@Gil - I so wish you hadn't done that as you will note I DID indicate to make the IC post *after* this encounter... ;) this might put you at a bit of a disadvantage.

2:15 am

Giltharon:
You head out of the kitchen and head to the barracks. Rooting through the footlocker, you find the short sword. The weight feels good in your hand as you take a few practice swings before strapping it on your hip.
As you head out of the barracks, ready to move out into the hallway, you skid to a halt. Standing in the main dining area is this guy, his face turning interesting shades of purple and red at the carnage around him. He's accompanied by 3 of his cronies. All are armed, weapons at the ready and apparently itching for a fight.

Tiadora watches Giltharon head out of the room and slightly tilts her head to a side, a small smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth. She pauses a moment, shrugs her shoulders in an 'oh well' gesture and turns to Numair and Izabelle. I don't think you would find my mode of transportation very much to your liking my dear wizard. As for shackles, we all wear shackles in some form or other - were you not bound by the shackles of society before they deemed you unfit and sent you to Branderscar? Some shackles just happen to be more... tolerable... than others. Serve in Hell, rule in Heaven and all that.

She stands and walks to the fireplace gazing into the flames, the light reflecting eerily on her platinum hair giving the illusion of her head wreathed in flickering flames. Meet him or not, I have done my part in passing along what Master wished to convey.... She turns to face the group ...I wouldn't presume to control your actions. She giggles to herself at some private moment of humour known only to herself.

Tiadora turns away from the flames with an audible sigh and looks to Felrin and Malum. Something useful to aid you? Do I look like a caretaker making sure you little babes don't fall and skin your collective knees?! She pauses thoughtfully and then continues - I suppose a *little* aid wouldn't hurt things... Tiadora smiles coyly as if about to share a secret, her green eyes glinting mischievously.

Raising her right hand in front of her, she twirls a finger around in a circle indicating for the group to turn around and look behind them. You find yourself doing as she asks and look through the door to the north leading into the main dining area. Standing in the main dining area is this guy, his face turning interesting shades of purple and red at the carnage around him. He's accompanied by 3 of his cronies. All are armed, weapons at the ready and apparently itching for a fight.

As you watch, Giltharon skids to a halt on his way out of the barracks, apparently just as taken aback by the sudden arrival of Tomas Blackerly. You can hear the rage in his voice as Tomas sputters incoherently at first, spittle flying out of his mouth. You - YOU filthy miscreants did this! I'll have all your heads for this! Kill them all. Cut every last one of them down where they stand!! I want their heads for this!

Tiadora's voice rings out sweetly behind you as you feel a knot coalesce in your stomach. You may want to go help your... companion.

I'll try and get to the map and positions later today. The group is at a bit of a disadvantage because you're split. Had Gil stuck together, everyone would be in the kitchen (which has another exit as well). Of course, you could just cut and run... hehe. Tomas and the guards are in the main part of the dining area. There are late night gambling sessions that he runs at times. Him and his cronies were returning from one such session (held elsewhere) when he noticed the dead guards in the hallway, the headless guard in the chair, the dining area etc. etc. He's quite prepared for a fight. Good luck!

Realizing his precarious position, stranded as he was with Blackerly and his men in the way, Gil looked this way and that for a few moments before retreating to the barracks, positioning himself in the doorway. If they wanted him they would have to go at him one at a time.

[occ]If Gil goes before the enemy, he will move back to the barracks, drawing his weapon if the move only takes a single move action. Otherwise he will perform a Withdraw action to get there.[/ooc]

I'm going to post the map depending on who wins initiative as the guards might change position should they get first move. For the initial setup, Tomas and his three guards are around the '10' on the map (slightly to the east of it).

Initiative Rolls:

Tomas: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Tomas' Cronies: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Since Gil has already rolled init, I'll give him his roll of 15 after modifiers - for the rest:
Numair, Malum, Felrin, Izzy, Twigs (w/o modifiers): 5d20 ⇒ (7, 13, 2, 5, 8) = 35

Initiative goes to Tomas and his cronies. Will update map in next post as they move/attack. Gil - you can withdraw or position yourself accordingly once you see the map. Just revise your post.

