GM Haladir |
A quick examination of the guard tower reveals nothing of note other than the ancient frescoes, yet their mystery will remain until another day.
You then turn your attention to the cobweb-choked corridor. Theodora begins sweeping away the webs with her sword and the rest of you follow gingerly.
Perception checks... Petracleus and Countessa have already rolled:
Celowyn: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Countessa: 8
Daimon: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Petracleus: 15
Theodora: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Verran: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
...and sometimes the GM rolls well for the players...
As you slowly make your way down the 10-foot-wide corridor, everyone by Countessa hears the distant sound of a man shriek in terror. "Arrrgh!! Get them off me!! Get them off me!!"
Surprise round. Everyone other than Countessa may act.
Initiative checks...
Celowyn: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Countessa: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Daimon: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Petracleus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Theodora: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Verran: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Ireena: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Order: Celowyn, Daimon, Ireena, something, Petracleus, Theodora, Countessa, Verran.
Celowyn and Daimon may go.
GM Haladir |
The distant voice has a distinct Chelish accent and isn't Merrick's.
Hearing the voice calling out for help, Celowyn and Daimon move deeper into the pitch-black, web-choked corridor, cutting at the webs with their swords. After another ten feet into the corridor, you find the source of the cries: The transluscent image of a halfling is suspended by ghostly chains from the ceiling. Ghostly spiders crawl over his body as he cries out in fear!
And now everyone feels themselves stuck in the sticky strands of the web, with a swarm of spiders crawling over your own bodies!
Everyone please make a DC 15 Will save. This is a mind-affecting fear effect.
If you fail the Will save, please also make a DC 15 Fortitude save.
Fort save for Ireena: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 ...succeeds
Petracleus |
Petracleus, Will Save (assuming I am close enough for the plus 4 from Theodora given that I wrote that I was following... and Petracleus gets a further plus 1 from Fighter Bravery): 1d20 + 3 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 1 + 4 = 18
"That's not Merrick!!! Stand fast friends... be brave!!!"
Celowyn |
Will (DC 15): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Oof, even if she's close enough for Thera's +4 that's still a failure!
Fort (DC 15): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
"Aiiieeee!" Celowyn shrieks as she feels hundreds of tiny legs scuttling all over her body. "Off, GET THEM OFF!" She furiously begins swatting and flailing in an attempt to get the spiders off!
Countessa De'Ambraith |
Will save: 1d20 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 4 = 13
Fort save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Countessa screams in panic as the ghostly spiders crawl over her. She is unable to do anything other than bat furiously at them, trying to remove them.
GM Haladir |
Round 1
However: You do see six actual giant spiders climbing down out of the webs! Their bodies are cat-sized, yet their legs span at least five feet!
Celowyn and Daimon may go.
Damion Kush |
"Look out! Not all of them are imaginary!"
Damian will take a 5' step and swing at one of the approaching spiders.
greatsword: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 - 2 = 20 (power attack)
damage: 2d6 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (3, 2) + 7 + 4 = 16
I doubt they count as flat footed but just in case add sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8
Petracleus |
Petracleus holds fast, waiting for one of the arachnids to scuttle in to range of his blades...
Delayed Action if an Arachnid moves within 5ft.
Petracleus, Rapier vs Arachnid (two weapon fighting): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Petracleus, Short Sword vs Arachnid (two weapon fighting): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13 for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
...in the dust and web of the corridor, the erstwhile swordsman is ill-prepared...
Celowyn |
Round 1
In her haste and panic to get free of the webs and the spiders, Celowyn initially pays no heed to the cries of her companions - but then through haze...
"...imaginary!"
Will (DC 15): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Not...real....IT'S NOT REAL!
Exerting all of her focus and willpower, the ranger suddenly sees the webs and spiders for what they are - mere illusions. Then her eyes flicker upwards and see the approaching spiders - much larger and appearing to be very real indeed!
Countessa De'Ambraith |
Countessa buckles at the knees, as the spiders' venom takes effect. She fights to throw them off of her, only to find herself more deeply entangled in their webs.
