Yahn scoops up some of the liquid in his aetheric strands. He pulls it up in front of his face, sniffing it, and sticking his finger in to discover it's wet and cool.

While Myaani, Ti-Ti, Echo, and Idris stand near Deris looking at the pool watching the events unfold with Yahn as Thorval leans over the pool looking in.

Yahn, Echo, Myani, Thorval, and Idris are up!

With the fist and the slam of the giant metallic arm, giant water beetle slumps into the pool - dead. Deris watches wide eyed, "Wow, wasn't expectin' that! You think that's been in here the whole time? Could there be more? Might they eat the students?"
Combat over, go ahead investigating the pool.
Echo Miyamoto |
Echo was prepared kick the beetle off of Thorval. Considering she would be simply kicking goo she stops and looks at Mr Deris to ascertain his reaction. An angry moan escapes Echo's Katana when she does not draw it.
GM.Boldr |
Echo SM: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Echo looks towards Deris, who is wide eyed and as surprised as all of you. He looks quite scared actually and his jaw is quivering a bit.
Idris Mael |
"WHAT WAS THAT?!" Idris yells, his veins pulsing from his surge of rage. "There better not be kids down there! What are you trying to pull?!"
Thorval Thorvalson |
"Hey, can anyone use a heal stick? I ain't feelin' too good. That bugger really took a good chomp out of me!" he says, holding out his wand of cure light wounds.
"Oh, and there is a skeleton down there. Looks like he was reaching for somethin' when he died."

Deris, completely taken aback by Idris' outburst cries in clear terror of the large man, "Of course there are children down there! There are children everywhere around here. This is a schoolyard after all!"
He points frantically at the building, "You just saw them! Oh no, are the grounds are being invaded by giant beetles? MY child may even be down there with the others. Did she get eaten? I haven't seen my daughter Cassiel in some time. Are there more? The headmistress will hear from me if my daughter got hurt! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"
Deris was already clearly scared after the Beetle attacked but, Idris' outburst has turned him into a blubbering mess of near terror.
Echo Miyamoto |
"I could try Thorvalson, but I believe Miss Myani is better suited to your needs."
Echo snaps out her Wand of Mage Armor and attempts to use it on her self.

Yahn |
When the beetle bursts from the pool to grab Thorval Yahn emits a sharp startled cry and loses concentration on his aetheric container. The blob of filthy water punctuates the brief battle with a splat! as it hits the ground. Yahn is overcome with giddy laughter for a few moments as he gesticulates vaguely at the now dead beetle. He looks around sheepishly at his companions as his laughter trails off.
GM.Boldr |
Thorval gets Myani to stitch up his nearly severed leg with magic while Echo puts on her magical shielding.
After a minute of mild ranting Deris seems to have calmed down, but now he's giving Idris a very wide berth. The look on his face betrays how much he dislikes him. You catch a smile here and there though as he looks at the rest of you.
As you all stand on shore, Thorval wades into the middle of the pool and looks down at the skeletal arm. It's very clear that the arm was severed at the shoulder from the body it came from. It is reaching into the water, where it has clearly grasped the metal ring of a large plug.
Thorval Thorvalson |
Seeing the plug, Thorval looks back and says, "Hey, there's some big plug here. Ima gonna pull it!"
He reaches down, ducking his head somewhat, and grabs the metal ring. He gets his feet squared on the ground, and starts pulling.
STR check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
GM.Boldr |
Thorval reaches down and pulls the plug out with both hands. A loud, "SCHLUUUUURRRRP!" can be heard as he yanks on it. Thorval holds it up in victory. Suddenly, a large whirlpool appears underneath the newly opened hole.