Combat Summary Mid-Rnd 1

Tomas stands in the center of the room sputtering with rage, his face currently a deep shade of crimson, as he readies his longsword and barks out orders. Boris! Get that smarmy mouthed half-elf. Cut him into little pieces... never did like his kind. Marcus! Goran! Flank that door to the kitchen. Don't let anyone escape. Hack them into bits. I want no one left alive.

He shouts a bit louder turning to the kitchen Your little misadventure ends here fools. This is the end of the line for you! Come meet your maker and let justice be done on you.

Boris rushes up to Giltharon, bringing his blade down as he nears the bard...

Marcus and Goran take flanking positions on either side of the door to the kitchen, their weapons held ready as they prepare to cut down anyone trying to leave the room. Consider them having full to partial cover depending on your position and LoS relative to their position.

Go ahead with your posts for round 1. this fight *may* require a bit more strategic planning so feel free to use the discussion thread. I'd really like to see everyone survive. :) Also, the guard cronies have very slightly different stats than what you've been fighting so far. Might make a diff, might not.

Felrin says grimly, ”I’ll get us out of here, just give me a moment.” He then begins to grin fiercely, but his grin soon changes to a long-toothed snarl, which spreads back impossibly over his head and face as he goes through an abrupt transformation. His long black hair recedes into his skull and his skin begins to turn a pale gray color, appearing to stiffen and taking on a scaly appearance. His hands turn into gnarled claws and a ridged crest appears on the top of his head and down his back, and a long, reptilian tail extends from his spine. When his change is complete, he resembles a strange, bipedal lizard, though one that lives in the darkness of the deepest caves - and one that gives off a dank, revolting stench.

The troglodyte standing in Felrin’s place then strides toward the door, a disgusting string of yellowish drool hanging off its sharp teeth.

Marcus isn't taking any action until Round 2 per my post above - that's when his murderous command takes effect and forces him to attack Goran. Just so I'm clear - you're choosing inaction (delay) for the entire first round thus losing that time and acting after Marcus attacks Goran, yes? i.e. the post above was in fact your Round 2 action/move post?(Because of the way we do initiative, combat is I-go,you-go rather than the usual individual initiatives per my notes on how we handle combat).

Again - I'll assume this is a Round 2 action/post and flow it accordingly after Tomas/guards move in the second round. Not that the guards are going to move much - one is going to attack his ally and the other is dazed... so the only threats are Tomas and the one going after Gil. :) I'll try and get the update done later today.

Combat Map Mid-Round 2
Note: The map only shows the positions from the middle of the round - i.e. after the guards attack. Izabelle and Twigs have already posted their actions for round 2 and are currently west of Marcus and in Marcus' spot respectively (assuming Twigs attacked Goram since Marcus was dead due to Izabelle's attack). I'll update those positions in the next map.

Combat Summary Mid-Rnd 2

Reeling from his shoulder injury and realizing he didn't have enough time to barricade himself in the barracks, Gil draws his newly acquired sword to fight back. His blade hit home, digging into the Boris' side. The guards gasp of pain sends shivers down Gils spine. Flicking the blood from his blade with a flourish, he steps back a few paces, readying himself for his opponents next attack.

The group in the kitchen finding themselves in a poor tactical position quickly determine the best course of action to take. Felrin undergoes a monstrous transformation into a trog and stomps close to the door, ready to tear into the guards.

Malum slides along the east side of the wall until he gets line of sight on Marcus. Mumbling a few words under his breath, he starts accusing the other guard of obscenities. Caught in his spell, Marcus shakes with rage and murderous intent determined to attack his ally.

The following Marcus action takes place Rnd 2 guard action but listed here for continuity.

Marcus moves towards his ally and slices Goran from shoulder to groin opening up a deep wound. The damage done, he blinks in horror as he realizes the fiendish act he was just forced to commit.

Numair moves up between the druid and Twigs and mutters what's fast becoming his favourite incantation. Still in shock from his wound, Goran's eyes go blank as he loses focus on what he meant to do.

Izabelle and Twigs watch the two guards cautiously - ready to spring into action as soon as they have an opening. Their moves/actions will be posted in the next summary.

Imbeciles! Idiots!! Fight back dammit! exhorts Tomas with his weapon raised in the air ready to strike the first foe within range. He has a ready action to swing at first person in range. Getting into melee range with him = subjecting yourself to an attack before you strike unless he is incapacitated, dazed etc. I'll roll for it in the summary if/when that becomes relevant.

