Does anyone have a torch or something Kitoro could use as a weapon? Will a torch do damage to a swarm?

Unfortunately no ...in D&D 3.5 there was language that both torches and flaming weapons did damage to swarms but they took it out in Pathfinder. James Jacobs is quoted as saying this was not their intention but, never the less..it is not included in any errata or FAQ threads therefore the raw remains "Swarms of dine or diminutive creatures cannot be harmed by weapons, spells, or effects that target an individual creature" That means Petrok cannot use his touch of flame ability that works like a flaming weapon (even though it does energy damage) and you cannot use a torch.. because they target individual creatures.. bottom line is they need to add this exception back in to the rules but there is nothing official (that I have found anyway)

I would support that motion. Swarms are tricky as they are.

Hi GM trying to get the initiative order in my head can you re-post it please cause it's a little confusing ( I think it says round three but it must be past that because the swarm has now damaged me 3 times):Here's a recap of the game thread as I understand it:
surprise round: swarm acts and does damage (7) to : Nectanbo and Steinfaust (swarms can only do dmg. at the end of their movement round or turn if they don't move but they make up for this by auto hitting)
the initiative listed is:
Petrok 22
Faeran 19
Steinfaust 18
Kitaro 16
Nectanebo 11
Swarm 9
Charna 8
round 1:
1st:Petrok cast burning hands doing 4dmg to swarm (it must have saved) and 4 dmg to Steinfaust (he saved)
2nd:Faeran has a held action to throw A fire
3rd:Steinfaust slips and falls (but cannot use his remaining move action to stand because nauseated )
4th:Kitaro starts Bardic performance
5th: Nectabo heals Steinfaust for 9hp using use magic device and his wand (Steinfaust should be only -2hp at this point..) then moves out of the swarm
6th swarm does 23hp to steinfaust ( he should be at -25 He had 27 hp to start so he has 2hp: (the game-play entry had him at -7hp) GM you had him go unconscious here..unless he went into this battle with less than his max hp )
7th: Charna acrobatics in to the swarm and heals Steinfaust for 3hp (by my count he should be at +5hp but I could have missed something did he still have con dmg from the rot grubs?)
note Faeran's readied action still in play
Round 2
1st: Faeran uses the alchmest fire dmg. swarm -1hp (swarm should only be at -5hp it saved my burning hands 6hp dmg+50% =9hpdmg save for 1/4 =4hp but it may have taken an extra hp from the splash of the alchemist fire to be at -6hp) dino gets splashed for -1hp (it's first (dmg) and Steinfaust -1hp ( again by my count Steinfaust may be up still with 4hp)
2nd. Petrok drinks his potion (bears endurance) and moves in to the room ending his turn in the swarm (still no dmg. here swarm can only dmg on it's turn)
3rd. By my count steinfaust would have had a chance to move here but as play went he failed a con check
4th. it seems like Kitaro continued bardic performance?
5th. Nectanbo: Nectanbo looks like he moved and succeeded a knowledge nature check
6th: Swarm does 8hp damage both Steinfaust and Petrok damaged (unless Steinfaust was up Petrok this is his first HP dmg )( don't know where Charna was in relation to the swarm but she should have been close to Steinfaust as she had just healed him in round 1)
7th: Charna does 7hp damage to swarm with burning hands (after adding +50%) swarm saves (so only -3hp dmg) so it should be at either -8hp or -9hp.
Note GM you have the swarm attacking Petrok an additional time here so I'll count it as round 3 when we get to the swarms turn.
Round 3 This is where it gets really messed up because GM calls for Charna to act again! I'll put Charna's dmg on her turn.
1:Faeran: readies a throw when the dino moves
2. Petrok : takes out a potion of levitate and drinks it
3. Steinfaust (dead but well only if he had con or hp dmg going in)
4. Kitaro : attempts handle animal on dino fails
5. Nectabo: readies an action to heal Charna?
6. Swarm: Yum munch on Petrok for dmg-13 (Petrok now at -21hp dmg started with 37hp so has 16hp left at the end of swarm round 3) ( Charna should be near but the swarm seems satisfied with only Petrok)
7. Charna (this entry was posted before any other in round 3!) burning hands with intense focus should be 12hp dmg total for a swarm (swarm saved so another -6hp for swarm leaving it at either -14hp or -15hp from it's orginal hp)
Round 4 Ok so GM it's still listed as round 3 and the actions clearly dictate it should be round four..You have the swarm damaging me before I can act..Kitaro is trying another handle animal check and Necentabo is trying to aid her. Petrok clearly made his distraction rolls so he should be able to levitate and pull out his wand before he's injured. So listed below is who has acted in round 4 and who's turn it is.
1. Faeran (continues to hold readied action as his condition has not been met)
2. Petrok levitates covered by ants and draws his wand (doing 5hp to the swarm swarm is either at -19hp or -20hp now)
3. Steinfaust (still dead according to game play)
4. Kitaro ( tries to handle animal again but doesn't re-roll and is doing bardic performance note: it looks like in round 3 Kitaro was thinking of doing ear piercing scream and found out is was not good so forgot to roll 2nd time on handle animal)
5. Nectabao: Nectabo abandons readied action to aid Kitaro and fails
6. swarm : does 9 dmg and although it's not stated it must have moved in to dino's space as well . Petrok saves the distraction but is down to just 7hp the swarm apparently moved in to the dino's spot durring this time doing only 6hp to the dino? (guess when it's divided it rolls separate dmg now?) dino fails save but Kitro does saving finale.
7. OK it should be Chara's turn...next round will be round 5..
OK to the GM your doing a good job with a tough combat and a difficult monster to GM (i'm loving it!) But I think you need to wait for the players to act in order a little more because it's crucial to the characters that are actually in the swarm.
To the playes FFFF the dang dinosaur and start throwing alchemist fire! it's a miraculous this thing has swarmed Chara yet(the only one doing dmg to it)! Faeran please throw that alchemist fire right away! lamp oil works too if you take a full round action to draw it and prepare a fuse...Kitaro restart your bardic song and get away from that thing. Nectabo I really don't know what you can do other than get right behind Chara with your wand and heal her if the swarm starts swarming her. Chara burn this thing!
Petrok Kaznikh

