DM Asmodeus
Welcome, and congratulations on making it to Phase Three of the recruiting process. It only gets harder from here.
I feel it is only fair play that since I have asked so many questions about you and your character that I tell you a little about me with my own Phase One questionnaire. lol
1. Your experience with the rules
Well I played D&D for the first time back in 1978 when I was 8 years old, it was introduced to me through my little league baseball coach. I actually DM'd my first module when I was 12. I have both played in and DM'd every edition from basic red box through 3.5. Ran some play test with 4th and quickly put it away. I run two long running real life groups that switched to Pathfinder about two years ago, my real life groups play every other weekend, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The Saturday group is currently entering the third book of Reign of Winter and my Sunday group is still in the first book of Mummy's Mask.
2. Your experience with PbP
As far as PbP goes I am relatively new to it, I have currently two groups playing Mummy's Mask here on Paizo and a group playing a 0 level adventure called Legends are Made, not Born. This will be my first serious attempt at a running an in depth, highly story driven PbP and that is why the long detailed recruitment process. I have heard so many stories of failed attempts because of player dropout and low quality postings or the DM flaking out. This is something I wanted to avoid in this campaign as I personally feel it would be harder to try to Plug-N-Play new characters into a story of this magnitude.
3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience
First and foremost I want story, RP and a lot of fun. The reason I asked for so much character detail is so that I can build the campaign world around the players. I expect quality post with both character actions and thoughts. I expect to learn more about each character as time progresses. I want to feel like I know this person, his/her quirks, what makes them tick, etc. I want a story that not only works but comes to life. So much so I also want it to be an enjoyable read so that people will want to follow the groups exploits even if they are not playing.
4. Philosophy as a PbP player
One of the things I have found in my relative new to GMing PbP is that nothing slows a game down or breaks immersion more than a game where you are always waiting for someone to post and they consistently miss days of posting that are suppose to be a minimum of 1/day. I think it breaks the group dynamic. I think it shows a lack of player interest and it leaves other players holding the bag. I understand perfectly well about real life, I run 3 internet businesses and a terrain building company so I know time can sometimes be limited. However, one post per day is just not that hard. If you can post in the OOC thread and give everyone the reason that you can not post today then you could have spent that time posting in the game thread. So my basic Philosophy is simple, always find the time to post in your game at least at the very minimum, and if you are going to post at the minimum rate then make sure it is a quality post. (i.e. I hate the player that makes a post that tells us nothing or does not lend to the game or character development. "John Doe sits at the campfire.")
5. Why you are running this game?
Because I really like how the AP is laid out, it seems to lend itself more to PbP than others, and I wanted to make the best attempt possible at recruiting the best players. It just so happens that this also seems to be one of the fewest AP's in PbP games and the one for some reason that the DM usually abandons. So we are going to break that cycle. At least the abandonment part.
6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP.
Thinking inside the head of your character, good writing skills, telling a cohesive story. A lot of players in both online and real life games have a tendency to play themselves despite how their character appears on paper. In these cases it doesn't matter if Tom plays a halfling rogue or a Elf Wizard they always have the same personality because they don't look at it from the characters point of view. These are also the players I find that constantly want to change characters or make up the newest thing to play without care for their old one. It is also the players I find are the most reckless in game because death means they get to make another character. Well got a little side tracked from the question here so back to it. Good Role-Playing starts with great character concept, background, mannerisms and all the little quirks that bring the character to life. Before you can role play a character properly you have to spend time yourself getting to know that character, learning about him/her and then you can bring him to life in the game. Hopefully that is what all these Phases and Questionnaires have done for everyone.
7. What is your experience with this adventure path?
This will be the first time I have run it so you all get to be my guinea pigs.
So lets talk about Phase Three shall we. Phase Three will be a in character roleplay event. You will be setup in a situation that will allow each of your characters to interact with each other. No stats will be used and no dice rolling will be needed or allowed. OOC comments should be kept to a minimum or put in the discussion thread as to not clutter the roleplay. During the event you will be given RP goals that each character needs to cover with the group, feel free to ask other characters questions about their past, etc to really get to know them and then ask more. During the event I will be grading writing and RP skills, every player will be asked to select his team at the end of the event. You can pick yourself plus five comrades from the pool of twelve. Please list them by importance to you, so you should be number one on your own list and then list the other five by value that you place them in. When you feel you have made this selection then you will PM that list to me in private. The list that everyone submits will be used as one score in determining the final 6.
