Ariarh acknowledges Robert "The Drake" with a respectful bow of her head and a smile.
"'Tis good to see you, Robert. And thank you for the escort into town." Looking from Brett to Drake, "I agree with Brett. I think Priestess Moira Lochlin seems a suitable and capable deputy until Master Oleg and Lady Turon return."
Ariarh then addresses Brett, "I would appreciate the short rest, as I'm sure our horses would. Some food for us and our animals, restocking of gear/supplies and then back on the road to Saravale. I would also like to have a quick word with Moira before we leave. Two hours sounds sufficient. We need to get back to the capital as soon as possible. Then we can sleep in our own beds."
Ariarh is concerned with Shaezon's condition and how to provide a cure. Perhaps if she discreetly speaks with Moira Lochlin (in a general sense as to how one could manage to separate two bonded objects), she can be more helpful to the wizard.
Then motioning to Drake to gain his attention, "How is Dasha?"
"The young woman Dasha is excellent - she seems to have done well as the town has grown," Drake says, somewhat distractedly.
"However - no doubt you may... that is to say... She will be happy to be... When we make our journey south you will no doubt have time to speak to her then..." he adds somewhat stiffly, then nods his head in a quick bow as he turns and leaves you to continue with your preparations.
You wonder at Drake's mood - you have a sense that he is uncomfortable speaking about Dasha - but obviously there is something between him and the girl that prompts this concern...
Meanwhile, Drake himself is re-organizing things with the packing. If you are leaving in two hours - he is going to order the heavy packs and gear to be removed from the horses so they can rest better.
Meanwhile, he sends a lad to the shrine to inform Moira of your coming.

Collected observations about healing...
Ariarh and Shaezon - though Moira is not entirely sure what to do - you stumble upon a piece of random good luck!
Apparently Doctor White informs you of a method of medicine that he learned while in Numidia - one that uses some form of crude science; as you see it!
White suggests that if a proper medical hand - not a mere "sawbones" (he scoffs at that suggestion) - could use a precision tool of edged weapon (he stresses precision tool here) - such a person could cut into the torso...
Again, he does not allow for the type of "Sawbones" who merely cuts off a limb filled with rot and possible disease.
Where the trouble was - that was something more then a rotten limb - it was inside the elf - so he says. He suggests that if a precision cutter was able to slice into the elf and cut into the lung, they could remove it - but it would (he suggests) take an entire team of specialists for this.
He recommends - at the least - a specialist who uses a powerful opiate (though he will - grudgingly - admit that a sustained "Sleep" spell could work - he feels common-sense metamagic science suggests that this would fail - as "Sleep" is dispelled when pain is endured... He therefore suggests a powerful sleep spell - or, better - an extremely potent opiate to make sure the elf doesn't feel pain - unless the elf believes he can tolerate the feeling of a thin blade cutting into his flesh and directly into his lungs!)
He also recommends that a second medical specialist is standing by with multiple healing potions - or spells - be available - depending on how good the cutter is - it may be a relatively short and easy procedure - but if the cutter is bad - it may take a long time; in either case the elf will suffer physical damage during this procedure each moment he is being cut!
The expert with the opium should be monitoring the condition of the elf at all times - as soon as his health drops to dangerous levels - at that moment the potion, or spell, should be given to stop him from taking more damage.
This procedure should be applied - then reapplied - until the piece is cut from the lung fully - and all the while the body is consistently healed with whatever could be used to heal it - until the piece is removed fully.
Doc White also allows that - of course - in addition the person that uses the opiate and the person who does the healing - that naturally you'll need someone to use the blade. But he recommends someone with a steady hand. He suggests that a person who has a bad hand - unsteady hand - could actually damage the situation even worse!
Therefore - find someone with a steady hand - that is certainly very important too...
So - a three man team - a person to handle his opiates and monitor his health - a person to use healing potions or spells on him (though that could be the same person, he concedes) - and the final person - the cutter - they will need a very steady hand...
Moira is not sure how to advise you - other then Doctor White's theory - she knows no magical means to remove this thing - mainly due to the fact that is somehow bound to the Ents - and they are strange and mysterious creatures...
Besides - you sense there is strange magic besides here - Fey magic - this is beyond your combined knowledge... For now...
Perhaps the stone texts you copied will reveal more...
Sadly - the Doc's theories seem correct - your collective knowledge knows no way to remove this thing from Shaezon - not at this time, however... but you sense and hope there is a chance for healing later - and hope! That is - if you can find a "cutter" for the job...

How far is Numeria from here?
given his limited options Shaezon is leaning toward just keeping the thing for the time being.
Hard to say - Numeria is a nation - it borders the western frontier of Brevoy - which is north of you.
You would need to stab north into southern Brevoy (roughly a ten day journey) - and then you would need to travel west to the frontier...
The real question is: what part of Numeria are you interested in? The southern-most edge of Numeria is different then farthest southern settlement - if you stab to the most "cosmopolitan" - and southern-most settlement - you would need to travel (roughly) three to four weeks - and Numeria is filled with lots of unfriendlies.
For example - the raid on Oleg's village was from Numeria and southern Brevoy - the group of Troll Barbarians - half-orc charioteer's - and so forth - came from the very place you're looking for. But they were probably nomadic - so you might bump into another such group on the way north.
- More on getting a "trained cutter" can be found soon... For now - it seems like a good idea to examine the translations of the stone carvings - and, perhaps it may be a good idea to identify the magical gear you have already found.