Yes 2 rounds of readying action needs to stop..that dino is not that important especially if Steinfaust is truly dead...I realize it's been a confusing battle but this is a tough creature and we are fighting far from optimum ...can we please just wait until the player has acted so they don't miss a turn to damage this thing? By game play Faeran has held alchmist fire for 12 seconds and Kitrao keeps saying here kitty kitty to a dino that doesn't really mater...just fyi while ever body is holding actions or trying to save the dino..if my character doesn't shake off these ants (about a 50/50 shot) I'll go unconscious loose my concentration and fall strait back in to them...that's 2 characters dead because no one wants to hurt an animal companion of an already dead character..
Kitoro
|
Actually, Kit only called the dino one round and she had nothing else to do. She called for some alchemists fire or acid but no providers :( She still has nothing she can do except perform and provide that extra ST. Calling the dino does not eat into that. But I'm thinking that letting the dino be the target is not a bad idea. Better it than us. One more thing, I agree about frying the ants. But, let the person with the best aim throw the thing. We need a hit. I think that would be Charna if she does not have another burning hands, but I think she has one more. If she does then Kit has a good arm. Also, if anyone has guidance, cast it on whoever does the throw.
Petrok Kaznikh
|
OK Kit if u only called the dino one round then your bardic performance should be back up in round four correct? that means +1 extra dmg from the alchmist fire! ( I just realized where the the ant swarm should be at -21hp for sure because the bardic song was going the first time too! splash=1 +bardic song dmg=1+ 50%= 3hp dmg no save for the ant swarm on alchmist fire.) So Faeren remember u have Bardic song and heroism giving you an extra +3 to hit the swarm even if u miss you'll do a min of 3hp dmg!
Petrok Kaznikh
|
kit the best you can do right now is stay back and keep that song going..I may need saving finale for a fort save vs distraction..and the +1 dmg that the alchemist fire gets actually translates to +2 when it misses..and sometimes when it hits so it's valuable..Besides if this thing beats us we'll need someone to run away and tell the Pathfinders where to find our dead bodies! LOL
Petrok Kaznikh
|
GM on my turn if I use the wand to heal myself then, drop my Falchion, and dust of the ants (for 1/2 a round); will I finish dusting off the ants middle of the my next round (assuming I survive/stay conscious, one more attack by the ants)? The premise being two 1/2 rounds, make for one full round?

I also have a whip. She could grab you and pull you over.

I also have a whip. She could grab you and pull you over.
If Petrok is able to shake off these ants..perhaps I'll take u up on that..maybe keep ur song going and draw ur whip this round(5)?
Kitoro
|
The whip is drawn already. It is her main weapon. but starting a performance and using the whip are both standard actions so she would have to choose.
Minor correction to timeline. Kit's actions:
1) start performance
2) twiddle thumbs, and fingers, continue performance
3) more twiddling, continue performance
4) call dino, continue performance
4) immediate: saving finale
5) start new performance or use whip
Also remember she has the wand of CMW with 5 charges. Another potential actions she could do.