Once everyone has made their list and choices then an event will happen in character, that will force everyone to make a choice of a sacrifice from the group of twelve. Effectively causing the character to be killed or die. (Eliminating them) Remember that we are villains and sometimes others have to pay the price for our actions. This choice should be the character that your character likes the least and thinks would be the weakest link if chosen.
I know it's a evil way to do it but hey it is what we all signed up for.
Once that is all done then the final 11 will be evaluated. 6 will make it, 2 will be chosen for alternates and 3 will be eliminated.
Any questions?
Etna Agnes
So let's see if I understand: 12 get selected. We get this RP goals (an example?) and we keep RPing. The we make a list and send it to you, listing our desired party composition. Then we all vote and one gets killed, probably the one that's liked less overall.
Then, basing yourself on the RP during phase three and our lists, you pick the last 6.
On the WotW being the less run here, I don't know. :/
It's third party, but WotW campaigns popped around like mushrooms when the last book got released: the fact that a lot of them died down, tough, is sadly true. :(
The APs that are less run are probably the 3.5 ones, with the exception of Curse (because it's awesome) and RotRL that got converted. The only ones that I actually never saw recruitment for were Council of Thieves (even if it's PF it's, well, Council of Thieves) and Shackled City (It's probably even longer than Kingmaker in PbP <.<) .
PS:Will the Phase Three RP be canon?
DM Asmodeus
Phase Three RP will be Cannon.....
The final selection will consist of scores from all phases of the application process. Phase 1 + Phase 2 + Phase 3 + Player Votes
This will come up with a final score tally and determine the final 6.
Here will be the RP goals that each character will need to cover at some point during the RP conversation:
“Reveal to the other characters what wicked deed made you a criminal?”
"Reveal to the other players all the juicy details of how you got caught?”
"Did you have help?”
Basically I want everyone to flesh out their crimes fully during the RP, the details of how they got caught and if they had any help. More of a hey we are all sentenced to death or at least life in the mines, we may as well brag to someone.
Of course you just can't come out and spill it in nice and neat form, this must be done over the course of the RP going back and forth in character.
The RP will take place in the capital city of Matharyn. In a courtroom where the group is shackled in a holding cell awaiting going before a judge for their crimes, and sentencing is being handed out, as the trial has happened already. Characters will get to talk amongst themselves in the cell as individual characters are called before the judge for sentencing.
I of course will play the judge. ....
DM Asmodeus
Yes, I prefer third person narratives, and first person speaking.
As an example:
He's suddenly brought back to his newfound Brothers when Ewan speaks. "Yes, go." he says to the half-elf, his voice deep and sure, spoken with confidence and certainty born of nobility. "You know more of what to do with maps than the rest of us. Gods luck be with you, and let us hope we're led somewhere interesting."
As the man goes off, Djehuti's eyes follow, but they are mostly concentrated on the priestesses. "A strange enough group," he muses aloud to his other companions. "But so is any who spends so much time with the dead. I wonder if it might be better if they were to come along with us, all these bands, just to ensure the dead's rest is disturbed for the right cause and by the right people. There are too many foreigners here."
Yes you need to go ahead and make an alias at this point.
Doctor Ottakar Wilken
Excellent. I look forward to flexing some writing muscles that have began to atrophy since the last PbP I was in died. Should we start making alliances for the immunity challenges now? *smirk*
Doctor Ottakar Wilken
Not to be presumptuous that I will be picked for the final party, but I am excited enough to want to do a little pre-planning of the character's build, pending your approval.
