Dark Sun ala Fabian - To Save a Dying World (Inactive)

Game Master Fabian Benavente

Dark Sun played with Pathfinder Rules (and a healthy dose of house rules) focused on the on-going story of an unlikely group of heroes called to destiny.

Yep, mul wizard. My thought was that the 'Benefactor' would secretly be his father, but as that may or may not work with what you have planned (don't even know if the 'Benefactor' is human), he could just as easily be a preserver associate.

I would probably have the benefactor be somehow related to his real father. What happened to his father? Was he an off-spring of love or of violence?

Since we're in FY2 and Kalak died in FY0, then he's only been on his own for a couple of years. Must have been some pretty intensive two years to have accumulated so much knowledge (5th level PC). Where/how did he hone his preserving skills?

Any other contacts in Tyr?

I was thinking the slave-culling started happening over several years before he was deposed, so he's spent a good 5 or so years in Altaruk learning from the preserver cell. As for his parent's relationship, I'm not sure. Certainly Kax himself knows nothing about the details.

Contacts in Tyr... He would have tried to make contact with the preservers there when he returned, Sadira's crew. He'd also possibly meet with his former owner (who sided with Tithian), though I don't know if we'd call him a contact.

Ha welcome Cronax!
Looking forward to play with you!
Seems like this is a group of pure Dark Sun fans and nearly everyone GMs, and two run other Dark Sun campaigns!

Fabian i thought you had seen Cronax stuff before...
Cronax campaign is actually the campaign where i planned to play the telepath psion. We now have an oracle, a wizard, a slayer, and a psychic warrior. I´m still a bit undecided between the psion and the halfling raider. Of course the psions adds a lot of social skills and psionic power. The halfling adds an animal companion, more martial power and some more magics as well as potential summons.

Could i make the halfling part of uriks halfling special forces? Or on the way to join there? Or would that be too complicated for the story? Maybe he was expelled because he did something bad or just couldn´t bring up the discipline.

No, I didn't know about Cronax campaign or his documents; it would have saved a lot of confusion but all's good now.

You forgot about the half-elf druid.

So we have:
human slayer (almost done);
elf oracle (almost done);
half-elf druid (advanced);
human psion or halfling raider (concepts and little more so far); and
dwarf psychic warrior (concept only).

Since I gave you all my word, as long as you submit a decent PC then those five will start.

If there's someone 'not quite there', then I'll open it up to other players. I've told this to Cronax so he knows what the 'situation' is.

With regards to your potential halfling raider, I would be Ok if he was part of uriks halfling special forces and had either deserted or never made it there.

Other questions?

Yes.

1. I think we could do with a sixth person. Normaly someone is lost on the way or cannot post sometime. Also Cronax is quite experienced and could surely add a lot in the fluff departement.
2. Is there a link for Terrors of Athas?
3. Is or was there a book on Athas halflings, besides the obvious info? Only have Elves of Athas.

I would rather start with five 'very involved' PCs. If something happens along the way, then I would seek a replacement.

The Terrors of Athas can be obtained from Athas.org.

There is no halfling book for 'normal' Athasian halfling; there's one for 'windriders of the jagged cliffs' but these halflings are not those.

Male? I'm actually a half-turtle. Antipaladin 8/Paladin 12

I'm confused; do we have 5 or 6 now?

Hi Cronax :)

Mh to bad about the halving book.
Had really only one elf on my radar...

It would be very convenient to dot gameplay.

Male Human Slayer 4/Rogue (Thug) 1 | HP 40/40 | AC 20, Tch 13, FF 18 | CMD 22 | Fort +6, Ref +9, Will +4 | Init +4 | Perception +10 | Intimidate +14

While I have a minute, any suggestions on how Valsavis could get away with wearing light armor while maintaining his AC? I really hate the reduced movement of medium armor, especially since I'll be trying to flank as much as possible. On the other hand, I guess it won't really matter once I am in combat and using 5' steps to flank. Hmm, thoughts?

male

@That other Guy: We have 6 interested players and only 5 spots.

