Two more hours until the game Germany - Argentina begins. Right now, we have quite the heat wave in Germany, opposite to the weather in South Africa. (Coming close to 100 °Fahrenheit today, which is very extraordinary for Germany - over 90°F is unusual even in high summer. I´m hearing the ambulance sirens all day, probably a lot of heatstrokes. Folks here aren´t used to that heat, and air condition is normally not used in private homes, and not in all offices)

Germany are certainly dominant in this game. Great striker line and incredible back line (the New Berlin Wall?). Congrats to any German fans on this board.

wuhuuuuuuuu,Germany 4 Argentina 0
Paul the Octopus was right again !!

Holy Crap Germany.

Great game.

But I'd argue that Argentina lost perhaps more than Germany won. Poor coaching for Argentina -- it's a shame for their team that they had a player instead of a coach as their skipper.

The Exchange

Is it over yet? The 11th is soooo far away.

Shame about Müller, but I still think they beat Spain.
So will Uruguay be able to beat the Netherlands? I don't thinik so, but it would be fun.

+1 - I'm super proud of Germany's performance; they've been playing fantastically

What a game! Noboby would have guessed that result. And they were still hungry after the 4:0, they could have scored the 5:0 also.
The german team is the best we ever had, I´d say. Everything is possible now. It is a young team and can have a great future.
Müller won´t be playing against Spain, but that means that he will be even more hungry in the Final. The team needs a way to neutralize David Villa, one of the best players in the World Cup.

Heh, Brazil really seem to have squandered their chances; although the deliberate and malicious intent to cause bodily harm with their shoe spikes is grossly poor sportsmanship.

Shame about Ghana.

When this competition started nobody would have taken odds on three out off the last four teams being European..and to be honest the standard of football in the group stages wasn't really that inspiring.

Well done Germany..I hope you win it..even withy wierdo left wingers in your own country telling people not to support the team and tearing down your flag because you should not have any pride in your country.

Offtopic: What makes this even more weird is that several flag owners who had their flags torn down from their cars and houses were Turkish or Lebanese people... Quite a lot of them live in those parts in Berlin where many of those extreme left weirdos also live, as rent is rather cheap in these parts (for Berlin, anyway).

I witnessed another strange behaviour by some leftish people: there was a mobile chicken vendor parked on their curb. These lefties were enraged about it, as it partially blocked their property (understandably), but what had they up in arms and, according to their spokesman, ready to seriously damage this chicken vendor, was the fact that they were all vegans and absolutely outraged by this vendor in front of their property. They could not stand the presence of the vendor, and demanded a big excuse of the "guilty" party.
Well, I´ve absolutely nothing against vegans, but how do these folks go about in their daily life? Smash every butcher, restaurant, fast food shop and what have you? But then, the ideas of fighting against "capitalism" these guys have is burning cars and attacking policemen (oh, but they are not above looting a "capitalist" shop when convenient). IMO, these political extremists (if they are even political at all), no matter if left or right, are not quite right in their mind.

Because they are hoodlums trying to justify their urge to smash and trash potential victims.

Yes there are Dutch on the boards :-)

Bit of a weird finish but congrats to the Dutch in their Finals appearance.

Well, perhaps we will see a rematch of the 1974 final Netherlands - Germany. I hope that the German teams continues to play like they did in the last games, and win against Spain. Anyway, I can´t wait to see the game tonight.

Grand Lodge

Tonight is going to be a fascinating game. If Germany is the next opponent of the Netherlands, we will win. If Spain is the one, we'll lose.

Germany plays the best soccer, so will never be champions.

Unfortunately, paul the octopus has predicted Germany's defeat. :( Sorry, good luck next cup.

And on your previous topic...I was living in Germany for the last cup, and i found it so bizarre that people were worried about flying the German flag. I got the feeling that they were scared that if they started showing national pride in any shape or form they'd have a repeat of WWI/WWII (or something like that...didn't really make sense to me).

Yeah, it was spoon-fed to Germans over the course of several decades that (inflated) national pride was one reason for war, and showing pride in Germany was indeed seen as being akin to being a Nazi. Thus, Germans were afraid of flying their own colors. Even today, if somebody has a flagpole on his property and flies a german flag (outside the World Cup, of course), most people would think that he is a strange person somehow.