You mentioned in the recruitment thread the possibility of using the race-builder to tweak standard races up to 19 points. This intrigues me, as I was hoping to have a bit of his lupine nature show through even when he is not currently under the effects of his mutagen. Here is my submission:
Beast-Cursed Half-Elf
Type: Humanoid (0)
Subtypes: (Elf, Human, Shapechanger) (That last so that, should the werewolf hunter I hinted at in my background make an appearance, he'll be ready to kick my butt.) (0)
Size: Medium (0)
Speed: Normal (0)
Language: Linguist (Common, Elven, any others per Int) (1)
Ability Scores: Standard (+2 Strength, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma) (0)
Abilities:
Dual-Minded (1)
Elven Immunities (2)
Moon-Touched Damage Reduction (3)
Nocturnal (0)
Quick Reactions (2)
Silent Hunter (2)
Skill Bonus (Perception +2) (2)
Low-Light Vision (1)
Scent (4)
Weapon Familiarity (Sword Cane + War Razor) (1)
=0+0+0+0+1+0+1+2+3+0+2+2+2+1+4+1=19
So, similar to a normal half-elf with animal speed and senses, and minor lycanthropic DR (and the weapons because it's what all psuedo-Victorian gentlemen must use). If you feel any of this is unbalancing I will certainly remove it, but would really like to keep the Scent for cool RP reasons.
Also, in case it was not obvious, I am interested in this character eventually going into the Master Chymist prestige class. Would you be opposed to house-ruling that classes bomb progression as sneak attack progression, to go with the vivisectionist archetype?
Thank you for your time.
P.S. I assume the trait associated with the crime we were found guilty of counts as a campaign trait, and against the two trait total?
DM Asmodeus
** spoiler omitted **
From first appearances the race build looks solid. I will not be actually crunching the numbers just yet so if you are selected we will crunch them together.
On the second part:
I don't think it's a great idea because Chymst already gets bonus damage on melee attacks. I also don't think there are any existing classes or prestige classes with sneak attack damage and full BAB... I might be wrong there though. The two classes already have gobs of synergy and work fine in combination regardless. Adding sneak attack is just overkill.
According to Sean Reynolds, prestige classes do not advance alternate class abilities that are replaced by archetypes. In other words, Master Chymist does not advance Sneak Attack.
Jalik Daweri
Congratulations to all who have arrived and good luck. I think you have said this before just clarifying for all.
Final character sheets and all abilities/skills/feats will not need to be finalized until after Phase 3, correct?
AsmodeusUltima
|
No worries, just a house-rule that I had seen thrown around before. I don't have any interest in bombs, however, as they don't fit the concept, so maybe, should I be selected and survive to high enough level to start taking the class, you will allow another alternate bonus that you feel is less potentially unbalancing.
Etna Agnes
Just asking for an opinion: there are so much awesome submissions that my probabilities are getting slimmer by the day, and even if I get selected it won't be a problem until level 3 (when I have to pick
a feat).
AsmodeusUltima
|
Oh, okay. I would have been happy with a skill boost or something, but that works just fine with me. :)
Also think my last question got lost in the jumble: does the bonus from the crime we are guilty of count as a trait, hence using one of the two available? For that matter, are you allowing drawbacks from Ultimate Campaign/Quests and Campaigns? I am one of those players who likes to make sure the numbers on the sheet synergize well with the way I portray the character, so I like to know early what sort of options are available. Thank you!
Etna Agnes
@AsmodeusUltima: Yup and yup. I think DM Asmodeus wrote that somewhere, maybe in the character creation rules in the Campaign Info tab.

This is something that I will have to work on over time if you are selected. While a vampire is basically a +2 CR template the Phistophilus Devil is a CR 10 race alone.
We may have to work it out where she progresses toward her goal and starts gaining some of the abilities to show progression toward the goal but I doubt we will see anything close to a full Phistophilus Devil. Now we might could work something out as if you meet the requirements then around level 13 you could be transformed into one but you would lose all your class levels and just become the devil itself.
I am certainly open to other suggestions on this, it is just to high a CR to be a template.
Etna Agnes
Oh no, I agree that slapping the whole stat block of the thing is nuts (at will Dimension Door? That's a thing only Teleportation sub-school wizards can do :P).
I was thinking more of becoming fluff wise a Devil (skipping the 'trial period' as a Lemur and all), and get a very lite-version of the crunch.
