Sorry, my apologies as I wasn't entirely clear in my previous post when Twigs ransacked the storeroom and the armory. The armory was the room by the west door in the hallway (#12) and the storeroom was the room beyond the north door in the office (#13). So that only leaves one locked door in the office (the west door in the office). I've updated the map in the campaign header.

Felrin concurs with Malum’s suggestion, gesturing with a tip of his head to Tomas that he should follow Malum. ”Let’s head into your office and get the full tour.”

As the group moves into the office, Felrin says, ”I say we go to the warden’s tower too. It seems there won't be guards between us and the tower, so it doesn't add much risk, especially if Grumblejack is keeping everyone busy elsewhere. We bring Blackerly with us, go to Mathias' tower, and see what we find. It might pay off big - maybe Mathias has a way out that the sergeant doesn't know about.”

Pausing for a moment to consider Blackerly’s sly face, Felrin continues, ”I don’t trust this fellow a whit, except where he’s aiming to save his own skin. And that gives me some faith in his point about the guards being suspicious of a large, unscheduled patrol. Just walking out with him is not likely to work, one shout at the wrong moment could bring all the guards in the place down on us. I don’t know why he didn’t keep that information to himself and try to use it - the man’s a gambler, after all – but I think it’s got some truth to it. So trying to bluff our way out as a 6-man patrol - at a time when there are no patrols - while walking around with the sergeant who never patrols at night, just doesn’t seem like a winning strategy to me.”

”And if Gil ever comes back, I’ll have to tell him I agree with him about the carriage – leaving that way has a certain ironic appeal, but it could be a deathtrap, and I prefer to avoid those.”

Fel will take a crossbow (light, I assume?), 15 bolts, a coil of rope, and a flask of lantern oil. And a signal horn, I guess.

No problem!

Malum will unlock the other door (the west side of the office). While the others take a poke through them, he will take the time to read thru the notes and such on the desk.

Edit'd for a change in plan.

Tomas sullenly glares at Felrin as he is lead back to his office You wonder WHY I didn't keep the information to myself? Don't you think you answered your own question? I want to live through this dammit. If you fools insist on me accompanying you and the guards see it and are alerted, you'd cut me down before they ever got close enough to turn you into dog fodder! That's a fools wager. And as much as I'd like to see you animals meet your maker - the hate on his face for all prisoners is quite apparent - I'd much prefer to be alive instead.

Wanting to continue his exploration, Malum moves to the west door in Tomas' office and cautiously opens it. As the door swings open, he peers inside before going back to perusing the paperwork on Tomas' desk. Will open the room on the map in the next update

Assuming anyone else wants to wander in to Tomas' bed chambers, here's the room description.

The room is a window to its occupants soul. There are clothes, filthy uniforms, dishes with half-eaten food that has long since spoiled everywhere... and it stinks! Apparently, Tomas is rather slovenly - bad enough to put the filthiest of swines to shame.

In the center of the room is a rather large bed - unmade, its sheets thoroughly wrinkled and stained. There's a wooden writing desk on one wall by the door with a half-empty pitcher of something amber. The surface of the desk is sticky in spots. Other furnishings in the room consist of a small bedside table beside the bed, a wardrobe with its doors open and overflowing with clothes and another table covered in old papers and assortment of reading material along with a few decks of cards and half a dozen bottles filled with an amber liquid.

Giltharon:

I'll open up the map once the others are outside too. For now... imagine it ;)

As Giltharon heads out the front door, all seems quiet outside after the scream you heard. The cloudy sky leaves very little light out from the moon and shadows are deep everywhere.

Looking to the left and right, he makes up his mind and heads to the right, passing the fountain in the center of the courtyard. His sharp eyes pick out a splatter of blood by the stone near the fountain. This must likely have been where the scream came from.

His sharp eyes pick out signs of the ogre's heavy step but they seem to be all over the place. Gil decides to circle around the prison and heads east. To the north lies another structure jutting out in front of what must be the gatehouse. The door currently lies open. Intrigued, he wanders closer, sticking to the shadows. Just outside the building by a dark corner sits Grumblejack, with a very dead Boris beside him along with 4 dogs.

I'm going to presume you want to obviously get his attention quietly since that's what your intent was?

Pssst! Over here! he sends out an urgent whisper to the ogre. Jack! Over here!

