Brom laughs. Very well friend. Don't be too long though! And Hurry back down lass if you want some of Brom's Blueberry Icecream! bwahaha. you are welcome to join us Davien! he walks back into the kitchen, as he goes through the door, the bard follows slowly, a smile on his face. He gives the group one quick glance before following the innkeeper.

As you all move to the inn, you enter the room Serill is in, only to see him sitting their reading, and a red-headed halfling girl fast asleep on one of the beds.

"Okay, I deserved that," Dalen admits, "but from the looks of things, you were starting to get into a confrontation and..."

Whatever Dalen had been about to say dies on his tongue as he opens the door and sees Serill in the room with a sleeping red-headed halfling on a bed. Silently he herds the others in and closes the door behind him. He also makes sure to stand in the doorway to keep the others from leaving.

"Okay," Dalen says before looking to Serill and gesturing to the halfling girl. "Serill, care to explain what this is?"

Elaina, already suffering from a little shock from her ordeal is overwhelmed by the apparent shenanigans that have occurred since they've arrived.

"Dalen's never going to leave us alone again after this," she mumbles a little louder than she had intended to.

"Yes there is a slight problem." He says, not bothering to explain much of anything or seeing much need to. "She is fast asleep in a drunken stupor and I have no idea where her own room is. Admittedly, I wasn't sure about just asking the owner where her room was and hoped she would wake up before now." Anduriel's quip seemed to pass right over him, he just seems to care about fixing a problem with as little notice by others as possible. He also leaves out mention of her magical belongings. "She could prove to be an ally yet. Perhaps. I'm not sure really..."

Dalen groans as he runs a hand down his face and turns to the three he'd herded up to the room.

"So, Serill's just a victim of circumstance, what about your three," he asks a little gruffly.

Elaina looks as if she's about to answer Andi's question when Dalen turns his attention to her, Lily, and Alistair. The young archer just shakes her head and mouths "later" as Dalen begins asking them about what was going on downstairs.

Andi grins for a moment before responding. "The prettyboy downstairs is a mindbender. He was subtly throwing around magic as he performs, hence the group of enthusiastic followers down there. Lily and I resisted it and tracked the source to him. Enchantment and other effects tied in there, makes people like him and want to tell him things."

She turns to look at Alistair. "Here's how dangerous he really is. Al close your eyes. He asked what brought you to town. Think about what your answer was going to be."

At this Serill's ears perk up. "Enchantment you say. Unfortunately I have absolutely no talent in the field but I would like to have a chat with this fellow I think." Talk of magical attacks from a performer made Serill almost forget their current problem. "Does anyone plan to go back down tonight?" Machinations go through Serill's mind as he concocts a potential plan for combating this perceived threat.

Alistair, I'll just say you can count as passing the save. That compulsion is gone.

As Dalen listens, he grows paler and paler.

"Elaina and I were," he answers Serill, "I had told Brom I'd show him some rye bread recipes and he's promised Elaina some ice cream to make up for something that happened outside the inn. He said that bard is his business partner, and if he is linked with the ones we're looking for, we're in trouble. I talked to Brom and found out that if we're looking for work as mercenaries, we'd have to talk to the Mayor anyway. If we reveal what we are to him, I'd say we have maybe a day to wrap things up before our quarry finds out."

After a moment, he looks up and does a head count.

"Elaina, where's Damari?"

Damari having harrassed the little couple long enough, and loaded with possible leads, races back to the inn. Hoping not be missed to much. While heading back, he also looks around for active animal tracks.

After making notes of whats around the area, leads Grey Hoof back to the stable to rest up. Once that's handled he heads back to the inn, he goes about trying to connect with the crew. After getting hearing from a passerby that they went upstairs, he follows shortly. Hearing Serill's voice coming from the rooms, he proceeds in.

"Greetings, friends. I think I have a lead on our wayward son." Seeing that some of the group are a bit agitated, he asks "Why so gruff brothers and sisters. No one seems to be hurt, what have I missed?"

"He doesn't seem like a bad person though Andi. Maybe a little nosy, but not a bad guy." She thinks for a moment, looking over at the passed out halfling. "Serill did she happen to say her name? While Dalen is with the innkeeper he should be able to tell him what room she belongs to."