After Moira Lochlin and Doc White's conversation with Ariarh and Shaezon.
"Mayhap, we wait a little longer, Shaezon. I will continue to monitor your condition and together we can decipher the words we jotted down from the walls found at the Temple, discover the purpose of the woven basket and golden leaves and then hopefully we will have further information regarding this bonding and how to cure it. We will also put word out for a trained cutter."

With all the information you have gathered – especially regarding Shaezon. As Brett stands there picking his teeth, you can see the new horses are now freshly saddled and ready to go.
A guardsmen has been assigned to ride with you south to the border of the township property – some seven miles south of here – formally see you off – then return north with any other orders.
Drake and Dasha are naturally coming – the young lass seeming much healthier then before – as if she is doing well here; both mentally and physically. You notice she is riding well – and her clothes are well tailored – cut in elven fashion – which does not really surprise you – given the large amount of elven females who have recently arrived in the town.
The pack horses with gear have enough fresh foods so that you may avoid the meager “trail rations” you have been munching on – even while speeding you along so that you need not hunt for meals. There is also several tents for four people – Drake has enough of his tents that twelve of you can be comfortable under them – should the weather turn foul.
He has also brought some various ledgers, a few small chests of personal effects that – you suspect – belong to Dasha.
This aside you see that the fellow on the crudely painted pony is striding forward to you all with a confident and cocky swagger. Barbaric in dress – face-paint and crude necklaces made of what looks like Ogre teeth – you suddenly do a double take as you recognize Gragakh the goblin! He seems much heartier as well – and you notice; after careful examination – that when he rides his spear carries a large pennant with various crude drawings on it. It takes you some time - but you think he is using the flag as a story of his life – as you recognize – vaguely – the subtleties of the pictures and think you can make out what they are trying to represent.
Drake informs you subtly that he cannot leave Gragakh behind – not for a matter of distrust – but, ironically – quite the opposite. As Gragakh has sworn himself to protect the “tribe” – and he has determined in his own mind that Drake is “Chief” – he refuses to leave Drakes side on the quest to the south.
Drake admits that Gragakh may look somewhat… weak – but he suggests that the goblin is far more crafty then he lets on. With little trouble in Oleg’s village – Drake feels it is best to have as much help as possible to the south – besides, he couldn’t, in good conscious – allow Gragakh to break his oath, especially as there was no particular reason to prevent it.
Therefore – you are all able to pick up your gear and move out – and are free to head quickly to Saravale. Naturally, you can ask Drake any questions on the return trip – or, if you prefer – we can simply fast-forward it.
Meanwhile - after roughly forty minutes of riding, the scout salutes, and then turns to head back to Saravale and you are now all on your way.
Dain GM
Dasha is quiet and shy - as usual - but makes pleasant small talk on the journey south with you.
You believe that the spirit that is haunting her seems to be - for the most part - at peace. She has not been haunted, or rather - troubled - by the spirit for a long time.
Further - she is quite content to be at Drake's side - her "girl-like" crush for his seems to be replaced by a sense of maturity - and you suspect this is due largely to the fact that her spirit is being groomed or healed by the thing that was haunting her...
You suspect that Drake's presence, and the sense of purpose she has found in the town is helping her tremendously... Not to mention the power that is inside her and seems to be brought to some harmony.
Even as you ride on you notice that Gragakh is being very helpful and deferential to Drake - slavering and bowing and scraping by him - calling him "chief" - and "boss" - and "headman" - and other variations on it - many of it in Goblin-speak, and other in tongues - all of which sound harsh and uncouth, but if you know the language you can tell they are honest praise.
Gragakh also fawns on Dasah - calling her the boss's "Woman" - and when he leaves the party to hunt (though he does not need to - he still prefers fresh kills) - he always is sure to offer fresh meat to them first - which they always politely refuse.
Drake himself is conducting himself more like a nobleman then a bandit - you are hard pressed to remember that is was less then a year ago that this man was a mere scout for the Stag Lord - and is now redeemed to be the man you see before you today.
This tale of redemption will - no doubt - be of interest to some members of the party. Even still - you continue to advance quickly - the weather has a sudden chill to it, and you are free to use the tents to stay warm, and are they at least very comfortable in the nighttime.
Even so - you push on... Soon you journey is close to ended. You will reach Saravale on the morning, and are now free to ask any final questions and make whatever plans you feel best before you enter your beloved homeland..