Wow, 10 posts.
Ok, so 1st for your comment on Steinfaust's HP upon entering combat.
I had him at 21/24, since the encounter with the rotgrubs.
Rotgrubs deal 9 con dmg, which means -4 a/lvl on 3 lvls.
His HP goes to 15/15.
Petrok deals 4 fire dmg.
Killing the rotgrubs with fire dealt an extra d6 (5) fire dmg.
Charna cast burning hands for 7, but that became unneeded.
6/15
Post combat, 2 items of Lesser restoration were used to fix 6 con dmg.
That returns max HP to 24.
2 wand charges of CLW for 15, brings him to 21/24.
From there you went on towards the room where you found Gra'kk.
Surprise round, swarm deals 7, Steinfaust also became nauseated. (14/24)
* Round 1, swarm deals 23 dmg to Steinfaust, due to extra 3d6 vs nauseated. (-9/24)
* Round 1, Charna heals 3. (I made a mistake, saying stable at -4, but that's -6)
* Round 2, Faeran alchemist fire splashes 1. (-7/24)
*Round 2, swarm deals 13 dmg to Steinfaust. (-20/24) Con being 14, he's dead.
The init stuff will come in a new post.
| GM Chyro |
We are still in round 3, actually.
One of the swarm's abilities is clinging, from which any creature being swarmed, that leaves the swarm, takes along enough ants that deal 3d6 at the end of their turns.
2 rounds of swarm dmg, and once because of the above after you hovered out of their reach.
When it comes to full round actions, devided over 2 turns, is that even an option? If you can show me where, i'd allow it.
But regardless of if you could or not, they deal dmg at the end of any turn they are still on you.
Petrok Kaznikh

OK guys when u attack the ants could u please target the square under me so it burns these ants off? It's only AC:5 to target a square and these things obviously have a high touch AC..I'll take the one splash dmg..really I will..it will hurt the ants clinging to me much more..
baring that, when the ants are dead if you cant burn um off (like ur out of burning hands or alchemist fire); can I get an aid another for my reflex save (ie. someone goes up next to me and brushes off my legs while i'm hovering); Or maybe hit with a wand of cure lite wounds?
Petrok Kaznikh
|
If someone can get to it check Steinfaust gear he may have alchemist fire or something .. ps I could really use some healing

Brought this up over here in this thread because it is meta gaming pure and simple. However, considering the out-right viciousness of this encounter..I've no problem looking up rules. GM have the utmost respect how you are running this encounter (playing it tough and fair) but,
I do think you might have missed this.
Faeran's flask hits a wall, splashing the swarm and Kitoro for 1.
Kitoro moves out of the swarm, and it deals 1d6 ⇒ 1 dmg to them.
Oh gods, the humanity of it.
At the end of her turn, it deals 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3) = 12 dmg to her, as the ants keep clinging onto her.
GM here is why I think..the ants would not be clinging to Kitoro, if they received any splash dmg at all. Here's the relevant passage:
High wind or any amount of damage from an area effect destroys all clinging ants. The save DC is Dexterity-based. (found under PRD Army Ant Swarm)
Acid is an area affect weapon and splash damage is by it's nature area affect damage. If Kitoro was hit with splash damage all the clinging ants would have dropped off and died (therefore negating the 12 dmg. she took that round).
Not meaning to second guess you, just a long brutal combat where one character already died and two more are near death and we are fighting for every resource HP ect.. My guess is this is at least a CR 6 with the terrain and I would lean towards a CR 7..it's just too brutal but..very exciting!
| GM Chyro |
Alright.
Kitoro's still pretty injured though.
Nectanebo the Vulture
|
Charna, can't you Channel Negative Energy?
Yes, it might be dangerous for us, but it looks like our best shot at this point.
Kitoro
|
Alright.
Kitoro's still pretty injured though.
I'll take it! I may just live through this.
Petrok Kaznikh

I've only been in one other PFS scenario where a PC died..this doubled that in stakes and excitement. May Steinfaust rest in peace..
| GM Chyro |
Don't dismiss him quickly. He might still have money or items to sell. Plus Charna offered financial aid.
But i know the feeling. I've had my share of PC deaths while GM'ing, every one is an unfortunate too many for my liking.
Petrok Kaznikh
|
What's the cost of a raise dead?
| GM Chyro |
About 5420 gp, or 16 PP. I put it up earlier in discussion i think.
Kitoro
|
Its not really worth it to pay cash until about level 4-5, in my opinion and you won't have the PP until level 4 unless you have not traded PP for any wands. His character is right on the edge.
Petrok Kaznikh