@Hayato: I opened up the gameplay thread with 'nothing'. Please post and then delete your post. It will show up in your campaign tab and we can leave this thread only to post turn recaps.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'elf on my radar'.

@Valsavis: get rid of your cloak and get a +1 chainshirt and you're almost there. Medium armor will hurt your 'survival and movement' rates anyway.

Male? I'm actually a half-turtle. Antipaladin 8/Paladin 12

I think I have too much on my plate. This sounded cool, but I think you guys have got a good synergy going on, and I've got some good games I'm in currently, so for now I will bow out and wish the 5 of you good luck. I'll keep everything I have for Reaubalt on tab though, so if things get jarbled in the future and you need another player I could potentially fill that slot.

I like your style, Fabian. We need more GM's to set high bars in PbP and just Rpg's in general, never change that about yourself. I'm sure that your stories will be great.

Peace.

Unless KK dots in we're back down to four.

I liked where you were headed with your druid, it's too bad we won't be able to see him in action.

Yes liked the druid a lot too, simply confused the two elves into one las night.

Male? I'm actually a half-turtle. Antipaladin 8/Paladin 12

Idk. If you Need another guy I could do it bc it's a slow campaign style. Thanks though, this build is pretty interesting to me too.

Slow campaigns can go faster than thought. Focusing on the story and advancing it meaningful make for big progress.

@That Other Guy: Sorry to see go but I understand about time commitments and such.

@Everyone else:

Yes, we currently have 5 PCs in different stages of development; which is all I want. I'm going to give KK the rest of the day to check in. If he doesn't then we're down to four and I will open up the slot for 'competitive submittals'. What I mean by that is that I will accept submissions from different people for that one spot and then select the best one.

Our best bet is for the two DMs that have current DS games to tap their players to see if anyone would be interested in applying/joining. Other potential players will also be considered.

So we 'may' do this tomorrow, unless KK checks in.

Selection criteria will be as follows:
---------
I am looking for "roleplayers" whose posts are NOT a one sentence reply. All players are expected to write two to three paragraphs per turn recap within 48 hours after the recap is issued (so about four to six paragraphs per week) so if you can't meet that schedule please do not bother applying to the game.

If this sounds like a game for you, then post a character with the following sections: a) appearance, b) background (with NPC hooks), c) personality, and d) portrait or picture. Please make the characters interesting, the strong and silent types just don't cut it in this type of game.
------------

Which brings me to my other question. Anyone found a really cool pic for their PC?

Game on!

OK, now that you're in, let's put some flesh on those bones for this PC. :)

Ok, I'm good with slave culling over a few years so 5-6 years in Altaruk makes sense. Give me someone for the Veiled Alliance who taught/took him in him? It can't be the benefactor because he's all over Athas, never staying in one spot for long.

Also please give me something on his former slave owner. Is he bitter at the lost of his slaves? Is he hunting them down? You said he was a templar. What sort of holdings did/does he have, if any?

Game on!

Thank you for the compliments. I hope you took your time to read a couple of turns of the Mummy's Mask game and are making an 'informed' decision.

Well, I do try to host a decent game but they're not for everyone. Like anything in life, you get out of it what you put into it. And I meant what I said about shared world building so you guys have to be ready when I ask you to set a scene (2-3) paragraphs. I'll say something like: 'you all slow down for the night and camp; somebody relate a story about their past'.

I already wrote about the speed of the game on the recruitment thread so I won't repeat myself here. Once we start playing, you guys will be the judge of speed and style and determine if this game is to your liking. And trust me when I say that plenty of people are very happy just posting 'one sentence posts' and this is fine too, just different.

What make me want to host these games is to read a developing story where I set the stage and you guys act.

OK, with that being said, I also don't want to lose momentum here so how about we start next weekend instead of February 7?