The thing I'm really interested about is the Infernal Contract and Infernal Investment abilities (the one that grant wishes in particular, obviously banning the ability to grant it to party members): it's useless in combat, but it's a very powerful story tool. The Binding Contract ability would be cute, too: I won't do the damage a frontliner, but at least I could help clearing mooks. Maybe we could add some Stat or skill boosts.
I think that gradually adding things with a looong chain of feats is the best. Something like this (it's just an example at the top of my head):
1st Feat:+2 Racial Bonus to Bluff and Linguistics
2nd Feat:Infernal Contract, +2 INT
3rd Feat:Detect Toughts 1/day, +2 to Bluff and Linguistics
4th Feat:Binding Contract, +2 WIS
5th Feat:Infernal Investment, Type change to Outsider Native, +2 CHA

Here is the first requirement in the chain Etna. I have also left it where others can take this since you all will be signing a contract with a devil pretty quickly.
Contract Bound
A contract bound creature has made a bargain with a devil, promising a service and its soul in exchange for infernal power.
Requirements: Any Evil (A possessed creature radiates an evil aura as if it were an evil outsider.), Minimum Int, Wis, Cha scores of at least 3, Sign a contract of hell.
Boons:
Darkvision 60 feet and the see in darkness ability. Natural armor improves by +1 per 2 levels/Max 4, saving throws against poison improves by +1 per 2 levels/Max 4, resist fire 5 per 2 levels/Max 30, and fast healing 1 per 2 levels/Max 5.
Special Attacks: Starting at 5th level the creature gains the summon universal monster ability and can summon a devil once per day with a 100% chance of success. The devil remains for 1 hour. The creature's caster level or Hit Dice, whichever is higher, determines the most powerful kind of devil it can summon and the effective spell level of this ability, according to the following.
5th level - Lemure, 9th level - Bearded devil, 11th level - Erinyes, 13th level - Bone Devil, 15th level - Barbed devil, 17th level - Ice devil.
Spell Like Abilities: Starting at 5th level the creature gains the following spell-like abilities:
3/day—bestow curse, detect thoughts, locate creature
Ability Scores: At 5th level the creature gains +2 INT, +2 WIS, +2 CHA
Drawback:
Glowing eyes anytime the character turns angry or enters combat.
Contract Bound (Ex)
The creature has signed a contract of service to Armodeus either directly or through one of his devil's in return for this feat. The devil must reveal its nature as a creature of Hell when it offers a contract, and it can't hide the details of the contract in any way. The creature must enter the agreement willingly (without magical compulsion). Usually the creature must perform one or more tasks for the devil, and in exchange the creature gains the feat's abilities, whether immediately, after a specific amount of time, or once the tasks are completed. The contract always includes a clause that damns the creature's soul to Hell when the creature dies, with credit for the act and possession of the soul going to the devil signing the contract. When the creature dies, its soul is automatically imprisoned in a gem, which immediately appears in Hell as one of the devil's belongings. If the devil is dead when the creature dies, the creature's soul is destroyed, and can't be restored to life except by miracle or wish. If the creature fails to perform the tasks in the allotted time, its soul is still damned and the devil is not obligated to provide the promised abilities.
Many contracts state that the devil, its agents, and its allies will not attempt to kill the creature. This doesn't protect against all devils, but does offer the creature a measure of protection against treachery from the signatory devil.
Breaking a contract with a devil is difficult and dangerous. Furthermore, as long as the contract remains in effect, a slain victim can't be restored to life after death except by a miracle or wish. If the contract bound creature is restored to life, the devil immediately senses the name and location (as discern location) of the creature responsible.
This is still subject to tweaking.....
Etna Agnes
Wow, awesome. O.O
Even if the Drawbacks are harsh, I think that the Fast Healing is a little too good this early in the chain: as written, it will kick in already at level 2 (actually 3, because I can't take the feat before) and 1 HP per round that early is huuuuuge.
And we will be 'signing a contract with a devil pretty quickly'? Did we attract the attention of some of the big guys? D:
Hecate Reeve
Oh no, I agree that slapping the whole stat block of the thing is nuts (at will Dimension Door? That's a thing only Teleportation sub-school wizards can do :P).
