Dark Sun ala Fabian - To Save a Dying World (Inactive)

Game Master Fabian Benavente

Dark Sun played with Pathfinder Rules (and a healthy dose of house rules) focused on the on-going story of an unlikely group of heroes called to destiny.

Plan was to take a 5 feet step back behind Valsavis, so im out of reach? and have cover to avoid AoO´s. Else i need to manifest defensively. The power targets up to 5 different targets individually, but requires a save, it´s no area effect. Description is linked in my profile.
Fireball would be elemental ball, an area effect.

Gbaji blinked in surprise, but his feet were already moving. He'd been in combat many times before and his training immediately kicked in - stay mobile, keep the enemy on the back foot. He ran forward at the nearest half-giant, his charge turning into a flying kick.

Round 1
If he can, terrain permitting, charge the lead half-giant and hit him with an unarmed strike
1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 10 + 2 = 23 to hit, damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (1, 4) + 5 = 10
Reduce the attack roll by 2 if the terrain is difficult

Gbaji roared (silently), the excitement of the battle sending his blood pumping. Strange ceremonies were beyond his ken. Fighting - now, this was something he really did know about! He punched the half-giant before him with fists like rocks, aiming for the face - one, two! Then he danced back, light on his feet.

Round 2
Full attack action on the same half-giant, making use of Brawler's Flurry to attack with Two-Weapon Fighting.
Punch 1: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 10 - 2 = 17 to hit, damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (6, 2) + 5 = 13
Punch 2: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 10 - 2 = 18 to hit, damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (1, 3) + 5 = 9
Then a 5' step backwards, trying to avoid being surrounded and flanked if possible.

Barega, given how I interpret the soften earth and stone, please let me know if this is your preferred course of action for round 1.

OK, so, in other words, it won't really slow them down much? Then I guess how about: Round 1, cast obscuring mist. I think it's 20' radius and so it won't (so far) obscure any of the bad guys, good guys can hide in it if they want to. And I think it should provide some protection to Korgunard.

Then round 2, start casting a summon ... goal is to pick something that is a good grappler and put it right next to the templar (or, where I think the templar is -- say, square N8. A "Kludz" looks like it would fit the bill... (burn stone shape for SNA3 for a kludz)

Barega, still addled from the effects of the 'ceremony', stared in shock at Korgunard and then at the approaching half-giants. With agonizing slowness, he realized what was happening and began to react...

He gestured and made a whistling noise, and a wind from nowhere began to pick up. The wind blew a thick vapor out of the fountain and toward the halfling, enveloping him. Soon he and the area around him were lost to sight. From somewhere within the cloud, the whistling changed to a strange serpentine chanting...

I think if you sort of wiggle your mouse on it, there's a transparent black bar that appears at the top, with among other things a magnifying glass... if you hit the magnifying glass there's a slider, you can zoom it in using that.

Silence!? Trying to screw me right out of the gate, eh? Hah. Also of note, considering the fact that we don’t know our initiative order, keep in mind that Valsavis will always try to flank his opponents, so factor that into the outcomes of my posted actions. Lastly, if Valsavis ever brings his opponent below 0 HPs, he gets a free demoralize action at +4 to all opponents within 30’ with LOS (which probably won’t apply to this fight unless the silence wears off).

Round 1

Valsavis grunts as the tranquility of the ceremony abruptly ends. He realizes something is amiss when he is unable to hear his own curse. He tries to warn the others that something is effecting his hearing, but they seem to not be able to hear him, either.

Valsavis quickly turns his mind to the task at hand. Seeing Gbaji go flying into the first half-giant, Valsavis will make his way towards the huge brute in front, drawing his weapons as he does so, attacking from the east.

Attacking from the east in order to flank the half-giant with the help of Gbaji next round.
mwk obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Crit?: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 15 total damage

Valsavis plunges the blade of his father deep into the half-giants thigh. He grins as blood gushes over his hand from the deep wound.

Round 2

Stepping up to flank the brute, Valsavis will bring the full fury of his attacks to bear on the towering goliath.

Assuming the half-giant will advance into melee with Gbaji, Valsavis will attempt to flank with a 5’ step, full-attacking.
mwk obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 +Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7
obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 +Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
Crit?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 21 total damage

With Valsavis' fury raging, he slashes his off-hand bard's friend deeply across the brutes back, spilling a curtain of blood down his back, while leaving a heavy flap of flesh sagging in his wake.

Edit: I forgot to factor in the +2 from flanking for my second round attacks, but the outcome would've been the same regardless.

