"We should get that in writing... IF we are going to make such a deal... I am loathe to let this man's father's legacy go so easily though but will acquiesce to the will of the majority."
Iron Man |
Yeah I'm really not liking the situation either but look at it this way, "What would have happened if we weren't here?" This guy is in no state to fight so those guys would have burst in here, roughed him up and taken the deeds anyway.
This way nobody else gets hurt and we can complete our mission. Plus we can try and get this guy cured, maybe he won't be so upset about loosing the land once he realized how much worse it could have been. Iron Man says, just as much trying to convince himself that this is the best situation, as he is the others.
Castiel Graveclaw |
"They have left us with little wiggle room. It seems to be the best of both worlds. They could have come back and forced their way like tin man said."
Durothil Moonstep |
"As long as we complete our mission, report, um...explore. Well, we get this fine establishment as a headquarters. So that is nice." he says while wincing from the cloying smell of raw spirits.
I pray I never come back here again.
GM Bold Strider |
The soldiers fall into a formation behind their leader once he raises his hand. He marches up to the doorway and enters, leaving his men behind.
"You have my word on behalf of the Emperor than you can use this distillery as a Lodge." states the officer. He pulls out a parchment and quill and drafts a quick contract binding the government and the Society to this agreement and allows everyone present to sign the document.
Upon completion of the contract, the lieutenant takes the deed with the lockbox and has his men search the distillery for the key, after learning that it is in the building. A few minutes later, a soldier finds it and the men open the lockbox, disarming two traps in the locking mechanism and recovering the deed. He rolls it up and stores it in a steel scroll tube before bowing to you.
"Thank you for your service. Taldor shall not forget this." the solder states.
---
After about half an hour, as you rest and recover, darkness sets over the land. Durothil notices loud noises in the distance and sees a group of people carrying torches and wielding pitchforks coming their way. You probably have only a few minutes before they reach your location.
Durothil Moonstep |
"More angry humans. Superb. Shall we flee so as not to harm the villagers, or try and explain the deal we had made? They were so agreeable last time."
Galandaro Tinalmathian |
"If we leave now without letting the locals know about the Distillery, when the Pathfinder organization does come back to use the Distillery, will there not be more local angst?"
Durothil Moonstep |
This MOD is like the Triathlon of running away
"Good idea, Galandaro. Can someone please lend me some ink, quill, and parchment?"
Sharpening the quill, Durothil sits downs to compose.
'Dear People of Railford,
Thank you for your hospitality, and please do not throw bricks at us in the future.
We have conquered many difficult obstacles, weird mushrooms, leeches where there should never be leeches, and biting fish.
We found Becher, and have done our best to revive him.
The evil Taladan forces were too much for us and we were forced to parlay.
We had to cede the deed to your town to them, but they will allow a Pathfinder Lodge here. We realizes that this is sub-optimal, we have dealt harshly with our negotiator.
We wish you all the best in the future,
Love the Aspis Consortium
ps all repair bills can be sent to 'IRON MAN' Grand Lodge, Absalom
Durothil looks over it, and reads it to his companions to make sure it is acceptable before heading out.
Iron Man |
Tony glares at the elf as he reads the last part, but then shakes his head. Yeah Alright. Are we really just going to run? I'd like to try and smooth things over, though the torches and pitchforks kind of make me think that will be kind of hard. I just hope Happy made it out of town with my ride before things got too ugly.
GM Bold Strider |
1-Leave / 2-Stay: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Durothil and the rest determine that leaving the town for now is likely for the best. As the group vacates the area and escapes back towards the barrel-aging caverns, the mob finds the distillery empty.
Three days venture towards the nearest Lodge leaves the group relatively grumpy as the rain has not abated. A hawk flies down into their mist and transforms into a familiar face: Osprey. "I'm glad you escaped the fracas at the distillery unscathed. When I failed to find your corpses amongst the carnage, I was worried, but I see that my worry was unnecessary."
The man brushes some water off his shoulders. "Have we secured free access to what is left of Railford?"
Iron Man |
Um... shouldn't we have fought an army of ghouls back at the distillery? I hate to second guess you but I'm using a GM star to replay this and that battle was one of the reasons. If I remember correctly the ghouls were supposed to attack as soon as the soldiers broke in or we agreed to turn over the deeds.
Durothil Moonstep |
"Well met Osprey. Yes, we did secure the rights to use the distillery; yet we did cede the deed to the town to the Taldan Soldiers."
GM Bold Strider |
"Fair enough. I need you to go remove the townsfolk from the distillery where they are holed up and ensure that the area is secure." Osprey commands. He waits for someone to affirm receipt of the mission before flying away.
---
You travel a bit farther to meet up with Happy and his carriage before using it to get back to the town. A day's ride out means that you are there before nightfall, but just barely. As you proceed through Raiford, you see townsfolk ravaged and kills. Blood and bodies litter the street. A putrid stench wafts through the air of death and decay.
Approaching Becher's ex-property, you see flames flicker inside and a yell echoes out across the land. "Those traitors have returned! It's the damn Society again and it looks like the same ones!" The townsfolk can be heard yelling for pitchforks and sickles as the doors are slammed shut.
Galandaro Tinalmathian |
"Seems we have more angry townsfolk to deal with. This area needs a nice temple where they can vent their frustrations in lieu of attacking the Society who is trying to assist them. Who is going to go talk to them."
Durothil Moonstep |
"Last time they threw bricks at me. Usually that happens after people meet me. I know not if I can restrain my hand should these peasants decide to conduct themselves in a violent means. Who among us has honeyed words for these inbreeds?"
Durothil does not yet draw any weapons, but he is preparing if negotiations with the townspeople break down.
Iron Man |
Thanks! The first time I played this the GM misread/ran the trap at the cave entrance and TPKed us, so we never got to even get to the distillery. I sat in at the other table that was playing Decline that night and I remember they had a blast with the battle since it very different that most "kick in the door kill the monster" encounters.
Nodding his head Tony shrugs as he speaks to Osprey. Sure thing, Cap. We'll do our best to either calm them down or, failing that, send them running.
This area needs a nice temple where they can vent their frustrations.
I find church just causes more frustration. A cheap brothel would be better I think.
Who among us has honeyed words for these inbreeds?
Really? Iron Man asks Durothil feigning insult. I'm hurt you would ask such a thing! Laughing at this own joke Tony turns back to closed door. Tapping a few buttons on his armor again he activates his shields and empowers his gauntlet before knocking.
Good evening ladies and Gentlemen! As you all know the king or emperor or who ever now has the deeds to your lands. I get the feeling that some of you are blaming us for this unfortunate turn of events. My friends and I would like to talk to you, give our side of the story. I think you'll see that we are just humble Explorers who were caught in a very tough situation and did what we thought was best. If you think about it this hole situation is rather quite humorous. I bet in a few days we'll all be able to sit down for a drink together, think back on this day and laugh.

