The party comes to the only door they haven't opened yet. The room ahead is silent, but the sound of someone pounding against a wooden door can be heard from deeper into the cave.

Silvio takes a look, and if all is clear will open the door.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

-Posted with Wayfinder

Silvio carefully inspects the door, and, finding no traps or sign of anything suspicious, opens the door carefully, peering into the next room...

Repeating Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
Confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

... and is immediately met with a crossbow bolt grazing his neck, just barely missing his jugular. 4 Damage. That could have gotten really nasty.

Silvio's fort save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 OK.

Krojun: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14
Staryth: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12
Silvio: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Nicolai: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Derro: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Repeating Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7
Silvio's fort save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 Uh oh.
Str Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2

...a second one follows through, embedding itself in Silvio's chest, and leaving him feeling somewhat numb from the toxin coursing through his system.

Through the haze of pain, Silvio takes note of the room, a rectangular laboratory. Some wooden tables are stacked with vials, beakers, and other alchemical gear, though the southmost table is heaped with broken vials and leans awkwardly on a patched-up leg. Three large cauldrens sit against the east wall, one of them upended. He spots a derro hidden under the second table, who had eluded his sight until it opened fire with a repeating crossbow. It glares menacingly at him.

A tunnel seems to extend southwards from the room. The pounding noise from earlier seems to emanate from further within. Judging by the sound, the creature beating against wood there certainly is no mere human.

Party is up, I would appreciate if someone took Nicolai's action for him.

I checked the map but it looks like it hasn't been updated.

Krojun bellows a thundering verse lending strength and courage to his companions.

Inspire courage!

Hearing his companion's cry, Nicolai leans around the corner and flicks an unerring bolt of magic at his attacker.

Magic Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Oh, oops. I updated the map late at night. I did reveal the room... but I forgot to move the tokens and add the enemy.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

As the battle begins and his mind clears a little, Silvio notices the presence of another hidden door.

Just getting that out of the way since the map kind of spoils it.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

Wait, the Derro goes after both Silvio and Nicolai in initiative, right? Does Silvio get to move and attack before being struck by the second bolt?

Silvio hurries into the room, moving past the Derro to cut off her exit. Draws an AOO. He then slashes at the derro that surprised him!

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25; Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 +1 Damage if he has not been struck by the second bolt yet.
Crit?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19; Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 +1 Damage if he has not been struck by the second bolt yet.

Oh... darn. Here's what happened: When I first wrote that post, I missed that the first bolt was a crit. The added rolls from that shifted everything else, including initiative. Yes, Silvio and Nicolai go before the derro. My apologies for that bit of confusion.

Wow, that's a nasty hit right there. Silvio, that second bolt didn't happen, you can mark off the damage and poison. The derro is in no position to make that shot.

Nicolai's missile hits home, distracting the female derro enough for Silvio to follow and deliver a nasty strike to her thraot.

Having taken very serious damage, the panicked Derro attempts to flee through the room's eastern exit, provoking an AoO from Silvio.

Withdrawing

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

Alas, she manages to avoid his strike, and makes a getaway, trailing splatters of blood all the way along, shouting in Aklo.

Aklo:
"Ack! Intruders! Intruders have come!"

Nice. Who is up?

The entire party is, seeing as the Derro just acted.

It looks like Silvio didn't include Inspire Courage so he should have done 2 more damage.

Krojun retrieves the wand and steps up alongside the wounded duelist. ”Careful friend. There might be more of them.”

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Stopping inspire for now.

Nicolai moves forward and fires off another bolt of force.

Magic Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Nicolai doesn't have line of sight to the Derro, and, sadly can't position himself in order to do so with one move action. I have taken note of the extra damage, though it doesn't affect the situation at hand.

He'll double move then.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

"That's exactly why we need to stop her!"

Silvio moves forward to pursue. Moved 30 feet - waiting to decide his standard action based on what he sees. I also moved Krojun and Nicolai, though Nicolai may just disappear!

The derro is running down the hallway, trying to flee.

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

Very sorry folks, having a bit of trouble with my Roll20 account :(

Staryth attempts to give chase, moving as quickly as he can, rash perhaps, but everyone says stopping the derro is important

What's the problem you're having?

So... Nicolai vanishes into the aether.

The Derro flees deeper into the cave. As she comes to a tunnel split, she hesitates for a moment, then takes a right. You hear her call out in Aklo.

"Is okay. Me take care of them. Ohohoh!" A deep voice bellows in a simpleton's common, punctuating its sentence with a deep, cavernous laugh.

???: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Silvio is up, and only Silvio. Another entity has joined the battle.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

Upon hearing the voice, Silvio sneaks further forward just around the corner, hoping to take the oncoming creature by surprise. Hoping to get a sneak attack.

Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Readied Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15; Damage, with sneak: 1d8 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + (3, 4) + 2 = 16

Silvio moves forth silently. He hears no sign that he's been seen, but he doesn't hear anyone approaching.

Krojun and Staryth are up.

Oh! I forgot to describe.

The hallway going down from the room where the party was ambushed leads to a closed door which is barred shut with several thick planks of wood. Vigorous pounding comes from the other side, which, by the sound, leads you to think whatever is behind it can at least match Krojun in strength, but it does not appear to be making any progress in barging the door down.

Krojun moves forward and takes a defensive stance. Seeing Silvio poised to pounce, he keeps his distance for now for fear of ruining the ambush.

Can't really get close enough to ready an attack so just move and total defense.

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

Sometimes with the map, but now its logging in. I had to reset my password so I guess it's me.

Staryth moves to Krojun's side ready to work with him.
I'm still having a bit of trouble making sense of the map even while looking at it (Sorry) so for now I'm just going to shadow Krojun

???: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
???: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Peeking around the corner to see what is going on ahead, Silvio sees the Derro from earlier trying to sneak by through the upcoming fork in the road, heading for a separate path.

Silvio's stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Derro's Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9

She, however, doesn't seem to notice him as she silently creeps along the tunnel.

Silvio is up.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

Seeing the wounded Derro attempting to sneak by, Silvio will attempt to step out and strike! Still hoping to be stealthed.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22; Damage: 1d8 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + (3, 4) + 2 = 11

Silvio creeps up on the derro and puts his sword through her back unexpectedly. She gives a gurgle and collapses to the ground.

Nothing of note seems to be happening down the tunnel. Silvio, now able to see further into the room, sees that it is rather large. He catches a glimpse of a pit against the back wall.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

Silvio motions to the others that the way is clear, and encourages them to follow. He then heads toward the sound of the bellowing simpleton. Can Silvio tell which way the sound of the bellowing simpleton is coming from? That's where I'd like to go.

It comes from the tunnel south from where you are, in the room you can partially see.

Silvio's Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Silvio's Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Someone's Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Creeping forward, Silvio hears the big lug chuckling to himself and his loud breathing, betraying the latter's position waiting just around the corner. It is plainly obvious to Silvio that their foe isn't aware of his approach.

See the map.

The party notes a small tunnel extending east. However, like the one earlier found in the Derro's barracks, it appears to shrink with distance, and is not lit like the caves. There appears to be very little to be gain from venturing down that path, and between Staryth's breastplate and Krojun's broad shoulders, the party wouldn't get very far out anyway.

Krojun squeezes forward following Silvio's lead. When the rogue stops, he does as well with his axe held at the ready.

Same situation as last time so Total Defense again. Can we get a description for said simpleton?

You'll get a description as soon as he actually comes into view; he has only been heard, not seen, up to now.

We're stalling here, so I'll give a quick rundown of the situation since it seems there's some confusion with the map: Your "enemy" is in another room, just through a corridor, likely waiting to ambush the first person who comes in. In turn order, Staryth is up, then the foe.

Ah, I thought we were waiting on you.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

I just lost track - will wait on Staryth.

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

ugh. my fault then. Sorry.

"I'll try to flush him out, be ready..." He whispers to the others, and then rushes through.

Total Defense for +4 AC even as he risks an AoO, and trying to see what ambush may or may not be waiting

No problem, I was kind of vague, and I think everyone kind of lost track. Time to get this game back on the road.

Staryth enters the south room; his attention is immediately caught by the presence of a few prisoners down in pits about ten feet deep. Emaciated and sickly, they are looking on, silently; likely, they feared retribution if they were to speak up.

However, a significant foe stands between the party and the captives. A massive deformed man, thick with muscle and hideous blubber, towers over Staryth. He is unarmed, but his massive arms and hands look like they'd do quite a lot of damage all their own.

Knowledge(Local) DC18:
You recognize the man as being Ogrekin: Humans with some amount of ogre descendence tend to have some malformations, for good or for bad. In this one's case, a thick layer of fat is likely to make resistant to attacks, but by his speech patterns, it's easy to guess that his brain may not be the most efficient.

"Ohohoh! Intruder! Rolth give me good reward if me catches you!", the large man (henceforth known as Cabbagehead) roars, lunging for Staryth.

AoO Grapple: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

With crushing strength, he seizes the latter by his right wrist and left shoulder, warding himself from the paladin's weapon.

Leveraging his height, Cabbagehead attempts to push Staryth back over the edge of one of the pits, where a woman is looking up, frightened, at the ensuing struggle.

Maintain Grapple: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17

However, the paladin takes advantage of his foe's brutish, unguarded stance, and headbutts him in the chin, then uses the resulting disorientation to break free of the hold.

Party is up.

