The party wanders off, presumably to do some hunting. You could swear you hear some shouting from Zincher's camp an hour or so later, but it must have been nothing...

If you're on the northern side of the island you can see Zincher's ship, and it departs on time, around 2pm sailing north toward Riddleport and safety. You have 6 days to wait.

There's not much to hunt on the island, outside Akatas and strange zombies. Certainly nothing that you'd call challenging. Morning turns into evening and you find yourselves near the cave for safety, but you can camp outside if you like.

All in all, it's an idyllic day, with no akatas or zombies in sight. Very pleasant.

I presume the standard watches overnight.

Supposed to be my mates, I've had your back in every fight, but you would rather put your trust in that rat then even consider that I might be right? And you'd travel with the man that almost killed an innocent cook just for a laugh?"

Lief grimaces as Ederin expresses his position. When the group decides to wait for the Flying Cloud, or proxy, he relaxes. But only a little. "Ederin, I totally understand your hostility towards Zincher. The only reasons I considered traveling with him back to Riddleport pertained to the hazardous circumstances that are likely still churning. We have Akron's assurances that no akata are aboard that ship, but we hardly know the man. Time will tell if we chose our trust well enough, and that ship did, in fact, carry no otherworldly creatures back into Riddleport harbor. We also have a new problem to discuss with Kwava- the 'Armageddon Echo'. It's like we're living through the events of the Plucking of the Star all over again, except Shindiira's journal gives us no date as to the event referred to as the Echo. Can we really afford to wait around for several more days, when Armageddon could occur, gods know where? I'm just saying that crisis makes for strange bedfellows, and we may have made a mistake not returning to Riddleport sooner." Lief shrugs, unsure, himself.

Ederin wrote:
"If you stay here I have something I'd like you to look at, maybe back at the cave. Otherwise I'll show you when I get back to the goblin, supposin' we all live long enough to get see it again."

Lief nods, looking over at Garridan for a moment. "Are you sure you don't want to ask the god man for help? If you have a new rash, or you discovered a bite, he might be a better man to consult." He waits for Ederin to elaborate.

Ederin leads the group back toward the cave, assuming that will be there base of operations for the remainder of there time on the island. "If we keep an eye out each afternoon we might catch a ride earlier after all, but if we die then no one makes a report to Kwava."

On arrival Ederin heads into the room they discovered Virashi's ghost in, closing the door behind him. After a few moments he calls Lief over.

Lief:

Directing the young man to the back of the room Ederin points to a locked trunk that was not previously there. Ederin rubs the back of his head and shrugs his shoulders.

"I, uh, well I knicked this from Zincher's tent." He bites his lower lip to stop the self satisfied smile forming on his face. "It's locked an' I ain't so good with that stuff, I was hopin' maybe you could take a look."

Ederin:

Lief troubles to understand the course of events leading to an up-until-now-unrecognized trunk. With the archer's new penchant for tattoos that condense such things into two-dimensional depictions which can be returned to three, the young man nods in appreciation. "You stole from Zincher. Not only that, you got away with it. I'm impressed. He could have easily put our group arriving, and his trunk disappearing together. Wait, no. The yelling came later." Lief shakes his head, smirking.

"Alright then. Let's take a look, shall we?"

Roll 20 Map

Ederin and Lief:
The trunk is not trapped, but very difficult to open (you have to take-20, twice), but it’s yield is nothing short of incredible.

Inside are several ledgers for all Zincher’s businesses (legitimate and illicit), a ledger tracking his own personal (and considerable) wealth, and copies of deeds for the places he owns in Riddleport (the originals are all held in town).

The amount of information held within these documents can ruin Zincher in any manner of ways. Although they could be used by Magnimar or Korvosa to effect an arrest, if the contents were made public, the lords of Riddleport would act swiftly to hang him, since as these records plainly show, there’s hardly anyone in the city who hasn’t been double or triple crossed by Zincher at some point.

