Background:
Damion grew up in the slums on the outskirts of the city of Ardis in central Ustalav. When he was still a boy a sickness swept through the slums and both of his parents caught the disease. His mother passed quickly but his father held on for a few days before finally succumbing. As his father lay dying he called Damion to his side and bade him to keep his sisters safe. His parents were serfs and left them with no money and few possessions. Damion needed to grow up quickly and find work, or starve. Given a choice of surviving as a predator or suffering as prey he chose predator. He joined a local gang, the Blackhearts.
Talon, the leader of the Blackhearts, saw something in Damion and took him under his wing. Under his tutelage Damion learned his trade and his rough code of justice. City guards didn't care to venture into the slums so gang law was the only law that that the residents knew. Most of the more upstanding residents of Ardis would have been surprised at how even handed that justice was. The gang didn't target the people on their own turf. For one thing they had close ties to the many of the slums residents and for another, there was little of value to steal. Instead they preyed on the merchants and nobles in the city and retreated back the familiar warrens when the job was done. For the next few years Damion helped carry out illicit missions, protecting Blackheart territory and sabotaging the interests of rival gangs.
The rules the Blackhearts lived by could be summed up simply enough; 40% of the take from any job went to the gang, Don't do any jobs on our own turf, Don't harm or steal from fellow members. It was that last one that was Damion's undoing. One day returning from a job, he caught a rival member assaulting one of his sisters and in a fit of rage, killed the man. If he had simply subdued him and sought judgment it would have gone differently but by slaying the man outright Talon had little choice. Because of the extenuating circumstances Damion escaped execution but was exiled from the Blackhearts and by effectively, the city. Other gangs would have killed him on sight and he certainly didn't fit in the more upscale areas of town. Talon quietly promised to watch out for his sisters but told him never to return.
Damion wandered for a time doing odd jobs to keep himself clothed and fed but could never find anyplace were he felt like he could fit in. Eventually he fell in with a group of adventures who's wandering lifestyle and easy camaraderie suited him. For now he's content to adventure, gaining experience and coin but one day he hopes to find a place he can call his own. Hopefully then he will be able to have his sisters rejoin him so he can follow his father's dying wish. To keep them safe.