Ka'etil laughs about the little goblin, smiling at his loyalty, the feeling of his recent conversion filling him being. His madness seems to have subtly subsided as well. on the ride he wants to take some time to speak with Drake and the others on the laws of the land.
"Drake, there are a few things of note that you need to know about Saravale, although I do not know what will have transpired since we left. There is a group rising in power, the Black Koda, whom we suspect has connections to the Osirons in the south. There are also undead and other creatures in the swamp to the south that we must address, and defend against. Rumor has it that there lies a settlement of sorts to the west that is also a potential threat to our lands, and may be sending spys there, hunting for weaknesses and engaging in subversion." Ka'etil explains to Drake, in the company of the other council members.
"We best hammer out the laws we wish to enact upon our arrival, decide what code to ratify, and if we wish to
Ka'etil will find a moment when he can speak with drake privately, and with a casual air, he approaches Drake, and will quietly chat with him. [b]"I have recently been in contact with a Half-orc black-marketeer by the name of Grishnak. He is the one that has provided me with this information, which I have left with Sir Sylvath. Grishnak should keep himself out of any serious trouble and provide information that makes the land safer. I wanted to let you know about that arrangement. It has so far been beneficial, in that there is a direct line to the more unsavory element of the town, and will hopefully allow us to maintain peace and prevent our lands from being undermined." he tells drake, carefully gauging his reaction to the idea.
Ariarh Kane
Adding to what Kae has shared with Robert "the Drake", and doing so in an equally discreet fashion,
"We left Saravale at a rather crucial juncture. There is unrest among the people, between the rougher tent city dwellers and the general community of goodly folk. Alaric Winter is unable to lead the town at present and has taken leave to sort out his affairs. Anuk-su is the Council's ward and presently under my care. The swamp crater inbetween the fortress and fishing village is in need of purging and purifying of the fell things living in its bowels and there are some new strange inhabitants in our capital -- acquaintances of the equally mysterious and ominious Mister Wu. We also have the threat of those who would take our capital from us and an alliance on the brink of collapse if we cannot prove to him and his father the Duke that Saravale is worthy of such a working relationship. We have mysteries surrounding us on every turn. As you can see, Robert, we have a full plate and your counsel would be appreciated."
Dain GM
Robert listens quietly and politely to the conversation – but you see his normally courteous face grow somewhat grim, and concerned, with the news.
”Very good – of course. It seems there are quite a few things that must be sorted out. If I may – I have a few brief questions of my own, before we arrive,” he adds; speaking to Kae and Ariarh, while Brett merely munches on a quid of tobacco.
Naturally - Sir Dashan is giving you a bit of berth - so you can discuss "Matters of State" without distraction from him - Anuk-su is watching him - very obviously - and singing a little song in Draconic... Aliento is ignoring everything and attempting to read some notes he has compiled as he rides near you... Dasha is riding a few dozen yards back, simply enjoying watching the scenery - as if on a leisurely ride about the country.
Arasmes and Shaezon - you notice that Drake is deferential to you both, and equally courteous to you... it seems that - at the least - he has not forgotten your assistance in the town and treats you each as a person of weight or importance - in other words; he treats you as if you were each a formal "gentleman" - in the traditional meaning of the word... Finally, it should be noted that Gragakh is riding back somewhat - close to Dasha, as if guarding her - but, if you glance closely - you can see his tiny eyes miss nothing around you - and he is paying extremely good attention to your conversation, his eyes flicking from each person's weapons - noting their proximity to Drake - almost as if he is preparing to kill any who suddenly threaten Drake - you do not take this as an offensive action - rather - you see it more as he is acting like a very professional bodyguard to Drake - and, by extension - to Dasha as well.
”Now, of my brief questions, I should say that, firstly – there seems to be a regrettable amount of scum and villainy in this town – who is empowered to deal with this – is it a constable; magistrate – or something more formal? And, of course, toward that end – what is the strength of the men in his… er… in their keeping,” Robert amends, not sure if this person is, in fact – a man or a woman.
”With such trouble I presume that you, naturally – have a goodly sized militia or more advanced town watch to police the troubles. To be more specific – within the basic confines of the routine town watch how many men are dedicated to the missives of basic patrol in the form of men-at-arms and the like? And, of course, what of spellcasting – both arcane and divine – as well as the judiciary branch which empowers and enforces your laws? Further – what is the basic status of the members of your watch – are they veterans of many campaigns, would you say? Or are they merely experienced with battle for the past several years – I ask this, naturally – because if the situation is as troubled as you say – I will need to know what type of caliber of men you would prefer to recruit; and of course I presume standard rates of pay for any new recruits apply – but I’m sure you have such provisions detailed already – I need only see the proper paperwork on such things when we return for the particulars of coin and so forth.”
”Next; you mentioned some troubles with a large swamp? Please remember – I have never seen the town before – except from the most excellent document that was sent north recently – some sort of circular on paper to alert us of town news. With little to go on – as there has been no map forthcoming – this “swamp” you speak of sounds like a fell place. What, then, is the number of the scouts which are dedicated to the protection of the town via the exploration of the swamp and the pursuit of enemies who may have ventured into it? Are they all cavalry – or do you have a few dozen or so men on foot to “beat the ground” as well? Also – when this company is not engaged in examining this swamp – what his the approximate range of the radius of their general patrol of the town? How many miles – and, naturally – will you want that extended now that you have rumors of external threats – or would you prefer the men functioning as internal garrison within the confines of the city? Either are possible – in this, though – I must bow to your experience, having not yet seen the town…”
Drake snaps his fingers and motions abruptly – Gragakh kicks his stubby pony forward so he is now at the side of the man – able to hear better and listen to all that is being said.
”This group – this “Black Koda”? What provisions do you have in place for such traitorous scum should be they be apprehended? In other words – which person is your chief investigator for such crimes? In my experience a Justicar – that is – a holy knight, sometimes called a paladin – of high rank is often best; for they perceive much in the hearts of men. It is also said that it is difficult to deceive them – and dangerous to try! But, in this town, you may have other means of legal authority. Therefore – how many men do you have appointed to your committee of judges? It is the standard three – or have you selected a new method of advocacy and the distribution of the law?” he asks; looking to Gragakh – giving him a look that say, basically – Attend to these matters, for we must know, at the least – the basics on how this town is to be governed and what its rightful leaders would have of us… Who is good, who is bad – find out now and put your ear to learning more! –
”Next – you mentioned something about a man named “Wu” – an odd name, if you'll forgive me for saying so – but of him I should like more information – I suspect, though – if he is nearly as dangerous as you hint – that he is naturally being observed and it is likely a detailed file on him can be found with your papers at the capital; which I presume also include the full missives for any and all legal ramifications that shall be imposed on any who should infringe upon the law. Of course – regarding this file on the suspect named "Wu", as well as your full writ on the law for the citizenry – naturally I shall formally familiarize myself with both, at once, immediately on my arrival – though any modest briefing on this Wu person can be useful at this time, if you prefer – but, only the basics, of course. Naturally, if you would not mind sharing the usual data that your spy network has discovered; such as his age, race, background, nationality – known associates, suspected crimes – known religious practices – accomplices – you know – the basic particulars which you have, no doubt, collected at this time. Of course – the more detailed information on this person can easily wait until we return,” he adds with a polite gesture, indicating he does not mind waiting for the file, because – as you hinted – there is indeed quite a bit on his plate. However, his face says he is unconcerned - for he has great faith in your abilities and trusts that you have collected, at the least - the basics of what he will need to do so as to protect this town better.
Brett glances at Kae and Ariarh and shrugs.
”Well – where would ye two like to begin?” Brett says, spitting to the leeward, eagerly waiting to hear how his co-consul members would answer these “brief questions”.

