Each round, you can turn to detect undead in a new area. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.

So, yes, will penetrate, with above restrictions!

With shaky knees the man steps beside Mavaro, Erasmus takes hold of his exquisitely crafted starknife and looks toward the door on the left. "Aye, let's try this door and see what horrors are to be found," he says with effort, clearly still struggling against the phantom grip of the haunt. "I'll hold off on a stunt like last time, you all seem to be capable as it is." he laughs under his breath then finishes with a cough.

Again he turns to looks at an empty space on the floor nearby, seems to concentrate as if listening to something unheard by the others, then laughs once more under his breath.

The Pathfinder exit the bathroom, and then head back east. This time they stumble upon the kitchen.

Two stoves sit in the southwestern corner of this large kitchen
area. Multiple worktables and butcher’s blocks occupy the
center, while the other walls are covered with cabinets and other
storage areas. A large wooden barrel sits, almost out of place,
to the west. The scent of death that is so prevalent elsewhere is
weaker here, replaced by the smell of overripe fruit.

The room has seen recent use. Upon one table, large eartherware jar sit open. A few sniffs and the Pathfinders can tell that the wine in these jars is not fit for table consumption, at least not one a particular elf would imbibe. It seems to be oxidizing.

Chemistry:
To peel back the curtain a bit more, once, a lifetime ago I was a Chemistry major, even won a scholarship. Did lots of lab work my first year on the wine making process.

When wine Oxidizes

There is a clue in there.

Grand Lodge

Yoon, Female CG Human Pyrokineticist 7 | HP: 81/87 Burn/NL: 4/28 | AC: 21 (16 Tch, 17 Fl) | CMB: 3, CMD: 17 | F: +11, R: +10, W: +5 | Init: +4 | Perc: +11, SM: +1 | Speed 20ft | Active conditions: Elemental Overflow (4)

Yoon scrunches her eyes at the change of smells. She wanders over to the large barrel and gets up on her tip toes to look inside. The sickly smell of over-ripe fruit, while preferable to the stench of death and decay, isn't really that far off.

Chemistry Follow Up:
So I've fallen (into a click hole) and I can't get up. Read through all of that trying to find the clue - and I'm probably still missing something. What I did find is that overripe fruit is suspected as a cause for premature oxidization of wine, among other factors. According to that page, I would expect the wine in the story here to be a brownish or yellowish color. I went back to the beginning of the thread to see if there was a tie in to our mysterious waitress as well. I remembered reading something about Mavaro complaining about the wine, but from what I can tell it was unprompted by the GM, and most likely Damien RPing his abrasive character. Possibly also related, we have had several clues that someone has been here recently. Why would they be trying to make wine though?

I also now know why Finarin is a wine afficianado. I mentioned this a few times at Gen Con, and several times to Lockwood in other conversations - an uncomfortable amount of our own personalities have a tendancy to find their way into our characters - and I love it.

Mavaro walks over to the wine and, like an expert, gives it an experimental sip. Also like an expert, he spits it out. "This foul tipeu du vin is in the process of turning, meaning it has not yet turned and was left open relatively recently... in the last day or so, I would guess."

While grasping the jar, Mavaro once again tries to get an impression of what the jar was being used for. I hope I do not come to regret doing this in the wrong order...

When he is done with the jar, Mavaro moves over to the barrel.

Takes 2 minutes total.

Object Reading:
Mavaro can learn about items by spending 1 minute handling them. If it’s a magic item, he learns its properties and command word as if he had used detect magic and made a successful Spellcraft check. If the item has historical significance, Mavaro learns one piece of information about its past. If the item was last used no longer than 4 days ago, Mavaro learns one piece of information about its previous user. Mavaro does not learn if an item is cursed unless its caster level is 3rd or lower.

Neither Mavaro nor Rivani find anything of significance by studying the objects in this room.

Can I tell you all how much I love these two using these abilities? If this was a homegame, and we were not pressed for time, I would be having a field day with this. Sadly, I am trying to make it interesting but keep our 'eye on the prize'.

