Prof. Benedictus Dickens wrote:
"Oh, I wish it was that simple Florence. It is...hard to explain, but I'll try. My hunches do not come from something mysterious source. It's just my mind that tell me that something his wrong, because I have trained it to calculate all the odds and realize when something is about to surpass the threshold of danger. I have precise explanations and reasons for the things I foresee, but the process it's just too fast. I wish my tongue was as fast as my mind, but it isn't. Furthermore, I don't immediately realize where the danger comes from, or what the danger is. I just feel that something is wrong, that the order of things could imply danger. That's the reason why I cannot warn you in time. I barely manage to act accordingly to my hunch myself..."

Nidhi's eyes glaze over after the first couple of sentences. Luckily, she's faced away from the professor. I'm surprised Augustus doesn't have more to say. He's usually so adamant about staying in the spotlight.

Zilchus Lyghtlode wrote:

"Uh huh." Zilchus says, listening to the Professor, but also preparing to open the next door.

I'm glad someone is listening. Nidhi stifles a yawn, trying not to be rude to Benedictus.

GM Euan wrote:

The doors open easily (though they are heavy). This room holds several neatly arrayed chests, boxes, and urns. The dust of centuries thickly covers every surface.

It is very quiet, aside from the chatter of the party.

"Sure, Benedictus. I'll look for traps." Nidhi scopes out the room. She sneezes from the dust, wiping her nose with the back of her hand.

Nidhi sees more detail in the room, but nothing substantively is different in her view, at least from where she is standing.

All seems safe.

Neutral Human Bard/14

"I'm fairly certain there aren't any traps in this room. Come on in," Nidhi encourages the party. Nidhi approaches one of the chests and attempts to open it. See Map

"I'm glad I have these Masterwork Thieves' Tools in case the chests are locked." Nidhi will take her time on the chests, not wanting to damage the chests or their contents.

"That makes sense...it's more of a hunch that something's amiss than a definite 'there's a poisonous snake in the box' type of feeling," Florence nods as they begin proceeding into the next room. "It'd be nice if we could all benefit from it but I'd rather one of us have a hunch than none of us."

Once Ben and Nidhii deem that the room seems to be safe, she steps inside and her jaw drops slightly at the sheer number of crates and chests sitting around. "Huh...whoever designed this place was more clever than you'd think. Nice one, hiding all this stuff behind a hidden door!"

"Um...anything I can do to help?" she adds after a moment as Nidhii sets to work on opening one of the containers. "Help catalogue things or just watch out for more trouble? Or is it safe to start opening boxes if they aren't locked?"

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi shrugs, indifferent. She glances at the others wondering what they think.

Zilchus steps into the middle of the room, sheathing his falchion and resting his left on its hilt as he looks around.

"Is this the good stuff? Can anyone tell? I bet Abdur will like what we bring from here," Zilchus asks everyone.

"Open one and let's see what we got. If its here, hidden in secret and behind that living sarcophagus, it's probably not a danger."

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Ahhh, the fruits of your labors - loot!

None of the chests and boxes in the room are locked, as the items within them were the most personal to Akhentepi, and his soul might want to have immediate access to them.

Most of the goods in the chests, such as once-fine clothing and sealed jars of food, no longer have any value after the passage of centuries, but among the spoiled and ruined grave goods are several salvageable items of value, including a masterwork longbow, a gold scarab clasp worth 50 gp, an onyx and silver holy symbol of Pharasma worth 100 gp, a silver hand mirror worth 35 gp, and a wax-sealed clay urn of nard worth 75 gp.

Neutral Human Bard/14

"Oh wow. I bet these ruined clothes used to be quite beautiful. Such a shame."

"I can carry the masterwork longbow, the gold scarab clasp, the onyx and silver holy symbol of Pharasma, and the silver hand mirror," Nidhi offers. She fits everything except the weapon into her purse satchel. Nidhi carries the masterwork longbow in her hand.

"Could one of your carry the wax-sealed clay urn of nard, please? I don't have a good way to transport it," Nidhi explains. Nidhi stands by the door, keeping out of the way in case the others wish the examine the room further.

"What the piddlespot is nard? NARD? What is that?" Zilchus asks, happy to carry the nard after the tomb is completely explored, but doesn't want to carry it while there might be threats about.

"I know what nads are, and gnarls, and turds too, of course. But nard?" Zilchus looks to the Professor, but will accept an answer from anyone.