Thorval strains and struggles against the water, but maintains his balance and doesn't get swept away by the torrent. In the flury of bubbling blackness you watch the beetle body go flying by Thorval as it's sucked into the hole. With equal suddenness, you see Deris lose his footing by the wet mud of the watering hole's shore and also go flying past Thorval down into the whirlpool, disappearing into the darkness below while yelling, "CASTIEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLL!"
Thorval Thorvalson |
"Look at that!!" Thorval proclaims, holding aloft the stopper. He braces himself against the deluge, and then watches Deris apparently purposely slip and fall into the hole.
"Hey, he did that on purpose! Maybe we should hurry to see where he wanted to go?"
Myani |
"On purpose?" Myani questions. She thinks it unlikely... except for this man's strange behavior earlier.
"No matter. Let's head down." Myani gives a sharp whistle, a command for Ti-Ti to follow her into the hole.
Echo Miyamoto |
Echo moves to climb/walk/jump down the hole.
GM.Boldr |
Ti-Ti does a Winnie-the-Poo down the hole, getting stuck for a moment before popping down the water slide. As the bulk of the water has mostly drained, climbing down is not difficult, as you quickly discover a set of handholds only five feet down. Echo chooses not to use the handholds and quickly shoots down the water slide where she lands on her feet below.
Everybody takes 10 and succeeds.
It is pitch black in the hole, light sources are needed, please indicate what you are using.
After those climbing the steep passage make it a good forty feet, the tunnel levels out at a small landing. To your south you see a long tunnel that leads to a single door. To your east lies a flowing river of water continuing to descend the staircase into standing water. You can tell the pool, unlike that at the surface is brackish, clearly originating from the sea.
Trying to keep things moving a little - if you want more time, or want me to slow down, please say so.
Deris is already standing near the door down the hall, looking excited.
Idris Mael |
Idris climbs down, scanning about with his darkvision. When he is somewhat confident of the lack of danger, he approaches Deris without another word or concern for light.
"Explain.." he starts in a bold voice, before changing his tone slightly. "Please."
GM.Boldr |
Deris immediately sees the hulking man approaching him, hears him bark and order, and stops listening as he runs and hides behind Myani and Ti-Ti, cowering uncontrollably.
Echo Miyamoto |
Echo casts Light on herself.
Thorval Thorvalson |
Thorval triggers his wayfinder to give himself light.
"Idris, quit trying to scare the man!"
He turns to Deris and says, "He does ask a good question. I saw you intentionally fall on that stone, so you would make it down here. While that might be something I would do, that's not always normal behavior.
"Now, you are waiting at the door. What were you trying to do?"
Myani |
Myani casts Light on Ti-Ti.
She raises an eyebrow at Idris, before addressing Deris. "Yes, what is this place? This door?" Myani looks at Idris and then jerks her head toward the door. Either he or one of the others could check the door for anything suspicious.
Thorval Thorvalson |
"Yahn, not sure we'll be going into the light. Aren't necropolises usually in the dark? Or is that just a fancy word for graveyard? I am confused again."
GM.Boldr |
Deris is clearly 'unfriendly' with Idris, and his original 'helpful' demeanor with the rest of you has shifted not to 'unfriendly' but perhaps what you would describe as 'indifferent'. You are all sure this has something to do with the attempt to intimidate him into providing information.
Deris frowns, "Mrs Haracks says this is some kind of necropolis, but I don't know anything about that. You said there may be more children down here, so I wanted to come with and see. Maybe I could find Cassiel. I haven't seen her in awhile, she just...just...hasn't come out yet." He pauses after mentioning the name. "I don't know what's behind the door, but if you came here, it must be important."
GM.Boldr |
General location map has been added to the handouts so you can see better where you may be.
Idris Mael |
Idris gives a non-committal grunt and starts down the passage to the door, looking it over and checking for the way to open it.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
GM.Boldr |
Idris looks over the door while the rest wait by the landing.
The door is not trapped
Echo Miyamoto |
Echo will open the door.
GM.Boldr |
Echo walks up through the 6-foot-wide, arched tunnel. Water seeps through the walls and collects in floor cracks and ankle-deep puddles. Within is a double-vaulted ossuary chamber. The heavy stone door slides aside with little effort. Beyond the door, the once ornate chamber is now a patchwork of brown stone walls, faded paint, and crumbling plaster. Carved pillars in the corners of this chamber hold aloft a double-vaulted ceiling of cracked frescos. On either side of the chamber, a single step leads up to a deeply recessed area that forms an arched room of its own.
On the floor in the east recess, the perfectly preserved body of a young boy lies in a puddle and stares slightly upward. Another body lies in the middle of the room, this one wearing workman's clothing and missing his right arm.

There is a single magical aura under the body of the child. You cannot discern the school.
Thorval Thorvalson |
Thorval moves up, sees the man. "Hey, I'll bet I know where his arm is." he says, as he looks back.
"Been quite a while, shouldn't these bodies all be skeletons or something by now?"
He takes a look around, especially at the two bodies.
Echo Miyamoto |
"I would think so, Thorvalson, but this place radiates magic everywhere. There could be preservation magic keeping everything intact. There is another magic aura under the child, though. I do not know what it is."
Echo draws her Katana.
Myani |
Myani walks over to the body of the guard, first, trying to determine the cause of death. Besides the missing arm. She mentally agrees with Thorval's assessment.
"We'll be cautious, then," she says in reply to Echo. There would be little good of setting off whatever magic she saw. She'll approach carefully when examining the body of the boy.
GM.Boldr |
Myani walks up next to the body of the workman with the missing arm in an attempt to examine it. Mere moments before she reaches out to touch it, he sits upwards. Within moments he is on his feet, his empty eyes looking at Myani as he groans, "Mrrrrrr."
