Stealth vs opposed perception:
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26

Talon notices a crocodile gliding towards him through the water. His shot at the frogs is now more difficult as he won't see them now until Mar is engaged. Crocodile is on the map now. Do you still fire at the frogs?
Seltyn/Mar:
These frogs are giant tree frogs, much bigger than normal frogs, and they are known to be poisonous at times.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Oh dear god, more stealth rolls!!! Still need word on how you are dealing with critical hits, I believe my second arrow got one.

You can confirm a critical with the second shot.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Crit conform roll 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Assuming that I simply add the extra 2d8 damage then that gives me an additional

2d8 ⇒ (4, 7) = 11 points of damage

As a free action I will call to Marl and Ingwe Frogs up ahead, get your bloody heads down!

Male Elf Ranger 4

Next round action is to head up back towards the support group as the move action, and then fire off again with two arrows at the crocodile.

Round 1's actions:

Attack roll 1
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
1d8 ⇒ 6

Attack roll 2
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
1d8 ⇒ 1

Was that at a croc or frog you hit for 18? The plan was to have Marlamin, Ingwe and Talon move to contact before anyone else was to move. I had Kalthos with the waiting group before the action started. The croc is waiting for his surprise round action too. You were first.

Male Elf Ranger 4
Chainmail wrote:

First one on the frog, second one on the croc, something tells me he might be the bigger problem of this encounter. As I said, next rounds worth of actions is basically me heading away from the croc. Also shouting to Kalthos to go and help Ingwe and Marl. Move action to move 30foot up to the support group, and then it will be a case of pinging as many arrows as I can at the croc and hoping like hell it doesn't think I am too tasty

Male Elf Ranger 4

Kalthos had already mentioned several times before that he wanted to stay near my character, therefore I took the liberty of moving him so that he was close to me

f Elf bard/4. Init +2/Low-Light Vision/Perception +11/ AC16, T12: FF14/

DM, perception roll to hear Talon shout at Marl and Ingwe?

20 + 8 = 28

With a nat 20 I hope I hear him.

If I hear:

"guys it sounds like, Marl and Talon are in trouble! Elorin will move up to help and suggest the others join. (taking a full round to move the 60ft)

Male Elf Ranger 4

Btw, those arrows being shot by me in ROund 1 need +1 to all rolls on top of current modifiers for point blank shot. Therefore should read 14, 7, 15, 2 as the values

Croc and frogs and Talon act in the surprise round with Talon first.

Mar, Ingwe and Kalthos are flatfooted in the surprise round. I have not resolved croc or frog attacks for surprise round yet.

Surprise round arrow 1 missed, surprise round arrow 2 hit for 18. Did it hit a frog or the croc?

Above is my attempt to do google docs for a map.

Just putting the map on this page, so it's easier.

Seltyn will do as Elorin, and move up carefully this round. k-13

Male Elf Ranger 4

Will be hitting the croc with everything I have. As I said, Talon believes the croc to be the main threat here, plus that skin might be a nice bit of armour later on....

will be doing bardic performance and buffing everyone when it come to my round in combat

Talon places an arrow throught the crocodiles eye severely injuring him, enraged he charges out of the water to attack the unsuspecting rogue he was eying as his prey. A pack of giant tree frogs attacks the unsuspecting druid and companion from hiding. Some frogs couldn't charge the druid and companion, so have to charge the rogue.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Jesus christ Chainmail, those are hard hits!

Screaming to Telethal and the rest. We are swamped here, we needed you yesterday!

Ingwe is grabbed by three frogs and hurt badly.

Marlamin takes 6 and is not grabbed (see below).

Grapple 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Frog 6 wants the rogue 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 231d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 31d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

And hurts him for 3 and has him grappled.

I will post initiative for Round 1.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Where are we in the initiative order? I am pretty confused as to what the hell is going on in this combat. I can roll you attacks till I am blue in the face if you want.

My next attack will be provoking an attack of opportunity from the croc as I once again use point blank shot and rapid shot to kill (hopefully) it.

Arrow 1 attack and damage

1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Ingwe was bitten and these are only somewhat poisonous. So was Marlamin and Kalthos.

Each 2 requires fort save vs DC 10 (wimpy poison too)

First 3 Ingwe, next Mar, then Kalthos.

1d2 ⇒ 21d2 ⇒ 21d2 ⇒ 21d2 ⇒ 11d2 ⇒ 2

Well 3 DC10 FOR saves for Ingwe and one for Kalthos.

