow.

The Exchange

I would like to offer my Half elf druid(wolf shaman), let me know if you have any questions. All of his stuff is on his alias, so have a good read! hehe good luck everybody!

Sovereign Court

Ok, it seems that this is it as far as interested people go. I am happy to announce that i have chosen players, more then i thought i would to play. Also, we begin play tonight at midnight CET, maybe a little sooner.

I will open threads for OOC discussion and the PbP thread.

I have been thinking for a while, and since this is a PbP, and i Gm-ed before i simply thought this

We can begin the OOC discussion soon, when i create the thread. There will be a little more detailed backstory for the campaign and some common knowledge that your characters should be privy to.

So, yes, that means that

Narnel
Magnus,
Malhasturian,
Phagin,
Khaod, (btw, post your backstory in your profile too)
Tampalasan,
Tilurn
Orson

Get to play. Let's all have fun.

Man! I thought this was dead due to the lack of posting, so I submitted Mal the Red to another pbp. Is it too late to change him with an Oracle of Battle I have ready? I can come up with a decent background soon. If you want Mal to stay instead, I guess I'll have to change my character there. What do you suggest me to do Hama?

BTW this is the Oracle I'm talking about. I figured he could come from Surdok, a desert dweller that fanatically views fighting as a way to achieve illumation. Fighting, for him, is spreading his belief that everyone is going to die, so you might as well die gloriously and sell your life dearly. He was a gladiator in the Surdok capital up until the war started: the he joined the human armies of the south.

He dresses in light multicolored robes as the fashion of his people, and always has his trusty polearm at hand, using a style colled Dashing Cobra (which consists in using long reach weapons, waiting for the right opportunity to strike). His many scars tell a history of violence and blood, his body wasted by the numerous wounds. In battle he is menacing and tries to intimidate his opponents by showing his prowess with the weapon and casting divine blessing upon himself.

He respects bravery and martial prowess. He doesn't hate any particular race or group: to him, everyone is equal in combat, as the blood is red for all of us.

Sovereign Court

Ok...works for me. You can use Oberon, instead of mal

Thanks - looking to forward to playing.
