Pavanna Alazario |

So much for not aggravating the Sczarni until they forced our hand. Okay, Jubrayl, you wanna play rough? Fine.
Startled by the sudden flash of blades, Pavanna snarls at her attacker, throwing off her cloak*. She has too many people to help and too little time to help all of them, and Saroune’s yelp of pain makes the choice for her.
DM, I take it ‘party up’ means we’re out of the surprise round and into regular combat turns? If so:
On her initiative:
— Move action: Pavanna draws her longsword (* for flavour purposes, it’s part of the same motion that throws off her cloak)
— Swift action: activate Archaeologist’s Luck (+1 to hit rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks; free action to maintain)
— Standard action: let’s try to reduce the odds quickly: Pavanna casts flare at Saroune’s attacker, trying to debilitate him before he can finish her off
Her red eyes in fury, Pavanna gathers her will, focuses it on the face of the man who just stabbed Saroune, and releases a sunburst-flash of magical light by barking out a word in Infernal: “«Flare!»”.)
(Casting in threat-range provokes an AoO, so: Concentration check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
... wow, I’d better hope the guy coming after Pavanna wiffs again, or can’t get a serious hit through her DR....)

DM-Salsa |

@ Pavanna: Yes
@ Saroune: Heck no, that'd take way too long. I can straighten things out and I'll find a target if your's is downed. (Or let you keep the roll if there isn't one and we're still in combat.)
AoO from Thug 5: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
The shock of seeing one of the so-called devil-woman in front of him causes the thug to botch his sword thrust yet again as he tries to take advantage of the momentary distraction of spell casting.
Thug 5 Fort: 1d20 ⇒ 11
A flash of light goes off with a pop in front of the face of the the thug that had bloodied Saroune. He curses in a lilting language as spots swim before his eyes.
AC 14
Thug 1: 8
Thug 2: 8
Thug 3: 8
Thug 4: 8
Thug 5: 8 dazzled

Olivius Telraven |

A screech of steel down his spear-arm and Oliius was suddenly acting on instinct. Poor guy was all that made it into his head before reflexes kicked in. With Asmodaen dicipline he stood, pivoted, and jabbed in one fluid maneuver.
Move action: draw spear
Std action: attack
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

![]() |

Victoria saw it happening around her. The thug had just missed her with its less than impressive swordsmanship. Drawing her sword, she gave the thug a challenging look as she returned the favor, with less than satisfying results.
----------
Move Action: Draw longsword
Standard Action: Take a swing at Thug 2.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Thirzin Bronzebeard |

Thirzin grins, having already gripped the armor on his arm and the weaponry under his cloak. He chuckles as he swings the axe at one of the thugs Thug 2.
Slice Thug 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Dmg: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
"Now it's a party!" The dwarf's drunken over exuberance allows his enemy to meet death as he is almost cut in twain.

Horatio Aldebrandt |

Hearing the hiss of a blade through the air, Horatio manages to twist himself out of the way just in time, standing in one quick motion, rapier already in his hand. His eyes lock on those of the thug who tried to attack him, and he waves his free hand in a quick, hypnotic motion, muttering a few rhyming lines under his breath. He watches the eyes of his attacker glaze, hoping they remain that way, and orders, "Subdue him!", pointing at the man who attacked Saroune.
Draw rapier as move action, Charm Person on Thug 3 as a standard action, trying to order him to grapple Thug 4. Save DC is 17, DM. 18 if he could be attracted to me (Charming trait). :P

Pavanna Alazario |

Erm, DM? You said it was Thug #4 that stabbed Saroune, and that was the one Pavanna magick’d. The map has #5 as dazzled.

DM-Salsa |

Thug 1: 8
Thug 2: 1
Thug 3: 8
Thug 4: 8 dazzled
Thug 5: 8

Akisame Koetsuji |

Okay, I was next to Victoria when this fight starts. I am taking my action as follows.
Seeing stuff breaking out I move to action. I five foot to thug #3. I then do Flurry of Maneuvers.
I start with Ki throw:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 To trip him, he is prone in square 10-F.
I then attempt to grapple him as my second maneuver:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 -I fail.
He will provoke if he attempts to stand. I will place myself and him.
If the color difference of squares means I cannot five foot, then I move and do the Ki throw instead of both the throw and grapple.