Ah, here's my 'good problem' again. You all posted in 12 hours what you have time to do in 48 hours.

I wasn't going to recap until tomorrow night but it's 'cold' here in South Carolina so I think my evening just freed up.

I'll recap tonight.

Game on!

Yes, it was quite refreshing to not have to post a bunch of introspective brooding and just relish in the desire to kill.

Agreed, we were due for a little action. To be honest, I tried hard to think of another 'fight' (little?) but with Urik being what it is, the only fight in which templars would not be involved would be outside of the city gates.

Anyway, I'm glad Valsavis could contain himself and not start a rift in the group. I told you I would give him a focus for his anger.

Just looking at the numbers you guys posted, I'm not sure I did a good job here. This encounter is supposed to be 'challenging'... I'll roll for NPCs tonight and see where this goes. Lots of times initiatives play a big role in these encounters.

Oh wait, did I hear more soldiers coming down the tunnel?

Oh, that's right, you guys can't hear anything. :)

Game on!

Is there a reason you don´t roll initiative before?

No, not really, just the fact that I sit down and roll everything at once. And remember that my background (PBEM) is that people didn't roll anything at all. However, if that makes a difference, I'll look at the character sheets and roll those later this morning.

Didn´t have the time to read that whole guide yet, there was too much to catch up here^^ Will read it though and give you my opinion. I´m currently writing something similar, but more on playing Pathfinder Society and the differences between roll- and rolegaming, more tactical and strategic play and storyteller approach. Mainly to help bring together a locally split playerbase.

Ok, as requested, below are the initiative rolls.

Initiatives:

Ala'a init: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 4 = 13
Barega init: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 4 = 13
Gbaji init: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 1 - 2 = 16
Lalali init: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 5 - 4 = 3
Valsavis init: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 - 4 = 11

Templar init: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Halfling init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Half-giants init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Yeah, let me know.

Remember that it was written for play by email games but I think is very applicable to a play by post with turn recaps like we're playing here.

Round 3...

The serpentine chanting from the the mist finally stopped. A great frilled snake-like creature burst up through the dirt floor in the corner near the entranceway corridor N-M,8-9. It's forked tongue tasted the air briefly, and then it moved with surprising speed toward Hamanu's templar I guess to K-L,8,9. It darted in and attempted to bite onto the cloaked man's leg, but he stepped aside with contemptous ease, and the beast missed its mark.
Kluzd charge vs the templar's AC 18: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Barega finished his chanting, and heard the Kluzd emerge. He silently willed it to find and crush Hamanu's man to death.

He panted heavily from the pain of the wicked gash the halfling's axe had left, and took a moment to collect himself, listening. He heard the sound of combat, and of many large corpses hitting the floor. He heard the elf-girl shouting something unintelligible, a mass of sizzling and craclking noises -- but at least it meant she was still alive. From nearby in the mist, he heard Eliantha call out, "Someone help Korgunard!"

Barega recalled that Korgunard had fallen around on the other side of this fountain. He made his way there, moving quickly through the mist (to D5, i think blind-fight lets you avoid the half-speed penalty). He saw the strange man lying, apparenty unconcious. He knelt, and laid his hand on Korgunard's chest. He felt some life there still. He concentrated briefly and uttered a few words, and felt new wind inflate the old man's chest.
cure light wounds on Korgunard: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
I think I am close enough to Eliantha that she can see this happening.

Round 4...

Do you want to just run the Kluzd for me? I want it to grapple the templar, either by initiating a grapple or by charging, hitting with its bite, and grabbing. I am looking at the "Terrors of Athas" thing, but grapple is significantly different between 3rd ed and pathfinder, I don't really know what the details will be there -- if you can run it that would be great.

Barega turned to Eliantha, "Is there another way out of here? Beyond the curtain?"
As he spoke, he fetched a healing fruit from his pack and began feeding it to Korgunard's slowly stirring form, while applying pressure to his axe-wound with his other hand.

I am thinking that if there is another way out, we can head there while we leave the snake thing and maybe a fog cloud, or maybe I can obstruct / partially-cave-in the narrow tunnel with soften earth and stone, and we can run away while the reinforcements are trying to get through that.

Fabian wrote:

I think combat makes people post faster. I can almost hear the old ToEE video game combat music. (You know, the one that kind of sounds like the "Daily Double".)