Hearing Staryth's struggle but not seeing a way to squeeze into the space, Krojun begins a chant to lend the paladin strength.

"Fight on! These monsters cannot keep us from our task!"

Inspire Courage +1

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

Silvio tries to move past the large simpleton without being clobbered himself! Will try to squeeze along the wall to automatically avoid an AOO if possible, but otherwise... Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 - 1 = 28

"Hey Cabbagehead - eat steel!" He thrusts with his sword. Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17; Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Staryth?

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

Staryth tries to make sure folks can join him by moving if need be, and to at least give himself a bit more distance for his weapon.

To hit, Bard bonus included 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Dmg: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Staryth's glaive leaves a deep gash across Cabbagehead's chest, seemingly doing little but making the Ogrekin very, very angry.

"Raah! I break your little stick over your head!"

The lumbering brute advances on Staryth and swings a massive punch at his head.

Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22Damage: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
This is lethal damage, not nonlethal.

The blow connects against Staryth's chin, throwing the paladin against the wall behind him.

Still lacking a way to get into the melee, Krojun drops his axe for his whip while continuing his booming song. During a pause in the chant he cracks his whip and tries to upend the brute pummeling his companion.

Trip (inspire): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 1 = 27

Still inspiring!

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

Sorry, I thought I moved so you'd have a way :(

Staryth feels the world blur for a second, so hard is the strike and scrambles along south the wall to strike again.

To hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Dmg: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

I'm a bit confused, Krojun. From where you were, you could approach and join the melee, no? Not sure who or what was in the way. Also, Staryth, doesn't your weapon have 10 foot reach?

I assumed the square next to Staryth was squeezing. Can Krojun fight from there without penalty?

Yeah, he can. Feel free to rewrite your post. My personal rule of thumb is that if at least half the space is open as opposed to being "in" the wall, then you can freely walk there.

Krojun squeezes in alongside his battered companion. Not one to bring a weapon to bear against an unarmed opponent, the big shoanti forgoes his axe in favor of his own meaty fists.

Unfortunatly it will provoke.

Punch (power attack, inspire): 18 + 7 - 1 - 1 = 23
Damage: 1d3 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 10

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

I moved Krojun 1 square south, to where I think he should be in melee, which sets up a flank with Silvio.

Lacking the honor of his Shoanti companion, Silvio is more than happy to use his blade against the distracted man!

Sneak Attack, Inspire Courage, Flank: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 1 + 2 = 27; Damage, Inspire Courage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 + (4, 1) = 14

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

Yeah, it has reach, that's why I've been backpeddling during the fight with five steps and the like

Staryth can't attack from where he is. In this particular case, this is a moot point.

Krojun's punch lands, causing Cabbagehead to recoil, but the ogrekin recovers faster than the Shoanti had expected.

Unarmed Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25Damage: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Cabbagehead throws a mighty punch that catches Krojun in the chest, knocking the wind out of him, and possibly breaking a rib or two.

Silvio, however, sneaks up from behind and stabs the brute from behind. Cabbagehead gives a gurgle and tries to turn to swat at Silvio, but suddenly appears disoriented. He stumbles for a moment, then collapses, unconscious but stable.

"They... they did it!" One of the prisoners, a feeble, emaciated man, exclaims.

"Did you come to save us?" A young woman asks, briefly interrupted by a sickly cough.

"We're saved! I can't believe it, we're saved! Thank the gods!" another man exclaims.

There are five prisoners total at the bottom of the pits in this room. None of them ding on the paladin-o-meter. Helping them out of the pits is a simple matter. Escorting them out of the Dead Warrens may or may not be as simple.

Male Halfling Warpriest (Divine Commander) 3 | HP 36/36 | AC:20 T:15 FF:16 CMD:16 | F+5 R+6 W+6 | Init+4 | Perc+4 |
Winter:
HP 36/36 (2 nonlethal) | AC:20 T:13 FF:17 CMD:17 | F+4 R+5 W+2 | Perc+5 | Light, Bless, Inspired Rage

"Prisoners?" says Silvio in surprise. "How did you get trapped down here?" He will indeed help them out of the pits, and assess their health and condition. "I don't suppose any of you are in good enough shape to fight?"

After taking a moment to appreciate the solid blow from Cabbagehead, Krojun retrieves the healing wand. He mends his own broken ribs before offering the prisoners a touch of restorative magic.

Any of them suffering serious injuries?

CLW for Krojun: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5) + 2 = 11

CLW for Staryth: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

39 charges remaining.

Male Elf Rogue 1 (AC 18, Saves Fort +4, Ref +9, Will +6 HP 6 out of 15?)

"These poor souls!" Staryth begins to help them out along with Silvio, "I'm Staryth, of Shelyn. Who are you good folk?" He looks over their wounds and state.

Taking 10 on a few heal checks for each soul if possible.