Pavanna Alazario |

... and Akisame’s intervention has rendered Horatio’s charm attempt moot. Oh, well — he seems to have things well in hand, at any rate. :D

Horatio Aldebrandt |

This happens every time one of my characters attempts to use Charm Person. *sigh* I was almost useful for a minute, too!

Pavanna Alazario |

You’ll have your chance in a moment, I’d say. Saroune’s hurting pretty badly right now, and I’m certain Horatio’s not about to pass up the chance to ‘lay hands’ on a lovely woman.... ;)

DM-Salsa |

If I'm seeing right, both Victoria and Thirzin attacked Thug 2. If the 8 listed was right, then this guy would be at -5
She missed. On the other hand, a drunk dwarf almost killing you is just about as effective.
Thug 1: 8
Thug 2: 1
Thug 3: 8
Thug 4: 8 dazzled
Thug 5: 8

Saroune Anzoletta |

As a wounded wizard, I'm in a terrible position. :C
Saroune heard the soft whisper of a blade being pulled from its scabbard just in time to face her attacker, a brutish Scarnzi man holding a rapier. He slashed once and pain blossomed in Saroune's neck and chest. She screamed in pain. Before the man could finish her though, a blast of light erupted in his face, sending him reeling.
Saroune used this opportunity to scramble away, trying desperately to escape the dangerous pair of men that stood around her.
It figures that my first combat action as a hero would be to run away. I take a Withdraw action to get some ground between me and the two thugs.

DM-Salsa |

Thirzin, Victoria, and Akisame, you all get an AoO on Thug 3. Thirzin and Akisame get a +1 to this roll.
Seriously, doing this individually was a mistake.
Pavanna-19
Saroune-18
Thugs-18
Victoria-17
Gluck-15
Horatio-12
Olivius-11
Thirzin-8
Noro-7
Akisame-6
AC 15
HP 16
AC 14
Thug 1: 8
Thug 2: Gone with the wind
Thug 3: 8 (Probably toast)
Thug 4: 8 dazzled
Thug 5: 8
Acrobatics (Thug 4, Thug 5) +6: 2d20 ⇒ (12, 16) = 28
Thug 4 Rapier v. Pavanna: 1d20 + 2 - 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 1 + 2 + 1 = 5
Thug 5 Rapier v. Pavanna: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 = 11
Thug 3 Acrobatics to stand: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Thug 1 Rapier v. Olivius: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Gluck PA v. Noro: 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 9 - 2 + 4 = 15
Damage: 1d3 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
In a flurry of motion, everyone reacts to the attacks. Thirzin nearly rends his foe in twain, sending him running for the hills. The thug that had been dazzled by Pavanna and the one that had attacked her with underwhelming results move, almost in unison, to flank her. Despite the flashy display, both of them manage to miss. The thug that Akisame had tripped rolls on his back and tries to spring to his feet before anyone can react. Unfortunately for him, three of the four people that can strike at him are just a hair faster than he is. Olivius' opponent repeats his attack, with similar results.
Gluck on the other hand proves to be terribly efficient as another blow slams into Noro's stomach. Noro has taken 48 points of non lethal and is now staggerd and nauseated.
"Hurry up, knock her out and lets go!" Jubrayl yells at Gluck as he takes the longer, but safer way to the door.
People run out of the building, having no interest in getting involved in something that's sure to attract the sheriff's attention.
The bottom of the pit is ten feet below the the first tier. It's a DC 10 Climb if you want to get out of there.