Spurred on by his commander, Boris attempts to skewer the half-elf so he can aid his comrades.

We didn't harm your guards, it was the ogre Grumblejack. We escaped when he broke our chains and got away before he killed us. Lower your weapon and stop this senseless slaughter, and help us catch that beast before he can harm Mathias!"

OK, reposting round 2 actions since I'm out of range for the charm. Oh, well.

Seeing as how Felrin, Twigs, and Sabel have the guards handled, Numair moves up behind them. As he is still out of range for either of his spells, he waits for one to move so that he can get close enough to Blackerly to cast. He decides to try another tactic, anyway.

Combat Summary Mid-Round 3

Map at end of current summary

Izabelle has been waiting for the right moment to strike. Watching Marcus attack the stupified Goran, she quickly dashes past him and brings her club around connecting with a vicious *crack*. Marcus crumples to the ground lifeless before he has a chance to face his attacker. She turns her feral gaze towards Blackerly. Pointing the bloody club towards him, she growls "You're next Blackerly."

Twigs watches his ally dash past Marcus and follows her into the breach. Stepping on the dead guard, he attacks the injured and rather confused Goran bringing him to within an inch of death. Gasping with shock, the guard looks this way and that for a means of escape - only to be faced with a vision out of his nightmares. Felrin, in his trog form, lunges forward and claws poor Goran's face off.

At the other end of the dining area, Giltharon manages to find the opening he had already sliced in Boris' armor. He strikes home again, digging the sword into the previous wound, going deeper this time without the armor in the way. Rather than stand and risk further injury though, he decides discretion would be the better option and jumps back into the barracks, slamming the door shut in the pain striken guard's face.

Malum gleefully watches his new companions tear into the guards and hollers further encouragement to Felrin exhorting him to greater carnage. Numair tries a different tact and shouts out of the kitchen at an enraged Tomas - "Blackerly! We are not your enemies! It was the ogre who killed them all! He broke our chains, but we were able to drive him off before he killed us. Stop the slaughter and let us talk!"

Tomas frowns for a moment watching his two guards being cut to pieces and the third severely injured. Talk? You heathens butcher my men right in front of my eyes and you want to talk?! he shouts, spittle flying out of his mouth. I don't care how you got free and how you got out of your cells. You're all going back there in a box. Enraged at the sight before him, he strides over to the closest prisoner he can see, which just happens to be Izabelle.
No, YOU're next wild wench! DIE!!! he snarls as he swings his longsword in front of him with practiced ease...
Atk longsword vs Izabelle AC14: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Izzy @ 2/11hp
The slash aimed at the druid's neck narrowly misses decapitating her as she twists at the last minute, exposing her flank to the sword instead.

Hurting from his most recent wound, Boris watches the shut door in front of him and contemplates trying to break it down or forcing it open... but decides he'd much rather try to live instead and bolts blubbering out of the room leaving the rest of the guards to their fate.

Current hp: Boris @ 2hp, Tomas still at 28hp. Other guards are dead. Go ahead with your round 3 posts. Please be mindful of the posts ahead of yours with regards to positioning etc. as usual. My gentle nudging on positions, ranges etc.. will get less frequent as the group gets more accustomed to working together and might have... unexpected results. ;) i.e. Numair's intended Charm spell fizzle rather than him getting a re-do.

Casting a curing spell on himself, Gil proceeded to open the door just enough to look out into the room. Seeing his previous attacker gone and Blackerly far across the room, he pushed the door completely open and stepped out of the barracks.

Felrin sees Blackerly approach and can positively taste his blood as he savors the opportunity to kill the man who so cruelly branded him, marking him for life and forever destroying his chances of hiding amongst people again. At the same time, he feels a new sense of freedom - no more hiding, no more running, just fighting back! "You freed me when you put that brand on me, Blackerly. And now I'll free you from your pathetic skin!"

