Ederin reflects on the last time the entered a secret opening and shakes it off, silently vowing not to let any of his friends fall if he can help it.

Water drips down along the walls of this damp cavern. The cave itself is cluttered with bits of rubble and debris, much of which seems to be from a strange, blackened form of rock quite different in appearance from the rock that makes up the walls of the cavern. The ceiling slopes up to the north, from a height of about ten feet near the southern exit to a height of fifteen feet to the north.

The room is difficult terrain thanks to the debris, though there seems to be a path of sorts leading to the northwest through a small passage. You see another small passage to the northeast. Both lead into darkness.

Garridan is a light source. Anyone else providing light? It’s a smaller map so I’m not too worried about light, just getting an overview in case you split up again. Also, I've loaded a new map so you can see your area.

Ederin wills his Longsword to light up and uses its glow to find the tracks that led them to the cave, hoping to see what direction they move in.

Dimitrio is about to light up the place when all sorts of lights came on.

He draws his rapier and follows Ederin, "Layne, you may want to let some of us better armored to be up front. If there are drow here, their darts were nasty."

Nodding to Garridan, the small man takes point and follows the tracks to the east, keeping his senses sharp, lest he be punctured by spears for a second time in his life.

Lief moves about the room, a little on edge as the secret door clicks into place behind them. As the lights go on, he breathes a little easier, then less so, as the lights mark them for creatures that require it to see in such tunnels/caves as these.

As Ederin moves to the northeast, his light pierces the darkness and reveals a drow! He gestures quickly (surprise round to me) and the room is suddenly dark again, despite all the party light sources. A crossbow bolt rings out in the darkness at Ederin.

Dimitrio started reciting, hoping to bolster his companions resolve. But did they mean to stay and fight in the dark.

"People, unless we can light this place up, I suggest we head back out, and quickly!"

Ederin curses as the bolt passes by him harmlessly. He shakes his head, trying to adjust as the lights flicker off and on again, but when he finally gets used to it he realizes he's closer than he'd like to be to his opponents. As he backs up he draws his bow and fires a single shot at blue.

Garridan hesitates for a moment as darkness engulfs them. Then the room brightens and he rushes toward the drow.

Roll 20 Map

Combat in darkness is tough and hopefully Kaylayne’s spell means you won’t have to deal with it. It’s a perception check (free action) to determine what square they’re in, then you must overcome a 50% miss chance because you cannot see them. They get a +2 to hit you (because they can see) and you lose your dexterity to AC.

Dimitrio begins to inspire his mates even as he backs up toward the door. Kaylayne brings forth a bright light - sufficient to drown the darkness and bring light to the fight. Lief protects himself further with a shield to guard his body.

While I do appreciate your enthusiasm, be careful you don’t go out of turn. The drow go before Garridan and Ederin. Garridan, I moved you back 5’ as one would have stepped up on Ederin (previously standing where you stand now). Of course if Ederin fails his fort save, you're standing over his inert body.

The tunnel narrows considerably there, and so you do have to deal with cover. -6 to your melee attacks (and vice versa). They are wedged in pretty tightly.

The bard moved up next to garridan and tried to strike at the drow wedged in the tunnel. Cursing for the protection it afforded them from his rapier, the bard was glad to be somewhat protected from their crossbow bolts.

Dimitrio rushes back into the fray, but alas he cannot hit his opponent, as protected as he is by the cave structure.

Suddenly the room darkens again, despite Kaylayne’s attempts at brightening it. However, the room is still partially lit from the open secret door. (Treat the door like a weakened torch, so 15’ from the door it’s ‘normal’ and 15’ from that it’s ‘dim’. Kaylayne, Garridan, Dimitrio, and the drow are in total darkness at this time.) The more perceptive of you can also hear some noise coming from the western opening - coming from the darkness. It sounds like raspy paper or maybe burning paper as the ash falls to the ground.