Olivius Telraven |

Olivius hears the arena announcer yell at the monster in the ring just as he bats away a pathetic attempt to stab him, then he hears boards creaking as the announcer runs around the topmost ring of bleachers. Olivius knows a boss when he sees one. He bursts past his goon and darts up the bleachers like steps with suprising agility. He impacts Jubryal at the top like the business end of a battering ram.
Imp. Bull Rush: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
ending in B-2. Thug gets an AoO. By my count, its a 25 ft drop to the ground. Maybe with some extra damage for being forcefully ejected from the top of the stands? ;)

Pavanna Alazario |

And I’m up first. Well, time to cut down the odds a little!
— Free action: maintain Archaeologist’s Luck
— Swift action: activate Arcane Strike (+1 damage)
— Standard action: longsword attack on Thug #4
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Woohoo, a hit!
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Free action: talk some trash to her opponent. :D
Pavanna keeps her focus on the goon she struck at with her magic, trusting Horatio to protect her back. A simple parry sends his rapier past her shoulder, and her backswing deftly slashes deep into his side. “I’m sorry: what was that about my mother?” she smirks up at him.

![]() |

Going ahead and taking my AoO now. :D
AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
While her first attack was less than impressive, her opponent left himself open. He just asked for the backswing. Taking the opportunity, Victoria cut into the thug. And deep.

DM-Salsa |

@ Olivius: I counted it as 17 and a half, so let's say twenty.
While Pavanna's opponent gasps for air, Victoria's lies in an expanding pool of his own blood.
Thug 1 AoO v. Olivius: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
The thug misses as Olivius surprises Jubrayl and both go careening off the top of the crates to the floor below.
Damage Olivius: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Damage Jubrayl: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3
Both of the men are jarred some, but Jubrayl takes it a little better than the caravan guard. Just as they recover their senses, they hear a fierce bellow from the door at the other end of the warehouse.
"What in the nine hells is going on in here!"
I hope you all are having fun, because I sure am.

Noro_Kas |

Not to be picky but gluck took one to many attacks
Noro dropped and you posted his attack ststing that if the party stops him then the attack does not happen.
Well they did not stop him so that attack occured then he just now attacked again.
I believe noro could have acted first giving her a chance to roll away and get up
But if its a better story this way we can go with it its obvious anyway noro let him win

![]() |

Alright, time to decide Victoria's actions when it comes to her.
Now that one of the assailants had been dropped by her, Victoria decided to strike out at the next one she saw. Unless they surrendered, she would end their attempts on innocent lives. She gripped her sword in both hands and ran down the next thug.
Full round action: Charge Thug 5
Charge Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 +2 to attack for charging, -1 for using a buckler and wielding a weapon in two hands.
Charge Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
It was a solid hit and it looked like it hurt, but the foul man could probably still fight through it. Unfortunately.

DM-Salsa |

@ Noro: Whoops, that's my mistake, but how are you getting up or out of the way? (That's his action for his next turn. I'll roll for an AoO if I need to, since using that when I know it'll hit is kind of a jerk move.)

Saroune Anzoletta |

Saroune, somewhat removed from the melee, took stock of her injury. She was hurt bad. A deep slash ran from her side to the base of her neck and it was bleeding heavily. She would likely need some medical attention, but now wasn't the time to worry about what would come after. She needed to make sure she didn't get gutted in the next few seconds
Pulling a piece of cured leather from her belt, Saroune tapped into her fear and anger at being attacked and began to coalesce it into an invisible barrier around her. She began to chant in Varisian, using her words to anchor the spell in place.
When she finished, she turned to look at the shouter.
I cast Mage Armor. My AC is currently 17

Thirzin Bronzebeard |

AoO: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 1 = 11
Dmg: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Thirzin chuckles as the thug moves, his hefty axe coming in a side arc, the blade already hungering for more blood.