Can you guys finish fluff and crunch in the next 7 days? I'm more interested in the fluff as we can 'fix up the crunch' as the game starts.

Game on!

So for crunch, how do you feel about Arithmancy and Sacred Geometry Fabian?

Does anyone actually allow those feats or is it just a running joke on the boards?

I allow them in my games. In actual play, they aren't nearly as useful as people think.

male
Cronax wrote:

I had never heard of them before until now.

They sound like too much work and random. Random usually means that smart players will abuse these things. There's probably a list out there somewhere that tells you which spells (based on spelling) benefit from these feats. Since I don't want to focus on crunch too much, I would say no; let's just stick to the basics.

Game on!

I allow them too and play them. But like everything else, depends on the player a bit.

So if anyone wonders, I dot-deleted gameplay, but since then I can't use my other alias here for some reasons I don't know.

I'm traveling on a family event this weekend. I can get a character with back story going this week but would be more comfortable having some more time reading up on certain sources of Athas. Especially for the halfling and the play style we want to do here. I want to think through personality much more to have a better experience.

Well, it's time to open this up to see if we can fill that last spot.

@DM Under a Dark Sun and Cronax:

Please post a brief request for players in your discussion threads and send people to the post below (or however you think it's best).

Thanks!

male

A spot is open for a PC in a Dark Sun game. Current players are:

male human slayer;
female elf flame oracle;
male mul preserver; and
male halfling hunter.

We're looking to start on January 31. The DM's pitch is as follows:

I am looking for "roleplayers" whose posts are NOT a one sentence reply. All players are expected to write two to three paragraphs per turn recap within 48 hours after the recap is issued (so about four to six paragraphs per week) so if you can't meet that schedule please do not bother applying to the game.

Please post see the campaign tab for additional information (character generation, etc.)

Questions?

Game on!

Fabian I'm actually HayatoKen. I'm traveling and using wayfinder to post from my smartphone, but since I dotted gameplay i can't post with that alias. Seems to be a bug.

-Posted with Wayfinder

Jan. 31 works for me. I'll get background firmed up in the next day or two and get it all posted into the alias and character sheet for the DM. I'll also pass the word to the players in my campaign.

male

@Hayato: Hopefully things will get back to normal when you post from your computer. let me know if there's anything that I need to do on my end.

@DM Under a Dark Sun: Thank you, sir. I look forward to your finished product and maybe one of your players will be interested as well.

Male Mul Wizard (Enhancement) 5

Here's is a draft of the stats (Cronax). Still figuring out the gear and will probably add more to the background as inspiration permits.

Are we still doing 20 point buy or did that change to 25?

DM Under a Dark Sun wrote:

20 point buy, why is 25 anywhere?

If so, let me know and I'll correct it.

Seems to be a pure wayfinder issue. No action from you needed, but thanks.

I mentioned 25 point buy and Cronax campaign uses it too, but Fabian here decided on a 20 pont buy.

I wouldn't mind extending out our start date a bit more since we still have to fill a spot and discuss possible character background cohesion.

In terms of NPCs for our background did you want a mix of past and present? I only ask because present might be an issue for me since I am freshly arrived to Urik. But I'm sure I can come up with something.

Also, I am very much looking forward to the concept behind how you plan on ensuring it becomes one story about five characters as opposed to five stories about one character.

Hey Cronax, can you please fill out the character sheet per my request here?

Once I have that, I'll take a closer look and let you know if I have any comments.

Thanks!

Ok, I can wait until February 7th but only if you guys keep up the posting with regards to background and other game related stuff. If I see interest dying down then I'll jump start the game! :)

NPCs can be a mix of past and present. I would rather you NOT be in Urik in your present. I'll start the game by having each of you receive a 'summons' (whatever form that takes for each of you). I'll then ask you to tell us what you were doing when you received the summons and your trip to Urik. Once you are all in Urik, then we'll start the game 'together'.