Lief frustrates as a second darkness occurs. He looks about for the source of the creature blocking Kaylayne's forehead light, but sees nothing. When he hears the raspy sound, his stomach clenches, uncertain of what is to arrive, but sure of its unsavory nature. He quaffs another vial, and steadies himself at the rear for whatever comes through the western tunnel. Cast True Strike

Seeing the opportunity, Dimitrio nods to Garridan and steps in front of him to get to the other drow.

He lunged with his rapier, hoping to strike his foe dead before he could retaliate with his crossbow.

Garridan deals roughly with the drow dropping him quickly with a critical hit! Ederin lies unconscious on the floor. Dimitrio starts off round three with a solid hit, though he does not connect his critical.

Meanwhile the soft crunching sound continues and increases in volume and speed until a form of darkness and evil (link) bursts into the light, seeming to fly through the air and, partially, the ground - pouncing on Lief and attacking him viciously. It screeches as it lands and the whole room echoes with its cries.

The creature rips into Lief, and though the wounds look horrible and blood flies, the actual damage is fairly slight.

As the echo fades, you think you heard a giggle from the passage beyond. Strangely, you look past the shadowy form and see the secret door close in on you with a soft ominous click, like a trap resetting. You could swear the small albino gecko with bulging red eyes smiled as it nudged the door closed with its nose.

Lief turns pale as the ghostly creature erupts into the room, only to flay him alive. His mind races about the kind of devilry wrought by the drow to bring this thing into existence.

"Lief!" Kaylayne says the thing begins to flense skin from Lief. She looks down at the ring on her left hand, the gift from Samaritha. Sighing, she activates the ring, targeting the black evil.

The creature howls with delight as it slides to a stop. It turns and attacks Garridan for so impudently attacking him.

Lief looks about the room, Ederin close to death on the floor, the secret door closed against their retreat. As Kaylayne beats it back, after it savages Garridan much more harshly, Lief steps up on the blackness, and swings at it, trying to get its attention. "My turn, I suppose. Garridan's had enough, show me what you've got." Move 10'+ into melee, difficult terrain. If the creature has been pushed back, Lief follows it forward.

Is this the day I die, Garridan wonders as the beast claws him. Just when he is about to give up hope Lief rushes in telling him to seek safety. Relieved Garridan steps back and casts a spell.

Garridan, you cannot 5' step in difficult terrain I think. Unless you do another blessing. I'll assume you do that - just take another use off and we're good. Alternatively you can cast defensively and stay in place, or withdraw and cast next round. Just let me know your choice.

Garridan steps away and heals himself. Ederin continues to chill, really, really well. Dimitrio connects again with a crunch and finally drops his foe (you have a move action left if you want to join Mr. Crispy).

Mr. Crispy reacts confidently as he fails to be shifted by Kaylaynes ring. Unable to reach the retreating Garridan, he focuses on the present Lief.

The blood pulsing in his neck slows on the right side. His vision dims unilaterally, and Lief staggers a bit after the creature lets up. When Kaylayne bellows, Lief takes the command as meant for himself. He reloads the crossbow shakily, and takes another shot, remaining in front of the blackness, now accompanied by drifts of blackness through his sight.

With the drow down, Dimitrio turned his attention to the other menace in the cave.

The loose rocks prevented him from reaching it for a strike but he stood in front of Lief, rapier on high trying to protect the young man.

since I can't reach it and strike, I'll double move and take one for Lief if possible

I think your sacred weapon damage is a d8 instead of a d6 at this level. Don’t sweat it for your last round, you rolled well so we’ll just keep it. But in the future. :)

Garridan rushes up and strikes his foe, doing damage now that his weapon is more powerful! Ederin wonders just how long this is going to last as he stares at the ceiling. Dimitrio double moves into position.

The dark figure grimaces at this latest atrocity, and tries it’s best to rip apart his newly recovered foe before he himself falls.
