To speed things along--Talon easily detects the frogs went straight at the game path intersection, not to the right. It has taken exceptional tracking skill with the help of Kalthos shouted instructions to get you this close to the racing frogs. Be sure to read the spoiler when you get to the clearing. You all hear primal screaming and hooting clearly ahead.
You have been running the last 8 rounds at run speed, you need to start making endurance checks when you run a number of rounds equal to your CON, but I think everyone has at least a 10 CON. If Telethal doesn't move at 4x my math had him 8x(120-90')=240' behind--so he gets to make a CON check to go faster. Telethal has managed to run at four times his run speed to almost keep up because he is determined not to miss this fight. He needs to make a DC 10 CON check (1d20 plus CON bonus) to avoid arriving fatigued. If Telethal fails his CON check he arrives on turn 2 fatigued with Kalthos. If he passes he arrives on Turn 1 with Seltyn, Elorin and Talon.
To speed things along, you can plot your movement again. Just put four turns of movement down on the map. We might not get all the way to the fourth turn, but I want things to move along. Note Kalthos can move on the map round 2; it is possible to delay and wait for Kalthos (and possibly Telethal--see above) to show up. Just put a 2 by everyone and skip (wait) the first round. Yellow squares and the game trail are not difficult terrain, the green and white is. Remember you can run on ALL yellow and green squares at 4x movement if lightly armored and 3x if heavily armored but there are defensive penalties (Core 188-run). Put an R by your name if you are doing this.
To make this encounter much clearer for the players--I will immediately stop the movement the moment action occurs and summarize who goes when. All future planned movement ends the moment you contact hostiles.

Knowledge Nature roll to remember everything I know about the apes 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Adopting the pose that the apes are using, Talon begins attempting to hoot and holler in a similar method to them, using everything he remembers about these kinds of apes from the lessons that his father used to give him.
Wild empathy roll to try and increase their relationship with at least me.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Chainmail |
My bad--no roll required - do not know why I thought Telethal had heavy armor. It is all the rage in the dwarf party.
That makes it much easier--Kalthos will we one round behind. Talon now leads everyone to the clearing and you can read the spoiler. Survival Talon 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
I will place Talon on the first clearing space. Everyone else can be right behind in any order. Except Kalthos, who is exactly one run action to the edge on the clearing.
Lady Ciedrel for Marlamin if his life is or becomes endangered
1d20 ⇒ 14
Seltyn Sevenleaf |
Talon tracking and dealing with the apes, Telethal, Seltyn, Elorin, and Kalthos, moving as quick as we can. If Talon can distract the apes, we'll try to move past them and keep looking.
perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Kalthos Pennas |
Kal follows the group at full tilt, just seconds behind them, rubbing his shoulder after falling on it again.
I'll just wait until my turn comes around again? I'm not 100% sure what the group will decide to do, plus I don't know what's in the clearing, so I dunno what to pre-post
Talon Moonwalker |
If everyone places themselves on the map in the marching order, then that will be a good start. Based on everything she has said, I am going to assume that Elorin is right behind me, so will take the liberty of placing her there.
Just to speed things along a little, how did the wild empathy check go? I am just trying to calm the apes down enough that they won't attack me or anyone else. I think Talon has spotted the DC spoiler, if so, does it look like there is anything I can do to help?
Chainmail |
At the moment, the apes have not approached the 30' range of Wild Empathy. They are 80' up in the trees.
To post the initiatives as no surprise is possible here.
Adjusted Initiative for round 1 All to act and see each other except frogs which are not visible to anyone.
Elorin 22 <--- to act (Talon points to the X where the frogs went)
Talon 21
Frogs 20
Kalthos 19
Seltyn 11

Telethal 4
Talon's knowledge nature reveals them to be apes (I know that doesn't help, but you did made a DC 10). No one had a Perception roll 2 high enough to read the spoiler yet.
Talon Moonwalker |
If I can make another perception roll I will
If I have been here a while, then there is surely a good chance that I will have been studying the area, and possibly thinking harder on the apes. Also, if they are not making moves to attack, then I will not only point out the location the frogs went to, but will also move in that same direction myself[/ooc]

Four frogs (two dragging Marlamin and two dragging Ingwe) fled after the main party arrived down the trail by the lake. Kalthos spotted a fifth frog and tried to describe where it was from his perch, but when he stumbled from the tree, he was unable to find him again. Seltyn, Elorin, and Telethal raced after the four frogs down a game trail (and did not look for the fifth frog), and with Kalthos' warning, missed a dangerous ravine to the right of the game trail. The group after 80 seconds at a dead run arrived in a clearing with tall trees and hooting apes. Kalthos can be seen chasing after you and is about ten seconds behind the group.
Talon quickly spotted the frog's trail to the right of the clearing and the first two squares are marked with Xs on the map. Two unhappy apes are beating their chest on vines 80' up in the air. No one has spotted any frogs, but from the sounds of the chase they were not able to increase their lead beyond about the 100' lead they had in the beginning.
Elorin moves cautiously across the edge of the clearing so as not to antagonize the apes. Talon is waiting at the edge to distract or commune with the apes if they come down. The frogs rustle around in the dense jungle, their lighter coloration may stand out more amongst the greener vegetation here.
Elorin can hear frogs moving about ahead, but cannot see any yet. Elorin is at the first or second X her choice.