Ariarh wished she knew where to start. Their capital had no such formal positions filled as far as she was aware -- their lack of time within the city walls and their constant change in council members had left them ill organised. Ariarh would have sighed out aloud but inside she was embarrassed. How could she admit before all these people that Saravale was ill-equipped and ill-manned. They had left Khrovin and then Alaric in charge and the only smart thing undertaken by Alaric was to impose a tax on DeVille's establishment but then he had gotten "ill" so it really was not his fault that other pressing matters were not attended to. She was a simple ranch girl come druid and all this running a land and people was new and to be honest a little stressful to her. If only she had more time in Saravale then she could start implementing changes or at least oversee them. Ry takes a deep breath and begins, "How much time do you have Robert? The situation in Saravale is not as organised or efficient as it is in Oleg's town. A number of circumstances have prevented us from establishing various formal positions in the town. Recently, the silver kobold knight, Sylvath, was allotted the position of Warden and he has those uncanny senses you have spoken with which to detect lies and truth. There is a garrison but we have not established a militia. Kae, as our General, has spoken of setting up a militia and training men but alas we have taken on another quest and as yet nothing has been established. The first thing we must do when we return is deputize more folk and have them undertake orders and set things in place." Ry has reddened for all the honesty at their lack of management. "As for an official spy network, there are probably illegitimate networks in place, and Brett or Kae would be able to answer that better than I, seeing that Brett is the spymaster and Kae has his sources."

Drake wets his lips a moment as he looks between Ariarh and Brett...
"So - the number of men-at-arms in your garrison - and the formal rankings of spellcasters within their divisions, subdivided by arcane and divine schools - peppered with years of military experience to back the huge amount of citizens so close to a undead-infested swamp... " Drake says in confusion.
"Sorry..." Brett says with a shake of his head.
"And the complex subtleties of a legal system utilized to bring justice to the harsher members of society that infest your very streets?"
"Nope," Brett retorts with a sad shrug.
"But - but surely you've at least organized a formally - and well-constructed - team of people to infiltrate the underbelly of this society which you believe to be so seedy and dangerous that you would naturally prescribe threats to specific individuals - such as this mister Wu - and make sure they are, in fact - who they say they are, and are not currently engaged in damaging your town?" Drake says, his face paling noticeably.
"Yeah... sort of slipped our mind," Brett says, pointing to Kae and Ariarh with his thumb, mouthing It's not my fault pal - I tried to get them to do stuff
"But naturally - at the least - you have a specialized team of legal experts to produce, publish, distribute and make known your laws and policies - all of which I can assume are formally writ up with the legal code of the land - as well as important documents on specific individuals of who I must meet and do business with - for good or ill?" Drake says, dabbing his face with a kerchief.
"Ummm... about those guys? Ahh... I think it be their month off, or something like that... We don't got none of that stuff," Brett adds with an embarrassed grin.
"So - that is to say - you have an entire town - if not nation - that hinges on the success of its capital - and the very people that have taken oaths to run this town, and ensure its safety and success - are even now riding with me - but you have not left any of these things or people in your town besides?" Drake says with a pained voice, his hand rubbing his left shoulder very hard.
"Well - yeah - that's why we must have figured ye need to come in - someone needs to get stuff done, Brett adds, looking up Robert with a winning smile.
Robert - the Drake - Tyrell; former noble from a deposed family, outlaw, reformed bandit - tracker, ranger, hunter, killer and now - esteemed counselor in a growing town - has turned a slight shade of green.