"Alors, looks like all the action is upstairs. Still, best to clear things down her, non?" asks Mavaro, growing slightly agitated. All this tension was getting to him. Investigation was all well and good, but a man could be ready for a fight only so long before he started spoiling for a fight.

"Honaire, if you would be so good as to lead us back to the other room so we can try the door on the right?" Mavaro gestures to show where he means (Door #2), "Merci beaucoup."

Estra smirks as she spies the inadequately hidden door in the floor. Perhaps, when the house had been busier, with more activity, such a thing would have gone unnoticed. But this group was used to walking into areas with eyes wide open.

She holds up her hand to stop Honaire from following through on Mavaro's request. It wasn't needed, really...her spiritual partner responded to mental commands, but it was a remnant of his time on Golarion.

"Friends...should we put something heavy on top of the door until we've explored the first floor, then come back to investigate? Or go down now?"

Whenever there seems to be a consensus, Honaire will dutifully move wherever the party agrees.

"Yes, yes, the secret door first," agrees Methodios, "I am still looking after things upstairs. Oh, speaking of, that eye won't last much longer..."

Methodios winks with his left eye, and maintains the wink, keeping his eyelid firmly shut. He then holds his hand in front of his face and smacks himself on the back of the head hard. His right eye rockets out from its socket and plops into his upheld palm. As the other eye did, this one zips off upstairs to watch the door.

"Va bien. Alons-y!"

Mind Eye:

If Mavaro expends 1 point of mental focus from his headband, as a standard action he can create a magical sensor through which he can see and hear. The mind eye is invisible and Fine in size, with AC 18, and any amount of damage destroys it. Only magic weapons or spells can harm it. It has a fly speed of 60 feet with perfect maneuverability and can travel up to 1 mile away from Mavaro. Mavaro must concentrate as a standard action to direct the eye and see sensory images through it, but it sees as his eye sees, including any additional senses he has. The mind eye lasts for 7 minutes.

Mavaro:
I am going to rule that you have 1 minute left on your Detect Undead Spell, with all the searching, this will be the last room it 'works' on.

As the Pathfinder open the secret door, the find a simple passage with rough earthen walls and wooden supports that descends. At the end of the passage is a heavy wooden door. It is the only hinged door in Hinojai, and is locked.

Past the door, Mavaro can feel the presence of a [i]Strong undead presence. Only one, and it is STRONG.

"Caution, mes amis," says Mavaro, holding out a hand, "There is a very powerful undead creature just beyond this door. If you have the means, enhance yourselves before we enter. Honaire, you should be ready for something severe when you enter the room. Mes dieux, protect us."

Mavaro spends 2 points of mental focus from his headband (divination) to fire up some more temporary hit points: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13.

Spirit Shroud:
If Mavaro expends 1 point of mental focus from Mother Wren’s skull, as a standard action he can gain 1d6+7 temporary hit points. This stacks with other temporary hit points, but not from multiple uses of this ability. He also gains a +2 resistance bonus against death effects, fear effects, and any effects that bestow negative levels or deal negative energy damage (as long as the spells or effects allow a save). These effects last for 7 minutes.

The door open, the Pathfinders emerge into a room.

The manacles and fetters set in the western wall leave little doubt as to the room’s purpose. Ancient rusty-brown stains coat the walls and floor where prisoners once hung in chains. In the northeast corner, a small table is covered with torture instruments and a small stack of books. Mavaro, Meligaster, and Yoon all notice that the barrel in the corner of the room is filling with liquid, and can feel a haunt manifesting.

Surprise Round! Up next: Erasmus 24, Meligaster 11, Yoon 14

After consideration some time later, Yoon can understand why such a horrific place would have souls unable to rest here. But in the moment there is just panic.

"use the cage! Use the cage! "

No-one posted that they were picking up the haunt siphon after this post, I think the game got moved along and my little throw-away remark probably got lost. Erasmus clearly doesn't need it, Estra has cure spells (so doesn't need it), but Meligaster, Yoon and Rivani could all benefit from it. Of those, Yoon posted first following Mavaro's post, so by Mavaro's rules, Yoon got it!

Yoon screams out to use the haunt siphon before realizing that she had it all along. She quickly unscrews the cork on the cold iron flask and holds it out, closing her eyes.