Similar is the reasoning that german soldiers should not be deployed outside german borders, which has changed slowly over the past 10 or 15 years. This is probably an overreaction to the fact that Germany instigated two world wars - if Germans are known for anything, it is thorougness, and so, we did everything to ensure that Germany would not be considered a threat to anybody anymore, and went over the top there again. (as an aside, Germany as a nation did not really exist until 1871, and after that, Germany tried to "catch up" in being a nation with France, Great Britain, Austria etc. Again, we went over the top there, fueled by an easy victory over the "hereditary enemy" France.)

Today, it is discussed if the german Bundeswehr should be converted into a professional army, and general conscription should be dropped. One argument against this is that in the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), the professional army was uncontrollable, a "state within a state", and helped Hitlers ascension. While this is true, this argument does not take into consideration that many army officers of that time were old Imperial soldiers, who believed that the political opposition back at home was one reason for the lost war, and who had no use for democracy. Today, the situation is completely different, of course. But still, this is hotly debated ever since German soldiers are deployed outside our borders.

You are basically right, the Bundeswehr is a defensive army. This is fixed in the Grundgesetz. But it is meant to defend Germany and her citizens against attacks, external threats and political blackmailing. Now, what constitutes an attack or threat is obviously subject to debate. Some argue that the attacks of 9/11 constitute an attack on the very foundation of our society, and thus, fighting terrorism is defending out freedom (very shortened). As a former secretary of defense put it: Germanys freedom is also defended at the Hindukusch (answering the question how Germanys engagement in Afghanistan fits to the defensive order of the Bundeswehr). This is hotly debated, especially if german soldiers die there (or kill innocent bystanders).

Wow, just wow. I can't believe someone would get that upset and take it that far and to refer to your flag as " “black, red and gold rags?"

Who are these "German left-wing activists?"

IMO, absolute nutcases. They propagate some sort of socialism and want to destroy the democracy and capitalism for an egalitarian system (never mind that this did not work before...). Until this utopia is reached, they attack policemen (representatives of the oppressive system), burn cars (symbols for capitalism) or steal and destroy flags. Crazy bunch of idiots, if you ask me.

Off topic question I've been wondering for a while ...

Why are you called Dutch, but the country is called Holland ... and also called The Netherlands??? What is the actual, official name of the country?!?!?!

Oh, and again, congrats! Can't wait to see the Dutch ... er, Holland ... er, the Netherlands take on Spain or Germany. Either way, it will be a great game!!!

(Kingdom of the) Netherlands (Low Country) is the offical name, Holland are only two provinces (similar if somebody refers to Great Britain when saying England - pars pro toto). Dutch comes from the same root as Deutsch (German), from diutisc, meaning (language) of the common folk. German and Dutch are closely related languages, especially Low German and Dutch.

One of the most boring halves of soccer I have seen in the World Cup yet. Spanish tactics of Tic Tac Toe has slowed this game to a crawl. *Patiently waiting for a German superb counter attack to break this game wide open.*

Wow, the Spanish played all over Germany. Germany didn't look sharp at all. Congrats to the Spanish fans.

Spain was the better team. The German team did not play good enough, and might even have lost higher than 0:1. Congrats to Spain.
Heres to hoping that Germanys young team will have another go, in 2014 in Brazil. *Raises mug of German beer*

Stefan

Congratulations to Spain.
Spain was the better team. Our young players seemed to be intimidated and did not play as good as they could. Spain never led the control of the match slip.

One way or the other, we will have a new World Champion this year.
It is the Netherlands 3th final, Spains 1th

For the not so big Footbal fans, the Champions in chronological order:
Urugay
Italy
Italy
Urugay
Germany
Brasil
Brasil
England
Brasil
Germany
Argetina
Italy
Argentina
Germany
Brasil
France

Viva Spain!
I was sad to see the Dutch team play so dirty, but I guess that was partly the fault of the referee.

I just heard there was a terrorist bombing at the Soccer. Post Finals descends in to chaos.

It was in Uganda. Most likely connected to the presence of Ugandan troops acting as peacekeepers in Somalia. They did target people watching the finals at a couple of clubs, but it's actually at the football.

Still stupid thing to happen. THough if it had happened in South Africa - an a Stadium it would have been a devastating blow to future events.

Well, they did not play THAT bad that calling them gay is warranted.

(SCNR, even if it might be seen as offending. Blame the heat in my office today - about 92°F/33°C and no air condition. Being on the top floor does not help any.)
