Spoiler:
Verran's past is as much a mystery to him as perhaps anyone else. In his late teens he found himself a slave, or more accurately the livestock, of the undead lords of Geb. His mind warped by the horrors of the experience, he remembers little of his life before he was rescued from the "farms" by a group of Phrasaman raiders out of Lastwall and Ustulav. The few bits he remembers is a ship, another ship with yellow sails, and a place called Okeno. Not having a family he knows of to return to, he returned to Lepidstadt with the Pharasmans and was raised by the temple. Grateful for pulling him from further torture and eventual devouring, Verran devoted his life from then on to the service of The Lady of Graves.