M Elf Wiz 9 Init +4/ HP 65/65// AC: 22 18/T:17/FF:14 - Percep: +11/ F 8/R 9/W 8 /CMB 4 - CMD 17

Missile on frog 5, if that's one of the ones on Mar. 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

truly impressive...

Male Wood Elf Druid 2

Trying to get a grasp on things. Ingwe is at 2hp. Mar is at 11hp, and not grappled, right? I didnt understand the checks made.

Saves:

Ingwe's saves:
1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
3: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

Male Elf Ranger 4

Ingwe is in major trouble. She needs to do 3 DC 10 Fort saves, you need to do one as well. I believe Ingwe is grappled, you are not. Make all the attacks you can my friend and let us hope for the best.

Male Wood Elf Druid 2

Looks like Ingwe avoids being poisoned. Yay for luck. I'll post Mar's rolls before trying to figure out how to deal with being grappled lol inexperienced.

Mar and Ingwe are taken completely by surprise, and the frogs do considerable damage. He watches as three frogs attack Ingwe, grabbing her and biting. His companion is clearly close to succumbing to their attack. Enraged, and without thinking, he lashes out at one of the monsters hurting Ingwe.

Attacking frog1, since I think that guy is on Ingwe

Rolls:

Fort Save (if needed): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Attack=1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Dmg=1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Wow. I have a bay day and you guys roll through a couple of rounds of combat.
Round 1: best I can do is double move to J-16. I updated the map.

Telethal comes a'runnin', spear in hand.

Should I go ahead and do round 2?

Male Elf Ranger 4

With the Croc now down and out, Talon will be using his bow on the frogs to clear them off his allies.

Round 2
Arrow 1
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Arrow 2
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Round 3

Arrow 1
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Arrow 2
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Round 4

Arrow 1
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Arrow 2
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Rinse and repeat as needed

In an effort to not hold the game up, here's Telethal's round 2 actions. Basicaly, I'd like him to roar into combat, step up to where the first row of frogs is in range of his spear, then crush it, with Raging spear attacks. :)

The tall half-blood unleashes weeks of rage on the poor frogs, stabbing frantically with the long spear.

Move > Rage > Spear-strike
Spear 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17.

If any frogs try to close on Telethal...:
He can take up to three AoO's.
Spear AoO 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14.
.
Spear AoO 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15.
.
Spear AoO 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
--- Damage 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14.

Update - Ingwe has resisted all the poison and is at 2hp.
Marlamin is ready to go and can treat jungle favorable terrain. A 5' step does not provoke an Attack of Opportunity. Marlamin did not need to save, his bite was the only without any juice in it.

Talon fires two arrows round one and finishes off the crocodile. (Jumped ahead a little, but no problem).

Mar hits a frog for 10. Frogs act after Mar. Elorin will rush down the trail. Note: You can move more than a move - move, but you don't know if the alligator has a mate. If you don't have heavy armor you can move at 4x your speed (3x in heavy), but you are easy to hit (core page 188).
2d8 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13

Frog attacks Ingwe
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 211d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Male Wood Elf Druid 2

Well, I guess I dont have to worry about figuring out how Ingwe will act while grappled.

Ingwe is now at -2hp. I think, but am not sure, that to stabilize he has to pass a DC10 check, with a -2 modifier cuz he's at -2hp, right?

Ingwe's Rolls:

Stabilize:1d20 - 2 ⇒ (9) - 2 = 7
Ingwe fails to stabilize, and will continue losing hp each turn, right?

And that puts Mar at -3hp.

Mar's Rolls for next turn:

Stabilize:1d20 - 3 ⇒ (19) - 3 = 16

2 flanking Mar and 1 not
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 201d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 241d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Dam 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 51d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 31d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Grapple 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 if needed

Was Talon staying in the fray or was he withdrawing?
Frogs 3 and 6 still to act.

Grab (Ex) If a creature with this special attack hits with the indicated attack (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Mar is stable, Ingwe is still bleeding.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 2

WOW! a lot happens around here really fast.
Let me know if I'm missing something

Fort Save
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Turn 1

Spoiler:

So I've taken 3 hp of damage and am grappled, and possibly poisoned all from one frog. Guess i'd better do my best to kill that frog!

hmmm well, as I didn't get an AoA they must have improved grapple or something nasty like that. I suppose it'd be best to not try escape and instead make an attack with the -2 penalty?

