Jacen walks over and calls forth slippery grease on the trapdoor and behind the man.
reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
"Oooooofff!
The man plops down onto the slippery trapdoor.

GM Aarvid |

The man stands back up and readies with his quarter staff.
"Very tricky, mates. But you ain't gettin' past me that easy!"

Holman leaps down from the ledge and rushes toward the man.
Full-round action: Double move, as indicated on map
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
I'm assuming Holman can't leap off the ledge as part of a charge - if that's incorrect, let me know and I can roll to attack.

GM Aarvid |

I would assume the same...no charge while jumping down from cliff..
You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). You must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can't charge. If any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can't charge. Helpless creatures don't stop a charge. .

August also moves up to the man and attempts to strike him down!
Flail: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 for Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

GM Aarvid |

As soon as Holman and Nguyen An move within 5' of the man, a gout of flame shoots from the grate he is standing upon. Both are hit by the sheet of flames out to 15' (before August moves up).
2d4 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 DC11 Reflex for half
The man swings his readied staff at Nguyen An.
"Ahah!"
staff: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
The man misses the warrior.
Nguyen An cuts deeply into the man's exposed side, and a large amount of blood rushes out, draining the color from his face.
"Wow, ouch...oh boy that smarts."
He remains standing, but does not look good.
August moves up and swings with his flail but does not connect.
12-Morvius
9+Kath
9-Jacen

GM Aarvid |

Morvius calls out for the man to surrender. He looks visibly worried, but does not drop his quarterstaff.
Jacen drops from the ledge and moves into a flanking position from Holman. The Halfling appears to have dodged the brunt of the flames.
Kath?

GM Aarvid |

Kath moves up and readies to strike. The man feebly swings at Kath with his staff but Kath is quicker, and slashes the man, dropping him to the greasy grate on the floor.
* end combat *

![]() |

Nice one, Kath! August exclaims as the battle ends quickly. What's he guarding under the grate?

GM Aarvid |

1d20 ⇒ 6
The man appears to have studded leather armor and a plain quarterstaff. He also has a strange token on a chain around his neck.

![]() |

Just a necklace I think. You wanna go see what's under the grate? Me and An can move it for ya.

GM Aarvid |

August and Nguyen An (still needing a save vs fire) are, with some difficulty, able to pry open
the greasy sewer grate. The shaft below has a ladder leading down to a dark, lower level.
Map updated

GM Aarvid |

As you climb down the ladder, you enter the lost lower levels of Cassomir.
Cassomir Below is an abandoned neighborhood
that looks more like a cavern than a city block. Buildings
here are separated by high tunnels, 20 to 30 feet tall in
places, whose roofs are the foundations of the sewers and
buildings above. Each building here was once
the ground floor of the buildings above, but today they’re
totally cut off from the upper floors on the surface. The
streets are dirty and dusty.
All of the buildings here extend right up to
the top of the cavern. Cassomir Below is completely unlit.
So need light source(s) and order if you climb down the ladder.

![]() |

Hrmm, maybe if there is time later I can expirament with this neckless further. Currently I have a job to do and I'd rather not fry my companions with more fire
Kath will follow Morvius with light on his scimitar - practical and convienient.
August and An in front with Holman and Jaycen brining up the rear?

As you each make it down the 20' ladder into the darkness, the silence is almost eerie.
Once Jacen steps off the ladder, two pair of beady eyes turn into large black rats that (partial) charge from a pile of crates and from the alley.
"Squueeeeeeeek!"

The second bounces of Nguyen An's armor, gnashing as it was denied the taste of blood.

Kath delays, waiting an opening.
August steps into flank and smashes down on the black rat, crushing its legs. The creature flops over and twitches.
Morvius cures the bite wound on his leg.
* End Combat *
These rats were especially large, violent and black. You do not see any more...or they have scampered away into the darkness.

![]() |

Hmm, weren't we warned about such rats? Think these are them? August asks as he kicks at the dead rodent. That's a big rat, huh An?

GM Aarvid |

Looking down the dark streets, you make out several buildings to the east. You see no sign of lights in this forsaken place beyond what you carry. Only the sounds of scurrying creatures and dripping water echoing off the walls and high ceiling of the sewers and city above.

![]() |

Umm, what way guys? I don't know where we should be goin'. An? Which way? August will try to notice anything with his darkvision, if it helps.

GM Aarvid |

August can see further than the others without darkvision. He makes out rows of old buildings to the east as far as his vision extends.
He cannot make out colors, but notices a pattern in the floor to the east that looks familiar

![]() |

Buildings mostly, but I think I see somethin' on the ground. August will move to the pattern that he sees and will urge the party to go with him. Look! See it? A rat!

GM Aarvid |

As you move east, your light shines on another of the strange pouncing rat carved into the street between the buildings.

![]() |

Rats, rats and more rats. Kath mutters You'd think they'd find a cleaner symbol to worship
Kath doesn't like leaving these rooms unexplored but from the symbol on the floor it seems like they are at least headed in the right direction.

The party continues eastward behind the stalwart dwarf.