Speaking to the whole group as best as he can, Talon speaks quietly The frogs went off to the right, through that section just there. These apes seems disturbed about something, we are on their territory. I want to get moving from here quickly. Follow my lead all of you

Talon smiles at Seltyn, a hard smile. He is learning that the burden of command is not an easy one. It is good he has the strength to lead us when it is needed. It is also good that he has not tried to warn us against getting our friend back from those frogs
My lead, keep a spell ready, an arrow nocked. The apes are just a distraction, they seem happy to be in their trees at the moment. We can possibly deal with them later if we have to. Elorin, cover me.
At this point he will move over to the top X, the one deeper into the jungle and once more begin the hunt.
Chainmail |
The apes quickly decend the 80' to the bottom of the vines and are still agitated. Consider them at ground level now. A young ape comes scurrying out of hiding in the underbrush and hides behind them. He was the PER2 roll, I guess he hid well.

Map chase map
Reposting map for convenience. Actions to follow...
Telethal moves forward carefully, trying to stay close enough to the others to help... keeping himself between them and the apes. As he moves, he keeps his eyes open for the frogs and his spear leveled to intercept the first ape or frog that moves into his reach.
Move to F-7. (Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14).
Then ready an attack action for the first threat (ape or frog) that moves into his threatened squares (which is a 10ft ring around him.)
Readied Attack - Rage + spear attack 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10.
AoO Spear Attack #1 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

AoO Spear Attack #1 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 <-- CRIT?
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
--- CRIT CONFIRM 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
--- Total crit damage 15 + 2d8 + 18 ⇒ 15 + (8, 2) + 18 = 43

Lumbering forward on his knuckles and legs the 400# adult ape rushes up to Telethal cautiously hooting and hollering. He seems to respect the spear held at the ready. As soon as the ape comes within 10' Telthal enrages and strikes at the ape narrowly hitting him. The ape closes further to 5' trying to unsuccessfully avoid the spear with agile maneuvres 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18, but again the jab with the spear narrowly hits him, and fatally this time. The ape falls to the ground with two large puncture wounds and is profusely bleeding.
The smaller adult back by the trees seems more agitated and starts a different set of hoot and calls.
Telethal has two more AoOs in reserve.
Talon Moonwalker |
Talon winces as the ape falls. He had been working on communicating with those noble creatures, and he sensed that there was a good chance that there would be no further issues with the apes. They would hopefully be scared off by the senseless killing of the male.
He stands to his full height quickly, and then silently follows the tracks that he knows are there.
Using old rolls or do I roll again?
Chainmail |
Per 1 was for the frogs
The frogs were waiting behind a thicket, but elven eyesight and the more drastic contrast in the deep jungle allows Talon to pick their hiding spot at 7' range. They have 20% concealment in their spot and Talon has only moved 10' (jungle squares cost double). I assume Elorin is delaying to go with Talon,
Elorin Silentall |
Elorin raises her bow moves forward to get line of sight and fires at Frog with marl. She is determined not to let her friend be taken. i have moved myself on map
Miss chance roll
1d100 ⇒ 91
Hit roll
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
If hit, damage roll
1d8 ⇒ 8
Stupid apes distracted me, cant believe I (most likely) missed. least I didn't hit Marl.
Seltyn Sevenleaf |
Seltyn will try to spot the frogs, now that he's got a clue from Elorin.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Or not. At any rate, he gets close to Elorin and Talon. On the map.
On his turn, he's got a spell that will take care of the frogs.
Talon Moonwalker |
Trusting in his own abilities and the strength of his bow, Talon once more lets fly with two arrows. It seemed like such a natural attack pattern now, he wondered why it had taken him so long to learn how to let one arrow fly, and whilst that one was still in the air, let a second one fly as well.
Shooting at the only frog he can see, seeing Marlamin is trouble, so much blood and the like all over his body. Feeling the rage and the confidence.
Arrow 1
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Arrow 2
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Arrow 2 crit confirm
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
1d8 + 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + (8) + 1 = 14
Hopefully those shots will kill the frog off. If that's the case, then I want to step into Marl's square and basically protect him as best as I can.
Even as Talon lets both arrows fly, he knows that the first one is unlikely to have any impact on the frog's hide. The second however looks like a better shot, felt better set on the bow.
His was the instinct to protect his companions. His was the instinct to take no quarter, and when his friends were in danger protect them as best as he was able to.
His were the instincts of the hunter. At that moment there was nothing else but him and the prey. It would be a long time before he could reliably hit the prey with every single arrow, but he had heard of people were were able to let off some 6 arrows or more in mere seconds.
He knew that that was what he wanted to be able to learn. Despite all the dangers, the fact that he had gained his first ever dangerous kill with the bow meant that it was to be his weapon of choice for all time.
Some would most likely criticize him for using it exclusively when there would be times that the sword would be more useful, but almost anyone could swing a sword, there were few that could claim complete mastery of the bow. To be able to send an arrow exactly where you wanted it to go, no doubts, no worries was a skill that he did not as yet possess. He would learn it.
First thing to do however was to speak to Lady Ciedril about perhaps getting a bow with a slightly higher draw weight. Even now with his rather crude knowledge of the bow and how it worked, he knew that he was not able to exert his full strength into the bow for fear of snapping it.
TL.DR: Talon got pissed off at the frogs and had a small personal epiphany {sp?)
Chainmail |
Conceal 1d100 ⇒ 16
The two arrows narrowly misses the frog in the thicket, they have no cover, they are just harder to see than in the open.
The frogs leave the concealment of the thicket to attack.
Talon 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 131d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 61d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Elorin 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 221d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 61d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Elorin is hit for 6 and is grappled -- Talon is missed. The speed of Talons arrows and their hiding spot precludes an AoO by the frogs for missile fire. Kalthos and Seltyn to go.

Remember jungle squares are difficult terrain so they cost double (10') of movement.

I do believe that we might be in a bit of trouble with those apes. Made sense to kill it for getting too close, but then again it looked to be peaceful at the time. Unless anyone has any better ideas, I am thinking we CDG the frogs, pick Marl and Ingwe up, and then return to the village for the night to rest up before going back to the ruins in the new day. Either that or we run the risk of getting killed.
