A few words about two pivotal NPCs.
Amanda Wolfheart is largely unknown outside the shifter community and the Junior Reserve where she is counted among Pensive Starfinder's 'lesser victims', favorites being too strong and positive a word for the sergeant.
Everyone knows Peter Roujon. As part of a large very successful farming, winemaking, and merchant family, he would be notable in any event. But this sixteenish year old gets around. Handsome and a good singer, he is very popular with girls in Haltwhistle and a number of surrounding towns and with some of their parents. He is not popular at all with many of the other girls' parents. The boy is a prankster. It is unproven but common local knowledge that he was behind the cow-switching incidents of last summer in which cows belonging to many different farmers ended up in other farmer's barns. (Sally Turner's cows were not displaced.) He is also one of Pensive Starfinder's 'lesser victims'.

Last night I was working on the combat map and realized that it was too big to fit legibly on a computer screen. But I have a fix.
Crushed by work today, and tomorrow. My last unmarried cousin gets married this weekend so I probably won't post again til Monday.

Lydia Wolfheart |

Would I be correct in assuming that once on the rooftops they are considered difficult terrain?
Edit: Oh sod. I have just realised I miscalculated my movement, I was working four times double move when I should have been working on four times standard move....it will take Lydia another two rounds before she is fifty feet from the access to the rooftops...
My bad, Thom!

Thenji Cross |

It is definitely going to be a lot of rounds before we're even close. And the enemy is gearing up to get their own wagon up and running. Poor arcane/divine/psionic users, activating their armor powers so soon when action is like five rounds away.

Thenji Cross |

If it is the point, we'll have to come up with something else. I literally RP'd a donkey and cart into existence that Thenji doesn't technically own. That means we're all on foot canonically. So that means we're not catching them. Well, maybe Lydia. Not sure if Shifting gives her any bonus to movement. Otherwise, we need to focus on something else like the wounded.

therealthom |

Dabbler, no worries on the movement mistake. The 'route to the roof' roll applies wherever you are. You can just keep that roll for your current location. The difficulty of roof terrain will vary by building. For each building roll d8. 1-4 = normal. 5-6 = difficult 7-8 = difficult but ameliorable to normal terrain by a DC 12 acrobatics check.

Lydia Wolfheart |

I'd rather keep it ahead of Lydia, actually, as it gives her an access route up there close enough to the action for her to have an effect - I'll just have to keep running for two more rounds!
So currently, Lydia is at 540' and in two rounds she'll be at 780'...

Lydia Wolfheart |

NP Thom!
By the way, as a possibility I was considering taking the feat Gatekeeper Initiate for Lydia. Technically she qualifies as she can spontaneously cast Summon Nature's Ally spells (although HeroLab doesn't seem to get that). I wanted to ensure that you were OK with it, though.
In another Eberron game I played a spirit shaman (a kind of spontaneous caster), and the spells were added to those available at all times not to spells possible to learn. Would you rule that this is how it would work for a spontaneous caster?

therealthom |

Pinvendor, thanks for the rules reference on armor donning. I think we'll house-rule that Aljohar can help and thereby halve the time to don your armor.
Guys, I wanted this first fight to be something different, and I got that, but different isn't always good. I should have done double rounds until someone got into melee range with the bandits, just to move things faster. Or maybe abandoned rounds altogether until we reached melee. I don't know.
Anyway, apologies that it isn't a slick setup or procedure. With your indulgence we'll muddle through it.

Thenji Cross |

It has been brought to my attention that you had, in fact, provided us with free riding mounts and all the trappings to use such fine animals. I have a sneaking suspicion these free horses were a part of your initial planning for this encounter scene which could explain the long distances involved.
As I myself completely forgot about the free horse, I rather colorfully created my own locomotion for the purposes of RP blissfully unaware that I was leading this imaginary creation into a potentially dangerous circumstance when a regular riding mount would have been much more appropriate. I would like to apologize for that oversight, as I can happily assure you that I would have had Thenji on his dapple grey horse Doppel (yeah, that's, uh...that's what I'm calling it. >_>) riding into town.
If this is in fact what you had planned for us, would it be possible to have the stable near by the parallel road? Maybe we can grab our mounts and get ready for the Indiana Jones style chase?