Any of Riddleport’s crimelords (or even the overlord himself) would gladly pay thousands of gold for these documents. Their use in a more lawful environment is possibly greater still, though you’d get less cash for them surely. And of course Zincher himself could be blackmailed...

The trunk also contains a rough map of Devil’s Elbow. The map indicates all the sites where bits of Noqual were found (mostly around the crater), but more importantly, a single “X” marks a spot on the southern shore along the cliffs not far from the campsite. This X is the location of the drow encampment. So Zincher clearly knew about them.

In addition, beneath all the papers, Zincher keeps three large sacks holding 500gp each in assorted coins and two small bags. One of the small bags contains eight beryls worth 40 gp apiece, and the other holds four rubies and a black pearl, worth 100 gp each. Finally, the trunk also contains several lumps of noqual ore - 35 pounds of the stuff in all.

Ederin:

Lief works his way through the paperwork, coming across several names of which he's unfamiliar, and many he knows quite well. "Ederin, you mad man, you. This is... quite damning... You've got Zincher by the testicles here." The young man stands, and pats the trunk. "We should bring the others here, and show them. Unless... you don't want to." Lief waits for an understanding of Ederin's disposition first.

Lief:

Ederin can hardly put words together at first when he realizes that street rat from rotgut may actually have the upperhand on one of the most powerful men in Riddleport. He looks over every document as it's taken from the trunk and though he may not grasp the full weight of everything he's stolen, he's smart enough to realize the host of options suddenly available to him.

"Yeah, yeah Lief, you're right, lets get the rest of them in here. I want to hear what everyone think."

Ederin leaves the room to go round up the rest of his companions, ushering them to the back of the cave to reveal what he uncovered with Leif's help. Feel free to read the above spoilers.

Once everyone has had sufficient time to consider the news, Ederin speaks up.

"Way I see it we've got options, a lot of 'em, the only one we don't have is returnin' this chest to Zincher. He'd likely kill us on the spot, so ain't worth the time yellin' at me if that's what you're plannin'."

"We could turn this over to the overlord, he'd probably reward us pretty nice, or to we could make a deal with any of the other crime bosses, maybe get in good with the cyphermages. Might even be able to blackmail Zincher but I don't like that idea and he'd probably attack us after too long anyway. Could maybe even turn these in to one of the other free cities but gettin' them involved in Riddleport law doesn't seem right."

He looks at his assembled friends with a seriousness he doesn't usually employ.
"I ain't been on such good terms with some o' you lately, but I figure we've been in the thick of it together for a long time now, I want to know what you think I should do with this information, can't promise I'll do it, but right now I ain't so sure how to play my hand."

Roll 20 Map

A note on the trunk. it is very large, unwieldy, and heavy (reinforced).

No way any one person could move it without help. It's almost designed that way you suspect. Makes it very hard to steal.

Dimitrio's first reaction is that of his safety, personal and the group's.

"Holy s@%+, Shorty. You just painted a target as big as a house on all of us! As soon as Zincher figures out the trunk is missing, he's going to come knocking on our door."

He scoffs, "You don't think he's going to blame a damn demon-cat, do you?"

He shakes his head, "And we may still be on this island without anyone else's support when he comes after us."

He looks around to see what others think, "I don't like this. Not one bit. If we get out of this island, then we can do plenty of things to Zincher. But here and on our own... we are very vulnerable."

Lost in thought, Lief does surface for a quick response. "Actually, it's the perfect place, if he's made the trek out here alone. He might seek to venture in here, hoping to keep his loss to himself. Or not." Lief continues thinking.

Like Dimitrio, Kaylayne reacts with concern.

"There ain't a lot of other suspects on this island, Ederin. Zincher is a smart man, he's going to figure it out," Kaylayne says, her *exact* fear coming to pass. Kaylayne raises her voice, getting angry. "Remember when I said I didn't want to be involved? Remember how I said I didn't want to be involved in a fight? DID YOU NOT HEAR ME EDERIN!? FOR F#@*'S SAKE...WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO PICK FIGHTS FOR ME!?"