As it seems everything was sorted out, she looks over her shoulder as Damari walks in. "You have missed way too much. Elaina was apprently man handled, Alistair was put under an enchantment, and Serill ran into that girl." She points to the halfling on the bed.

Damari listens to the Lily and Andi, and perks up at the mention of the bard. But is immediately is concerned about the mishandling of Elaina by ruffians. He takes a glance to see if she is hurt.

Hearing Dalen's prompt, he says "Well, I believe that the concerns of the Mayor may be intertwined with our wayward Daniel."

Damari having a moment of paranoia, makes a quick scan of his surroundings to see if anyone unintended is listening in. Making doubly sure that the gnome is asleep.

If no one is listening in:

[whisper]"There is a cave system to the north filled with a mysterious cabal that seems to be plotting something on the township. I don't know much, but it seems that they may be accosting people out in the forest. And since you mention the bard; I've been informed that he had a hasty meeting a few days ago. Three travelers met with him quickly before heading off down the road to Umber."[/whisper] He whispers to the group.

Damari looks to the group and tells them, "I believe we should meet with the Mayor soon, to see if what he knows matches up with the what I was told. We should probably keep watch on the Bard and anyone he may be in contact with."

Now how suspicious should we be of the Bard, and the 'sleeping' gnome.

We're adventurers, and town officials aren't going to drop business to meet with a bunch of adventurers unless things are truly dire, so to keep our cover, we'll continue to act like adventurers. We'll need to meet with him first thing in the morning, so if you have to, use the letter, but be sure to let him know the fact we are who we are is a secret, and that he'll have a very cross knight miffed at him if he goes blabbing. Play it up and make me the scariest sounding monster to ever have come from the depths of the abyss. While you do that, Elaina and I are going to fulfill the appointment we have with Brom. We'll rope the bard into joining us since the innkeeper is 'partners' with him. Elaina and I will keep an eye on him and see if we can weasel some information from him. Which means Serill, Andi, and Lily will be up here keeping an eye on sleeping beauty over there."

He jerks a thumb at the halfling girl and lets his words hang for a moment before asking, "anyone have a better plan or concerns they can voice in the next two minutes? I don't want to keep Brom and Davien waiting longer than I have to."

Elaina is fine, if shaken up. She's been awfully quiet and has stayed close to Dalen the entire time though.

I agree with Anduriel, you need to tone it down a lot of notches. You are no commandant. More like a greedy merchant than anything else.

I do not remember anything like being asked to do stuff, more like an urge to spill my guts on why I was here, the bard seemed so friendly.

Let me get this straight....we get to town and the group sets off in several different directions and now you want to do that again. If you were not so busy trying to make a profit, you might have noticed that that did not go so well. The only thing that stop me from being magically forced to talk to that bard was these two.. he motions towards Lilly and Anduriel and the fact that the bard pissed me off with the disrespect directed towards them.

He takes a step towards Dalen
I do not know who the hell you think you are nor do I care, but you are not in command of this group and never should be. I do not know if it is a delicate sense of worth or a lack of attention as a child but you have issues that are in desperate need of fixing. You want us to think you are this misunderstood knight that can not keep his anger under control.....But wait there is more...you leave this group to go and make a FU*#&NG PROFIT!!!
Alistair steps back a bit hands dangling by his weapons. The anger is still there
You have a plan that has some merit but you lack the will to look past your purse strings to see the danger you place the group in. If you want to continue with your baking lesson fine but take the halfling women and turn her over to Brom, he will know what to do with her. There are not many Knights if any that are part of an adventuring group let alone mercenaries! He directs his next words towards the group in a slightly calmer tone In my opinion, a meeting with the mayor is our best course of action. I am willing to go with two others to meet the mayor. I feel someone that has more of a diplomatic touch would be best suited for such task, maybe Damari and or Serill. Lilly and Anduriel can quietly keep an eye on Dalen and Elaina. If one of you sees any of us get snagged by the bards magic, answer the questions for them. I notice that the bard wanted me to tell him all about what I was doing. I think that will not stop me from answering for some one else with a lie. I hope at least. I would rather have the whole group go to the mayor but that might not be the best course.