Of course this is all assuming the poison hasn't somehow incapacitated me :P

Attack
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16(+2 STR, +1 Mstwk, -2 Grappled)
praying

Damage
1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Kalthos' hit breaks the grapple. Was Talon holding his ground? An earlier post had him moving back down the path. If he stands his ground he will be an archer engaged, but then he may soak hits for Kalthos.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Talon is completely surrounded by the frogs, some of them worryingly taking up flanking positions around him and his friends. Having been lucky enough so far to not take a single hit, he felt Marl's pain to see the beautiful Ingwe go down and not rise once more. Cursing their luck to be swamped in this manner, he shoots fast at Frog 5, despite knowing that engaging something in melee combat whilst using his bow is folly, but seeing little other option.

Attacks of Opportunity triggered again.

Attacking frog 5

Arrow 1
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Arrow 2
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Frog 3 attacks the annoying bowman. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Frog 6 attacks the flatfooted rogue. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Damage/Grapple 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Luck of Ciedrel roll for Mar 1d20 ⇒ 13
Luck of Ciedrel roll for Kal 1d20 ⇒ 6

The brave Kalthos goes down, and unfortunately nothing extraordinary happens.

The rest of the party now force marches down the road except for Seltyn from the starting blocks, who is moving and firing. Talon to go (Talon can 5' step on yellow).

And this will be round 1? So Mar, Ingwe, and Kalthos got dropped in the surprise round?

Male Elf Ranger 4

Whats happened to Elorin's action? Surely she could have done something? Moving us without our consent is not a good move, its our combat, we should decide what is happening to us.

Nah in all fairness it will be more bowing at frog 2.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

If arrow one kills frog 2, then arrow two would be aimed at frog 5.

I'm a little confused, too. Seltyn will missile frog 2, if it's still moving on his turn. If it's not, frog 5.

Hmm, best as I can tell we have half the party down very quickly, and are going to have a hell of a time getting them out of here without dying.

Marlamin at least is stable, which is a massive help. Ingwe is a worry, but at least her owner is still alive. I feel sorry for Kalthos, barely has he met us then he has been knocked out. Telethal has yet to be hit in any sense of the word which is great.

Somehow Talon also has escaped injury as of yet, despite having been right in the thick of combat with his bow of all things. I am hoping there is a feat or something that allows me to not provoke attacks of opportunity despite being in melee range with a bow cause it seems like one I should really take lol!

It might make sense to withdraw now, although doing that would almost certainly equate to sacrificing Marl and so on, which is something I do not want to do.

Well, if we can get your main melee guy actually in melee, we may be able to make some things happen here. I don't fancy leaving these guys to their demise.

Can we get an official update from Chainmail on what round we're in and who's up? Then we can move forward in a way that hopefully will salvage the situation.

That's my suggestion.

Also, Talon, I believe there's a feat in the APG that does that. Don't know that it's allowed for this game, though.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I think this game is pure Core Rulebook only. Might ask if I can do some kind of special training when we are back at base though that would allow me to take the feat. Basically work on adding more material on a case by case basis

Male Wood Elf Rogue 2

Ok, so if I'm managing to read these in the right order I THINK that the second damage roll in chainmail's last post was for me. Except that damage roll was done on a d20?
I'm MASSIVELY confused now :P If it was another grapple roll then i never took damage? haha chainmail, if you could give us a really clear status update as to how many hitpoints we've lost and if we're grappled or poisoned that'd be awesome because like some others, this is my first play by post and I'm having trouble understanding who's going when!! :P

Male Elf Ranger 4

Most of the attacks here from the frogs etc. have the issue that the animal gets a free grapple check from the tongue whenever they make an attack. However, it only gets the grapple check if the bite attack gets you. Hence why Talon avoided a potentially nasty moment where he could have been fighting off a grapple from the croc because the bite attack failed. Most likely the second roll against you Kalthos is the grapple roll that never fired because the normal attack didn't hit you. That's my best guess.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 2

right so I've likely taken 7 damage and am not grappled (not that it matters because i'm at -1 and dying. Got it now. thank you! 'ppreciate it)
stabilization rolls (for whenever you need them, and assuming they're not coup de grace-ing)

is this an ok way to do this? I'm really not sure how best to do it. I don't want to hold anything up