Kaylayne storms away, then storms back.

"Akron saw us all talking to him...except for you. He saw us distracting him...and he knows you're with us. We're all f%+*ing complicit you raging f$*$ing a~%+~!%! For f#*&'s sake...you just put me in Zincher's crosshairs though I didn't do anything. I just wanted to get back and be about my business. But f@@&ity f$#~! You just had to drag me in."

Kaylayne takes a breath.

"F+++! I thought the idiot Boy would be the one doing stupid things...but I expected him just to get himself in trouble, not all of us. I almost expected that hot-headed half-wit boy to get us in trouble...but I expected better from you."

"F~%%. Ederin. I expected better from you. Why did you have to drag me in...?" Kaylayne loses steam, her rage passing, still trying to get the magnitude of the situation in control in her mind.

:). I think I can hear GM Evilan giggling in his chair after aiding and abetting that heist. Well played, Evilan.

Ederin expected the admonishment, he'd even prepared himself for it, but being yelled at by Dimitrio and Kaylayne still got under his skin.

"I wasn't pickin' a fight, I was gettin' proof that I needed because no one could be bothered to believe me. I'm good enough to take poison bolts to the chest, but I got an idea in my head about anythin' else an' its just delusion." He shakes his head angrily and turns back to the contents of the chest, keeping his back to everyone.

"I don't know who you thought I was, but it should be clear now. I ain't gonna sit around and wait for a knife in the back, an' now I got all the proof I need to put Zincher in the ground for good. Kaylayne ignores Ederin's jibe about the temple thugs. They had picked that fight, not me. I tried to walk away.

"Oh cut the s++!, Ederin. THINK! We're not getting home!" Kaylayne responds. "Your f$!# up is going to get us killed. Listen, I know you don't want to hear it, but Zincher knows if was us. And, to make matters worse, he loses nothing in assuming it was us."

Kaylayne slows down so the others can keep up.

"Point 1: Akron will confirm that he saw four of us about the time period the chest was borrowed."

"Point 2: If Zincher suspects the drow, then he might go there now or be on his way...once he sees what we've done to them, then he'll know it's us. That is if Akron doesn't tell Zinch that we were wearing new fancy drow armor."

"Point 3: Zincher is getting back to Riddleport before us. What's to stop him from gathering a bunch of his men to come back on another boat? Or simply canvassing the docks until he finds our boat? Then he can either hire some assassins or heck, just prevent our boat from coming back at all. He has everything to lose. "

Kaylayne utters some more curses under her breath.

"Point 4: Or he can stuff our return boat with assassins. Or hire some boats to take us out as we return. F&&$ Ederin, f+@$."

Kaylayne looks Ederin in the eyes.

"How do you think we're getting off this island if there is no boat coming back for us?" Kaylayne says, slowly reaching some conclusions.

"F!@* Ederin. F%~$ity f~$!. We gotta go kill Zincher before he leaves the island. We have TO GO NOW. If he leaves, we'll never get home alive. What's more, is that nice boat captain we dealt with is also in danger. F*#!...unless we can stop him, you may have given Zincher free reign to do anything to stop us."

Kaylayne looks at the party.

"We gotta go stop Zincher before he gets away. Do you all understand?"

Dimitrio starts pacing, "Think Dimitrio. Think!"

He turns to Ederin, "Ok Shorty. You stepped in it big time..."

Before Ederin replies, he quickly adds,"But it's OK. You bled with us and we'll bleed with you now."

He turns to Layne,"She's right, you know? If Zincher leaves this island we are at his total mercy. He could come back here with half of Riddleport."

He shakes his head,"He can't leave.Not alive"

He starts readying himself, "OK, how many thugs were still with him? We may even have to deal with whomever comes to pick him up."

He looks at his companions, "Well, unless you all have any better ideas, let's get moving. We can plan our approach on our way there..."