Seeing Sabel badly wounded, and fueled by Malum's inspiration, Felrin dodges past her and lashes out with his disgusting claws and teeth. His first strike fails to penetrate the sergeant's armor, but with his second he drives a long pair of claws directly into Blackerly's left eye, actually pulling the organ out of the man's skull as he withdraws his scaly mitt. While the man reels in pain from this attack, Felrin leans in close and bites off his right ear, spitting it to the floor in front of Iz and saying, "Little snack for you, Sabel"

Btw Tomas' CMD is 16 so you moving would provoke an AoO as your acro roll was 11. This would take place before your attacks. I'll roll for this in the next summary to keep the suspense of whether your attacks bring him to almost dead or not ;)

A valid question, I suppose. But alter self gives you so few of the abilities of the form you change into (vision, swim speed, that's about it aside from a +2 stat bonus), it seems reasonable you'd keep your own. He's probably a bit hard to understand, though. ;)

Edit: just looked, trogs speak Draconic, so Felrin in trog form should be able to speak just fine. Which means he can be a spell-casting trog. Waste of some good combat abilities, but could come in handy.

If Blackerly isn't down, Numair will do as I described above, only within 25'. Charm person, pleading his case once again.

Numair intones his words, and the magic flows over Blackerly, changing his tune."Don't you see? These men are Mathias' stooges; they aren't loyal to you! They're trying to cover up the fact that their ogre ally didn't finish us off, so that the jail break can be blamed on you. Mathias is our foe! Combat Summary Mid-Round 4

Map Mid-Rnd 4

@Twigs - I needed your action because Tomas might still be active. His AoO is resolved before Felrin's attack and if he happens to get Felrin down, that would negate Felrin's attack (and 26 pts of dmg). Order of resolution is thus: Gil's move & CLW, Tomas' AoO due to Felrin's move, Felrin's attack, Numair's charm (if Tomas is active per his condition), Malum's CLW, Izzy's attack (which would break the charm), Twigs' attack.

As the battle rages in the dining area, Gil tries to determine what's going on on the other side of the door. Sorry sarge - this ain't worth dyin' for he hears Boris' shout across the room accompanied by the sound of running, retreating footsteps. Bravely assuming Boris is no longer on the other side of the door, Giltharon quickly casts a curing spell on himself and opens the door a crack to survey the room. His suspicions confirmed and Blackerly far across the room, he pushes the door completely open and steps out of the barracks.

I liked Felrin's fluff so I'll partially regurgitate it - much like a trog... :)

Seeing Sabel badly wounded, and fueled by Malum's inspiration, Felrin tries to dodge past her...

We'll see who frees whom foul demon! Get back to the abyss where you belong, foul wretched abomination curses Tomas as his stabs his longsword at the Felrin-trog thing's heart...

AoO longsword vs Felrin-Trog AC15 (I'm giving Felrin the benefit of natural Trog AC rather than what he'd be wearing): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Uh oh....

crit confirm?: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

a critical hit... is this bye bye Felrin?

Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (2, 1) + 4 = 7 Lucky bugger!

The sword passes through Felrin-trog's scaly hide deep into his body. Luckily for the tiefling, Tomas is unaware of trog physiology and seems unaware the heart isn't located where a normal heart would be. Screeching in pain, the Felrin-trog thing lashes out at the grinning guard with his disgusting claws. His strike however, fails to penetrate the sergeant's armor as the claws scrabble futilely against metal.

attks 2/3 need a full attack round so Tomas still has his eye and ear and Sabel doesn't get a snack this turn.

As Tomas gets close to the group, Numair takes the opportunity to try a different tact. He intones his words, and the magic flows over Blackerly, changing his tune."Don't you see? These men are Mathias' stooges; they aren't loyal to you! They're trying to cover up the fact that their ogre ally didn't finish us off, so that the jail break can be blamed on you. Mathias is our foe! Help us destroy him, and we can get you the glory you deserve for stopping this foul plan of his in its tracks!"

Tomas' brows furrow as he slowly lowers his sword. Warden Richter did this? Of course... now it all makes sense. He must have found out about the money. Yes, yes - we should get rid of that meddli...