*whistles innocently* Yeah, that sub school's pretty good, but I didn't write it, just exploiting it (Lawful Evil, yes?)...
In all seriousness I really wanted to like the Infernal Binder school (flavour-wise it's PERFECT for Hecate), but it is utter cr@p: +3 to a skill I already get +10 at first level and a limited number of opposed skill checks that don't last?! I'll pass, thanks. Sheesh.
Loving the mechanics you and the DM are coming up with, BTW

Ok , take a look at this feat chain...
Contract Bound Feat Chain
The Deal (1st Feat)
You have made a deal with Asmodeus himself and are infected with the blood of a devil. As you begin the transformation, your senses heighten and you become profoundly aware that every day, you are changing into something both more and less than mortal. You have only begun your transformation into a devil.
Prerequisites: You must have signed a contract with Asmodeus.
Benefits: You gain darkvision 60 ft. and the see in darkness ability, however you gain the Contract Bound weakness.
Contract Bound (Ex)
The PC has signed a contract of service in return for this feat. Asmodeus must reveal its nature as a creature of Hell when it offers a contract, and it can't hide the details of the contract in any way. The PC must enter the agreement willingly (without magical compulsion). Usually the PC must perform one or more tasks for Asmodeus, and in exchange the PC gains access to this feat and others that may require it. The contract always includes a clause that damns the creature's soul to Hell when the creature dies, with credit for the act and possession of the soul going to Asmodeus himself. When the creature dies, its soul is automatically imprisoned in a gem, which immediately appears in Hell as one of Asmodeus's belongings. If Asmodeus is dead when the PC dies, the PC's soul is destroyed, and can't be restored to life except by miracle or wish. If the PC fails to perform the tasks in the allotted time, its soul is still damned and Asmodeus is not obligated to provide the promised abilities.
Many contracts state that Asmodeus, his agents, and his allies will not attempt to kill the PC. This doesn't protect against all devils, but does offer the creature a measure of protection against treachery from Asmodeus himself.
Breaking a contract with Asmodeus is difficult and dangerous. Furthermore, as long as the contract remains in effect, a slain victim can't be restored to life after death except by a miracle or wish. If the contract bound PC is restored to life, Asmodeus immediately senses the name and location (as discern location) of the PC or creature responsible.
The Change (2nd Feat)
You are changing. You can feel it in very core of your being. Your mortal blood is failing and the devil's blood is overtaking you. Soon, you will transform fully into hells creation.
Prerequisites: The Deal, 5th level
Benefits: Your natural armor improves +2, you gain a +2 racial bonus to saves versus Poison and you gain fire resistance 5. Your eyes now glow anytime you are upset or angry, your skin takes on a reddish hue and you begin to grow horns and a tail. Further, you radiate an evil aura as if you were an evil outsider. Holy Water now harms you and you are susceptible to all other attacks that would normally harm an evil outsider.
The Transformed (3rd Feat)
Your Devil blood has taken hold of you and has overtaken your racial blood. You are now a devil. However, you are still unsure of your powers and only begun to understand the full repercussions of this dark gift. Still, you are full of fury.
Prerequisites: The Deal, The Change, 5th level
Benefits: You gain the spell like ability 3/day—bestow curse, detect thoughts, locate creature, alter self. Your Cha score is improved by +2. You are now an outsider (devil, evil, extraplanar, lawful). You gain resistance to fire 30.
The Learned (4th Feat)
You have been a devil long enough that you are beginning to be able to control your powers.
Prerequisites: The Deal, The Change, The Transformed, 7th level
Benefits: Your Natural Armor bonus is increased to +4. You gain a +4 (formerly +2) racial bonus to saves versus Poison and regeneration 5 (good spells, good weapons).
Special Attack: You gain the summon universal monster ability and can summon a devil once per day with a 100% chance of success. The devil remains for 1 hour. The PC's caster level or Hit Dice, whichever is higher, determines the most powerful kind of devil it can summon and the effective spell level of this ability, according to the following.
5th level - Lemure, 9th level - Bearded devil, 11th level - Erinyes, 13th level - Bone Devil, 15th level - Barbed devil, 17th level - Ice devil.