You know of four guards and Akron - but there's a whole ship now. So there's no knowing how many troops will be available - and no knowing where their loyalties lie.

Can we catch them before the ship arrives?

Roll 20 Map

You do not know if the ship is there or not. It may already have arrived, you haven't gone far enough northwest to get a glimpse of the harbor.

I'm going to rule this discussion took place shortly after you left Akron. Seems reasonable that Ederin would want to talk about it sooner rather than later. So you could try to get back to camp before anyone notices the trunk is missing.

You know that Zincher and the four guards were not in camp. Reasonable to assume they were on their way to meet the ship or on their way back from dropping off the first load.

If they left at dawn (reasonable) you'd have an hour or so to make it back to Akron before Zincher does... plenty of time - he's like 20 minutes away.

Garridan fumes with anger but holds his tongue fearing he will say something he might regret. When he has had a chance to think about their situation he chimes in, "What's done is done. Now we need to figure out a way off this island and what we're going to do with this information." Looking to Dimitrio and Layne he asks, " Do we have any magical means to contact Sam?"

Trying to be practical he adds' "we don't need to fight Zincher as ll we need to do is make it to his ship first and steal it. Also, if we kill him all this information is worthless."

I don't care that we kill him or capture him, but he can't get back to Riddleport without us. You don't know if Zincher owns this ship as you haven't seen it yet - but he does own at least one ship according to the docs you lightly examined.

Missed your earlier ruling actually, Ederin would not have materialized the trunk so close to the camp we wouldn't have seen the documents yet if that's the case.

Roll 20 Map

The cave, where you produced the trunk, is only 20-30 minutes from Zincher's camp. It's the only 'safe' place on the island really so it seems likely you'd have opened it there. No?

Roll 20 Map

OK, so conversed with Ederin offline (poor man's at work!). The trunk has not yet been opened, but the party knows an important trunk has been stolen of Zincher's.

I think you'd all still react as you have. You'd not know exactly how important the trunk is to Zincher, but you'd know it was important - maybe his most prized possession to have dragged it out here, so far from Riddleport.

So please proceed as you have, but do let me know if you're headed toward the docks or toward the camp.

Sorry for any confusion. :)

I should also note that Ederin has two tattoos: 1)A sack (containing 83 pounds of noqual), and 2) Zincher's chest. If we do steal the ship we'll be leaving a significant portion of loot behind.

For the record, Kaylayne never suggested to steal Zincher's boat. She said to kill/disable Zincher so he could summon enough troops to make it impossible for the party to return to Riddleport (I think he might pursue several methods, he has few constraints).

Not sure where to go from here. I'm not sure Kaylayne would have freaked so hard had she not known what was in the chest, because it wouldn't be clear to her that everything that Z holds of value is within. That's sort of her key point...he stops at nothing to get it back and he knows it's us that took it. Now that it could contain his spare socks, things are different.

I'll let you all drag Kaylayne along with what you decide.

Lief looks back and forth, between all the exchanges. He smiles politely as he's berated by the barmaid. He listens to the deprecating dancer, and the bold barman, as talk of piracy arises.

"Stealing ships, attacking a crimelord on the shore... what has gotten into you all? We held audience with the man not a week ago, and I called him 'stupid', to his face. I'm surprised I haven't been flensed for my blasphemy, after the fact." The young man taps his lip.

"I say we see them off, before they depart. Let them see that we have nothing to hide. If you have drow armor on, remove it for now. Akron is the only one that's seen it, likely, and the only one we need to convince is Zincher himself. Akron has our back, because he could have called me on my lie regarding our noqual haul, and didn't." He pauses, in case he rouses further anger.

"We are not stealing a ship. It's his ship, regardless of true ownership. He's a powerful crimelord, and the captain values his life. We have our own resources. Two, in fact. The Flying Cloud, and a second ship, possibly, sent by Samaritha, who is in no way in danger here. Let's be reasonable. If Zincher departs, seeing us not lugging around this trunk of his, then it's obviously not as important as we may believe it to be. He wouldn't leave it behind, otherwise. It probably just contains the noqual he was lucky to scavenge."