Sir Bronwyn worked with them before he left. They are tasked with defending the boarders of the city, as well as keeping the peace, but as we do not have a formal code of law, they are simply to patrol and address clear cut disturbances."

Gragakh is cursing in Goblin - clearly he is not pleased. If you could venture a guess, you would think that he feels there is an inordinate amount of protection in the town - not to mention the fact that he is certainly not happy at how things are falling out.
If any of you speak goblin - you would know that what he said is, roughly - untranslatable - but something akin to "Who the hell is running this joint? They need their balls in a vice!" - naturally this is not the literal definition - but it is a goblin slang expression that infers that the current "chief" needs to be taken down a few pegs for his bad job running things - and generally pain is the best way to deal with bad management.

"That is good that you have roughly 300 men and cavalry - but, that is to say - it seems as if you have a large amount of high leveled people leaving your party relatively soon after they have joined it," Drake says.
"And - without a formal code of law - how can you maintain anything? That is to say - without law - what is there to maintain, except - at best - a sort of status quo! But - but - where does that leave us? What would be best enforced, or not enforced, without a law to examine?" he asks in confusion, looking at all of you.
Ariarh Kane
Quietly Ariarh answers, "We have some laws. They are written down. The rest? We have discussed them, however they have not been ratified and thus have not been distributed among the townsfolk. I wish I could give you better news. With dwindling Council numbers we have been stretched more than we'd like, more than our people deserve." Ry's voice trails off and she grows silent.
Arasmes ibn'Fayad
Arasmes chimes in, seeing the look of consternation on Ariarh's face, at this point and says As Councilman Ariarh says, I have written out a set of laws and presented them for their review. Unfortunately due to the pressing matter at the Temple of Erastil...which needed to be taken care of immediately as I'm sure you understand...they were not able to be discussed thoroughly and ratified. So as far as the laws go, I imagine that will not take long to remedy. Of course, I am not a council member and can only give my advice but I think that perhaps what should be done is that those in formal positions should try and focus on their tasks set them by their positions. For instance, Councilman Rowan, and I only use you as an example and not in any way disparaging your work so please to not take it so, but the tasks of preparing yourself and your companions for exploration, while necessary, should perhaps fall under the purview of the Warden or Marshal, I forget which one is the outside of the city one, while your task would be to provide as much information as possible on possible threats while exploring, thus giving the Warden Marshal more information upon which to base his preparations. Again this is only a suggestion from an outsider to show how perhaps by staying within your positions you may be able to get more done in less time. Arasmes bows and pulls back a bit to let you continue your conversation.
Shaezon Silverfall
"I believe I can help with at least part of your problems. I was considering taking on an apprentice or even starting a formal wizadry school complete with library for public use. I also have a rather ingenious idea for discovering whom amongst the population has magical talent. Lack of time has been the biggest factor preventing this so far. Even the average person can learn to cast a few minor spells ad nausea. Having a portion of the population so talented could go a long way to the prosperity of one's city-state."
"Of course what I propose is a long term solution. The apprentices, etc could perform a number of functions for the city in order to pay for their tuition, such as spellcasting services and serving on the city watch."
"The first step for such a school would be to find a proper location to set up shop. I'm open to suggestions on this as I am still quite new to the area."
"Of course in the short term, my advisory and spellcasting services are available as always."
Ariarh Kane
Ariarh looks from Arasmes to Shaezon. For all the heated discussions between them all, the newcomers stood by them still and she was beholden to them for their loyalty. She worried over Saravale and the town's future. There was currently no formal leader, no council appointed proxy in Alaric's absence -- that would have to be rectified upon their return to the capital. She wondered how Oleg and Lady Turon were handling the running of the town in their absence -- Ariarh hoped that Grishnak and his people and Mister Wu and his lot were behaving themselves and not undermining the integrity of Saravale. Then there was Lord Delain and his men and she wondered over the Breyovian nobleman and his observations and interviews with the local folk. There was a knot forming inside her stomach.
Ry bestows first upon Arasmes and then Shaezon a grateful smile and a courteous, albeit discreet bow of her head. The scale of what they as a Council were trying to accomplish with so little members was daunting. Upon their return to the capital, Brett, Kae, Oleg and she would sit down and decide what to do with the summoner and wizard (and also she needed to help Shaezon find a cure for is affliction -- the inscriptions from the temple wall needed to be deciphered quick smart!).
Addressing Drake specifically, "Mister ibn'Fayad is correct in that once we return to Saravale, we must undertake much to get the capital back on track and running more effectively before we leave for our next quest south with Sir Dashan and Mister Aliento. In this, I and the rest of the council are in agreement, and with your counsel Robert, I am sure we will achieve something significant. Aye, I realise there is much to do but we are all capable and committed. I will personally sit down and write up a comprehensive set of laws decided upon and ratified by the Council and any advisors we bring into the discussions."