The ogre's sharp ears perk up as he looks up from what he had been chewing on. He shambles over until he spots Giltharon. Little pointy ears! he rumbles. You all still talking or we excape now? Jack look for own way and Jack find dog! You want? he holds out a shank of... something towards Giltharon.

Bluff: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Starting to move back from where he had come, Gil whispered over his shoulder "You finish up here and I will run back and tell the others you are coming."

Gil intends to tell the others to play along with his lie, assuming Jack buys it. He makes it especially clear to Tomas that his life depends on him shutting up.

I didn't see anyone actually say it, but Numair will ensure that Blackerly has manacles applied to him to keep his hands behind his back.

As the group enters his office and quarters, Numair smirks again. "So tell me, sergeant, where is the rest of your cash hidden? You're a gambler and the boss; please don't try and tell me that measly pouch you tossed at us was all you had!" Without waiting for a response, Numair suggests to Twigs and the rest, "Search this room well. He's bound to have something good. He's a swindler and a con man; we can spot each other a mile away."

Numair on the other hand, will focus his searching writing desk and the papers on the table.

Tomas slumps against the east wall in his bed chambers and glares at Numair, watching the wizard rifle through his desk. You may think you're smart boy but you don't know much about running a prison do you? He chuckles, seemingly somewhat at ease with the knowledge that he's not about to die, at least not just yet. I *skipped* over that because there is no meaning to two blasts. Two could very easily be confused for three... or three for two. And my guards have clear cut instructions. Entering Tomas' chambers, Gils expression left no question what he was thinking "A fitting residence for a man like him."

"I found Jack. Seems he stumbled upon a pack of guard dogs, but he has dealt with them. I told him we would be heading south towards the tower. I may have lead him to believe we think the way out is in that direction, so be sure to keep that in mind when talking near him. Twigs follows his usual modus operandi and turns the room upside down searching for anything of use. In the drawer of the nightstand, he finds another bottle similar to the ones on the table filled with amber liquid.

Note: this is larger than a 'vial' which typically holds 1 dose of potion... so let's say this is equal to about 4 vials.

Also hidden under the bed is a small box about a foot wide. It looks fairly well-used and has a very obvious lock on it.

Numair rifles through the papers and odds and ends on the table while Twigs ransacks the room. About the most interesting thing he finds is a ledger belonging to Tomas that seems to outline some form of monetary transactions between groups of guards and himself.

Because if I find out differently, that is a breach of the contract and you forfeit your life and soul. Seems like something very minor to lose something so precious to you, hmm?"

Numair sees the box that was found, and tells Twigs, "I suspect one of the keys will open that. Blackerly, you want to tell us what's in it first? Maybe let us know of any traps or surprises that may await us?"

He begins reviewing the papers he found, trying to ascertain what the transactions might be, and for how much money. "And what are these, 'good' sergeant? What sorts of transactions are you making?" he asks, absentmindedly, as he looks closer.

Tomas continues to glower at Numair Transactions? Those chumps lost the money fair and square! Not my problem if they aren't as skilled at games of chance. The box contains... ah... some savings. Don't expect to work forever. You savages likely need it more than I do though if you intend on going on the run.

Ummm - please don't touch that - he interrupts Twigs as he notices him handling the amber liquid filled bottle in the dresser. That's... uh... medicinal. I have trouble sleeping and it helps.

Opening the box Twigs finds Tomas' stash of loot he's apparently been squirreling away for a while. There's 890gp in coin, a rather expensive looking ring with a deep red stone, a small gold figurine shaped like a kraken and gold teeth that look awfully familiar. Added to the loot tracker with DCs required to appraise.

As Felrin examines the bottle, Tomas looks from Twigs to Felrin Of course it's not wine you dolt! It's home-brewed... the finest moonshine you'll find around. Keeps morale up.

Grumblejack was just making his way back in to find Gil since he ran in ahead to warn the group about his plan ;) Btw, good call on the 'how are we going to carry this stuff' Gil as I was about to ask the group the same question when you folks went out the front door... lol. There were 3 sacks in the storeroom which I didn't include in the list since no one specifically asked for containers and Twigs' int roll was... well... lacking.

Tomas shrugs at Numair It's your funeral. He's not one to be trifled with but I should know better than to try and reason with animals. You won't find any interference on my part... other than taking the key to my chains off your corpse after he's done with you.