"As for picking fights, if we arrive on shore, and he starts one, well then... we didn't start it, and his men will see it with their own eyes, and can decide for themselves." Lief shrugs his shoulders, and looks at the others, before starting off for the docks.

"Hurry now. Divest, so we may catch up with those at the docks."

Dimitrio shakes his head, "I still think that if Zincher values whatever is in this trunk, he will know it's missing and he will blame us!"

He raises his hands, palms up, "Look at it from our perspective. If something went missing from our camp, who would you blame? And if they lied to you, you would try and get a confession from them."

He sighs, "I'll go along with what you all think it's best but I think the only way that we are off Zincher's suspicious list is if the trunk were somehow returned."

"That would only make things worse. We show up to the docks and suddenly so does the trunk? That's confirmation that we stole it and if there's anythin' he doesn't want seen inside he'll probably assume we've opened it and know his dirty secret. At least for now he might only have suspicions."

Ederin shakes his head. "Barely anytime has passed since we left the camp and there's no way just one man carried Zincher's chest. Akron can confirm that only I was missin' for a little while. The only way we're in trouble here is if Zincher knows about these magic needles I picked up, and if he does, it means he was extremely familiar with the drow operation, in which case we'd be better off killin' him anyway."

Ederin thinks over the plan Lief proposed and adds his own thoughts to it. "You said Zincher was charging noqual for passage, why don't we just pretend we're at the docks to barter for passage with gold, or labor? He'll probably deny us, which means we don't need to travel on his boat, but if he suspects us it might help clear our name. We still don't even know he suspects us. He might figure his own men stole it, or stuck it under a pile of other goods on the docks."

Kaylayne's jaw drops at the poor arguments put forth by Ederin and Lief.

"You think Zincher's never heard of magic, Ederin? Lief? You think I can't name about a dozen ways to accomplish that magically? That they can't or don't see it is a poor defense when magic could be involved," Kaylayne says, shaking her head.

"Let's hope *he* doesn't have much magic at his disposal, because I can think of a spell that would point right to that tattoo of yours if Zincher has access right now," Kaylayne continues, still trying to find a way out of the predicament that Ederin had ensnared her.

Kaylayne cusses again.

"Damnit, Ederin. You should have asked before you dragged us into this."

Kaylayne bites her lip.

"We got to go take Zincher out. No bluffs, no games, no nothing. He knows we stole from him. And we know if he gets back to town he gets a lot more men about him. We need to take him out while he's weak. We should go to where his ship is. If he's there, we attack. If he's not, we wait for him to show." Kaylayne shakes her head as if not wanting to say what she is saying.

Roll 20 Map

The party has walked up the hidden trail to the main east-west trail as they chat.

Two plans do I see before me. Move on the boat, killing Zincher at the first opportunity, and returning the luggage hoping it won't be noticed.

The shouting I described earlier also didn't happen. Not yet. Just to be clear, we moved back in time to before that happened. Zincher may know the trunk is missing, and he might not. It depends on what magics he may have had on the trunk.

That said, it also seems likely that Akron would know by now. Unless he hasn't been in Zincher's tent since your departure. He was packing one of the lesser tents when you left... maybe you got lucky.

"I say we lay low and see if they leave, but it looks like I'm not winnin' that fight. I ain't returning this thing Carini, not while I live. Maybe Zincher can find the tattoo magically, and if he does, then he started the fight an' we kill him. Either way it sounds like the rest of you want to go to the docks."

Ederin looks at Kay and shakes his head.

"I did ask. I must have asked a hundred times to investigate Zincher but you and Garry were convinced I was crazy. You brushed off the possibility that Zincher was going to rain death in my city because you didn't care. So don't tell me what I should have done."