"Gentelmen, seems that went as well as can be expected," Kay says to the two men after his motivational speech. He sighs, "So what sorts of orders did Bronwyn leave you with?"
"Ahem," Garith pipes in, "SIR Bronwyn gave us orders on training the men, techniques, and combat strategies, as well as..." he is cut of by Arsinian.
"We got what you just saw in drills, but not much else. We're a militia, and we ain't got no threats right now, so what's an army supposed to be doin?" and after a cough and glare from the imposing Garith, he adds, "sir."
"Alright, well, looking at the reports, and judging by the fact that there's no real police force right now, and the council is going to be setting out, We need to maintain the peace. I'd like to run constant patrols, several shifts a day, with two of hour shileld fighters with an archer and striker partoling the streets."
"Then the infiltrators, I'd like to keep eyes and ears out for Mr Wu, the Black Kodas and pay attention to any underground goings on. A note to you two, The dealer, Grishnak has been supplying me with intelligence, but I don't want that getting out, lest he become less of an asset. So treat him normally, but don't damage that connection."
"We also want patrols on the wall, making sure nothing attacks from the swamp, and have a force at the ready should there be any attacks. The cavalry can make wide sweeps several times a day, checking the boarders and ensuring there is nothing massing, or moving into the area."
these are kae's suggestions to the gents, but they can have their own input. DUnno if dain wants to run them, as they are in charge (under sylvath, of course) while Kae is away and not giving orders.
What the plan looks like is 3 archers, and infantry on the wall at all times, 2 or 3 4-man patrols making rounds repeatedly through the city, units of say 5 riders doing perhaps hour long sweeps every few hours, and the rest of the men at the ready, with one third given time off at a time, but ready to take up arms if there is a severe issue and they are called out. Day to day shouldn't be too taxing on the soldiers, tho...
Kae will convey these detials to the group. Got a meeting now, so i gotta run

Remembering the inscription Shae turns to Ariah, "And of course, Lady Ariah, I am ready and willing to help decipher that script when it suits you." He says returning her a genuine smile.
Then he coughs a bit and covers his mouth with a handkerchief. He quickly composes himself, removes the handkerchief and smiles again.
Ariarh Kane
Upon the wizard's words and the sound of his coughing (which distressed her more often since discovering the cause of it), she steadily swivels in her saddle to look at him, "I'd be honoured to have your assistance, Shaezon. It may take us some time but together we may yet solve it more swiftly." How she wished her parents were here right now, especially her mother who would know more than her of what to do and how to do it. I sound just like a child now, needing her parents to step in and save the day. I am nineteen, soon to be twenty! I should stop with this ceaseless anxiety, it is unproductive, Ry muses silently, her brows knit together.

Okay – there are a few things to deal with – I am going to first deal with things “out of game” – then swing back to in-game voice for the final part to make this easier.
1. I need you to “Stat out” your officers – I need the standard 25 point by – 2 traits (one must be regional – from wherever region they hail from) – and all there basic gear.
In addition to that I will need (at least) a brief paragraph on their personalities – how they are supposed to act – age, attitude, etcetera. At which point you are – nominally – in charge of them. However – once their attitude is set – I may have to (though I hope rarely) – step in as the “Voice” of these men – but this should only have to be for plot issues or story issues.
These men will be paid out of your PERSONAL cut – they are loyal to you first – but they are not “cohorts” – think of them as “Followers” who are able to level when you take them on adventures.
Each officer starts on Level 1 – with their maximum starting gold for gear. HOWEVER – as they are YOUR men – and paid for by YOU – you are free to supplement their income with your own funds if you would prefer to add on to their gear. I will be even more generous – if you want to “Crunch” their starting gold with yours (i.e. say they “bought nothing” – but have 200 GP as a first level Fighters – and you give them an additional 200 GP to buy a masterwork piece of gear – leaving the remaining stuff for their equipment). Realistically they should buy everything on level 1 – then you should have to sell them back stuff – whatever – forget that – it’s boring.
The rules for these “level 1” officers are formally on the board. At this time it has been 2 weeks that they are under your employ – this will be reflected from your “Cut” of the treasury. All other “Soldiers” function as 1st level Warriors – stat them each out accordingly by unit (an archer build, a footmen build, and so on – also with the 25 point buy, 2 traits – but just make these “universal” – as in, all archers have the same stats, footmen, same stats, and so on).
They will also need money – but their money is based on “Profession: Guardsmen” – on level 1 I am going to rule they have 4 Total in that field – they can “Take 10” on their weekly income (total of 14, half of which in GP a week – for 7 GP a week, per man) – the 300 men will cost you, therefore – 2,100 GP a week – and at this rate it is now 4,200 GP.
This fee can be deducted from the total treasury – but it needs to be paid for – as they now work for the town.
Cost: So far the town is now down 2,400 GP for the guardsmen. Kae – you are also down the personal costs of your first level officers.
I will need these things statted-up and sent to me as soon as you can. Sooner the better – the town will need backup post haste! Trust me…
2. You have formally put the men under Sir Sylvath – he will obey your orders, for the most part – unless trouble arises – in which case he will divert the men to new tasks.
Concerning your observations…
”Begging your pardon, sir…” Arsinian says with a long sigh ”we’re just soldiering types – not spies – how’d ye want us to look after folk secret-like? You mention this Koda gang, well – we’ll see they don’t bust any heads – but as fer this Wu fellah? There ain’t no charges on him – folks be nervous around him – or they love him – depending on who you talk to… How’d you want us to handle this situation – as we’re running drills with sword and shield – we can’t just send guards to watch him, eh? That’d make him suspicious of us… And anyhow – watch him for what? What is it we’re looking for, if you don’t mind… sir.”