GM Haladir |
Reminder: I'll be using the Unchained poison & disease rules...
Round 1
Hearing Theodora's and Daimon's words echo through the distance, doubt about what she's experiencing crosses Celowyn's mind. With a strong effort of will, she sees through the phantasm and realizes that the web and spiders are all in her mind. Yet the six cat-sized black-and-yellow spiders descending through the webs appear all too real!
Daimon brushes through the wispy cobwebs and slashes at one of the spiders, easily cutting it in half.
spider #2 vs. Ireena: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 ...miss
spider #3 vs. Countessa: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 ...miss
spider #4 vs. Countessa: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 ...hit
spider #5 vs. Celowyn: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 ...miss; subject to AOO
Ireena's Fort save vs. poison (DC 11): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 ...fails
The remaining spiders descend on the party members that seem to have been affected by the haunt. Two each land on Ireena and Countessa, and each of the women are bitten.
Countessa: Take 2 hp damage, and please make a DC 11 Fortitude save. This is a poison effect.
The fifth spider attempts to land on Celowyn. Celowyn: You can take an AOO against this Tiny creature before it can attack you.
Petracleus then attempts to skewer one of the spiders that's on Countessa, but the thing skitters out of the way.
Petracleus' delayed action happens now, as above. Everyone else may go now.
Countessa: You may attempt another DC 15 Will save as a full-round action to break out of the phantasm.
Celowyn |
Celowyn is likely weaponless from dropping her bow to swat at the illusions earlier, so alas no AoO for her, even if you could take them with a bow!
Round 2
Celowyn manages to dodge the small spider as it attempts to land on her, reaching for her morningstar as she does. She quickly attempts to squish the thing before it can try again!
Attack (Morningstar): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Haladir |
Celowyn pulls out her morningstar and smacks the spider that had crawled onto her arm. Its exoskeleton is cracked and one leg snaps off, but it still skitters back toward her.
Theodora easily slices a spider in half. Its legs twitch unsettlingly, but it's clearly dead.
Still waiting for Countessa, Daimon, and Verran...
Countessa De'Ambraith |
Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Fort save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Countessa gasps again as she is bitten. In an instant, her mind clears and she realizes that while most of the spiders were phantasms, that one was all-too real! In a panic, she brushes with her quarterstaff, attempting to knock it off of her arm.
GM Haladir |
Verran: I missed your earlier attempt to identify the effect... Sorry about that! This is clearly a persistent haunting by the restless spirit of someone who was killed by spiders. As with most haunts, positive energy will likely dispel it.
Verran holds action as he studies the haunt, looking for weaknesses...
Ireena's Fort save vs. ongoing (DC 11): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 ...fails!
Petracleus attempts to skewer a spider on Countessa, but the arachnid moves too quickly to be hit.
Theodora kills one of the spiders on Ireena with her falcion.
With an act of will, Countessa breaks out of the phantasmal webs only to be bitten by an all-too-real spider. She feels her arm go numb at the bite as its poison flows into her body. Countessa: You are weakened from a Strength poison.
Ireena also shakes herself out of the phantasm when the very real spider bites her. "Oww! Hey-- this one's real!"
Round 2
Daimon slashes through one of the cat-sized spiders on Countessa, killing it. Celowyn also bashes the one on her with her morningstar. However, that spider was mostly in its web, and the force of the blow mainly threw it to the floor, hard.
One spider each remains on Ireena and Countessa. The spider that had been on Celowyn was knocked to the floor in Celowyn's square.
spider vs. Ireena: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 ...hit
spider vs. Celowyn: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 ...miss
Ireena Fort save vs. new (DC 11): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
The spiders on Ireena and Countessa both bite them again.
Countessa: Please take another 2 hp damage, and please make two DC 11 Fortitude saves; one for the new dose of poison and one for the existing dose.
Everyone may go!