He calms down to a neutral tone
I am no leader nor do I want to be one. I want what is best for the group and the mission. Dalen your priorities are fu**ed at best, if you are going to be part of this group you need to make a decision as to who you are. You can not be a knight, a monster, a leader and a merchant at the same time. It will not work. Get your demons under control.

He stops for a moment and waits...thinking about what he will say next..
I am sorry for my outburst, the bards magic has me on edge and my words were harsher than I wanted them to be.

"I'm not the only one who has issues with their temper," Dalen says coldly, "nor have I ever tried to make anyone believe that I am misunderstood. Oh yes, I have a temper, and I can be the meanest bastard you ever meet, but I have never made any attempts to deceive you."

The young knight takes in a deep calming breath and closes his eyes. When he opens them, he looks at Alistair without the anger he had been feeling well up inside of him. Green eyes.

"I asked if anyone had a better plan. There was no need for you to spend time we don't have spewing your vitriol at me," he tells Alistair before gently picking up the sleeping halfling girl and carrying to the door.

"Just tell me my part in whatever you decide when I get back."

Without another word, Dalen exits the room and heads downstairs.

Downstairs:

Dalen finds Brom in the common room of the inn and motions him over with a nod of his head.

"I'm afraid I won't be able to continue our trading," he says matter-of-factly, "something has come up and I need to help see to it with the others. Can you make sure she gets to her room? She wandered into one of ours by mistake and passed out. If you have some help, I'll get the casks unloaded and we can settle that transaction."

After Dalen leaves, Elaina levels a glare at Alistair.

"You think just because you say 'Sorry, I didn't mean to be so judgemental,' it makes it all okay," she asks incredulously. Her blue eyes glittering with anger.

"If greed was the only thing that motivated him, he wouldn't even be in the Order. He would have continued right on by and ignored me and the two drunks trying to drag me off. Yes, he's brutal, bossy, and blunt. Yes, he would rather be trading than serving in the Order, but there's not a single knight here that I trust more or feel safer around than him," she snaps at Alistair before falling into a stormy silence.

Damari listens pensively, as the palpable anger comes to a head.

Erastil, please help me bind back together these charged souls. More than our petty wants must be taken care of.

As cooler heads start to prevail, relaxes a bit before stepping back into the conversation. "Brothers and Sister's let me apologize for not being there in your time of need. Especially you Elaina, I left a believer when they need my defending the most. You have my humble apologies."

"But let us remember that we are not only here for each other. Just a few days ago, we watched too many of our own struck down in hate and villainy. By madmen who wished not just harm to us, but what this nation has stood for. What our Order has stood for! And now lost out here to be used as a pawn, is Alaryn's son, our brother of the order", he moves to look everyone in the eye to make sure they are listening.

"We may not know who out there maybe involved in this plot against us. But know that all of us in this room, all of us, will be coming out of this together and alive. We will bring back Daniel. And those that stand against us will know that we will stand ready and united!" Damari finishes looking at Alistair and Elaina. Waiting to see if they choose petty bickering and chaos over, coming back together for their mission.

I never said I was sorry for being judgmental, and yes I judge him on his actions and those actions alone. I am not sorry for saying what needed to be said, he is divided and is a liability.

The only reason he helped you out is because he knew that he fuc*ed up and was only trying to save face. Hell you would not have been in that position if he was doing his damn duties instead of out selling HIS OWN wares! You just keep telling yourself that he is the safest knight...when he is around that is. He has left you alone on more than one occasion and will do so again. You should start to worry about your own training and become who you want to be and not his little pawn. As for greed well that comes in all types. I am counting on Dalen, you and everyone else here to stay alive and finish this mission. When someone is out for their own gain at the expense of this unit, then they need to be reigned in or they need to go. I am hoping that Dalen will think about others from here on in. Yes you can stare at me all you want..I do not care at all little girl. It is time to suck that bottom lip in and grow up!

Our cover is blown and many factors are at fault. We can not claim to be merchants now that Brom thinks we are adventurers looking for mercenary work. Nor are we able to keep a low profile due to my own actions. So lets deal with this as best as we can. What are our options?

just a nitpick, technically you haven't done anything that would have blown your cover as merchants/mercenaries as of yet. The girls never did let you sit and chat with the bard.