As the group heads out of Tomas' bedchamber, Giltharon darts ahead and comes out with three sacks found in the storage room... and almost runs head along into the ogre.

There you are, pointy ears! he rumbles. We go now?

Seeing Tomas being led out into the hallway, he freezes for a moment and then lets out an angry howl. BAD BAD LITTLE 'UN! Why you with him?! 'jack SMASH you all!!

You folks have about 12 seconds to reason with him before he rampages.

The consensus seems to be to head to the warden's tower so here's what I need as the group heads out the door:
a. How many bottles of moonshine did you take? (up to a max of 6) And did that include the one from the dresser or just the ones on the desk?
b. Who's carrying them?
c. Marching order - including relevant positions for grumblejack and Tomas.
d. The warden's tower according to Blackerly was to the south... are you going to circle east or west around the building and what the general approach is going to be?

Im gonna call it Felrin, Sabel, Tomas, Malum, Numair, Twigs, Jack, Gil then, unless someone objects.

Assuming Grumblejack is mollified for now ...

"When we find the warden, I suggest we come up some sort of ruse to lure him out in an ambush. As a spellcaster, if we can surround him, his casting will be much more difficult. I will try and daze him, of course, but we must close the distance to him quickly."

"What do you think, Tomas? I certainly do not expect you to attack your boss, but you might be able to lure him out with a call ... perhaps with a call that the prisoners are escaping! You wouldn't even have to lie, how about that? Like I said, you'll be better off with him dead, too!" Numair continues to chuckle; it's fairly obvious he's having far too good a time playing with Blackerly like this.

Super Secret GM Rolls:

This is going to determine how hard a time you folks have... Tomas' reactions, jack's reactions, etc. etc. go away.
1d2 ⇒ 1
1d6 ⇒ 3
2d4 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3
2d8 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

Looks like going to be a long post so bear with me.

Tomas gives Numair a look filled with hate. You know nothing boy. Mathias doesn't give a damn about prisoners or running this prison. If he's there, he's likely sleeping and he's not one you wish to rouse. He gets a maniacal look in his eyes and starts laughing Yes, YES! Oh share that information with him. He'll gladly fill you in on the rest and what his share of his take is while he cuts your heart out. Numair seemingly dismissed, he turns to Izabelle and Twigs Listen, I know I was a bit harsh on the two of you earlier with the questioning... but you're being led to a fate worse than death by this fool. - and he collapses into gales of laughter on the floor until prodded roughly by Malum to get back on his feet.

Dismissing his warnings, the assembled group files quietly out the front door - Felrin and Sabel leading the way with the ogre following close behind. Malum cheerfully walks beside a frowning manacled Tomas who appears to have calmed down some but keeps glancing this way and that. Numair and Twigs follow closely behind the sergeant, making sure he stays in line with the occasional prod or not-so-gentle nudge. Ever the fearless leader, Giltharon brings up the rear.

The ones who haven't been outside yet look about in disbelief as if seeing the outside world for the first time. The cloudy night sky blocks out the moon leaving very little light in the courtyard. Deep shadows thrive in every corner, like quiet beasts stalking in the night, waiting patiently to devour their prey.

About 30 feet beyond the front door of the prison, lies a stone fountain - seemingly the only decoration in this gloomy place. Off in the distance, roughly 60 feet ahead, the group can barely make out another building rising up out of the ground - likely the gatehouse Tomas spoke of.

Avoiding the building to the north, the group quietly circles to the east of the main prison building. They turn the corner walking south and sure enough, the carriage Tomas spoke of comes into view, two horses still tethered to the buggy, dozing in the dark. The group passes by the carriage and the door leading to the kitchen quietly, taking care not to disturb the horses and risk alerting anyone. Turning another corner, they proceed down the southern face of the building as the warden's tower rises up in the distance.

The night sky gets even more gloomy if possible as what little light was visible in the courtyard via the torches is now gone. There are no lights visible in the warden's tower. Judging by its height, you estimate it to be likely three levels. The group lets out their collective breaths they didn't realize they had been holding in as they get to the tower entrance undetected.

Felrin steps up to the door that has a notice on it. His darkvision comes in handy as he reads it in a whisper Office hours 10 am - 6 pm. Absolutely no admittance outside office hours unless pre-approved by Mathias Richter.