"Shall we go explore the other doors?" Zilchus says after others have gathered what they want.

When others are ready, Zilchus will move to the other doors and open them.

Doors:

And when those doors open to another set of doors, Zilchus will scout the path to the doors, then examine the doors themselves (allowing others to do so as well) before opening them.

"I have no idea but I really hope it's not any of the things you just said," Florence replies with a grimace. "Wouldn't it be easier to leave it and come back for it once we're done, though? The jewelry and weapons are one thing but jars are a little trickier to manage - especially if we find more nasty critters and have to fight again."

Once the matter of the nard is settled, Florence resumes her place near the back of the group as they go brave even more sets of doors.

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

Bynx approaches the jar of nard and gives it a curious sniff.

"Maow."

I'm not a hound but I'm pretty sure the jar is turd-free.

"I can carry anything that needs to be transported, though we might want to wait until we're leaving before we take to much. I wouldn't want to be burdened in the middle of combat...." Augustus rests his hand on the hilt of his sword and frowns thoughtfully.

"Once we get back to Maximus of course it'll be easy to transport most of what we find here.... I do hope he's okay up there." He looks up as if he can tell exactly where Maximus is above them.

"Anyway... on to explore more doors I guess! Augustus stands behind Zilchus as he opens the next set of doors, ready to face whatever the tomb decided to throw at them next.

"Good, very good". Benedictus catalogues everything the group finds into the room with Florence's help. Turning to Zilchus, Ben's face blushes in embarassment. "Well, nards are...are...a way to express one's bravado, like when you say someone's got got n...nards..."

Uncomfortable with the subject of the discussion, Benedictus quickly tries to get out of it, moving the conversation onto something different. "I agree with Florence. We should leave the treasure here and come back later to fetch it. Anyway, if Nidhi can carry the objects without problems, that is also a good solution."

When the looting process is over, Benedictus follows the others and places himself behind Zilchus. "More doors...I'm ready!"

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The party lines up at the next set of doors (don't forget to move yourselves on the map folks!) and examines them briefly. Luckily they are not trapped, but they are a little stuck and take some doing to fully open.

This short hallway narrows sharply to the west, descending to set of stairs that abruptly ends at a rough rock wall. It looks very much like this section was to be finished later, and never was.

"This can't be it. Can it?!" Zilchus asks. "Have we found the actual burial chamber yet? Weren't those goods meant for someone's ghost to use should they need them? Well, where is the body?"

Zilchus returns to the loot room and begins a slow search.

"Yeah, it does look like we missed something somewhere..." Florence frowns. "I'll go back and have another look at the room with the false sarcophagus - and don't worry, I won't touch the northern doors!"

She turns and heads back along the hallway and through the secret door back into the large room of nasty traps and begins to slowly search for anything they might have missed...

Florence heads back to the room with the fake sarcophagus and will take 20 for a....20! :D

Neutral Human Bard/14

"I'll stay with Benedictus and help him search." Nidhi interjects. "Stay safe Florence." She's really brave to want to split up like this...

Nidhi examines the stairs, holding her Everburning Torch in one hand. The other hand holds the Masterwork Longbow, gently propped against her side. Maybe I should find a safe place nearby to store this weapon. Nidhi looks in the stairway and into the previous room for a temporary safe place for the bow. See Map

Once the others are out of earshot, Nidhi asks Benedictus "Sooo who do you have special back at home? With all that we've discovered, you've got to be excited to bring the knowledge home. Perhaps quite a few people will be proud of your adventuring?"

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The party splits up and searches a few areas of the crypt. As luck, and careful examination, would have it, two secret doors are found. First Zilchus finds one in the northern chamber (east wall), then, a little while later (much larger room), Florence finds one in the sarcophagus chamber (also east wall).

Zilchus believes his door is trapped in some way, but Florence thinks hers is safe.

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

Hah! Persistence really does pay off!

"Hey, I found something!" Florence calls as she trots back towards the hidden storage room. "There's a hidden door back there! I don't think it has any traps on it but I left it alone until Nidhii can have a better look at it," she says, looking rather pleased with herself.

Zilchus looks for Nidhi. Shouting more than looking, but requesting Nidhi's attendance with some volume.

"NIDHI!! I FOUND A DOOR! AND A SLOT!!" Zilch yells. "DO I STICK MY DAGGER IN THE SLOT!? ISN'T THAT WHAT YOU DO!?! THAT'LL FIX IT, RIGHT!? IF IT'S TRAPPED!?"