Serill, after Alistair speaks, returns to his table and picks up the bag there and stuffs it into his shirt. "I'm going to spy on and investigate this man who has you all in a bother. Perhaps everyone should get some sleep tonight. I'm almost certain we'll be feeling better after some rest from our journey. And then we can see the Mayor directly after breakfast before we decide what to do next." With a flick of his blade and a murmured arcane phrase he shimmers and disappears into thin air...
Spellcraft DC 17: He cast invisibility! *gasp*
You hear some more phrases chanted before the door to the room opens and closes. it's safe to assume Serill has left the room.

Downstairs

I'm invisible you can't see me:

At the top of the stairs Serill took the walls instead so he could observe without the chance of being bumped into. He looks to see if he can see where Anna has been taken to and then gets out the borrowed spectacles of hers that had been left behind. Your spectacles will be safe with me for the time being Anna... He puts them on and from his vantage point scans the room, focusing on the highest intelligences or auras of magic first.

he looks at Anduriel and Lilly
Please wake me when and if I am needed. Good night...
Well this is f**king great. What the hell am I getting myself into. Dalen is a so caught up in his own personal gains that he is of no use. His little tag along is just so naive as to what is going on around her that she would get lost in a circular room looking for a corner to hide in. Serill is all about being alone. Damari is giving sermons to anyone that will listen. Anduriel and Lilly seem to have their s*it together at least. Are we three the only ones that are looking at this mission as a priority. The others seem to feel that their personal business comes first. That is going to get someone killed.

Anduriel smiles as Serill vanishes. Obviously his strengths lay in subterfuge, which they would very much need.

'It'd be interesting to see what he finds out.'

"There's something to be said for each of us using our strengths. We're all pretty frazzled and a good night's rest will do us all some good. Have a good night Alistair."

Lily doesn't speak during everyone else's exchanges. She is clearly frustrated and is trying to calm herself down. As people begin leaving to finish their business, she takes a chair and sits down for a moment taking a deep breath. To no one in particular she speaks. "I'm sorry for losing my temper for a second. Just knowing that I fell to that man's magic is frustrating. Much less that he did it twice, and was clearly successful the second time." She sighs. "Today is was a pretty good day too. Shame."

Yeah, I think Dalen forgot to pick up the girls bag in his angered rush :p

As dalen enters the kitchen Brom turns with a smile, before hearing what Dalen has to say. What? What is Wrong Dalen? I promised your little friend some Ice Cream! And what has come up that is more important than sharing a good evening cooking good food with a friend! He clearly can see you are frustrated, but he attempts to pretend not to notice and act cheerfully.

At this point you notice Davien the bard leaning against one of the walls as he says. Yes, I was looking forward to trying this bread of yours. Ole Brom here seems to have high hopes for it.

At this point Brom will take the girl from Dalens arms, Let me see the little one then. Hmm she did not purchase a room yet tonight. However, I suppose I could let her sleep the drink off for a night. Speaking of little ones, where is your friend? The little lass from before? Your lover perhaps? I noticed you were very angry at her treatment by those two ruffians. Will she be alright?

@Serill, you notice most of the inn goers have around 10-13 intelligence on the average, and most of their minds are easily penetrated by your searching. You get a barrage of thoughts anywhere from wandering how the food and drink is made to thoughts of weariness and yearning to get to their destinations, and even some more... steamy, thoughts. Nothing stands out though. However when you enter the room after Dalen before the door closes you notice Brom and Davien speaking to him. Brom has an intelligence of 11, while Davien has an intelligence of 14. You Instantly focus on Davien, searching his thoughts as he speaks. You get-

Serill's mind raping of Davien:

Who are these guys. What do they want, why are they here? Are they after... them..? I know they caught me but how. My magic's and charm has never failed before. Obviously there were keeping their companion away from me. He is likely the weak link, I need to get some alone time with him. Just need to convince Brom to let me go do my work. I wonder how this man is connected to the other three. Why would a merchant be asking around for mercenary work? Something is defiantly up. ARGH, I was so close. Just gotta keep Brom and the others around here on my good side though and I should be safe, even if they managed to figure me out. All it takes is the right timing, a charming smile, and a proper spell or two. Who the hell is the girl? Whatever, not important right now. If I can slip up later tonight, I might manage to get the drop on one or two of them. I know Brom doesn't usually put more than two to a room. Just gotta make sure I'm with the one I know I can manipulate. Even if the woman lacks subtlety, she is dangerous, even more so now since she is on her guard. Best bet might be to try to get Brom to call the whole group down, maybe with an offer or a rumor about getting some coin for mercenary work. Can't refuse that if they are or aren't just mercenaries. If they are, they'll take the work, if they aren't they'll have to come and listen at the least or risk blowing their cover further. If not, I'll have to take my chances on getting the drop on them at the right time... I can't fail, not with her life at risk. Dammit all. Basically You get this, and other thoughts along that line. He runs several plans through his head, but he keeps coming back to this one and mentioning something about a girl/her/she being in danger if he fails.

However, when you try to penetrate Broms thoughts, your mind hits a barricade of Iron, as if you had slammed your head against a full metal tower shield. You recoil, almost recoiling with your physical body, you loose consciousness for a split second before regaining control, you also find your detect thoughts spell disrupted for a bit. Not long, say, half a minute. The glasses detect several very minor magic items among the patrons, most enchanted to conjure minor cantrips, mostly Light and Mending, Some provide a small glamour, maybe covering some birthmark or scar, and you are positive one was being used to keep its wear smelling like lavender, or something of that nature. Oh and Dalen, make a will saving throw or pour your thoughts out to Serill ;)

While Elaina remains silent, the glare she levels at Alistair is cold and unyielding.

I'll write down the recipes I was going to show you," Dalen says, wanting to be done with this as soon as possible. "As for what's come up, I'm not really sure. I need to talk to the others and that could take all night. If you'll excuse me, I need to unload the casks from my wagon and grab some gear from it so I can make sure it's ready."

With that, he takes his leave and heads outside to where his wagon is parked to unload the casks from his wagon and grab his and Elaina's armor and weapons, bundled in his blanket and bedroll to muffle the noise and disguise what it truly is from a casual glance before heading back up stairs.

Roll me a stealth or sleight of hand for the keeping the weapons and armor disguised/hidden.

Don't worry Dalen. Serill isn't trying to peer into your mind this time.

Rubbing his forehead from the contact with Brom's mind Serill removes himself from his peculiar position near the ceiling and crawls back to the hallway and their room before his spells can wear off completely. Despite the brush with a fall to the floor he feels invigorated. Being surrounded by so much magical energy rubs off onto him and he almost feels invincible right now.

Seeing at least a few of his teammates calm down, Damari settles for what he can get for now.

Seems like Alistair has a chip on his shoulder. Wonder if he needs someone to talk too later.

Seeing the group disperse once more, especially Serill dispersing into the air. Damari calmly walks back downstairs for a bit, mingling with the patrons and locals. He strikes up a few conversation, trying to find out more about people disappearing into the woods. Wondering if those people who are disappearing, are the people in the cave network.

The bard spun a tale about a nearby cave where some lover met there fate. I wonder if these caves are one and the same. connected.

Diplomacy (Gathering Information): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Damari tries to mingle, but just makes a buffoon of himself in the common room. Looking for an escape from it all, he sees Dalen hauling in some gear. He walks over to him.

"Still angry?"

Walking over to Lily. Andi rests a hand on her shoulder. "I'd still count it as a good day for the most part, good drink, food and company, we have an idea of who to watch out for and a few promising leads. As long as we make sure none of us is alone with him, and whenever he's around, if you can, shift your senses to perceive magic so we know when he's casting. Maybe we can even interrupt his magic."

She smiles. "The fact is after one day, we now way more than we did, we still have our cover and we're ready to get to work. Everything else is nothing a good night's sleep won't fix."

Lily gives Andi a nod. "You're right.. We have made pretty good progress today." Lily stands up, and looks at Elaina across the room then back to Andi. She moves in to whisper to her.

Whisper, DC 15:

"I have an idea to lighten the mood a bit. Do you want to help me interrogate Elaina on what the deal is between her and Dalen?"

Lily smiles as she finishes talking.