He lets out a soft chuckle as he looks back at the others and tries the door... which swings quietly inwards. The interior is pitch black - what little light comes in from the door is soon eaten up by the interior shadows. Luckily, Felrin and Malum find the darkness no challenge and are able to survey the room as the rest of the group cautiously steps in.
did anyone think to bring any light?

In the center of the room lies the stairway leading up to the second level. Other than that, the room appears to be largely empty and devoid of any furnishings.

Some more super secret rolls:

1d10 ⇒ 1
1d8 ⇒ 6

As the group finishes moving in, there's a loud *click* of something engaging... or disengaging somewhere. Sabel hisses and issues a hurried 'shhhh' to the others signalling with her hands to stop all movement.

The prisoners freeze as they feel a slight gust of something moving. There's a quiet sighing sound and the front-liners feel 'something' brushing past as it whispers past them towards the wizard, perhaps sensing the magical energies emanating from him, or perhaps chosen at random.
touch attack on Numair AC12: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 that's dmg to str btw Numair

Hearing Numair's muffled cry, Felrin and Malum look about and see... something. It looks like a patch of inky darkness that's somehow darker than the rest of the area around it, hovering about 15 feet up in the air above the ogre's head.

Combat conditions: It's dark (unless someone lights a torch or something). The 'thing' (I've left hp, AC out on purpose for this one to preserve the suspense and dread of fighting something 'unknown') can be shot at since it's up in the air right now... or you can ready attacks for if/when it makes another pass.

Twigs, in a panic, lets loose a crossbow bolt at the flying shape, pressing another bolt into the slot and losing sight of it again, frantically pointing his weapon in different directions trying to pinpoint it again. "Lads, wot is that? Oh, we're in a right ol' two-an'-eight, ain't we?"

In a bit of a panic, alarmed by Twigs' reaction and never having seen such a creature before, Felrin drops his padded club to the ground and fumbles for his crossbow. He fires a bolt into the darkness, unsure if he's had any effect on the thing or not.

Alarmed by the unknown, Gil stepped back, hurriedly taking aim at the apparition. Releasing the bolt, he felt confident he had hit it, but in the gloom he couldnt be sure.

The ogre stands in the center, head tilted to one side as he watches the bolts fly. Finally realizing he has no ranged weapon, he tries to jump at the 'thing' trying to bring it down to no avail.

Where the door out pointy-ears? Only flying bog thing here... 'jack see them at home but they light not dark like this one. No good to eat, never get to catch them! rrrraaaggh

Btw he's not too bright so I wouldn't rely too much on his description of what he says. Grumblejack looks for the lowest common denominator in things - if it's something similar to what he's seen or heard in the past, then it must be it. He's likely confusing this 'thing' with marsh lights / wisps he's seen in the moors.

Numair groans as his strength is sapped. "Something you forgot to mention, Blackerly?!" he hisses at the sergeant.

Numair:
Right attempts to identify the 'thing' Numair but not quite high enough. It's definitely something that's not native to this plane.

The bolts thrum throw the air in the darkness as the majority of the group take pot shots at the thing in a mixture of panic and surprise. Giltharon watches at least two bolts come close to the inky blackness and disappear - the thing showing no signs of being slowed by them.

Tomas lets out a miserable moan and gibbers you think I would have let you drag me in here even against my will if I knew about this thing, idiot? I said NO ONE comes in here and I meant it! Unchain me! We need to get out of here. For the love of Mitra, release me dammit. Whimpering, he tries to backpedal towards the door and runs into Twigs who gives him a shove in return.

With a sound similar to the night wind blowing through an empty alley, the thing swoops down once again and seems to envelop the wizard.

Touch atk vs Numair AC12: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2 Numair - you're at 6 total str dmg

The thing seems to wrap itself around Numair's shoulders like some fiendish parasite, feeding on the wizard's life force, as the rest of the group watches in horror.

Combat conditions: It's still dark. Anyone attacking w/o darkvision, please remember to roll 1d100, 1-50 misses. The 'thing' is around Numair (NOT grappled though). Malum, Jack, Numair, Twigs and Gil can make melee attacks should you choose to attack. Felrin and Izabelle would need Malum or the ogre to get out of their way first if they wish to melee. Any ranged attacks are considered firing into melee due to Numair's proximity to the thing.
