You're right, Fyren, and I get there will be hiccups. I'm in a different PbP with a great group except for one player who doesn't read others' posts and sets off on his own in ridiculous ways, so we're forever having to pull his nuts out of the fire. It would be funny if he troubled with spelling and punctuation... But I think it's made me overly concerned about it here.
Anyway - I hope my post isn't seen as an over-reaction, I don't want to start any fights or step on any toes, just trying to get us started on a good approach as a party. But there's more than one way to do that.
Carry on.

"make sure he tries to eat someone else first ..."
A funny story: I mentioned in the recruitment thread for this game that I had the chance to play at PaizoCon with Gary McBride, who wrote the Way of the Wicked AP. We did a little side adventure called MinionQuest, where we worked for Grumblejack, and my character managed to please Grumblejack enough that he said to me, "Good Job! I'll eat you last."
So I think he's playing out much as the author envisioned.
Felrin Vennax |
On the marching order, Felrin would like to be in or near the front, as he's in the mood to smash things. He's also stealthy, so can go in front when we're being quiet too.
Seems our rough categorical breakdown would be something like this:
Frontish: Grumblejack, Felrin, Iz, Twigs
Middle: Malum, Numair
The very important rearguard: Gil
Anyone want to be in a different category or spot?
GM Fyren |
Btw for those of you who have played the AP before - changes in this one better or worse than how it normally plays out so far?
Giltharon Doran |
Ive got no clue, we are already past the little amount I read in another PbP (in that particular one, they could communicate with Grumblejack through bars, since their cell wasnt fully walled)
I did know about the "visit", but that looks like its off the table for this particular campaign :)
Twigs |
Marching order's good with me. And seeing the browser just ate yesterday evenings post a SECOND time, I'm going to go ahead and say lets power on through that door and not waste time. If we can dogpile onto a guard and get him to spill where Matterly is, we can just make a beeline for him.
I can't believe our luck with the signal horn perception checks, though. If you want Twigs and Felrin to be forward scouts again just say the word.
GM Fyren |
Hmm, looks like I'll probably not be available to post on Friday (2 Aug) as I won't be near a computer for a good chunk of the day.
No worries sir - thanks for the heads up. It is summer after all! ;)
Felrin Vennax |
I agree it's hard to say whether the changes are better or worse, though I have enjoyed having to figure it out on our own, rather than the external assistance I recall from my previous brief exposure.
It does keep wondering when a given thing is going to happen, and occasionally I realize it's not.
Felrin Vennax |
That's brilliant. I showed your post to my son, who's also a Pathfinder player, and we were both floored. I was waiting to make a save vs. illusion, and worried about the diabolical (and high-level!) mind that had created it.
GM Fyren |
I was half way through before I realized something was amiss...
What gave it away? So I know how to refine it better for the future... ;)
Felrin Vennax |
For some reason it was the rubber knife that clued me in that it wasn't real. Slightly too cartoonish and weird. Well, that and the surreal feeling of the whole thing.
By the way - what's our prize for winning the meta-challenge? Or was the surreal post our reward?
GM Fyren |
awwww... too cartoony? At least I didn't have an anvil drop on someone like I originally intended! lol
Nope, that wasn't the reward. That was just the post indicating you guys won. The prize will be a bit more IC info than what the group would be normally entitled to that might help you if/when you make it out of Branderscar. Can't make it toooooo OP ;)
Felrin Vennax |
Wanted to let everyone know that on Monday I start a 2-week road trip with the family. I'll be able to post off and on, I expect, but will slow down somewhat.

No worries Felrin - if we're in combat and you can't log on within 24 hrs and I need to move things along, I'll just DMPC you. Shoot me a PM if you can with the general strat you want to follow in conflict, otherwise I'll just take a conservative/safest option. Thank you for the heads up.
Felrin Vennax |
I just want to second Twigs' statement about not wanting to hold up the group, especially since I'm on the road for a bit (posting from the back of the car as the significant other drives right now). I whined about it a bit last week, but I really don't want to create an approach within the group that we "after you" each other to death either. So, since actions speak louder than words (even if they're all just words here) Felrin went through the door rather than waiting. But I won't do anything major without group buy-in.
Twigs |
I think only Felrin is in the office, and we don't really know about it yet as we're in the gathering area.
My intention was to walk into the office and check it out, seeing Twigs ruled out the other escape routes. So... yeah, we don't really know about it. Thus the perception checks.
Sorry if I wasnt clear. I think we should head that way. My gut says the east-wing rooms are a barracks, sleeping quarters and such, and thus swarming with guards. An office and a waiting desk likely have archives, or better yet, a vault on the other side. Or at the very least some big-wig sergeant to make a hostage of. (Ha! Thinking like a villain is fun.)
Izabelle Moon |
Who here fancies our chances of taking these guys on? Also, where's the ogre at?
Twigs |
This is pretty much what I was expecting if we barged into their living quarters at 1 in the morning. That's why I was so iffy about it! Also why I was hoping Jack would lead the way... We only get one surprise round, and only four of them are awake right now, and we have one and a half rounds til their friends wake up. We won't get this chance again. The real question is whether to charge or stay on THIS side of the door and force them to come through one at a time. I suppose we can always fall back if the others do so
We should find a a way to get Izabelle closer to the melee, and I definately agree that we should have barred the other door.
Giltharon Doran |
Its really just 4 guards when you think about it. If we lay into the four unarmored and unarmed ones before they can arm themselves they should go down in short order.
And since we use the marching order Ferdin refered to, that puts Jack at the front. Have him move in after the first 3 go an Coup three sleepers.
GM Fyren |
is it possible for me to join I'd like to bring in an oracle of bones necromancer
Umm... likely not. I'm running 2 games at the moment and they're both fairly active player-wise. Sorry sir.
GM Fyren |
Also, where's the ogre at?
He needs to be kept on a short leash... likely got bored and is currently out of sight of you folks since y'all were moving room to room ;)
Numair Alazario |
Fyren, just a heads up that we will be going on vacation leaving Saturday morning. Originally, it was going to be somewhere that had wifi access, but at the last moment it was changed to a camping trip, where I'm not so certain. We'll be back on Thursday, but please DMPC as needed to keep the story going. Generally, Numair will use daze quite liberally in combat and his focus is finding Mathias to hopefully obtain a spellbook (and maybe even get his own back, if Mathias confiscated it).

Will do - thanks for the heads up. Numair's vote will be to find matty as needed and daze anything that moves.
GM Fyren |
That was laziness on my part because I didn't have description of the room handy with me and you and Felrin were 15-20 feet away. So I decided to skip it for a round and not write it out until tonight ;) lol
Given that you and Felrin are slightly off to one side of the door and can't look directly in and are 15-20 feet away from the door, pretend you don't have full LoS in to the room. I'll update the map and room description tonight and you'll have your darkvision back. haha
GM Fyren |
Yeah... I have to keep SOME similarities in to the original AP otherwise I might as well call it WotW as re-imagined by GM Fyren... which would be quite the mouthful. Hopefully there will be enough changes from the original though to keep the veterans interested.
Malum the Forsaken |
When I ran it for mine I have pretty much stuck with the AP... having said that I kind of like the jail break portion and kind of wishing I'd done that for my group... they might have felt more like the spotlight. :)