A few quick posts out of game – then in game commentary to follow…
1. As I see it – Arasmes is currently making suggestions for how to help the town. However - is there anything specific he wants to do for himself? That is, does he have any specific plans, and so on? What will he do with Qwykee – how shall he heal Cali’s Con drain – and what is his plans in general for being included in town in terms of basic ideas for himself. In other words – is there something specific you’d like to work on that is based just on Arasmes? Shae is preparing a Wizard school - I wondered if you had any plans like that on your own?
Cut to “in game”.
Brett looks up at Arasmes with a sudden glance, then tossing a nervous look at the Ustalavians, as if they may be listening in...
”Lad – while we be appreciating any help and all – and you do be raising a fair point on how to rustle up help for a mission – I’ll keep that in mind fer the future – specifically when we done head south… Well – here’s the thing; I recollect ye coming up with some fine suggestions – but it ain’t quite fair to be calling them “laws” – ye’re handy in a fight – but law ain’t hardly fair – we done make the laws, and I ain’t turning down good advice, no sir – but, as we all be friends here – if word got out that the ruling folk here be taking a newcommer’s say-so on how to rule the town and country – they may be getting suspicious.”
”Now – don’t mistake me – as I be saying, I like yer suggestions – but we be in a real delicate spot now… We’ve had a lot of folk look up to people in our little berg – trusty types, too – paladin, priest – and other folk, besides, who done run with us over the past few months – and what done happened? Hell – they left – not to mention our former boss and mate left too… Town be nervous on things – real nervous like – that lad with the paper who done copied the news at our picnic dinner – no telling what he’ll be putting up as we all left the place – again – with naught but a few “out-o-towner’s” to run the place, being Oleg and Lady Turon – anyhow – here’s what I be saying…. Whether ye like it, or nay – people be judging us all first on looks, until they get to know us better – and against ye… well, ye got a hard fight, especially as I reckon that Oleg most likely blabbed yer bloodline all over bloody town after we left, and that alone may make folk nervous - especially lasses like that bloody dame Goodwyfe! But, well - the point is – out here it be good and fine – ye be among mates – but in town – be careful-like on yer talk and such – otherwise folk be thinking that their government be runned by outsiders – and then we get some trouble…” Brett adds to Arasmes, after hearing his ideas.
You sense that Brett seems nervous for some reason - as if he is afraid that if outsiders like Aliento and Sir Dashan overhear your comment then they may think that the slowly growing town is accepting rules of law from people who have just arrived - and that any outsider who hears such comments may be suspicious of who is really in charge at Saravale, and could loose faith in the competence of the government.
To divest the “Brett Lingo” from the above – the short answer is that another challenge you will have to deal with – as a group of leaders for a town – is maintaining the citizen’s loyalty. Because of some things that happened before you all left – Anuk-su attacking you in front of Oleg – Oleg then getting drunk and spilling the beans in the tavern about how Alaric acted, Anuk-su reacted, and the presence of a Tiefling closeted in the Council Chambers – certain words/conversations with Grishnak and a chief Council members which makes it look the members of the government are “On the Take” – the sudden disappearance – again – of everyone with any formal authority in town – except for Oleg – there’s a lot of challenges for you when you come back… Most notably is the fact that Grishnak is now informing all in sundry that he has the council "in his pocket" - and that Oleg is giving a Tale of Woe to any and all who can hear - and that the fact that there are some new folk who have arrived from the Southlands just two days before you returned - including a strange winged creature - a Changeling Priestess - an elf and a rather intimidating species of half-dwarf... Never mind what your new "guests" are doing; AND what is happening while you are gone... Oh wait - that's too much information - forget all that ;)
Dain GM
If you’d like to have a compiled list of “laws” – from both Alaric’s ideas in the past – and the new ideas now – I encourage this. This compilation of laws will most likely take you several hours – but it can be “ret-conned” – to have happened on the journey home.
Naturally, you are free to take any suggestions from anyone at this time on the way back.
Dain GM
1 person marked this as a favorite.
1. While it is true that anyone in town can – theoretically – learn magic – such a person must be statted out and be – at the least – a level one caster who can cast 0 level spells. A level one caster – who can do this – will be someone who needs to be paid for “out of pocket”.
Like the “officers” under Kae’s command – they will be considered under your personal pay/contract – and they will function (essentially) like a “follower” who can go up in level if they are taken on adventures.
Anyone in town who can already cast Cantrips may be able to work for you – or the town – at cost. But standard rules of payment for them shall apply.
Meanwhile – you are free to recruit any “apprentices” that you wish when you return. They can start as a “level 1” playable class – 25 point-buy – 2 traits (one must be regional, from whatever region they come from) and maximum starting gold. Their price is paid out of your own pocket. If you want a group of “level 1” followers casting spells to clean up the town – that is okay – leadership will give you that soon – but this way is faster – quicker – and your “followers” can level if you take them adventuring.
See the post to Kae about his men for more specific details on this subject – if you are interested.
2. Decoding the inscription will take time – it will take at least 100 hours of uninterrupted work to decipher it – a working knowledge in both Celestial – and Sylvan is needed – but you may be able to shorten this time if you have allies working on it together. If you – Ariarh, and Aliento are working on it – you can each handle “33” hours – you can only do 8 hours of a work a day – of course – so it will take you a little over 4 days – presuming you all work on it at the same time – without interruption – for at least 8 hours a day (the other 8 hours are sleeping – and 8 hours for “eating/etcetera – as per the book. However – if you are willing to forgo food – which you can certainly do… You personally may be able to pick up speed with this study… Tell me how long in a day you wish to study – and I will do what I can to make it happen – though penalties may apply for missing extended sleep without the Feat: Endurance).
Regarding Checks – you are able to make a “Linguistic Check” – DC of 18. For every time you “Succeed” in it – you will be able to cut off one hour. For every +5 you beat the check – you may cut off an additional hour – you can make one of these checks every hour. However – for every -5 you fail the check you will have to add on +2 hours (that is – if you get an 8 – 13 you will add on an additional +2 hours).
You do not need to make the checks, though – if you merely want to just “do the hours”.
Let me know your plans…