Pavanna Alazario |

A thought occurs to me. Free actions can be taken at any time, right? And Perception and Knowledge checks are free actions?
If so, well, Pavanna’s looking up towards the ‘ramp’ entrance, where the shout came from, and I figure she might be able to see past the thug she’s fighting well enough to check out who just came in. She may even recognise them, whether by sight herself or from things people have said about town. (Seriously, the fight’s been going less than fifteen seconds — if it’s the guards, they must’ve been right outside, or something....)
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
I don’t know what other modifiers might apply in these circumstances, DM, so I’ll have to leave assessing success or failure with you. The additional +1 bonus is from Archaeologist’s Luck.
Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
That’s an untrained skill, but hey, bard. ;) For reference, the bonus includes Pavanna’s +2 Int mod, +1 Bardic Knowledge, and +1 Archaeologist’s Luck.

Olivius Telraven |

Bull rush States that:
If your attack is successful, your target is pushed back 5 feet. For every 5 by which your attack exceeds your opponent's CMD you can push the target back an additional 5 feet. You can move with the target if you wish but you must have the available movement to do so. If your attack fails, your movement ends in front of the target.
By my reading then, and this is kinda central to my character concept, you don't have to move with someone you have just bull rushed. You may do so, up to your movement speed, but it is not a requirement. In fact, you can bull rush someone beyond the distance of your movement speed, into other creatures (making the requisite checks) and still sit right where you were to begin with, not having moved an inch forward.
I think Olivius was out of movement at the top of the bleachers as he has a move of 20 in armor, but even if he has movement left, he doesn't have to follow Jubryal over. He just hits him, then watches as the guy falls into some crates.
This doesn't have to happen. I'll abide by your version of events if you wish, but in the future I'm probably going to be the front line anchor, and I don't really want to be bull rushing off and leaving the squishies alone. I plan to attack at reach (starting at 3rd) and then Shield Slam/Bull Rush anything that gets closer so that they have to provoke an AoO every turn to get inside striking range (if they're not large/have reach).
Anyway, let me know what you decide/what your opinions are.

Horatio Aldebrandt |

Well, damn. I get back on after a day at work, to find that I'm utterly confused. Has combat effectively ended, or what? o_O

Pavanna Alazario |

AFAICT, the fight’s still going, but it looks like the cops just arrived, and they might take a dim view of anyone getting killed — particularly town residents — regardless of who drew steel first.
Of course, I’d still like to know why the Sczarni went for the lethal option like this in the first place! Half of us are fresh into town today, and that’s a pretty damned short time to prompt premeditated murder-attempts. o.O Unless they’re taking a ‘scorched earth’ policy against anyone who might have been planning to save Noro’s life....

Noro_Kas |

sorry about the quietness.. had my TT game last night.
anyway one area I cannot find guidance or reference for is movement while prone.
my plan was to use a move action to roll back away (like a 5' step) then use my standard action to stand up (so to avoid the AoO) then since Noro is still in her bonus rage round she is not fatigued she can re-enter her barbarian rage.
so question being now what checks (if any) would be needed?

Horatio Aldebrandt |

(Okay. That helps me get some grasp on the situation. Seriously, it's 9:30 pm, I've been up since 7 am, and I've been flat out like a lizard drinking. I'd ignore this for tonight if it wasn't so much fun. If I've gone over this correctly, thugs #2 and 3 are down and out, right?)
Horatio tries to take stock of the situation, finding everything moving too quickly for him to follow. In the commotion, he hears a woman scream in pain - that gets his attention pretty quickly. He sees the Varisian woman scrambling away from the melee, bleeding profusely, and leaps up to her tier of crates and boards. He sees her cast some sort of protective spell on herself, but the bleeding doesn't stop. He attempts to steady her, placing his hands reassuringly on her neck and shoulder, either side of the wound, and whispering a few words under his breath. Blue light seeps from his fingertips, stitching the wound closed.
That done, he stands and faces the ramp, both hands raised, showing them to be empty. "How about you order this brawl to stop, and we can talk it out like civilized people?" he calls back, attempting to recognize the speaker.
If I was right, and thug #3 is out, I provoke one AoO by moving (from thug #5), but screw it, Horatio's gonna try to help a damsel in distress anyway. Move action to get next to Saroune, standard action to cast Cure Light Wounds, then basically showing whoever the new arrival is that he's willing to talk, hoping everybody else is as well. Will roll diplomacy.
Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25 (or 26 if the Charming trait bonus applies)
I must have appeased the dice gods somehow!