Round 3

Gbaji felt the blood squelching under his armour. He hoped he wasn't hurt too badly - damn, but that half-giant had hit him hard! - but he still seemed able to fight and there was a deadly enemy to deal with. Hamanu might want Gbaji alive, but Gbaji didn't intend to offer the same courtesy to his minions. He ran straight at the templar as the man raised the whistle to his lips.

Declaring this an attempt at a knockout. If I hit him and deal damage with the next attack, he needs to make a DC 16 Fort save or drop unconscious for 1d6 rounds.
Charging the templar 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 10 + 2 = 32 to hit, damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (5, 1) + 5 = 11

Round 4

If the templar is unconscious, Gbaji will perform a coup de grace assuming that doesn't put Gbaji in danger from AoOs from mysterious others summoned by the whistle. Otherwise...

Gbaji punched again at the templar, trying to batter him down.

Move action to gain the benefit of Weapon Focus (Unarmed Strike) for 1 minute using Martial Flexibility, standard action to hit him
1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 10 + 1 = 19 to hit, damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 1) + 5 = 8

EDIT: Oo! Oo! Critical on the attack in Round 3, rolling to confirm.
1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 + 2 = 24 to confirm, extra damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 2) + 5 = 9

Yes, I agree. The encounter was 'challenging'.

And I did post his actions for Round 3. He blew this 'silent' whistle.

Other questions?

BTW, Barega, I haven't ignored your question but I figured that rounds 3 and 4 would take care of the templar. As cocky as he is, he will not stand up to two rounds of 5 PCs.

If Lalali gets killed i put dips on a halfling cannibal barbarian! Took me some time to understand this turn^^ Of course when i don´t have time to buff i´m game, especially with the psionic body debuff :D

Ala'a kicked the halfling's body out of the way and spun toward the rest of the group. The half-giant soldiers were all dead, strewn about Gbaji and Valsavis in pools of blood. Both men had suffered deep wounds, but Ala'a had to admire their fortitude. They know how to kill.

She watched as the half-giant launched himself at the templar and heard the others calling for help for Korgunard. But she didn't like the smug look on the templar's face as he blew on that silent whistle.

"Kellakris kar haddrik!" she yelled, waving her arms toward the rear of the room. Get the wizard and get the hell out of here.

Leaving the templar to the others, she ran to the narrow tunnel they'd used to enter the chamber. Feet tracing a delicate pattern on the floor, she called on the flickering flame to protect her, then breathed a second spell that filled the air around her with thick smoke.

Round 3: Move to N8 and cast shield of faith on self. Positioning myself to try to get an attack of opportunity on anyone coming from the south hall, while giving myself cover from the wall corner.

Round 4: Cast obscuring mist, which I can see through due to my gaze of flames ability.

Contingency: If anyone drops to negative hit points, Ala'a will move to them (Acrobatics +9 to avoid movement-related AoO, oncentraion +8 to cast defensively) and cast cure moderate wounds. If Gbaji, the kluzd and Valsavis are having trouble with the templar, she'll move in to help, trying to set up a flank. +11 to hit, 1d8+6 damage (18-20 crit range).

Does Lalali know if the psionic whistle had any purpose other than a signal of some sort? With her knowledge would it be safe to assume we should expect reinforcements?

Just heard it so far, rolled spellcraft to identify it if i can, need to wait on Fabians input.

Ala´a obscuring mist will shut line of sight down, what i need for most powers...

male

@Lalali: The whistle is supposed to be used as a signal. They are usually tuned such that only certain people hear it but for some reason you also heard it. It's safe to assume that someone close by has heard the whistle and can pinpoint the location of where the whistle was blown.

Feel free to relate as much or as little of this to your companions.

@lalali: what was difficult to understand? Let me know and maybe I can help you. Also, since you didn't give me an action for round 2, I only had you 'step back'.

Buff or no buff was your decision. These things happen, right?

Stop complaining and thinking about a new PC. Concentrate on Lalali. The poor girl just got her butt handed to her by some 'big boys'. :)

Slight tweak to Ala'a's Round 4 action: I'll ready an action to cast obscuring mist but hold off until/unless I hear someone coming down the southern passage. That way I won't interfere with the smack-down on the templar but can still try to cover the others' retreat.

Hey that´s just fun! Could i do intertial armor up for round 2 for 1PP?

Obviously concentrating on something, Lalali only stuttered:

No, but you could do it for round 3 if you want.

I would NOT consider it metagaming if Lalali saw that Gbaji, Valsavis, and Ala'a currently have no opponents and just 'let them' take care of the templar. That's not counting Barega's kludzu but she couldn't know that.