Before Tony advances towards the villagers he casts a spell upon himself that toughens his skins with more scales then it already has.

"Just in case our lovely mate here isn't as good with words as he thinks." He says with a shrug.
GM Bold Strider |
The front door opens and two men flank the entrance with glints of hate in their eyes. Dalard sits at a table, polishing his bastard sword. Two men stand at his side. "Come back to kill us all? Don't think you need to. The ghouls will do that for you." the man states plainly without looking at them.
Durothil Moonstep |
"Ghouls? What ghouls? We are not here to kill you man. If there are ghouls here, why do you not fight, but rather sit polishing a sword. You should stick it in the nearest undead you see. Where are they? We shall take care of them. Feel free to tidy up while we are away, unless you are the man we think you to be. Then you can join us returning the nonliving to death"
Losing patience with the townspeople, and endless negotiations, Durothil is looking forward to some honest killing.
GM Bold Strider |
Dalard sighs before raising his hand and waving. The four men leap at the party of Pathfinders. "THIS IS FOR RAILFORD!"

Tony takes a clumbsy swing at the man that attacked him before extending his arm as small cartridge clicks into place on his forearm. The cartridge starts to hiss as gas escapes a small nozzle next to a tiny wheel which begins to spin shooting sparks into air. The Sparks ignite the gas which washes over the three men in front of him.
