The source of the emotions is the altar itself - or possibly something in or under or on it. Arisira rolls a Knowledge Religion and her minimum result reveals that ifnyou destroy the altar it will end the effect.

The screams ring out a terrible rumble echoes out from each of your stomachs a sudden gluttony overcoming your senses.

The halfling, seeing the commotion erupt around her, re-draws the slender oaken wand from her belt. Waving it, she reaches out to touch Valin with the abjuration magic.

Protection from Evil:
This spell wards a creature from attacks by evil creatures, from mental control, and from summoned creatures. It creates a magical barrier around the subject at a distance of 1 foot. The barrier moves with the subject and has three major effects.

First, the subject gains a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves. Both these bonuses apply against attacks made or effects created by evil creatures.

Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person). This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell. The effects resume when the duration of this spell expires. While under the effects of this spell, the target is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over the target. This spell does not expel a controlling life force (such as a ghost or spellcaster using magic jar), but it does prevent them from controlling the target. This second effect only functions against spells and effects created by evil creatures or objects, subject to GM discretion.

You follow the compass down a series of alleyways and corridors until you face a statue stands in defiance against the ravages of time, its granite arm raised in a silent salute. A glint of light reflects off the statue’s rocky belt. The statue’s massive stone legs rest on a decorative, two-tiered, white marble dais signifying royalty. Thousands of words and glyphs are etched along the circumference of this dais.

You stand currently about 30 feet away from the statue as the compass points directly towards it.

Mak'da and Arisira's wands send enough ambient positive energy into the area to calm the haunt for now - giving you ample time to allow Valin to come to his senses and slice the statue to bits, which does seem to alleviate the area of its hauntedness.

Leaving just one direction on the compass for you to go, you head that way.

The compass leads you to the blasted shell of a large structure dominates the northeast corner of the ruin site. Severe damage has laid waste to the area, leaving it quite unrecognizable. Loose rubble lies strewn about the remains of half-collapsed walls, and large tears in the building’s floor provide evidence of a long-forgotten earthquake.

It looks to Arisira that the foundations of this wall were shaken hard by an ancient earthquake with massive damage done to this building as a result.

But both of them know that Earthquakes should be exceedingly rarely here as there aren't any known fault lines here.

Haunts are tricky things and ones this old make it much more difficult to hve any idea what has created them or how they might be put to rest. Cure spells are probably still our best bet.

Mak'da will fly into the room, avoiding the cracks in the floor.

As Mak'da flies into the room there is not all the much of consequence in the ruined chamber. It appears to have some broken benches and little hand held pieces of slate, most of them shattered but a few still in tact. One, still in tact, appears to show some basic math done in Jistkan numerals.

Perception: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (6) + 27 = 33

However in the air before she lands she hears sounds of muffled cries coming from beneath the wall as she passes.

An unnatural rift opens up a 40 foot wide chasm and the loud screams of children begging for help as rocks fall on their chests fills her field of vision and that of the rest of the party who witnesses this unfolding from afar.

Before Mak'da can really do much of anything, the fissure closes with the sounds of countless children dying from suffocation filling her ear for the next few minutes.