Up to you, just let me know.

Hey, these should be 'frantic IC questions...' :)

I was asking since Lalali had expressed difficulty in posting recently and I wanted any information I could garner for Valsavis (assuming Lalali would warn the group when she had said information) before writing up my post.

Round 3

Even with the calls of distress regarding Korgunard, Valsavis was caught in the throes of his bloodlust. With a snarl and a shake of his head--the blow from the templar had rattled his skull and caused him to momentarily black out--he turned to the smug-faced templar, "Yes, we go, but you die here and now!" before advancing on the man, blood dripping from his blades--that of his enemies as well as his own running down his arms from his numerous wounds.

Attempting to flank if possible with Gbaji.
mwk obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 +2 if flanking
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

If unable to flank, Unfortunately, his wounds cause him to stagger as he goes for the kill, causing his swing to miss it's mark, slicing only air.
If able to flank, Valsavis laughs heartily as the templar attempts to dodge his attack, but his swipe is quicker than his enemy anticipates and he opens a gash down the man's leg.

Round 4

If the templar still stands, Valsavis will step around him, ensuring that their ragtag group has him thoroughly surrounded.

mwk obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 9 + 2 = 24
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 + Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11 20 total damage
obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 8 + 2 = 24
damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 + Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7 10 total damage

Both of his attacks cut deeply into the struggling templar's flesh and Valsavis relishes in the downfall of his enemies.

If any of the reinfocements have arrived by this point and Valsavis' attacks are enough to bring the man below 0 HPs, he gets a free demoralize check at +18 to all those who witnessed Valsavis killing the man.

Depends on if the templar makes his save or not. If yes i need to concentrate, what is a standard action. Otherwise he would be free again. Do we post two rounds at once without knowing the results of the first round?

Yes, you post two rounds (Rounds 3 and 4) at a time. You can make assumptions as to what happens in Round 3 and give me some contingencies.

It's not perfect but that way I can keep the game moving at a decent pace. Once I recap later tonight, we will have accomplished 4 rounds of actions (well described actions) in 48 hours. I think that's pretty good.

Hearing the plaintive cry, "Someone help Kornugard!" he turned and moved gingerly though the mist. The old preserver was lying sprawled and unconscious, a woman wizard and the halfling crouching over him.

"The templar blew some sort of whistle. I think more of them are coming. We need to get going." He carefully picked up Kornugard and draped him over his shoulder. "Looks like there's another way out."

Barega turned to Eliantha, "He lives. We need to get out of danger, then we can examine him." He nodded as Gbaji picked up the old preserver's unconcious form. He looked at the other downed preservers. "I do not think that death provides a sure escape from the likes of Hamanu, but I fear carrying them may slow us."

He stepped out of the mist and surveyed the carnage. "Good warriors," he said, perhaps mildly surprised. He directed the Kluzd down the south hallway to interfere with the Templar's reinforcements.

"These may have something useful -- get going, I will catch up." He began quickly going over the corposes of Hamanu's soldiers, looking for useful items (healing potions, etc... will use detect magic). Ala'a is fast too, maybe she wants to help?.

Barega then ran down the second tunnel to catch up. As they made their way down the tunnel, Barega approached Lalali and then (hesitantly) Valsavis, closing some of their worst wounds with a touch of his hands. (cure light on lalali, pearl of power, cure light on valsavis (it's what i've got, sorry)).

if the bad guys are getting close while he's going over the corpses, let me know -- I figure Barega has a decent chance to distract them and get away.

CLW on Lalali: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
CLW on Valsavis: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Eliantha looked at Korgunard with concern, "He knew what he was doing. He was so close."

She then quickly dispelled the mist surrounding them and looked at each in turn. "You must not fail him. You must not fail Athas."

She sighed, "A lot of lives have been forfeited for this. Do you understand?"

TAG?

She sobbed as Jaggo succumbed to his wounds. "The north tunnel. Go there. But not out of it. About a couple of hundred feet, there is another illusion. On the ceiling. You must feel for it or you'll miss it. It leads to a small unfinished chamber. Stay there until things clear. Understand?"

Feel free to embellish your items but you get:

'fruits' (no potions on Athas and 'already identified')
4 CMW
2 CLW
3 bull's strength
1 hide from animals

Other:
5 Hamanu's medallions
1 Hamanu holy symbol
1 magical Hamanu cloak
1 magical macuahuitl
5 sets of MW armor and weapons

I won't micromanage encumbrance but let's 'be reasonable'.