Lief rolls his eyes, tiring of the woman's hysterics. "Calm down, Kaylayne. Ederin pilfered the trunk, and apparently no one knows, since no alarm has been raised, and Ederin still stands uninjured. No wards, no glyphs, no alarms. Seems like a pretty mundane trunk, wouldn't you say? If the trunk were really all that important, wouldn't the man have already put in place magics to protect it? Sure, if the man puts to use magic to locate his trunk, it would draw him straight to Ederin's privates, yes?" Lief tries to avoid Kaylayne's dripping condescension, and mostly succeeds.

"Well, it looks like we all at least agree to head to the docks. I'm all for it. If there's a train of men working their way back and forth loading, we might be able to talk with Zincher with thinned support. As I said before, shall we go now?"

"OK, OK. I get it, Shorty. That was my suggestion for getting out of this unscathed. Did I tell you that I want to die in a soft bed with succubi nursing my every need? Well, that isn't happening if I'm killed in this piece of s*$! excuse for an island!"

Trying to calm himself and use his energy in productive ways, Dimitrio falls in line and agrees to go to the docks.

Roll 20 Map

GM Rolls:
1d20 ⇒ 11d20 ⇒ 6

The group, tentatively in some cases, forcefully in others, turns west and follows the trail back to the ruined village. From there, you begin the slow, twisty incline down to the docks. You do see a ship in port and, through a gap in the trees, see some sailors loading things from the docks onto the ship on this clear morning. They don’t seem to be in a particular hurry, and look nearly done - though it’s hard to say for sure from this distance.

Shortly thereafter you hear some commotion in the forest ahead, and quickly (one full round prep allowed) Zincher himself comes into view! He’s trailed by a half dozen guards and a few more bearers. When he sees you, he’s taken aback for a moment, and then he seems to recognize you and the strength returns to his stature.

”Greetings! Have you changed your mind about leaving early? My ship is in port, such as it is.” he chuckles, ”The port, not the ship naturally.” he seems in a very good mood indeed.

I’m expecting one of you to act aggressively and that will plunge us into initiative. He’s utterly flat footed however, so you may all act in this ’surprise’ round. So one standard action and a 5’ step or one move action only to start things off. There is a new map in place. I am not showing the bearers on the map - they’ll not be engaging, but rather running off into the trees at the first opportunity.

Lief steps up. "We really did consider joining you for the trip back, and at least thought about seeing you off at the docks. Hoping our own ship may have come on unexpectedly. How much was it again to book passage?" Lief smiles.

"You seem to be in a very good mood today. After all the island activity, I would have assumed relief, at best."

"I am in a good mood. The sun is shining and I'm getting off this rock with plenty of Noqual - not that I couldn't use more of course. If'n you want me to haul you back to Riddleport, I'd be glad to, for only two pounds of Noqual each. Easy and you'll be sleeping in your own beds by nightfall!"

Dimitrio bites his lip trying not to accept the offer. Two pounds of noqual and sleeping in the Goblin tonight sounded great to the bard.

Seeing how Lief had already spoken, he waited to see what Ederin would do.

Also waiting on Garridan to catch up, we're heard from Kaylayne plenty, but as this is a pivotal scene, hoping to get inputs from all.

Taking a cue Kaylaynes book, Ederin casts a spell on his bow before they get too close to the docks. Once Zincher is in sight, he hangs back and lets Lief approach the crime boss, but does not draw his weapon, opting instead to listen and discern the man's intent.

Zincher and his men move up a little so you're not shouting quite so much. He smiles at Garridan.

"So what's it gonna be? Want to grab a spot on my boat?"

Then he hesitates, and begins to look a little uneasy. He rests his hand nearer his weapon, a giant two headed pickaxe, but he does not draw it.

"Well?" he asks a little more sternly.

His face grows red, and he immediately jumps to action. He quickly quaffs a potion he had stealthily maneuvered into his hand and draws his weapon, a monstrous pickaxe as he steps behind a tree for some cover.