Zilchus draws his dagger but waits for Nidhi to look first.

Hearing Zilchus call down the tomb about a possible trap, Nidhi hurries back, replying loudly: "What? NO! Don't randomly stick in your dagger! You need some sort of protection first! What if it explodes? Let me do it!" Nidhi speed walks towards the sound of Zilchus' voice.

I swear if he activates a trap and drowns us all... well... then I guess we'd all be dead. Nidhi thinks flatly.

Nidhi checks for traps to see if there are any.

Zilchus steps back, alarmed, trying to see if what he was going to do was going to be *that* different. "Fine. You do it."

Zilchus steps back to give Nidhi room to work and watches what she does.

Nidhi looks a little surprised. She'd forgotten that there could be a mummy or undead wandering around in the tomb. "Ahh, you're right. Sorry Florence."

"This looks like a difficult trap... Should I try to disarm it? I'm not sure if I can."

If Florence and Zilchus want Nidhi to try, she will ask Florence "Florence, can you be ready to heal me in case this trap goes off?"

Nidhi nods back and carefully attempts to disable the trap.

Actually it's funny you mention it. Maximus has very decent hearing so I wouldn't be surprised if he could hear us with all the yelling and what not. What else could you expect though, I am his master after all."

Augustus stands back as Nidhi attempts to disarm the trap, not really having anything useful to contribute. He keeps an eye out for any enemies that might try and sneak up on them while she works.

This time, Benedictus tries to avoid the annoyed reaction he showed before when asked about his past. The scholar shrugs with a sad smile on his lips. "Unfortunately, I don't have anyone waiting from me, back at...Well, now that you mention it, I don't think I have a home anymore. My adoptive family lives in Westcrown, but my roots are here. My real parents were Garundi, or so my adoptive father told me. I don't know anything about them, but I came here to stay. I want to find out more about Osirion...and myself." With that said, Benedictus makes a move to join the others, but then suddenly stops and looks Nidhi in the eye. "I know you don't trust me. I don't know why do you do, but I know you do. Anyway, just know that I trust you, which is why I'm going to ask you if you could help me finding a place to stay in Osirion. I was thinking Sothis. Do you know someone there?"

Benedictus smiles radiantly at seeing his allies uncovering two hidden doors. "Well done Florence, Zilchus" he says, patting both on them on the shoulders. He waits together with the others while Nidhi tries to disarm the trap she found on the secret door.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Nidhi fails, at first, to disarm the trap, though she manages to not trigger it as well. In the end though, the trap slides neatly to the side, and the door is opened!

You peer inside and see a long thin hallway, damp and moist, with yet another door at the far end.

Ignore the blue overhead in the middle of the hallway. That's the watercourse for the trap in the sarcophagus chamber. You do not see it here, it is several feet above you in the complex.

Zilchus sheathes his dagger and reattached his weapon cord as Nidhi seems to be making progress.

"Nice work," Zilchus says moving forward.

I'm sure I could have done that given enough tries.

Zilchus moves forward (when others are ready) to the next chamber/room. Finding a door, he examines it, then opens it when others are ready.

Feeling bold and willing to help his allies despite his lack of resources, Benedictus tries to circumvent the cobra with a surprisingly nimble move. I still don't understand. If it's Crit x3, are three rolls to hit required? Or do you count the same initial damage roll three times?

Ouch!” Benedictus cries in pain as the iron cobra plunges his teeth into his flesh. “That hurts!” His view obfuscated, his senses growing number at every second, Benedictus realizes that the construct must have injected his poison into him with its bite. How reckless I’ve been…

Fortunately, the Osirian blood flowing in his veins protects Benedictus from the worst effects of the poison—his forebears must have been constantly exposed to the perilous venoms of the creatures of the desert. Or at least this is what I like to believe… Benedictus fondly pats his familiar’s satchel, and steps back. Althoug not poisoned, he’s badly wounded. “Don’t worry about me”, he mutters to Florence as he backs off wobbly. Now at a safe distance, Benedictus slowly loads his crossbow, as though the very act of doing so caused him a huge physical pain…which actually does.

And yes, cover penalties still apply, -4 to hit when someone is in your way. There is a feat that eliminates that, but it's higher level... Improved Precise Shot (link)