Countessa De'Ambraith |
Fortitude: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Fortitude: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Countessa moans as the poison courses through her veins, her legs failing to support her any longer. She sinks to her knees under the weight of her gear. She halfheartedly attempts to brush the spider off of her arm.
Unarmed Attack: 1d20 + 2 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 - 2 - 2 = 5
She is not attempting to do damage, merely to brush the spider away.
Celowyn |
Round 3
"Rggh! Nasty pests!" Celowyn snarls as she brings her morningstar down in an attempt to squish the spider before it can try to crawl back on her or someone else. Unfortunately she misjudges her aim and her weapon cracks harmlessly against the stone floor instead.
"Hold still!"
Attack (Morningstar): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Verran of Pharasma |
Cursing at the haunt, Verran will move to smash any remaining spiders with his mace.
attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 7 - 1 = 12
damage just in case: 1d8 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 - 1 = 5
in the altertnative, he'll attempt to determine how this haunt might be destroyed. See earlier religion check
Petracleus |
Grimacing as the spiders escape his first attempts to skewer them, Petracleus steps forward and, more balanced this time, thrusts and slashes once more...
Petracleus, Rapier vs Arachnid (two weapon fighting): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Petracleus, Short Sword vs Arachnid (two weapon fighting): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
GM Haladir |
More thorough update this afternoon.
GM Haladir |
Order: Celowyn, Daimon, Ireena, monsters, Petracleus, Theodora, Countessa, Verran.
Round 2 (continued)
Spider's Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Petracleus continues to try to stab the spider attacking Celowyn, but it keeps skittering out of his reach.
While Countessa tries in vain to shoo the spider off her back, Theodora knocks it off her friend, then smashes it with her falchion.
Verran smashes at the wounded spider attacking Celowyn, but it manages to skitter out from under his mace at the last moment.
Round 3
The wounded spider attacking her is devilishly agile, as Celowyn can't manage to crush it either.
Daimon knocks the spider from Ireena, and then deftly cleaves it with is sword.
Ireena draws her longsword and tries to attack the sole remaining spider, but her swing is clumsy due to the numbing poison coursing through her arm.
The spider then skitters away from you, scurrying through Petracleus' legs into the webs. It then quickly climbs into the thick webs into the shadows.
During the whole fight, the ghost of the chained-up halfling continues to scream in terror as the swarm of ghostly spiders devour his ghostly flesh. Yet, as the living spider retreats, his ghostly image fades away, and his screams echo distantly into the darkness.
The spider uses Acrobatics to withdraw from combat, evading any attempted attacks of opportunity. If you want to try to kill this one, you'll need to make Perception checks to find it. Otherwise, combat over.
With their successful saves, Ireena and Countessa's poison has run as far as it will. You'll remain at the Weakened state until the poison starts to wear off natually.
A lesser restoration spell automatically reduces the severity of an ongoing poison effect by one step toward Healthy.
You also notice that there are two rusty iron chains hanging from the ceiling, each ending in a manacle. Below the chains is a pile of bones covered in dust and cobwebs.
Your actions?
Celowyn |
Having spotted the spider, she carefully kneels down and retrieves her bow - still keeping one eye on the stealthy arachnid. She nods upward and aims her bow, drawing the attention of the others to the spider's hiding spot.
"Riiiiiiight...there!" she whispers, loosing an arrow.
Concealment (1-20 misses): 1d100 ⇒ 50
Attack (Longbow): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Celowyn will point out the spider's location to the others.
Petracleus |
"Ahhhh, I see it..."
Concealment miss chance (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 20
Petracleus, Composite Longbow vs Spider: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22, for 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
...except, Petracleus hasn't actually seen it - his arrow slicing through cobwebs to finally strike nothing but stone... grabbing another arrow, the bard scowls.
Petracleus |
"If we can set an uneasy soul to rest now... then maybe we should? But I think Theodora has the truth of it... As long as Strahd holds dominion here, there may be no peace", Petracleus, rapier still drawn, looks to Verran and for his Pharasmin views...
Happy to move along the corridor if no-one else has any objections.