Pavanna Alazario |

If I read DM-Salsa’s round-start post correctly, Victoria’s charge/successful attack on her initiative means Thug #5 will have bigger problems than dealing out an AoO by the time Horatio makes his move. ;)
And I say we make the most of the good luck while it lasts. When this started, with all those goons stepping out of the crowd with surprise, I was worried I’d need to create a new PC before the AP actually started.... :S

Horatio Aldebrandt |

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I may or may not have sobbed a little. Hopefully this works, since it's all I'm good for. If this ends with me in melee, I'll have just enough time to cry before I get stabbed to death in the face.
Edit: good god, I sound b!%y when I'm overly tired. I didn't mean to. >.>

DM-Salsa |

Olivius: Crap. Well that's two mistakes. Never mind the damage.
@ Noro: Make an acrobatics roll with a DC of 21 (His CMD+2 because you're prone.) If you make that you can stand without taking an AoO.
New Initiative order since I was a dummy and decided that having individual intiatives was a good idea.
------
1-Ya'll
2-Thugs
3-Gluck
4-Guards
-------
I've successfully confused myself enough that I don't know where we are in the initiative count right now, so to make this easy, it's starting from the top. If you've already taken an action, just link to it, or re-roll if it was bad.
--------
Again, I'm sorry about the screw-ups. I'll try not to do that again.

Olivius Telraven |

Olivius hears the arena announcer yell at the monster in the ring just as he bats away a pathetic attempt to stab him, then he hears boards creaking as the announcer runs around the topmost ring of bleachers. ending in B-2. Thug gets an AoO. Maybe some extra damage for being forcefully ejected from the top of the stands? ;)
Replicated for ease, but please keep first roll which totaled a Bullrush of 15

Noro_Kas |

acrobatics DC 21: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 2 = 17
curse you sickened condition.
Noro attempts to roll out from Gluck's assault. cursing herself for believing Jubryal in the first place.
but in her condition the move did nothing more than open herself up for another attack.
take the Aoo and then Noro will be standing (barely)
Noro reenters rage
non-lethal taken 26 of 54
condition: sickened
-2 all attacks, saves, skill checks, and damage

Horatio Aldebrandt |

Can I keep my last post? This one? I liked those rolls, and it's probably the most useful thing I can do right now.

Pavanna Alazario |

Like Horatio, I did well enough last time that I’m keeping the old version of my turn, posted as http://paizo.com/campaigns/DMSalsaPresentsRiseOfTheRunelords/gameplay&p age=6#273. With a slight amplification for RP purposes:
Pavanna doesn’t lower her guard as a goodly number of Sandpoint’s guardsmen burst in through the main door, above and behind her opponent. Not only does she still have a would-be murderer before her, childhood dealings with Westcrown’s dottari have not left her with an unalloyed trust in the authorities’ competence, integrity and impartiality. Nor have Magnimar’s patchwork of private guard-groups done much to cure that mistrust in the last few years.

DM-Salsa |

Yes, I thought I said that at least twice, once in my last post and again in the discussion thread. Thank you for linking it by the way.

![]() |

Now that one of the assailants had been dropped by her, Victoria decided to strike out at the next one she saw. Unless they surrendered, she would end their attempts on innocent lives. She gripped her sword in both hands and ran down the next thug.
Charge Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Charge Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Also, for whatever it's worth, I'm continuing to attack the thugs because they're threatening innocent lives. IE the rest of the party. It's the heat of combat, I'm fighting evil. I feel justified in continuing to attack and ignore whoever just barged in. Only clarifying because I'm a paladin and I don't want it to be misconstrued as an evil action.

DM-Salsa |

Let's jut say that the members of the party were the only non-evil guys there, well, until the guard showed up.