His sentence is cut short by the *thunk* of Izabelle's club against his skull. She shoves up against Felrin, jostling him a bit as she tries to jockey into position and slams the unprepared Tomas with her club.
Tomas @ 20hp

Tomas' eyes reflect the pain W-Why?! he stammers as he blinks and shakes his head, the effect of Numair's spell wearing off. The confusion in his face is replaced by rage once again. Insolent animals. Your tricks will not work on me! he yells as Twigs' takes a stab at him. Desperately trying to parry the blow, Twigs nonetheless finds an opening and opens a nasty gash on Tomas' sword arm.
Tomas @ 13hp

Malum watches the group in front of him long enough to ensure he isn't going to be in any danger and quickly moves up behind Twigs. Reaching over, he grazes a hand against Izabelle (possibly inappropriately) calling on his diety to heal his companion.

Outside the dining area, the group hears Boris' receding footsteps as he continues running out of sight.

Get BACK here coward! roars Tomas as he chases after Boris. Don't you heathens think I'm done with you yet he calls out to the group as he retreats out the door and into the hallway.

we're still in combat. Boris is at 2hp and not visible. Tomas is at 13hp and in the hallway. I have left a grayed out copy of Tomas to indicate his position at the end of Round 3. The normal icon is his position after his move in mid-round 4. Go ahead with your actions for Round 4. Again - resolution will be in order of posting. Mind your positions, LoS etc. You can add a condition in your post to help you out (similar to what Numair and Gil have done in earlier rounds). Feel free to use the discussion group to plot strats before you make your IC posts if you need people to move out of the way etc.

Felrin roars in pain as Blackerly's sword is driven deep into his fetid skin. "I'll bite your throat out!" he calls, in a voice rendered almost unintelligible by his anger and the alien mouth forming the words. Seeing Blackerly fleeing, Felrin says "Oh no you don't!" He leaps onto the table with astonishing nimbleness, given that he looks like a creature made of stone and scale more than flesh and blood, and darts across it toward the doorway.

As he lands, his hands come together as if he's making a snowball, and he mutters something in a dark, garbled tongue. When he opens his hands, he's holding a dripping, mucousy ball of a translucent dark yellow, which he hurls at Blackerly's back. It makes solid contact, but little of the goo appears to penetrate the man's armor.

Combat Summary Rnd 4 and Guard's Rnd 5

The prisoners howl in rage and frustration watching Tomas turn tail into the hallway. Malum quickly pushes past the front liners, giving chase to the sergeant. Turning the corner by the doorway, he spies the injured Boris turn the corner out the front door, slamming it shut behind him.

The Felrin-trog thing roars in pain and frustration "Oh no you don't!" He leaps onto the table with astonishing nimbleness, given that he looks like a creature made of stone and scale more than flesh and blood, and darts across it toward the doorway. A superhuman effort brings him almost within Blackerly's reach.

As he lands by the doorway and continues to the hallway, his hands come together as if he's making a snowball, and he mutters something in a dark, garbled tongue. When he opens his hands, he's holding a dripping, mucousy ball of a translucent dark yellow, which he hurls at Blackerly's back. It makes solid contact, but little of the goo appears to penetrate the man's armor - but it's enough for the man to take notice of his pursuers... Tomas @ 12hp

Izabelle and Twigs keep pace with Blackerly, following him out into the hallway and end up beside Felrin, hoping to bring down the law-man.

Gil and Numair bring up the rear running after the rest of the group hoping they can catch up with Tomas before reinforcements are called in.

Tomas looks over his shoulder at his pursuers as the front door slams shut in front of him. Realizing the prisoners are apt to catch him before he catches up to Boris, he spins around as he feels Felrin's acid splatter him. He backs a few feet slowly, his sword held defensively in front of him as he reaches in to a pocket. Pulling out a vial he downs the contents quickly. Wait wait wait now... Hold on just a second! I'm wise enough to recognize when I'm outnumbered. Let's talk about this... You notice the gash Twigs gave him on his sword arm start to close and seal itself. ...you guys want out right? I can arrange that! Surely my one life is worth six of yours. Allow me safe passage and I can guarantee the same for you to the outer prison gate. What say you?

Map files are at work - situation is as follows: Tomas a square north of where he was in the most recent map after his 5 foot step. Felrin, Izzy and Twigs are abreast horizontally a 5 foot step behind Tomas. Malum 10 feet behind Tomas. Numair in the rear (15 or so feet behind) with Gil joining him in round 5. I know a couple of you posted Rnd 5 actions already. I will let the damage w/ the crossbow stand if you still want to attack after you've reviewed Tomas' action/spiel in the summary.