So I would prefer that you were scattered all over the Tyr region so that I can read about more interesting trips. :)

Like all good epic stories, this will be about a quest with a definite goal. The goal will be more than just explore dungeon, kill monsters, get loot. Think Lord of the Rings! (don't I wish). :)

Game on!

I just got tangled up on the point buy reading the old recruitment thread.

Feb. 7 it is. I'll get cracking on background revisions this week. Spent the evening working up stat blocks for my own game and I'm tapped out.

Alrighty, I'll be working on my background all week. This character sheet is a PITA, haha. My pretty doctored up hero lab profile is going to waste!

Since the human entry is completely blank, am I dropping my psionic talent and wild talent feats?

It actually helps me out quite a bit when I have everyone's stats in the same place so yeah, you can complaint, but please fill it out. :)

You guys are confusing me about the psionic talent and wild talent feat. :)

As per the character generation rules, all PCs get to pick a 'psionic talent' powered by your psionic focus...

So I guess you don't get the wild talent feat (whatever that giave you) but you do get to pick a psionic talent.

Is this better?

Game on!

That is what it says in the original house-rules.pdf document under the racial details for human. So we are fully onto the new Cronax documents and are completely ignoring the original house rule document. Gotcha.

Yes, this has been quite confusing for char gen, but it's to be expected when conversions and such are involved. No worries. And I was just kidding about the character sheet! I'm already well into filling it out, haha.

Fabian, i think in order to have a psionic focus, you need the wild talent feat. I´ll take a look at it again later.

male
Hayato Ken wrote:

I don't think so. I just checked under psionic focus and it states:

"If you have a power point pool or the ability to manifest psi-like abilities, you can meditate to become psionically focused."

So you all have the ability to manifest psi-like abilities by virtue of the psionic talent so no need for additional wild talent feat.

Game on!

I see. Was wrong about that.
So, the normal way to do this would be to give the wild talent feat and a talent. We only receive the talent though and no power points right?

Right now i´m in an Iron Gods game and despite really enjoying the story and my character, i´m not having a real good time there because of two other players that both want immense solo time and spotlight focus, in my opinion on the cost of the game and rest of the group.

I´m actually considering dropping this game, even though it´s perhaps my only chance to play it before gming it myself.
In all of my own games, i´ll set the tone much higher and call things like that out in the future.

Having a fun cooperative game is pretty important to me. More important than insisting on something or playing out my character to the last. So i too hope this will not be a story about 5 characters telling a solo story^^

male

Yes, you all get psionic talent and no power points.

Hayato Ken wrote:

There will of course be certain situations when some characters will shine over others (i.e., more martial characters will probably play a more preponderant role in combat situations).

However, by providing more than just combat, I'm hoping to get more of you in the spotlight. If at any time you feel your PC is left out then raise your hand. Again, the goal here is to weave a story together that is fun for everyone involved.

This is one of the reasons that I don't like characters that are too optimized because they tend to be focused (usually on combat) on one thing in detriment of the rest. I like characters who can juggle and can carve bones and can dance.

Comments?

It seems like everyone is on the same page here. The fact that most or all of us have DMed on the boards here hopefully will help - we've all dealt with prima donnas, as well as the one-line posters, and can use that to guide us toward the magical middle path of proper posting.

Yeah, that surely helps a lot! That´s why i pointed out that nearly everyone is a GM^^

On a sidenote, someone just posted this..."XY being a dick I can RP"...

That´s the point where i want to say, i´m a real fan of the discussion thread (in this case the ooc function then) and pms. Anytime you feel i´m doing something weird or not getting something, tell me please.

Just an update: I've got about 800 words written for Valsavis' background so far, but am still very much in the thick of things. I'm currently in the process of fleshing out the details of the attack and the circumstances in which the old preserver found him.

Hey Fabian,

Apologies for not staying up to date with the thread. It is probably best that I withdraw from the game as I probably won't be able to give your game the dedication it deserves and needs.

Have fun all and apologies again.