By the way, she has been almost totally in her natural form this whole time. I'd just assume any Kitsune would prefer to use their natural form unless tactics called for something different. I'm surprised none of the red-blooded males has offered to share a bedroll :)
It's probably a PC thing.. Paizo threads can be quite touchy about such things. Besides, when I was a teenager it was fun playing out opposite sex relationships ect.. in fantasy roll-play. When you know nothing about what real relationships are about; all you have to draw on is troupes or stereotypes. Now that I'm older and married, I just find it awkward to "fantasy flirt" as it were. It's a little to close to online chatting with a stranger for my taste.
Having said that, I married an Asian girl so Kitoro's profile picture falls in to a solid "8" out of "10" for me. Petrok however, is played as moody and sullen (but I did imagine him as hetro.) I imagine it would take a special female character, to draw him out of his shell and love him as the miss-understood, 1/2 orc that he is.
Nectanebo the Vulture

Misunderstood, anal-retentive Half-Orc, no less - not an easy man for most to relate to!
I'm not a sexual creature in real life, personally, so that's not something most of my characters do.

I lived in mainland China for 5 years 2007-2012 met my wife over there. Great place great people. But, buy a good air purifier if you're going to live in one of the bigger cities..(and almost all of of westerners who work over there do live in bigger cities..only missionaries and aid workers generally live in the more rural areas)
| GM Chyro |
Oh, i remember that. Especially when arriving at Hong Kong.
In fall 2012 i went to China, and last april to Japan.
Beautiful, but some strong contrasts within each.

Good news for Steinfaust (as well as the rest of us)!
As long as he's got 8 Prestige to spare, affording the rest of it should be easy for the rest of us (then again, he's of the Scarab Sages, so if he does have 8 Prestige, he could just become "Risen Guard" anyway).
| GM Chyro |
Hey guys.
Pardon for the lack of an update yesterday.
It was my birthday, so my time spent at the laptop was sporadic
Faeran

well, happy birthday!!!
Kitoro
|
Hope you had fun.
| GM Chyro |
Yes.
Though part of the family were prevented from attending in the weekend.
Better planning about the time next year. :/
I got money mostly, a bag of chocolates from my little twin cousins, and a game on steam from my brother.
Money is going to processing photos, from my vacation to Japan, into bigger pictures that i can put on my wall. :D

money is great.. chocolate is always good.. unless you're diabetic.. .or a dog...

Hey GM first, belated happy birthday..
Second could you give me a rough guesstimate...of how much longer this scenario is going to run? I have Petrok signed-up for a game-day 6, second session game. I need to know if I should back out. I'm sure the GM would be cool with a day or two waiting on Petrok. But, anything more than that would be un-fair to the rest of the players...So do you think we'll be all wrapped up by Oct. 8th? Or should I back out of the game so the GM can recruit another?
| GM Chyro |
There's encounters left down here.
I'd say consider it to go either way. If i were on my previous time table, i'd be in position to make more updates in a week.
Petrok Kaznikh

Ok I'll back out and let another player at it. Having a lot of fun in this one! Thx for the update

I forgot to mention Charna in gameplay.
Whoops.

CAn you guys please block Mrs. Horse lady from pursuing me with her horse? if you block the Hallway in the east she can't pursue me without dismounting..I have no chance against all three and they are intent on murdering me? Also could some one rush over and heal me( probably need it after the AoO's) or support me in anyway? I've got some great stuff to combat this thing if I don't have them all over me! Please get over here and tie up that Tien banshee!
| GM Chyro |
Petrok, to your question of running, i looked back up the Run feat.
Corners are not mentioned in its description, it mentions increased running speed, and remaining dex bonus to AC.
Running is restricted/impossible by difficult terrain, however.
Looking back on running itself, it only mentions the increased movement speed. On the movement page i searched 'corners', to no result.
| GM Chyro |
Concerns
I can totally understand your worries.
They didn't appear out ofthe stairs, they were standing at the far east wall.
Their init being high was a bad factor, getting them near you that 1st round.
Their own speed is average, yet they are not hindered by what type of armor they are. But by taking a run action they were able to reach you.
Them being moderately intelligent is mainly the reason for doing so.
An average skeleton mindlessly double moves, while an intelligent creature (of the appropriate sort, and these were soldiers) knows running means more ground covered.
By no means did you tick me off. :(
Petrok Kaznikh
|
OK I was hoping this wasn't just something I remembered from 3.5..looks like they left it the same. Per page 188 core rule book.
You can run as a full-round action. If you do, you do not
also get a 5-foot step. When you run, you can move up to
four times your speed in a straight line (or three times
your speed if you’re in heavy armor). You lose any Dexterity
bonus to AC unless you have the Run feat
Also if they are in heavy armor they only run at x3 speed. Sorry to not let this go but you are playing this very tough and I actually want my character to live if possible.