Contract Devil, lesser (5th Feat)
You have mastered your condition and are now a lesser contract devil in every sense. You are allowed to seek out and make contracts of your own.
Prerequisites: The Deal, The Change, The Transformed, The Learned, 9th level
Benefits: Infernal Contract (Su)
As a full-round action, a contract devil can produce an infernal contract for a single living mortal creature. This contract can grant a wide range of abilities and effects, as detailed on the following page. To receive any of these bonuses, however, the mortal must sign its true name to the document of its own free will. Upon doing so, that mortal's soul is sworn to the contract devil, condemning the soul to an eternity of servitude in Hell rather than whatever fate would naturally befall it upon the mortal's death. Breaking a contract with a contract devil is difficult and dangerous; as long as the infernal contract remains in effect, the victim cannot be restored to life after death save by a miracle or a wish. If a mortal is restored to life in this way, the contract devil immediately senses the development—it not only knows which soul has been restored to life, but also gains the benefits of a discern location spell targeted on the character or creature that restored the damned soul to life.
Evil Wishes: Upon signing this contract, a mortal is granted one wish, as per the spell. (The wish also has to be approved by Armodeus himself for the wish to be granted.) It must use this wish within 24 hours of signing the contract—if it does not, the wish is wasted but it remains bound to the contract nevertheless. While the mortal chooses the intention of the wish, the lesser contract devil decides upon the specifics, allowing for its own diabolical interpretation of the results should the mortal imprecisely phrase a wish.

Sweet series of feats for the devil lovers. Will be interesting seeing how many choose this alternative and how it plays out.
Have my background about 1/2 written. Spent the last two days outside with family, so pretty exhausted and not getting much accomplished toward finishing the background. Should have it by tomorrow night I would hope.

I think the feat chain is on par with the vampire and lich feat chain in the WotW and I think it fits our Barrister's perfectly.
You definitely don't want to die under that tree, if you get attached to your character at all since their is basically no coming back. Bet those that take it will make sure they keep two anti-hero points in their pocket for emergencies once they get them. :)

Here's start date information for the campaign, I have updated the campaign information tab.
Date: Oathday, Erastus 24th,(Summer) 4714
Year 16 in the reign of King Markadian V called the Brave (Day Zero):
The PCs are brought in chains to Branderscar Prison.
They have no realistic hope of escape and in three days will face just punishment for a crime they did commit.

It seems that if I get selected, I'll have to invest some ranks in Disguise (That I now remember is CHA based: wooohooo!)| Etna Agnes |
@GM Asmodeus: I'll still grab an Hat of Disguise just to be sure. You never know.
And Etna only gets real mad if someone insults her father.
Obviously, that could change if she realizes that feeling attachment to someone is not a weakness (and not an obstacle to villainy!)...
That's obviously not what I'm planning. Absolutely not. ;)
@Hecate: Look at the bright side: it can't get worse than what it currently is. :P

@ Darkness Rising
Nope, not going to rewrite RAW. Especially at this stage of the game. I am not trying or wanting to change the core of the game, the feat chain was a easy snap on but if we start down this road then everyone will want something changed for their character. Just too much to keep up with.

Oh, and building an actual character sheet now (can you tell I am excited about this game?), so here are rolls for stats:
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Melphael, The Pale Elf
Hey, hey, hey! Here I am! Oh boy, this is exciting!
1. The website looks fantastic, and if I am selected you can use the backstory I provided. Judging by the extra stuff such as: In play, Interactions, Apperance, and Goals. I might have to add more detail to those following things.
2. That Contract Devil chain looks very risky, but great risk offers great reward. I'll put that down as a possibility for me.
3. I'm so prepped for Phase Three RP! Let me know when and where to go!
I feel like an excited puppy right now! I'm like a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just… do things ...
Anyway, good luck everybody!
DM Asmodeus
Not everyone's page will look the same, I used the (In Play, Interactions, etc.) because that is what she provided as sections on her alias in spoiler tags. I will use what you offer on your final character sheet. I did not add stats because they change so frequently, they are better left here. I am really only hoping to have to update the website right before each act.