Just looked up linguistics and here is what it says regarding how long it takes;
"Action : Varies. Deciphering a page of ordinary text takes 1 minute (10 consecutive rounds). Creating a forgery can take anywhere from 1 minute to 1d4 minutes per page. Detecting a forgery using Linguistics takes 1 round of examination per page."
I assume each check will be a minute or two, but whatever you want it to be is fine. I'm bored at work, so I'm just sitting here making rolls.

I missed that. Well, I havent done the math yet, but I guess it'll still work out to be shorter than it would otherwise be, but not much. Given that time fram their's not much point in rolling.

Ok, counting the -2 as two hours lost and the +0 as one hour lost Reached 100 effective hours in 55 actual hours or work. So roughly half the time if I am working independantly. 55 hours / 8 hours per day = 6.875 days to complete if working alone.

Shaezon's 55 -22 = 33 \ 8/d = 4.125 days to decipher as a team. Anyone else?

33 - ariah's 9 = 24 / 8/d = 3 days even
With group effort we can decipher the writings in exactly 3 days

Arsinian isn't exactly a "Soldiering-type" he's an ex-bandit that is a motivating trainer and leader, so he's worked with thieves and sneaks before, and while he himself isn't one, he's familiar with them.
Garrith is not, not at all, but he runs the Cavalry, so that's ok.
All of their atat info is on their profiles, if you check that. Or did you want character sheets like for the player characters and cohorts?
There is about a third of the forces that are free to be drilling, a third on call, but home, and a third either patrolling the streets or the wall. But the 25 infiltrator types are not tasked with anything but support tasks.
"I don't know what Wu is up to, why people take issue with him, or what they are suspicious of. There is a unit of more subtle and stealthy types. I'd like them to be tasked with subtly observing Wu's dealings, watching who comes in and out of his establishment from say other shops around his, getting food, and listening in on conversations, keeping track of his coming's and goings, but not following him, or staring at him. Just bing in the area for a valid reason, and being aware of what he's up to.
In terms of the Koda, I want a listing of all members and associates. They get in a fight, find out who they are, where they live, what they do for work, and who they associate with most, just names and occupations for them. Again, it is about keeping records, and occasionally sending a man on an errand in the area, perhaps visit a friend, or perform some civic work, like fixing a wall of a house of something of that sort. We want to see what the gang-members are doing without it appearing like they are the reason there's a member of the guard there.
"Don't do anything rash, don't approach them while gathering information, unless it is t prevent a crime, in which case stop as normal. But that's for the observers. Patrols should simply patrol, look out for crime and suspicious activity, and respond to calls for help and such."

Wow - okay - you did some good rolls - however, your "crunch" was incorrect.
First - there are three "sets of texts" - therefore no one in the party can aid you with this - except for someone carrying a set of Text - otherwise everyone in the party with "Linguistics" - would have rolled to aid.
So far Aliento has a copy - as does Ariarh and you. No one else can aid you without a copy of the text - and you only have three copies.
Second - you personally have 33 hours of work ahead of you. Once you are done with your text - you can attempt to "aid" Ariarh or Aliento - but only after your 33 hours are done. Unless you would like to translate another person's notes for them. You can only make 8 linguistic checks a day to "assist" in your speed - and you can study for 8 hours a day.
1 - Day one you studied 8 hours - and you picked up an additional 8 for a total of 16 hours.
2 - Day two you studied again for 8 hours - but you only made 8 Linguistics rolls - so I am "rolling in" your extra 3 rolls from the next post. This gives you a total of 17 hours done on day two - or a total of 33. You have, effectively - finished your part of the text by day 2.
This is fortunate - because you are on the trail for two days until you return home to "rest" - however - when you DO get home - it is likely you will not have time to study for eight hours straight - more on that soon, though...

Indeed - your "assist" then is equal to four hours a day - for two days - plus your first 8 rolls. This will grant you a total of 15 hours out of 33.
During your down time - as Arasmes is willing to "assist" - he can be given the book in the other four hours of the day - for a total of HIS rolls - which will be computed next, and added to yours.