Questions?

Valsavis stood over the templar's body a moment, looking down to verify that it lie still. At first he didn't notice Gbaji's meaty palm upon his shoulder, but his words registered in his mind. It was then that he realized his vision was blurred due to his excessive blood loss. He snorted at the half-giant's comment and gave him a quick nod, "Blood for blood," he said with a smirk.

He followed to where Korgunard lay, and took up sentry as Gbaji hefted the old preserver's limp body upon his shoulder.  He kept his eyes on the passageway, silently hoping they made their escape before more of Hamanu's men arrived.

"No, I've got no idea what's going on. Except we need to get out of here - fast."

"What about you? No point waiting here and getting killed."

Ala'a moved aside as the summoned kluzdu slithered down the southern hall, then watched as the others bundled up Korgunard and whispered with Eliantha. She nodded as Barega began picking over the corpses.

A scavenger. Smart, she thought as she joined him, quickly rifling through the soldiers' pouches.

"Leave those," she said, pointing to the medallions worn by the half-giants and the holy symbol that had been around the templar's neck. As usual, her voice had returned to normal now that the immediate violence was past.

She helped the halfling stuff the pile of enchanted potion fruits into his bag, then gathered the weapons dropped by the half-giants and the templar and tied them in a bundle using the templar's yellow cloak. She left the armor. No time for that.

Glancing over her shoulder, she pointed to the dead mages and called to Eliantha.

"Are they carrying anything that would lead the templars to you? If not we need to go - now."

Assuming we go:

Ala'a passed the bundle of weapons to Valsavis, who looked like he needed something to carry, then placed a hand on his shoulder.

"This will burn a little - the fire demands fuel for its blessings," she said, channeling healing flame into his flesh. "Now, let's move."

I'll cast cure moderate wounds on Valsavis for 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (4, 2) + 5 = 11. If anyone else is below half hit points I'll cast a CMW on them, as well, once we get to a place of safety.

Gbaji's taken a bit of a pasting. He wouldn't turn down a bit of healing, although he's running less on vapours than others.

I guess I didn't refresh my page before composing my last post. I'll try to get something up in response to the additional actions.

I'll give Lalali a few more hours before recapping later tonight at which time I'll answer for NPCs and roll to see if the new templar patrol got to the 'former safehouse' yet.

Having no words for the grieving woman, Valsavis watched as she sobbed over Jaggo's still warm corpse. Caught up in dark thoughts, he was caught off guard as Ala'a unexpectedly tossed him the bundle of weapons. He looked down at the macuahuitl, his own blood beginning to congeal on the barbs, Blood for blood, indeed...

Shrugging he tied off the bundle to his pack. He noticed that the rest of the group was readying themselves to leave, but Ala'a remained, her hands raised as she stepped towards him, he started, talking a half step back, his hands reflexively started for his blades, but she simply laid her hands upon his shoulder, "What--"

"This will burn a little - the fire demands fuel for its blessings," He sucked air through his teeth as the healing energies seared through his veins. But, he noticed she was true to her word, as some of his more grievous wounds had begun to close.

Swallowing some of his pride, "...Thank you. Maybe after we escape from this mess you can show me the proper way to harness the flames of my anger. If we're to do this thing, we must find a common ground upon which to base our efforts. May the flame unite us..."

Further down the passageway...

Valsavis couldn't help but smirk at the halfling's hesitance. Valsavis made no move as the halfling made to lay his hands upon his midsection. Once again, the searing blessing of healing surged through him. He nooded his thanks, "Thank you small one. Find comfort in the fact that for the time being, the fires of my rage have died and I understand we must work together to escape this place. If more of Hamanu's men arrive, take cover behind Gbaji and I." He said that last with a confidence that put the halfling's trepidation at ease.

Lalali felt somewhat refreshed from Barega´s strange magic, but also a bit tainted. After all, it was magic.
Seing Eliantha cradling Korgunard on the floor, waves of panic ran through her. What is that on his skin?
kn:arcane: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Ectoplasma? Perhaps something to do with the Astral Plane?

We should really hurry! This place is not safe anymore and any moment more of Hamanu´s scum could be here! But what to do with him?
Rather helpless she pointed on Korgunard.

If we want to take Jaggo with us and that's not like a plot point, I can stabilize him. (?)

Barega, no plot points here other than those I explicitly point out (i.e., you can't heal Korgunard now). Other than that, this is an ongoing story so you tell me what you want to do...