Lydia Wolfheart |

I thought of that, but as Lydia had already tied up her horse at Uther's it was a toss-up as to whether she would retreat and get the horse or not. With limited information she went on foot...guess that's the way the cookie crumbles!

therealthom |

Sorry for the spotty posting.
I had set this up with the idea that archery would be important. And just to see what you all would do without prior coordination.
I like the improv with Brawny. Interesting that Karl chose his feet rather than his horse. I didn't anticipate Lydia going rooftop, but that makes perfect sense.
The horses were intended for the upcoming overland trip.
Game post at lunch today.

Cool, Uthar and the cart people will be in it soon.
Hey I looked at a couple sheets and didn't see action points listed among expendable resources. I have to look up the particulars, but you start with a couple.
The most common uses are :
1. roll a d6 to add to a d20 roll.
2. auto-stabilize if reduced below 0 hp.

therealthom |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |

Hmmm. I thought I'd talked about action points earlier, but a thread search doesn't turn them up.
Acquisition of Action Points:
You gain 5+ 1/2 your level action points, rounding down, each time your character levels up. Left over action points from the previous level are lost.
Uses of Action Points:
1. Add a d6 roll to a d20 attack, skill check, ability check, level check, or saving throw.
2. Stabilize a dying PC. (Yourself, not another PC)
3. Hasten Infusion. (Artificer rule)
4. Activate Class feature. For 2 action points, you can make an additional use of an ability with uses per day, bardic music, rage, smite evil, stunning fist, channel, or wildshape.
Rules paraphrased from Baker, Slavicsek, Wyatt, Eberron Campaign Setting, Wizards of the Coast.

A solid wooden bucket would be worth at least 1d4 in my view. Swung by the handle it's an indirect contact weapon, a bit like a flail. Very nasty.
I feel a bit sorry for the riders at the moment - they are clearly part of the bandit attack, and are currently running into serious difficulties. Their "deadly archer" is coming second in a duel of bows, one of them has been unhorsed and is being beaten down by a man with a bucket, and of the other two one has failed to take out an unarmed man, while the other is challenging a berserker...

therealthom |

Nice quip, DSX. Maybe you you should qualify for the Dashing Swordsman prestige class.

therealthom |

Relaying from Leo/Jam:
"If you do not mind relaying, I'm not intending to do anything crazy. Some more taunts about the archers being sissies, move 30' forward and full defense."Since he cannot access paizo from work.
Relaying is fine.
And the bucket is ok as you wrote it.

Sorry, guys, I kind of ran out of steam last night.
I've been teaching a class and still trying to do some of my other work duties before or after hours. The class ends tomorrow. If we finish early I should get a chance to post in the afternoon. If not it will be Friday.

Thenji Cross |

I apologize for my complete lack of communication. These last few weeks I have been struggling creatively. I haven't been "hearing" my character's voice. I keep thinking "tomorrow" will be different, and so I talk myself out of posting even a comment in discussion.
I intend to get back into the mix and be regular. Sorry for the delay...

Lydia Wolfheart |

I am not so sure; the encounter design was fairly realistic, I think what maybe you lacked was a hook to put all the party in one place close to the action - like all choosing to take a cooling ale in the tavern just down the street or some such - or else rigging a way of getting us there at the same time without running the intervening rounds. But as you say, we are in the action now, so things should get more interesting...
I'm hoping for some support against Mr Archer, he seems to be well beyond Lydia's league although she does have the advantage of cover.

therealthom |

When I posted Saturday, I thought I'd be back to the keyboard shortly, not 2.5 days later.
My wife is down with pneumonia, and I am trying to pick up some slack around the house, and take care of her. Oh and work. Today was splendid. Too splendid for me to describe here with words.

Thenji Cross |

Just to make sure, Thenji has already done his Round 10 action. You're calling for him to go again, but the baddies haven't attacked since Thenji dropped the one. Don't they get another go first? I'll probably regret asking this...