Haunt Siphon Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2) = 6

Oof - thats not going to be good enough...

"Gah, one of these things again! Erasmus, this is your expertise... " Meligaster stutters, keeping his distance to the haunt. He fixes his gaze to the creature, and tries one of his spells against it - whatever good it'll do.

Swift: Hypnotic stare. -2 to will saves and and attack rolls. Standard: Cast Mental block (Will save DC 17). Should work even if it's mind-affecting due to bold stare, but it'll get +2 to will saves and 50% chance to ignore.

Erasmus pulls one sleeve up as he notices the others reacting to some unfelt presence in the room. His eyes are tired, each with lines of fatigue and pain etched beneath, but his mind remains sharp to a growing sensation of something unknown approaching. "Once more, as always," he says under his breath with a heavy sigh, taking a few steps toward the barrel. As he nears, he can see it filling with liquid and reaches down to place his hand on the outer radius of the barrel.

Erasmus and haunts:
Erasmus' touch deals 3d6 points of damage to the haunt and he can ask it a single question (the haunt can answer as it chooses).
If a touch attack is needed touch attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18

damage, Erasmus' touch vs. haunt: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2) = 5

"Why do you choose to stay in this place?"

Meligaster, all of those stares and mental block target one creature. A haunt is

a haunt—a hazardous region created by unquiet spirits that react violently to the presence of the living.

so as it is not a creature, those do not affect it. Keep all charged and spells expended, and feel free to retcon your turn.

From beyond, the haunt communicates with Erasmus.

Erasmus:
"I was created by a source of terrific mental and physical anguish endured by living, tormented creatures. I have not been neutralized so here I must stay."

Though Erasmus damages the haunt, the Pathfinders eyes widen as it manifests. Two large men approach Honaire. The grip him by either shoulder and drag him towards the barrel that is now filled with wine. Pushing down hard, they shove him face first into the barrel.

He is the subject of the Suffocation Spell

Fighting in the ectoplasmatic universe, Honarie resists as best he can.

Honarie Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

He places one hand on either side of the barrel and pushes up with all he has. His strength is too much, and he breaks the men's grip.

Honarie is now merely staggered for 1 round as he gasps for breath

Up Next Surprise Round -Meligaster (retcon) & Mavaro; Round 1 - Erasmus, Estra, Yoon, Meligaster.

"You pulled out the syphon too soon, ma petite," Mavaro scolds Yoon half-heartedly, "Weaken it first, and then use the syphon to store its energy to use against your enemies later. Alors, time to put my magic where my mouth is."

ok, a place, not a creature, got it... I'll not use the spell, but otherwise no retcon needed, there's not much Meligaster can do here

Meligaster stares in horror as the ghostly men drag Estra's companion to the barrel, trying to drown him.
"Uh, you seem to be doing just fine here" the halfling's voice is shaky as he takes a silent step backwards. "I... I will be guarding the rear, so no one can sneak up on us"

Any ideas how to get rid of the haunt? Besides positive energy and Erasmus' ability.. Oh, could this be the source of the wine oxidizing? Not sure if it gives any clue for the haunt...

Yoon looks crestfallen at the failure of the item that she used incorrectly in her haste and fear. Unsure what to do, she watches Mavaro use a healing wand on the haunted area.

She is right, if there is no wine barrel, then no one can be made to drown in it!

Yoon begins to wave her arms around her, and suddenly the entire room fills with a dark mist, crackling and humming with the sound of a roaring fire. The swirl is centered on the little girl as she gathers energy from the very room around her.

It is clear he has sorrow for the thing haunting this place, as if it were a victim too, in addition to the endangered Honarie. Gathering his composure, and listening to his companions call, Erasmus prepares his next question.

"What binds you to this place, spirit?" he questions to the ether, reaching out his hand and punching the barrel with great strength. He knows it is not the force of the strike that will damage the spirit haunting this place, it is merely his touch, but that does not prevent the anger from brewing into a strike for fear of his friend.

Tell what to destroy so I can release you, the thought races in his mind, hoping for a clear answer from an unknown entity.
